Announces first scope 3 goal, a milestone for a diverse, global company with thousands of products Refines scopes 1 and 2 near-term targets for 2030 in alignment with the 1.5° C trajectory of the Paris Agreement

3M announced today that its near-term, science-based emissions reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being in line with the 1.5° C trajectory of the Paris Agreement. This milestone reaffirms 3M’s ongoing commitment to climate action, decarbonization of its operations and portfolio of products and continual innovation on behalf of customers around the world. 

“3M has a long history of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. The validation of our targets by SBTi reflects years of collaboration and dedication by 3Mers working on a detailed action plan to innovate across our portfolio to decarbonize industry, accelerate our climate solutions and improve our environmental footprint,” said Gayle Schueller, senior vice president and chief sustainability officer at 3M. “We will continue to drive innovation in our products and our processes, empowering customers to reach their sustainability goals, and working together to contribute to a low-carbon economy.”  

The SBTi provides a framework for companies to set targets according to climate science. SBTi offers standards, guidance, and tools for establishing emissions reduction targets. The SBTi has validated the following near-term targets for 3M: 

Reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 52.6 percent by 2030, from a 2019 baseline. Reduce absolute scope 3 emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. 

 “Not only has 3M been an early adopter of setting targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions, but we have also helped evolve the science of measurement and accounting for supply chain emissions (Scope 3), which are particularly challenging for a diverse, global company like 3M.” Schueller continued, “For years, we have focused on demonstrating our math, path and plan and we will continue to leverage that on behalf of our customers.” 

The announcement of the 3M’s first scope 3 GHG emissions target – validated by SBTi – is a milestone in the company’s journey to account for a portfolio that spans across industries including automotive, protective safety, energy, consumer packaged goods, and electronics. 3M has been documenting and reporting scope 1 and 2 inventory since 2002 and has been developing its scope 3 emissions inventory since 2011 in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. For more than a decade, 3M has been collaborating with customers to provide the data and solutions to meet their sustainability goals.

Climate Week NYC is not one event, but a collision of more than 900 events at multiple venues across the New York metro area. Sustainability leaders in business, governments, civil society and the academic community all gathered to discuss the most pressing issues in the fight against climate change under the theme: “It’s Time!” We asked Nate Pepper, Vice President of Communications at Veolia North America, to summarize his first impressions and key takeaways. Here’s what he had to say:

Addressing the Elephant in the Room 

No sustainability gathering could take place in 2024 without addressing the context of global conflicts, the upcoming U.S. elections and ESG investing and DEI policy debates. These topics set the tone for many Climate Week events. Despite the headlines, the research is clear.

88% of Americans approve of companies that have a positive impact on their communities and 82% want companies to take a public stance on climate change.

When it comes to investing, sustainable investment funds grew 15% last year, and more than half of investors plan to boost sustainable investments in the coming year. A decade of research by McKinsey on more than 1,200 companies shows that more diverse organizations financially outperform their peers. Sustainability remains a critical priority, and the participants at Climate Week NYC were fully committed to advancing it.

AI Promises Progresses, But at a Cost

While generative AI presents many opportunities for progress, it is increasingly clear it will come at an environmental and human cost. Climate Week NYC events included sessions on the promise of AI to help advance technology and progress. Accenture launched their Generative AI for the Global Goals white paper at the UN Global Compact. At the same time, I heard as many questions about AI ethics, and an increasing concern about the energy demand of AI computing.

Forbes estimates that AI will double the demand for data center energy consumption by 2028 in an already energy-stressed world. Microsoft announced plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to support their data center growth, as well. To capture the benefits of generative AI, organizations will also need to plan energy and water strategies to address the resource demands created by its use.

Water and Climate Risk are Inextricably Linked

Water access, conservation and quality was a strong secondary theme that ran through every Climate Week event. Jason Morrison, the head of the CEO Water Mandate, spoke persuasively about how that water is no longer “just” a sustainability topic. Climate change and water scarcity is making it an acute community resilience and risk management priority. He urged companies to build collaborative partnerships at a community and basin level to protect water resources.

Reporting Requirements Continue to Converge, Just Not Yet

With Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) implementation deadlines on the horizon, representatives from all the major sustainability reporting frameworks spoke about the need for alignment, convergence and more consistent and comparable reporting between companies. However, there is still a lack of clear, actionable guidance for reporting companies. Regardless of which reporting framework becomes the industry standard, the trend will surely be towards greater transparency, more third party verification, and a more digital reporting approach.

From Slide Decks to Spreadsheets

The time has arrived for credible plans and actions on climate change. It was clear that sustainability and decarbonization are becoming more operationalized at major companies with a higher expectation of verification and documentation. With this shift the expectation for sustainability professionals is to become more operational, more action-oriented and more data-driven. The focus will also extend beyond operational fencelines to encompass supply chains and product end-of-life.

