Weiler Joins the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in Receiving the Emergency Nurses Association’s Lantern Award for Quality, Safety and Education

BRONX, N.Y., July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the Jack D. Weiler Hospital at Montefiore Einstein announced that it has earned the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. The prestigious award for excellence in nursing advocacy, practice and research, marks the second time Montefiore has been honored by the ENA for its care and commitment to a high-quality work environment.

The Weiler ED earned accolades for its triage process, professional development, and implementation of new technology.

The Weiler ED treats nearly 70,000 patients each year and earned accolades from the ENA for its redesigned triage process, interdisciplinary huddles, professional development and successful implementation of new technology.

“Our ED, located in the heart of the Bronx, is a place where our team is constantly navigating decisions that carry the weight of saving lives,” said Janine Llamzon, DNP, MS, AGNP-C, RN, CEN, NEA-BC, assistant vice president, Emergency Service Line, Montefiore Einstein, and assistant professor, Emergency Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “With teamwork, trust and shared purpose, we bring hope and healing – this is why we earned the Lantern Award. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Initiatives like pairing seasoned professionals with novice and new-to-ED nurses are also fostering confidence and clinical skills to prepare the next generation of emergency nurses. This mentorship has been “invaluable” to Emely Gonzalez, MSN, RN, an eight-year veteran of the department.

“Working as an ED nurse was a dream of mine since middle school, and with the encouragement of our unit-based educators, nurse managers, directors, nurse practitioners and medical staff, I completed my Master of Science in Nursing in Education,” said Gonzalez. “My coworkers have become my family and our structured debriefing sessions enable us to reflect, learn and support each other. Each day I look forward to the privilege of providing care during some of the most critical moments in our patients’ lives.”

The culture of continuous learning has also driven clinical enhancements like moving patients who could be upright, rather than in beds and stretchers, to be cared for in areas of the ED designed for the level of care required. This shift has led to more effective communication, expedited care, and patient privacy.

Supporting these initiatives is an electronic tracking board embedded in the electronic health record so nurses can effectively monitor completion times for tests like x-rays and CT scans. A mobile medication scanning device now also aids accurate, “real-time” medication dosing.

“Having new technology at our fingertips enables us to best advocate on our patients’ behalf,” said Kayla McFarlane, MSN, RN, CEN, clinical director, Emergency Department – Weiler Division. “I’m inspired by the transformative advances we’ve already seen and look forward to continuing to reimagine what’s possible.”

S.T.A.R.T. program empowers school bus drivers and transportation staff to identify, prevent, and respond immediately to active threats before they escalate.

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio, July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — More than 25 million students ride the bus to school each day — yet most drivers have never been trained to respond to an active threat. That’s about to change. S.T.A.R.T. (School Transportation Active-Threat Response Training) is launching a national Back-to-School effort to equip drivers and transportation teams with the training they need to recognize, prevent, and respond to active threats before police arrive.

While most safety funding has traditionally focused on buildings, S.T.A.R.T. emphasizes that buses are rolling classrooms and deserve the same attention when it comes to active threat prevention and response. S.T.A.R.T.’s hands-on, scenario-based training equips drivers and transportation staff with the skills to recognize abnormal behavior, identify potential threats, and respond decisively in the critical moments before law enforcement arrives.

More than 25 million students in grades K through 12 ride a school bus daily, on nearly half a million buses, making approximately 10 billion trips per year, according to the New York School Bus Contractors Association.

“School buses are often the first and last point of contact for students each day,” said Jim Levine, CEO of S.T.A.R.T. “The bus driver, in essence, is the first responder. Our training ensures drivers and transportation teams are prepared to protect students and themselves, providing parents and school administrators with peace of mind.”

S.T.A.R.T. helps school districts meet driver professional development requirements while reinforcing their duty to protect students from the moment they step on the bus until the moment they return home. Training can be scheduled year-round to accommodate bus driver availability, funding cycles and staff schedules. Law enforcement partners are also encouraged to participate, reinforcing a coordinated community response to protecting students from active threats.

About S.T.A.R.T.
Founded in 2015 by a former School Resource Officer who recognized a critical gap in student safety, S.T.A.R.T. Air traffic is now recovering from the COVID downturn. The challenge for many airports is how the traffic can be managed more sustainably and efficiently while considering emissions and the needs of local communities. Additional capacity from new runways and ground infrastructure is expensive and can be subject to lengthy and complicated planning. In some cases, it’s simply not possible.

Experience with the Intelligent Approach system—initially developed for London Heathrow and now operating at Toronto Pearson and Amsterdam Schiphol—is a great showcase, demonstrating that technology really can help. Just ask the airports, airlines and air traffic controllers that use it.

