Las Vegas Sands

On Sept. 13, the National Hispanic Institute hosted a celebration to honor 84 Las Vegas high school students who participated in its leadership development programs this year, marking the organization’s fourth year in Las Vegas through funding from Sands Cares.

“With its continued support for our Las Vegas program, Sands is making an investment in bright futures for local students and the community, as we aim to give participants the skillsets, confidence and inspiration to invent ideas and actions for community advancement,” Nicole Nieto, executive vice president of NHI, said. “Some of this year’s graduating seniors completed the entire NHI journey, and we’ve seen their growth and increased confidence as strong, capable leaders.”

NHI’s curriculum aims to cultivate future civic and business leaders by developing participants’ skills in communication, community advocacy and policy-making, while preparing them for success in higher education.

Rising sophomores enter NHI’s program to prepare for the Great Debate, which emphasizes communications skills as a tool for self-advancement and community change. Rising juniors participate in the Lorenzo de Zavala (LDZ) Youth Legislative Session, which exposes students to governance, organizational development and policy design, and rising seniors participate in the Collegiate World Series, which has a dual focus of preparing students for college admissions and community leadership. Each program emphasizes asset-based thinking and trains youth to view themselves as capable of affecting change through their own resources and strengths.

The September celebration culminated the students’ participation in these progressive leadership development programs over the past year. After the event, Las Vegas students reflected on the empowering impact of the NHI experience:

Abbey Messner, senior, West Career and Technical Academy

“These programs teach you how to collaborate with different people from different geographies, who may have different ideas and ideals than you. I’ve heard so many different ideas and experiences, and I really feel so grown and mature because through NHI, I’ve gotten to interact with people from all over the world.

“Because of these programs, I have changed my plans from pursuing a pre-medical degree, and I want to become a lawyer. I realized it doesn’t matter how nervous I may feel speaking in front of people – I want to advocate for people. Being a part of NHI has brought that to light for me.

“NHI helped me find my community and helped me improve my skills and realize how important my impact is. I learned you can speak out. I get to be a whole new person because NHI gave me a safe space to try anything.”

Emmanuel Gutierrez, senior, West Career and Technical Academy

“What I remember most is the friends I made at the programs and the moments we shared. Being together for a week allowed me to foster strong connections and make long-lasting relationships.

“NHI has prepared me for the future by opening doors by networking with college recruiters and NHI staff. I learned so much about the college application process, and it has made my application so much more manageable.”

Moises Medina, senior, Rancho High School

“My most important takeaway was how powerful, loud and impactful someone my age can be. It might sound a little cliché, but doing NHI has really helped me find my voice and taught me the importance of advocacy. I gained the skills of leadership, advocacy and empathy. Talking with the other participants and learning about each other’s stories really shows how stories can impact and help someone.”

Selena Orejuela, senior, Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School

“The most important takeaway from NHI is learning that leadership is not about waiting for change but becoming the change yourself. NHI gave me a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a Latino community that is dedicated to shaping the future, and it showed me that I have the ability to take initiative, build community and lead with purpose.

“NHI has prepared me for the next phase of life by teaching me to seek opportunities and embrace challenges with determination. Beyond academics, it showed me the importance of vision-driven leadership and gave me a community of peers who also believe in creating a brighter future for Latinos. The lessons I learned at NHI will continue to guide me as I move into college and beyond.”

Sands helped bring NHI to Las Vegas in 2022 and has supported the leadership development program annually since then. This summer, Sands Cares funding enabled NHI to introduce the Heroes, Heroines and Legends program as an entrée to NHI’s curriculum and its asset-based thinking approach. Since 2022, NHI has provided transformative learning experiences to more than 140 Las Vegas students.

Sands’ support for NHI is part of the Sands Cares focus on education and building the workforce of the future. To learn more about the company’s education initiatives, read its latest ESG report: https://www.sands.com/resources/reports/.

I’ve covered a few angles of the food tracking story over the past few years. I use a food tracking app myself (on and off, not constantly), and I believe they can be helpful, but only for those people who want to use them. They definitely aren’t for everyone—especially if you are someone who can easily become obsessed with tracking data. But now we have a new crop of food tracking apps available, and artificial intelligence (AI) powers them. Does that mean they’ll be better at helping you improve your eating habits and health? Let’s take a look.