Don’t worry, CSOs, more audit and legal help is on the way! In a recent podcast, Ellen Weinreb talked about the rise of the ESG Controller role within corporations, which can help with compliance, data governance and regulation.

As part of the fastest path to impact, United Way of Calgary and Area is also looking to match a community organization with Wesco University. This free, self-paced training program supports equity seeking individuals in finding new career opportunities.

BELLEVUE, Wash. and CHARLES CITY, Va., October 3, 2024 /3BL/ – The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Rice Rivers Center is using the power of 5G to transform conservation for the federally endangered Atlantic sturgeon. Today, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced that VCU Rice Rivers Center is using T-Mobile 5G to protect this prehistoric species, while setting a new benchmark for environmental preservation along the James River.

Once fished to near extinction, the James River sturgeon population near Richmond, Virginia, still faces an ongoing threat from power plant cooling water intake systems. But thanks to advancements in tracking technology using telemetry receivers, particularly with tagged female sturgeon, the Center can notify the plant when these fish enter their spawning habitat to lay eggs. This allows the plant to decrease or stop water intake, helping safeguard this vulnerable species.

T-Mobile’s award-winning 5G network plays a pivotal role in the Center’s conservation efforts by linking acoustic receivers to an aquatic hub, enabling real-time tracking of sturgeon movements, even in remote areas of the James River. Additionally, T-Mobile’s IoT Control Center empowers VCU to streamline SIM card management in the receivers, optimizing data transmission, reporting and device oversight. These capabilities enhance both research accuracy and operational efficiency for more impactful conservation outcomes.

Enhancing Education and Outreach

The Center’s project, currently the largest real-time acoustic telemetry system on the East Coast of the U.S., is making a global impact. To offer a model for conservation that can be widely adopted, the Center showcases its telemetry data to researchers worldwide, including at institutions like the ZSL (Zoological Society of London), as well as local schools, where students are introduced to conservation efforts through live demonstrations of sturgeon-tracking data.

VCU is also developing a website that will allow students and educators to access past telemetry data, incorporating it into lesson plans and projects. This initiative will provide all schools with the ability to contribute to the growing field of environmental research.

Looking to the Future with AI

The Center is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze data and predict sturgeon movements more accurately. While current predictions can only forecast a day or two in advance, future AI developments could give power companies additional time to adjust water intake flows and better protect the sturgeon population.

This forward-looking approach, connected by T-Mobile, ensures the project will continue to evolve, further helping to protect the sturgeon’s future in the James River.

Inside his home in Kansas City, Elijah Rush thinks a lot about the future he wants for his wife, two children and baby on the way. In fact, the home he purchased in 2023 represents one of the biggest steps forward in building wealth and providing his loved ones with a place to call home, he said.

“When I think about building wealth, it’s about my children and thinking about their future,” said Rush, who started thinking about his financial journey at age 16. “I remember starting to think about my future, how I was going to live my life and, if I had children, how would they live and would they be okay? I thought a lot about what I went through in my adolescence with my parents who are long-time renters, and I wanted something more.”

Wealth building, particularly the benefits of homeownership, was something Rush was particularly focused on, but he needed help getting started. So, one day in 2022, he walked into his neighborhood U.S. Bank branch and met Marla Dickinson, a mortgage loan originator who said she finds particular joy in helping first-time homebuyers on their journey to buying a home.

“When I first met him, I thought Elijah was looking to break barriers, that he was eager for knowledge and looking for a person who’s going to help guide him,” Dickinson said. “Everyone starts their homebuying journey at a different place – and Elijah had so many questions about the process I was happy to answer.”

Dickinson and Rush worked together for more than a year to help him become mortgage-ready. Through this process, they worked on building credit, putting a savings plan in place and more.

After finding a home he wanted to make an offer on, and as part of this, Rush attended a homebuyer education class hosted by Dickinson. After that session, Rush came back to the branch and asked if he could ask the seller of a home to cover closing costs. Dickinson said yes, and Rush negotiated the cost to be covered so he could buy the house that is now his.

“That moment stands out to me,” Dickinson said. “Even today, I talk about him with prospective homebuyers to say that if you are intentional and you are putting your all into learning about the resources out there, anything is possible.”

Rush qualified for and used the U.S. Bank American Dream home loan, created to help buyers overcome the thresholds to homeownership. The American Dream mortgage is available to qualified buyers in 26 states, providing downpayment assistance, the option to put as little as 3% down, additional assistance funds that can be used toward closing costs or required repairs, and mortgage insurance paid for by U.S. Bank.

Looking back on this process and reflecting on where he is today, Rush said “there’s less stress and more understanding about finances. I know how to maneuver with money, comprehend what is going on and look toward the future.”