What is Intelligent Approach?

Intelligent Approach is a suite of controller tools, jointly developed by Leidos and navigation service provider NATS. The system safely optimises arrival spacing to maximise runway capacity, enabling increased operational resilience, reducing fuel burn and CO2 emissions, and delivering better on-time performance. It can be integrated into any air traffic management system, providing dynamic separation indicators for air traffic controllers to maximize available runway capacity.

Intelligent Approach simplifies the separation of aircraft for air traffic controllers, offering capacity gains usually equivalent to two or three additional landings per hour per runway. The Time Based Separation functionality automatically adjusts spacing based on real-time wind data downlinked directly from each aircraft. This has been shown to reduce the impact of headwinds on runway capacity by over 60%.

For air traffic controllers using the tools, the concept is simple. The controllers are presented with a dynamic indicator, which shows the minimum safe separation that should be used and is automatically adjusted for aircraft type and real-time wind conditions. The indicator also automatically shows the controllers if the lead aircraft will need more time to allow it to exit the runway and considers the compression that happens when the lead aircraft slows to its landing speed, providing accurate indicators all the way to the runway threshold.

What are the benefits of using Intelligent Approach?

In January 2023, Amsterdam Schiphol became the most recent airport to adopt the technology, immediately seeing a significant capacity and operational resilience benefit. After a year in use, LVNL (the Netherland’s air traffic service provider) has reported three to six additional landings per hour on each of its runways under headwind conditions. The additional tactical capacity has allowed increased use of the noise preferential runway at Schiphol, reducing noise impact on local communities.

Soon after implementation, LVNL CEO Michiel van Dorst commented, “By implementing RECAT-TBS, we contribute to improving the residential quality and living environment for people living in the local community by using the most noise sensitive runways less. We also achieve safer and better throughput in landing air traffic flows which results in airlines suffering less from delayed flights during high winds at Schiphol.”

At Heathrow, Intelligent Approach is enabling savings of some 45,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum and significantly improving the airport’s operational punctuality. A British Airways operations director described it as essential to maintaining efficient operations and providing the best service possible to the airline’s passengers.

Toronto Pearson is seeing similar benefits, with early data showing a reduction of 6% or more in spacing between both wake and non-wake pairs. It is anticipated that this will lead to a corresponding increase in runway capacity in both high wind and indeed, low wind conditions.

And that’s not the end of the story. With the typical payback period for the cost of Intelligent Approach being measured in a few months, not years, more airports are adopting this technology.

Award and 300,000-Volt technological breakthrough position Avalanche to unlock key commercial revenue from fusion devices

SEATTLE, July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Avalanche Energy, a fusion energy startup developing modular compact fusion machines, today announced it was awarded $10 million through the Washington State Department of Commerce Green Jobs Grant Program for the development of its FusionWERX test facility in Richland, Wash. The facility is a first-of-its-kind commercial-scale testing facility for advanced fusion technologies that will leverage a broad scope radioactive materials license, advanced tritium management capabilities, and the company’s breakthrough 300,000 Volt (300kV) fusion device.

“This announcement marks small-scale fusion’s evolution from a laboratory curiosity into a neutron source that creates real-world value,” said Robin Langtry, CEO of Avalanche Energy. “The Green Jobs Grant and our 300kV breakthrough are the groundwork for delivering high-flux neutrons at low cost to a wide range of customers who lack reliable, scalable neutron sources necessary for their operations. The milestone, which we targeted as part of our Series A, unlocks a key source of early revenue and strengthens our path to compact, energy-generating fusion devices.”

From Voltage Breakthrough to Neutron Factory
Avalanche’s breakthrough – operating its desk-sized magneto-electrostatic fusion machine at 300kV for hours with minimal power loss – makes it the most compact, highest-known-voltage fusion device ever built. Adjusted for size, the 300kV held by Avalanche’s device for multiple hours equals 6 MegaVolts per meter (MV/m), double the voltage density of lightning, which peaks at 3 MV/m for only a split second.

“For magneto-electrostatic fusion machines the ability to operate at very high voltage gradients with low current losses is a key unlock to push these fusion machines to higher fusion triple products and neutron rates,” said Langtry. “This 300 kV milestone at 6 MV/m is also an important foundational building block to our future path building Q>1 magneto-electrostatic Orbitron fusion machines.”

Combined with the advanced tritium capabilities of the FusionWERX facility, Avalanche’s ability to operate its fusion device at 300kV unlocks the key step for using tritium to produce continuous high-flux fusion neutrons at a rate and cost-per-neutron orders of magnitude better than previously achievable. Neutron products generated by this process will eventually be used to create medical and power radioisotopes and to test new materials such as radiation-tolerant alloys. In addition, Avalanche will also operate the FusionWERX facility as a commercial “wind-tunnel” – offering access to private companies, universities, national laboratories, and public-private consortia to test their fusion technologies at the facility under commercial intellectual property (IP) ownership arrangements.