AI Food Trackers vs. Traditional Tracking Apps

Traditional calorie tracking apps usually require a lot of tedious manual entry work. You have to search a big database for the correct food and brand (and hopefully choose the most accurate listing). Then you have to specify how much you ate, and then repeat that throughout the day without forgetting anything that passed your lips. Many apps now offer barcode scanning, which makes things easier and saves time. And now AI has come along with the next big step in food tracking.

AI trackers eliminate much of the manual entry work because they use photo recognition. You simply snap a picture of what you ate (or verbally describe what you ate), then add any relevant information (like you cooked the chicken with olive oil or used yogurt-based dressing on the salad), and the app does the rest. Within a few seconds, you’ll see estimated data on what you ate, including total calories and the macronutrient breakdown. The AI apps generally allow for manual entry of foods or barcode scanning too. So if you’re familiar with traditional food tracking apps, you have some overlap of skills. Some AI trackers also connect with Apple Health, providing a one-stop place to track your physical activity and food.

Downsides to AI Food Tracking Apps

Like any new technology (and especially with new AI-powered tech), there are some cons to consider with AI food trackers like SnapCalorie and CalAI. Here are the biggest ones:

  • Inaccuracy: While the apps never claim to be 100% accurate, the truth is that they are woefully inaccurate. The more people use them, the better AI will become over time. But you’re taking two-dimensional photos of three-dimensional food and expecting AI to pick up on things it cannot see. That’s not going to be as accurate as using measuring cups and a food scale and entering the information yourself.

  • It Still Takes Time: We can add AI food tracking to the long list of things that aren’t as simple as they seem. Depending on the app, you may find yourself doing more than snapping pics. You’ll need to edit for ingredients that the app doesn’t know, and perhaps correct the amounts of certain ingredients. This is because the app isn’t great at differentiating between ¼ cup and ¾ cup of tuna fish on a plate, for example. By the time that’s done, you may have defeated the purpose of taking the quick pic in the first place.

  • May Perpetuate Preoccupation With Calories: It’s not surprising that many people who are interested in AI food tracking are also interested in fat loss or weight management. Unfortunately, none of the AI apps are good substitutes for consulting with a registered dietitian. The apps frequently set calorie targets too low or the rate of weight loss too fast. And calorie-counting apps aren’t known for their nutrition nuance. So they may not send up red flags about your food intake when you need them. If you’re someone who might become obsessed with food tracking in general, or if you have an eating disorder, it may be best to avoid food tracking apps.

What Health Benefits Might AI Food Tracking Offer?

Keeping tabs on caloric intake is the main function of these apps, but that’s not all they do. In fact, given the potential for caloric inaccuracy, you might be interested in image-based food trackers for other reasons. While the field is still young and growing rapidly, current AI apps provide benefits including:

  • Prompts for more balanced, complete meals at regular intervals
  • Recipe ideas tailored to health goals or needs
  • Help shopping for healthy foods (don’t forget the Guiding Stars Food Finder app can help you find healthy foods too, for free)
  • Flags for potential health issues with meals you’ve logged (low in fiber, high in sodium, etc.)
  • Support for more intuitive eating (the Intuitive Eating Buddy app, for example)
  • Guidance with mealtime mindfulness exercises and prompts
  • Increased awareness of food intake overall and habitual eating (the AteMate app, for example)
  • Support for meal planning

Did you know that some of the air you breathe comes from beneath your feet?

In part five of our 10-part series about the environmental benefits of turfgrass, we’ll look at how lawns help you breathe easy.

Benefit #5: Increasing oxygen production

Lawns are significant producers of oxygen through photosynthesis. A 2,500-square-foot lawn generates enough oxygen to meet the daily needs of a family of four, while a single acre of natural turfgrass produces enough oxygen for 64 people every day.

Trees and indoor plants get a lot of attention for the oxygen they generate, but the blades beneath your feet work hard to make oxygen-rich air as well.

In fact, some studies suggest that turfgrass can produce more oxygen than trees on an acre by acre basis because of the high density of individual grass blades and their rapid growth rate.

