Alabama Power will develop the state’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) on the former Plant Gorgas site in Walker County, which reliably powered Alabama for more than a century.

The new Gorgas Battery Facility will store up to 150 MW of electricity generated by other Alabama Power resources. 150 MW is equivalent to the capacity needed to power about 9,000 homes.

“This facility will help Alabama Power understand how we can best use battery systems on our electric grid so that customers have power when they need it,” said Jeff Peoples, Alabama Power Chairman, President and CEO. “The project honors Plant Gorgas’ legacy, which has played a significant role in powering the state of Alabama since 1917.”

The 7-acre facility will be designed as a standalone system that will connect to and charge directly from the electric grid – the interconnected system of high voltage wires and equipment that moves large amounts of electricity across the state.

Construction will begin in 2025, with estimated completion by 2027. The lithium iron phosphate batteries that will make up the system will have a 2-hour duration, with the ability to recharge in a little over 2 hours.

“Batteries can charge when energy costs are lower and discharge when energy costs are higher, helping keep costs down. They can also supply energy to our system quickly in response to changing conditions,” said Brandon Dillard, senior vice president of Generation. “We are excited to learn how battery storage technology best fits into our system to reliably serve our customers.”

Batteries also have the potential to help integrate additional clean energy resources into the company’s generation mix, providing complimentary technology for variable, weather-dependent resources, like solar.

“As we work to make our system stronger and smarter, innovative technologies such as battery storage could help ensure a steady energy supply,” Dillard added.

The decision to reuse the retired Plant Gorgas site illustrates Alabama Power’s focus on sustainable solutions that reinforce its community commitment.

“Plant Gorgas and Walker County hold a special place in our company’s history,” said Jill Stork, vice president of Western Division. “The reuse of this site reaffirms our support of the communities we have long served, ensuring sustainable solutions that honor our past while looking to the future.”

Hear from some of our women experts from across innovation, manufacturing, design, sales and more.

Sarah Dale, Plant General Manager, International Paper

“I never imagined I would be working in manufacturing. My grandmother applied to go to college to study the arts and was told that wasn’t really where a woman needed to go. My mother had a really deep interest in electronics and circuits and was dissuaded as well. I met an IP recruiter at a college career fair and learned about the company’s culture and focus on environmental stewardship. It was then I decided to establish my career with IP.”

Rhiannon England, R&D Process Development Engineer, DS Smith, an International Paper company

“The only way we’re ever going to have female role models in STEM is if we encourage more women into the field. Over time, we’ll have more female scientists and more people making contributions.”

Sabrina Townsend, Global Manager, HR Service Delivery, International Paper

“The mill in my town was very popular. People were excited to work there. You had made it if you worked at the mill. Today, my friends often ask me, why are you so happy going to work? I’m one of the few people who say ‘I love my job.’ I really get an opportunity to do what I do best every day, and that’s really pouring into the lives of others.”

Jasmine Norton, Operations Improvement Engineer, DS Smith, an International Paper company

“It is so important to attract not just women, but people from diverse backgrounds into STEM. The only way to grow and move on is to have diverse opinions.”

Annie Marechal, Madrid Mill Manager, International Paper

“When I began my career in the paper industry more than 30 years ago, there were few women in technical and management positions, but change is possible. Every step we take opens new doors for future generations. IP is not just a benchmark in safety and sustainability, but we are also really serious about creating an inclusive work environment, where every employee can develop his or her potential and contribute to the growth of the company and the community in which we operate.”

Ana Soldo, Subregional Managing Director, DS Smith, an International Paper company

It cultivates an empowering environment built on clear goals, mutual respect, continuous learning opportunities, open communication, work-life balance, and ethical leadership that values and supports employees. By making people feel truly valued, such a workplace unlocks their full passion, dedication and potential to thrive.”

Southern Company

Southern Company was again named to FORTUNE’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies for 2025. The company was listed No. 1 in the electric and gas utilities industry in social responsibility to the community and the environment, financial soundness and long-term investment value.

Dating back to its early beginnings, Southern Company has operated under the ethos of “being a citizen wherever we serve,” ensuring positive impact on each community within the places we live and work. The robust economic activity in the Southeast, complimented by constructive regulatory environments, provides a sound foundation for regular, predictable and sustainable long-term growth.