As for what the future holds, Rush is building a fruit and vegetable garden at his home to help feed his family, he said, and has dreams of being a farmer to provide for his loved ones and community.

“Owning a home is investing in me and my family, and for people who are just starting the homebuying process – it’s okay for it take time to be in a place to buy,” Rush said. “Now I know my money is going toward investing in a home to pass on to my kids and build generational wealth for them.”

This year is on track to be the hottest on record. Wildfires, floods, and droughts are mounting. And climate-driven refugee crises span continents.

That’s why Climate Week NYC 2024 — with its theme of “It’s Time” — was so critical. Hosted by the international non-profit Climate Group, in conjunction with the U.N. General Assembly and New York City, it brought together a far-ranging mix of government, industry, academia, and activists.

All share the same overarching goal: to drive action on climate — before it’s too late.

For Cisco, Climate Week is a unique opportunity to showcase its innovation, global influence, and leadership on an issue that is central to its purpose: powering an inclusive future for all.

During her Climate Week sessions, Mary de Wysocki, Cisco’s SVP and chief sustainability officer, highlighted a few of the ways Cisco exercises that leadership. It includes everything from innovating more energy-efficient networking solutions and circular-designed products to setting stringent 2040 net-zero goals and supporting its vast global customer base on their own sustainability journeys. Moreover, the Cisco Foundation’s 10-year $100 million climate commitment is helping drive important work in areas like carbon capture and wave energy.

“Cisco is a worldwide technology company that securely connects everything to make anything happen,” de Wysocki said. “But we ask, how do we solve those business problems while using newer technologies to make the world a better place, a more secure and sustainable place?”

And as Guy Diedrich, Cisco’s SVP and global innovation officer, stressed, the company’s focus on climate change has deep roots.

“Cisco’s role in helping contribute to reducing climate change is profound, and it has been around for a very long time,” he said. “Before anybody was talking about climate change, Cisco was leading the industry in practices that help us contribute to the betterment of populations and the environment around the world.”

Today, when Cisco products become more energy efficient, as well as modular, recyclable, and reusable (that is, circular), the benefits can cascade across industries, countries, and continents.

“We are working hand in hand with our customers on how they’re adopting similar approaches as us, and adopting renewable energy,” de Wysocki explained. “It means innovating our products to be more energy efficient, like our Silicon One chip, which adds more capability in an ever-increasing, energy-efficient way. And it means that when we design our products that we’re thinking about how to make them more modular and circular.”

In terms of circularity, Cisco is making progress on its goal of incorporating Circular Design Principles into 100 percent of new products and packaging by fiscal year 2025. And in its latest G200 version, the Silicon One chip is twice as energy efficient as its predecessor.

“With service providers we’ve seen really healthy numbers of energy savings and energy efficiency,” said Denise Lee, vice president of Cisco’s Engineering Sustainability Office. “And now our strategy is to take that Silicon One chip and make it available beyond service provider, and into the enterprise.”

When smart equals more sustainable

Artificial intelligence was top of mind throughout Climate Week, both for its great potential in sustainable innovation — such as enabling smarter grids, buildings, and factories — and for its massive energy needs. To that end, Cisco’s efforts to increase data-center capabilities with innovations like Silicon One and the UCS X-Series Modular System, while reducing their energy needs, loom large.

“Now we’re looking at AI workloads,” Lee explained, “and whether you have a brand-new training model or you’re just playing around with it, the reality is everyone needs more and more compute and more and more capacity. So, we need to be thinking about how to do that with energy efficiency.”

Lee spoke of how Cisco is infusing AI into many areas, such as smart buildings and data centers to renewable energy grids and agriculture.

“When you start thinking of where you can apply data and sensors and then what that data can do from an AI perspective to be smarter and more automated,” she said, “that opens up a world of opportunities to more quickly find solutions and then deploy those solutions at scale.”

The grids supplying those energy-hungry data centers (and just about everything else!) are another key focus for Cisco. The company has a long history of partnering and innovating with the energy sector, and today it’s helping utilities transition to a more sustainable, efficient, and secure future. That includes supporting renewable sources like wind and solar, which along with their many benefits can create new complexities across a more distributed grid (as opposed to one centralized power station).

So, it’s a perfect opportunity for automation, AI, and machine learning in applications such as load balancing and monitoring for anomalies or threats — as top Cisco customers like Enel, Italy’s largest energy provider, are discovering.

“Forward thinking utilities are increasingly considering digital technologies as a part of their architectures,” said Kelsi Doran, head of sustainability strategy and transformation for Cisco. “It enables them to have better visibility into their entire OT network so they can do things like more efficiently balance the load of supply and demand. Utilities are adopting these things so they can not only accelerate the clean energy transition, but their digital business-model transformation as well.”

