ST. PAUL, Minn. and CHARLOTTE, N.C. October 15, 2025 /3BL/ – 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) named Kevin Tang, an 8th grader at Cedarlane Academy of the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in Hacienda Heights, California, as the winner of the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier middle school science competition. Kevin distinguished himself with a novel fall detection device that can accelerate emergency responses to falls among older adults at home, even in the dark. As the grand prize winner, he received a $25,000 cash prize and the prestigious title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

Kevin spent the last four months competing against nine other finalists and ultimately secured himself the win during final Challenge events at 3M global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Oct. 13 and 14. The finalists had to navigate a series of scientific tasks and were evaluated on their communication and presentation skills, ingenuity, innovative thinking, application of STEM principles, demonstration of passion and research, and the ability to inspire others. 

Kevin’s custom in-home device uses video analysis and smart alerts to protect older adults in their homes. It can recognize falls with high accuracy, even at night. Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that falls are the leading cause of injury among 1 in 4 older adults annually, or over 14 million people. Kevin created an algorithm that analyzes video input to identify falls and triggers alerts to loved ones via a corresponding smart phone application. His new solution advances current offerings on the market through the ability to capture imagery at night and provide around-the-clock monitoring. The device can also detect irregular movements while the individual is walking, which could be a symptom of a stroke.

For most materials, the end of life is the end of the road. Final destination? Landfill.

But with circularity — the practice of keeping resources in use for as long as possible — that paradigm shifts. This vision that all materials are valuable resources can unlock new opportunities for decarbonization, economic sustainability and business innovation.

Recycling is a key lever in a circular system, bringing resources back into use by transforming yesterday’s “trash” into tomorrow’s value stream. At our Galway, Ireland manufacturing facility, we’re proving that the goal to send zero waste to landfill is possible at an industrial scale.

How circularity is delivering greener outcomes for the Emerald Isle

Our plant in Galway, Ireland has the capacity to manufacture over 100 Thermo King cold chain refrigeration units every day. A decade ago, the site sent upwards of 20 tons of waste to landfill each year. But in 2014, a cross-functional team set an ambitious target: to become Trane Technologies’ first zero-waste-to-landfill facility.

The plant is located between two residential neighborhoods near the beautiful Galway Bay, and the team needed to take a local approach to prioritize the community and minimize land degradation and air pollution.

They began by exploring every waste stream to identify how to capture its inherent value. Plastics, metals, cardboard, timber and other components are separated and collected by employees in every production area. Collaboration was also critical — the team engaged with regional partners to create innovative recycling alternatives for the generated waste.

Transparency is built into each stage of the reverse logistics ecosystem: every ounce of material that leaves the facility is collected, weighed and traced to its final destination. Leadership reviews monthly sustainability reporting, which includes waste management, and conducts regular audits to ensure long-term improvements.

This strategic system ensures that no material goes to waste. Scrap metals are reclaimed by a local recycler and processed into new raw materials, while non-reusable timber becomes garden mulch. Cardboard and paper are recycled for new packaging, and the minimal remaining materials are used to generate energy at a cement manufacturer — avoiding landfill entirely.

Why collaboration across the supply chain matters

More progress came when the team looked beyond the factory walls. Working with suppliers in multiple countries, the team reconceptualized standard packaging and shipping materials. The collaborations helped shift from single-use timber pallets and cardboard boxes to reusable crates and corrugated boxes that move between the factory and suppliers, a sustainable innovation in an effective reverse-logistics supply chain.

The results speak for themselves: from 2002 to 2012, Galway averaged 230 tons of landfill waste a year. By 2012, that figure had fallen to 20 tons, then to 2 tons in 2014. Since 2015, the facility has sent nothing to landfill for ten consecutive years.

This approach has created value for both our customers and our own business. The shift to returnable metal pallets saves on disposal costs by eliminating landfill fees and taxes, while reducing packaging resulted in raw material discounts.