Strategic Public-Sector Partnerships
The Washington State Department of Commerce Green Jobs Grant, which provides funds for projects that promote the growth of clean energy, will directly support approximately 12 skilled positions and will fund the purchase of first-generation neutron-handling equipment for the facility. The FusionWERX commercial test activities are expected to expand significantly in future years and will help spur follow-on growth of a fusion workforce and supply chain in the Richland area. This may include a special high-flux neutron test stand for advanced fusion materials research, dubbed a micro Fusion Prototypical Neutron Source (uFPNS), and Avalanche’s Q>1 deuterium-tritium fusion energy test program.

“By supporting Avalanche’s FusionWERX facility, Washington is translating cutting-edge fusion science into family-wage jobs and a resilient clean-energy supply chain,” said Joe Nguyen, Director of the Washington State Department of Commerce. “It’s exactly the kind of community-driven innovation our Green Jobs program exists to champion.”

FusionWERX is strategically located in the Tri-Cities region, home to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a leader in energy technology research; and Washington State University’s Tri-Cities campus, with its well-regarded nuclear engineering and materials program, which will enable Avalanche to leverage the area’s deep nuclear and scientific expertise to become a hub for fusion technology development and job creation. The facility is located in a facility owned by the Port of Benton, the former location of Kurion’s modular detritiation prototype facility, which was previously licensed for tritium operations.

“The Tri-Cities’ legacy in nuclear science makes Richland the perfect launchpad for FusionWERX,” said Karl Dye, President and CEO of TRIDEC. “Avalanche’s facility will attract new talent, new companies, and new investment to our area while reinforcing the region’s leadership in the clean-energy economy.”

In June 1981, news of a mysterious disease first began making headlines out of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. People who were impacted developed unusual infections and grew sick as their immune systems failed. Those early days of what we now know as the HIV epidemic were marked by great fear and loss. By the time the first medicine was introduced in the United States in 1987, more than 5,000 people had died and the number of people impacted continued to balloon.

In the decades since then, Gilead has been committed to relentless innovation to treat and prevent HIV – and its scientific advances have helped reshape the course of the epidemic: The company created the first single-tablet daily HIV treatment in 2006. Prior to this innovation, the first therapies to treat HIV required people to often take more than 20 pills a day and deal with potentially numerous side effects. Six years later, in 2012, Gilead again brought another tool to fight the epidemic when its first HIV prevention medicine was approved.

Still a host of social factors, including stigma and access, have continued to contribute to the human toll and economic impact that HIV has had around the world. In the U.S. alone, 100 people die from HIV-related illnesses and 700 people are newly diagnosed each week. Thus, Gilead remains steadfastly committed to helping end the epidemic.

Gilead is at the forefront of pioneering innovations in HIV, providing prevention and treatment options that help meet unmet needs. The company closed out 2024 earning the Breakthrough of the Year honor by Science magazine for one of its innovations in HIV.

For Gilead, this new chapter of innovation in HIV is driven by two primary themes: putting people first and long-acting prevention options. Putting people first means, in part, partnering with communities early in the clinical development process. Researchers worked with the community in the design of its groundbreaking PURPOSE HIV prevention program. For example, researchers worked with the community in the design of its groundbreaking PURPOSE HIV prevention program, which is considered to be the most comprehensive and diverse of any HIV prevention program conducted.

“To make substantial progress, we must be intentional about both the scientific and community-based factors that help shape the epidemic,” says Moupali Das, Vice President, Clinical Development, HIV Prevention & Pediatrics. “It’s critical to focus on groups who are disproportionately affected by HIV and who most need new options for prevention.”

Gilead also goes beyond investing in world-class science and putting people at the center of the drug development process. It also works with community organizations and global partners to reduce barriers to care and help enable access to its medicines.

“To help stop HIV, we need to help enable access to our medicines to everyone who could benefit, no matter who or where they are,” says Janet Dorling, Senior Vice President, Intercontinental Region, and Gilead Patient Solutions (GPS). Staying true to the company’s heritage of pioneering access programs, Gilead is committed to supplying its medicines where the need is greatest.

Ultimately, it will take a combination of bold, scientific innovation coupled with partnerships to help end the epidemic that has taken the lives of more than 42 million people since the 80s.

“We have a responsibility to help end one of the greatest public health challenges of our time,” says Daniel O’Day, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The opportunity to end the HIV epidemic has never been greater.”