Exemplifying its recognition for financial soundness, every quarter for 77 consecutive years, Southern Company has paid a dividend to its shareholders that is equal to or greater than the previous quarter.

The World’s Most Admired Companies list is the definitive report card on corporate reputation. Since 1997, FORTUNE has identified, selected and ranked the World’s Most Admired Companies, identifying the business practices that make these companies highly regarded among their peers.

Southern Company’s overall score rose from 6.4 in 2023 to 6.9 in 2024, ranking as one of the top two electric and gas utilities in eight of the nine graded attributes. Among its peers, Southern Company ascended to No. 2 in the categories of innovativeness and wise use of corporate assets. This latest edition saw the company ranked as the world’s No. 2 most-admired electric and gas utility overall.

The ranking bookends a robust 2024 year for Southern Company, highlighted by the completion of the Plant Vogtle expansion project that saw the site emerge as the largest generator of clean energy in the United States. Also garnering recognition was the systemwide efforts made during the recovery from Hurricane Helene, one of the most-devastating storms in the history of the Southern Company service territory. Further details regarding recent accolades collected by the company can be found on the Southern Company website.

Survey Methodology

Fortune collaborated with Korn Ferry on this survey of corporate reputations. The publication began with about 1,500 candidates from a pool of the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue, along with non-U.S. companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database that have revenues of $10 billion or more. The list was narrowed to the highest-revenue companies in each industry, a total of 650 in 30 countries. The top-rated companies were picked from that pool of 650; the executives who voted work at the companies in that group.

To determine the best-regarded companies in 51 industries, Korn Ferry asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate enterprises in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value and quality of management and products to social responsibility and ability to attract talent. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed.

Originally published on Saint-Gobain Newsroom

Saint-Gobain Ceramics, through its subsidiary Saint-Gobain NorPro, recently announced its intent to build a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Wheatfield, New York. The facility will revitalize an historic industrial property as the company expands its production of catalyst carriers to serve a fast growing market. With an investment of over $40 million, the company expects to create approximately 30 new full-time jobs upon the completion of the nearly 125,000 sq. foot facility.

The new facility in Wheatfield, which will be co-located with Saint-Gobain Ceramics’ existing Specialty Grains and Powders operations, will expand NorPro’s abilities to manufacture ceramic catalyst carriers that are vital to many industries such as energy production and refining, biofuels and chemical manufacturing. Currently, NorPro operates North American facilities in Bryan, Texas, Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, and Stow and Norton, Ohio.

Construction is planned to begin later this year, with full project completion expected by 2028. Building design and construction will use many of Saint-Gobain’s light and sustainable building solutions to create a state-of-the-art, energy efficient industrial campus. In an effort to maximize the efficient use of materials for construction and minimize waste, Saint-Gobain plans to repurpose many of the currently viable structures on the campus, utilizing repurposed materials to further reduce embodied carbon emissions on site through circular practices.

“We are excited for NorPro to join the Niagara County community. Our new manufacturing facility in Wheatfield will become our second North America manufacturing site for our catalytic products and will enable us to meet rising customer demand,” said Tihana Tresler, General Manager of Saint-Gobain NorPro. “We thank the Wheatfield community, Niagara County, the New York Power Authority and the State of New York for their support.”

The project is supported with funds from local and state economic investment programs, including $1 million from the New York State Excelsior Program, and other state and local investments. In addition, Saint-Gobain has applied to expand its existing relationship with New York Power Authority (NYPA) to provide additional hydropower for the site expansion.

“We are excited that Saint-Gobain is making an investment in our community that will create new jobs and significantly improve the site on Walmore Road,” said Niagara Country Legislator Rich Andres, Chairman of the Economic Development Committee. “I want to recognize the great efforts of our team at the Niagara County Center for Economic Development for working in partnership with Saint-Gobain to move this exciting project forward. This is the first step to revitalizing the former Bell Aerospace footprint.”

“Upstate New York is becoming a global competitor in advanced manufacturing, thanks to the state’s strategic investments in a skilled workforce, quality of life benefits, and innovative academic-industry partnerships,” said Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Hope Knight. “Western New York was shaped by the might of manufacturing, and there’s no question that the increase of investments by global companies will further add to the region’s growth.”