And the environmental sustainability impacts are just as deep. Decarbonization initiatives like this support our broader business and sustainability strategies, propelling us toward carbon neutrality while supporting our customers in their own decarbonization goals.

How going beyond waste powers a decarbonized economy

Galway proves that zero-waste manufacturing is possible when systems, data and culture align, and the team’s success underscores that sustainable practices generate real value. The Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) is a national 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that provides professional case management services and financial assistance free of charge to Americans with chronic, life threatening, and debilitating illnesses.

The $1 million donation from the BMS Foundation will enable PAF to expand its nationally recognized case management program. For nearly 30 years, PAF case managers have provided direct support to patients living with chronic and critical illnesses and their families. PAF assists in helping to manage healthcare access challenges, as well as insurance and affordability, with an intentional commitment to vulnerable and medically underserved communities.

PAF case managers help patients and their families maintain access to prescribed healthcare services and medications, navigate insurance barriers, find resources to support cost-of-living expenses during treatment, evaluate and sustain health insurance coverage, apply for disability and manage or reduce out-of-pocket medical and living expenses. SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, Oct. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Scania takes a momentous step in its 134-year journey by inaugurating its third global industrial hub, in China. It’s an investment that not only strengthens Scania’s global footprint but positions the company at the heart of the world’s largest truck market.

The new industrial hub in Rugao, Jiangsu Province, represents one of Scania’s largest global investments to date. Covering 800,000 square metres, the site has a licensed production capacity of 50,000 vehicles a year and will serve both the Chinese market and selected export markets in Asia and beyond. The facility creates around 3,000 new jobs locally and represents a total investment of 2 billion euros.

Scania is the first western OEM to be granted a full production licence for a wholly owned truck plant in China, a milestone that underscores the company’s long-term commitment to the market.

The Rugao facility will operate almost entirely on renewable energy sources, including locally produced biogas and certified green electricity. These measures contribute directly to Scania’s Scope 1 and 2 decarbonisation targets.

With the new industrial hub, including R&D centres in Rugao and Shanghai, Scania strengthens its local footprint and its ability to jointly develop solutions with Chinese partners. The strategic investment brings Scania closer to customers in China and across Asia, enabling faster deliveries, wider specification options and deeper collaboration.

Scania introduces dual commercial offering for the Chinese market

The new industrial hub is designed to be part of the TRATON Modular System (TMS), which enables Scania and TRATON Group brands to efficiently scale, tailor, and innovate across markets, customer demands and product portfolios. TMS allows for integration of unique Chinese technologies and applications that will strengthen local and global competitiveness.

Two commercial offerings are planned: firstly, Scania, built to its global high standard and customisable for demanding applications – both tractors and rigids, with a wide range of service portfolios. Secondly, in addition to the global Scania offer, a new tractor product range – NEXT ERA – developed specifically for China’s competitive long-haul and volume segment.

The NEXT ERA product line represents a new chapter in Scania’s commercial offering, developed specifically for the Chinese market and fully integrated with the local digital ecosystem. While sharing its DNA with the TRATON Modular System, it is designed for high-volume transport applications, with a standardised product and service portfolio. The TMS also allows unique technologies to be introduced in China first and then rolled out globally.

Deliveries from production in Rugao will begin in late 2025 and NEXT ERA will be launched in the first half of 2026.

LONDON, Oct. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) today launches Energy Productivity: Increasing efficiency in an expanded, electrified energy system, which highlights a major opportunity for the world to more than double global GDP by 2050, while reducing final energy demand by 24%.

As global prosperity grows, so will demand for energy services, such as mobility, heating, cooling and industrial production. But the ETC’s report shows that energy productivity improvements can deliver greatly expanded energy services with less energy input and dramatically reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Energy productivity is the measure of economic output (GDP) generated per unit of energy.
  • Electrification of road transport, building heating and cooking, together with more efficient appliances and smarter material use, makes possible greatly improved energy productivity.
  • This makes it possible to deliver more energy services while cutting costs and reducing the need for land, water, and other natural resources.
  • Governments, businesses and consumers must seize the chance to massively improve energy productivity by replacing inefficient fossil systems with far more efficient electric ones. Squandering this opportunity would increase the energy requirements and costs required to live comfortably, travel, and produce goods.