With end-to-end solutions for utilities, Cisco, Doran believes, is uniquely positioned to support this transition.

“What differentiates Cisco in this space,” she said, “is our unrivaled security expertise, our end-to-end portfolio, especially in our networking solutions, our automation, our management capabilities, and of course our Internet of Things expertise. We can provide that connectivity, that visibility, that security across the entire grid network.”

Increasing sustainability, where we live and work

By some estimates, the building environment is a source of up to 40 percent of global carbon emissions. So, smart buildings are a critical focus for Cisco. And New York’s Climate Week was a great opportunity to showcase the company’s Penn One office. Built with hybrid work in mind, it’s a visually inspiring, hyperconnected design with many features that can reduce energy use, such as automated window shades to maximize natural light.

Cisco’s smart building solutions also help reduce energy consumption through 90-watt Power over Ethernet (PoE) and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that can provide network-based monitoring and control of temperature, lighting, air quality, and more.

“A building or a room requires the network,” Lee stressed. “And when you can start thinking of where you can apply data and sensors — and then what that data can do from an AI perspective to be smarter and more automated — it opens up a world of opportunities to more quickly find solutions and then deploy those solutions at scale.”

Working together to meet the biggest challenges

Diedrich, who oversees Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) and Networking Academy tech skills programs, stressed that Climate Week’s theme of working together is closely aligned with Cisco’s strategy.

“The CDA program has been around for just over 10 years, and we have around 1600 active or completed individual digitization projects in 51 countries,” he said, “and the thing that we learned is that you will not have the sort of success that you want without involving government, industry and academia. You have to have all three sitting around at the table from the start. And it’s never been more true than our projects related to sustainability.”

As but one example, Diedrich cited CDA’s partnership with Kerala, India, to empower farmers with IoT data insights on weather, soil, water management, limiting pesticides, and other support.

It’s a theme championed by de Wysocki.

“When I look at the number of companies like Cisco that have set net zero goals across their value chains, that gives me hope,” she concluded. “When I look at the technology advancements, when I think about how we’re designing products and solutions that are ever more energy efficient, when I see the number of investments in renewable energy, that gives me hope. But it’s going to take all of us coming together.”

PLANO, Texas, October 3, 2024 /3BL/ – PepsiCo Foods North America® (PFNA) today announced the 30th anniversary of its partnership with Feed the Children® in the fight against childhood hunger and the 3.2 million households facing food insecurity across the U.S. The anniversary highlights the transformative impact of their collective efforts on providing long-term, sustainable solutions in the fight against hunger nationwide.

Since 1994, the two organizations have expanded their impact to more than 30 communities across the U.S. by providing food, essentials and educational supplies to those in need. Together, PFNA and Feed the Children are committed to driving systemic change by serving students, families and teachers in various communities.

Pilot program turned scalable solution

Working to address unmet needs across underserved school districts, PFNA and Feed the Children co-created Food & Essentials Hubs, a first-of-its-kind initiative launching resource rooms in Title I schools across the U.S. – allowing for consistent deliveries of shelf stable food, hygiene and household items, as well as books and other educational materials. The initiative has served more than 123,000 students and families to date – helping combat food challenges for students and families, while reducing stress and stigmatization related to lack of sufficient essential items.

Food & Essentials Hubs were created to combat the increase in food insecurity among households with children brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. With food insecurity rising to 13.6% and food pantry usage increasing across most types of U.S. households, PFNA seized the opportunity to help, leveraging its unique position as a global food leader.

What started as a pilot program during the pandemic is now a scalable solution to meet the needs of many communities. One of which is Detroit, Mich., where a food and essentials distribution event will be hosted today, benefiting 400 students and families from the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Employee volunteers play a critical role in making these events and resulting impact possible, with more than 36,000 volunteer hours completed by PepsiCo employees to date.

Reflecting on what it means for an employer to provide these opportunities, Kenneth Wright, sales director at Frito-Lay and a Detroit Public Schools alumnus, shared, “It makes me proud to work for a company that allows me to give back to my community. I’m incredibly passionate about this annual effort to give back to Detroit students in need because I lived it. Too many communities lack a sense of community – the support for each other to thrive – and I see how this partnership helps fill the gaps to ensure students have a more successful tomorrow than they did today.”

The program’s success has led to the national expansion of these hubs, and this year will support 370 schools across Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando and Phoenix.

Creating measurable impact

Since the Food & Essentials Hubs launch, participating schools have reported a significant increase in student confidence and school attendance. Having access to food and resources not only helps combat hunger, but it also reduces stress, improves grades and increases student engagement – specifically:

87.5% of districts felt that the program improved classroom attendance.75% of districts felt that the program improved classroom behavior.87.5% of districts felt that the program increased students’ self-confidence.