Saint-Gobain owns over 160 manufacturing locations in the United States and Canada. A current list of job openings at all Saint-Gobain locations, including those in the Greater Buffalo area, can be found on the company’s career website.

Today’s announcement comes as Saint-Gobain celebrates its 360 year anniversary, and continues to strengthen its commitment towards creating industry solutions which create value and have a positive impact on people and the planet.

ATLANTA, March 10, 2025 /3BL/ – Georgia-Pacific Recycling, a leading trader of recyclable paper, plastic, and metal, is thrilled to share that its online platform, hubbIT, was named a finalist in Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business’ 2025 Marketing Awards for Excellence in Innovation.

Launched in June 2023, hubbIT gives smaller volume recycled materials producers fast and easy access to upfront pricing on more than 50 grades of recyclable paper, plastic, and metal as well as streamlined access to everything Georgia-Pacific Recycling offers its larger volume suppliers. This includes an extensive buying network, logistics and transportation management, convenient scheduling, timely and reliable payments, one-on-one support, and the assurance that Georgia-Pacific Recycling will always manage contracted customers’ recyclable waste, even if the value falls below $0, and the company won’t send it to the landfill.

“All of us at Georgia-Pacific Recycling are honored to be recognized for our efforts to open the recycling marketplace to the tens or even hundreds of thousands of businesses that are currently left out or face significant barriers to participating,” said Blake Gordon, general manager of digital trading with Georgia-Pacific Recycling, referring to businesses that aren’t currently being paid as they could be for their recycled waste.

Gordon continued, “hubbIT has the potential to generate new profit centers for businesses, improve U.S. recycling rates, and divert more recyclable waste from landfills. Being honored by MAX Innovation will go a long way in helping us reach this new customer base and in achieving our goal of driving environmental responsibility for future generations through increased landfill diversion.”

In its first 18 months, hubbIT suppliers collectively received more than $1 million from Georgia-Pacific Recycling and prevented more than 14 million pounds of valuable recyclable paper, plastic, and metal from being landfilled.

Georgia-Pacific Recycling was honored at the 2025 Future of Marketing Conference, which took place in late February in Atlanta. The event is produced in collaboration with the Georgia State University Department of Marketing and its Marketing RoundTable at the Robinson College of Business. The Marketing RoundTable is one of the longest-running Marketing RoundTables in the country, comprising more than 50 senior marketing professionals representing many of Georgia’s premier companies.

LINCOLN, Neb., March 10, 2025 /3BL/ – Arbor Day Carbon, a subsidiary of the Arbor Day Foundation, has retired over 1.6 million forestry carbon credits on the American Carbon Registry (ACR) — more than any other nonprofit — and helped plant and protect millions of trees as a result.

“Every carbon credit we retire is a win for the present and future of our planet and a record of real, measurable impact,” said Chris Tointon, president of Arbor Day Carbon. “For us, these 1.6+ million retired credits aren’t just numbers on a page. They are a representation of ecosystems restored, forests protected, and communities strengthened.”

Retirement is the final stage of a carbon credit’s life cycle, indicating the credit’s intended benefit (verified emissions removal or reduction) has been achieved and claimed by an organization against their hard to avoid emissions. Arbor Day Carbon’s over 1.6 million retired credits were accomplished through large-scale reforestation and improved forest management projects in the United States.

Arbor Day Carbon has also collaborated extensively with other leading organizations on the American Carbon Registry to help expand the reach and impact of the voluntary carbon market.

“Partnership is foundational to our work. Its why we’ve been able to retire more ACR forestry carbon credits than any other nonprofit, while also helping other organizations reach their goals,” said Jeremy Manion, managing director of carbon markets for Arbor Day Carbon. “We all achieve more when we symbiotically work together.”

In addition to the over 1.6 million ACR forestry carbon credits retired by Arbor Day Carbon, the organization has also transacted approximately 6.4 million more forestry carbon credits on leading global standards Verra, Plan Vivo, and Climate Action Reserve. As a team of industry experts, Arbor Day Carbon specializes in fostering strong connections with corporate buyers, investors, project developers, and on-the-ground planting partners to create tangible benefits for critical ecosystems.