Growing prosperity with less energy input

Energy-based services are central to rising prosperity. By 2050, kilometres travelled by car could rise 70%; air travel by 150%; cooled floor area could grow by 150%; heated floor area by 25%; and demand for aluminium, petrochemicals, cement, and steel will all expand. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could improve efficiency in some areas, but the rapid growth of AI and data centres could add massive and highly uncertain new energy demand over the next 25 years.

But there are huge opportunities to increase energy productivity over the next 25 years, meeting this demand for increased energy services while using 24% less final energy (the energy used by appliances/vehicles) and 36% less primary energy (the raw energy resource, such as coal, oil, and gas, or wind or sunlight) than today.

These solutions unlock energy productivity, i.e. greater economic value from each unit of energy. If governments act now to introduce supportive policy, global prosperity can double by mid-century while using less energy overall.” said Adair Turner, Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission.

Key opportunities for energy productivity improvement:

  • Electrification over fossil fuels:

    • Electric vehicles (EVs) are up to three times more efficient than petrol cars, which convert only 25% of the energy input into energy in the wheels, with the rest wasted as heat. And EV sales are on track to exceed 20 million in 2025 – one in every four new cars worldwide.
    • Heat pumps deliver 3-4 times more heat per unit of energy than gas boilers, because they extract heat from the air. In 2024, global sales reached six million units, out-selling gas boilers in some key markets (e.g., by as much as 30% in the United States).
    • Electric cooking is 4-5 times more efficient than traditional use of biomass and offers major health benefits.
  • Efficient appliances: Replacing old technology with more efficient appliances that deliver the same benefits while using less energy (e.g., air conditioners, vehicles, lightbulbs, industrial motors) could cut global energy demand by around 10% by 2050. This would avoid the need for nearly 30,000 TWh of extra electricity generation (about the total global electricity consumed in 2024).
  • Smarter material use and recycling: Material efficiency and recycling could cut energy needs by 44% in chemicals and plastics, 33% in cement, and 27% in steel, even as total demand for outputs grows. Potential gains are significant, for example, producing aluminium from recycled scrap uses about 90% less energy than new metal.

A one-time opportunity to double the pace of energy efficiency improvement

At COP28 in 2023, countries committed to double the pace of energy productivity improvement from 2% per annum to 4% by 2030. The ETC details how countries can feasibly deliver that pledge, maintaining the higher rate for around 2 decades.

Beyond 2050, as electrification of the economy approaches the highest achievable levels, the pace of improvement may fall back to around 2%, and final energy demand will grow to support further growth of energy services and GDP. In addition, electricity demand may grow faster than our projections because of rapidly growing demand for AI and “rebound effects” (the tendency for energy demand to grow when prices fall).

This makes it essential to seize all available opportunities to improve energy productivity and avoid locking into fossil fuel systems and long-term costs.

Government, business and consumer action to seize the opportunity

Governments must play an essential role in setting the policy frameworks, standards, and incentives that enable businesses and consumers to achieve productivity gains. This is a global priority, but actions will vary for governments, businesses and consumers by region:

  • In all countries, electrifying road transport offers the biggest opportunity to cut fuel imports; vehicle energy efficiency standards are vital, together with scrappage schemes and trade-in programmes to increase the pace of stock turnover.
  • In high-latitude regions (e.g., Europe, Canada, Northern China), priorities must include replacing gas boilers with electric heat pumps;
  • In developing and tropical nations, fast-rising cooling demand requires efficient air conditioning and buildings designed to keep heat out, and replacing traditional biomass with cleaner cooking fuels or electricity can deliver major health and efficiency gains.

The briefing launches ahead of COP30 in Brazil, where new country pledges will be assessed against the COP28 pledge to double the annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. This briefing shows how this target could be achieved for the next 20 years.