A dense, green lawn is a clear sign of robust photosynthesis. To maximize this process, focus on fundamentals: mow high, fertilize appropriately and water deeply but infrequently. These steps will grow a thriving lawn that looks good and works hard to create the oxygen you breathe.

Stay tuned for Benefit #6 in our series on building an eco-friendly lawn.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health challenge impacting millions of people around the world and with the potential to lead to even greater disruptions to care if not addressed. AMR threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.

Viatris takes a multi-pronged approach to actively engage in addressing AMR, both by providing access through our portfolio of more than 90 antimicrobials and in partnership with others, including as a founding member and active board member of the AMR Industry Alliance (AMRIA).

In 2024, the UN General Assembly convened a high-level meeting among heads of state to secure the highest level of political commitment to address AMR globally through the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Political Declaration on AMR. Contributing to these ongoing political discussions, global news organization Foreign Policy, Viatris and other stakeholders co-hosted the “A World Without Antibiotics – Confronting the Global AMR Challenge” simulation. This meeting convened leaders and experts from government, industry and civil society to work through a simulation exploring solutions to avert the potentially devastating outcomes of unchecked AMR. During the event, Viatris and AMRIA

called on member states to ensure universal, equitable, affordable and sustainable access to quality assured appropriate antibiotics and diagnostics as well as to prevent and address the drivers, sources and challenges of the environmental dimensions of AMR.

As the co-chair of the AMRIA Access working group, Viatris led the development of the AMRIA Equitable and Responsible Access Roadmap, published in February 2024, through a consultative and evidence-based process. The roadmap is a global policy tool focusing on increasing global access of people to appropriate and high-quality antibiotics. It highlights key barriers to diagnostics and antimicrobial access and outlines solutions to tackle the global barriers of regulatory issues, demand forecasting and procurement challenges.

Promoting a Scalable Model in the Fight Against AMR

In 2024, Viatris collaborated with BBC Storyworks to raise awareness about PLATINEA (PLATform for INnovation of Existing Antibiotics), a unique multi-stakeholder collaboration in Sweden that includes academia, healthcare, public health authorities, public payers and regulators and the pharmaceutical industry to find solutions to AMR. The campaign highlighted the PLATINEA model beyond Sweden, sparking discussions within and beyond the policy and medical communities about replicating this initiative in other regions and driving global momentum in the fight against AMR.

Whirlpool Corporation, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, and Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business are marking a major milestone in their long-standing collaboration: 15 years of building hope and homes together in Bloomington, Ind. This year’s build constructed five new net-zero homes in Bloomington’s Osage Place neighborhood as part of the BuildBetter with Whirlpool program, emphasizing the company’s deep commitment to sustainable housing and community building.

“At Whirlpool Corporation, we believe a home is the foundation of opportunity, stability, and well-being,” said Jim Peters, Whirlpool chief financial and administrative officer and Kelley School alumnus. “For 15 years, our work with Habitat for Humanity and the Kelley School has enabled us to put that belief into action. This year’s expanded build is a milestone that reflects our long-term commitment to building thriving and sustainable communities.”

The 2025 build, held the week of October 13, marked the completion of  phase one of the Osage Place development, where nine of the homes, including the five net zero homes built this year, are climate resilient and energy-efficient BuildBetter with Whirlpool homes. In addition, the City of Bloomington has awarded $250k in grants for solar panels for 30 homes in this community to help continue the sustainable housing efforts from the BuildBetter with Whirlpool work.

“Every home we build is more than just walls and a roof; it’s a step toward generational change for families,” said Wendi Goodlett, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. “Thanks to the unwavering support and the energy of Whirlpool Corporation and IU Kelley students, five more families will soon have a safe, affordable, and sustainable place to call home. Together, we are creating not just houses, but thriving neighborhoods that embody hope and resilience.”

Launched in 2021, the BuildBetter with Whirlpool program has supported the construction of 260 climate-resilient, energy-efficient homes across the U.S., delivering an average of 45% energy cost savings per family, compared to the average new home, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15% per home. In the program’s current phase, it will deliver 50 net-zero energy or net-zero energy-ready homes in the next two years with features such as solar panels, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems and energy and water efficient appliances based on the homeowner and geographic needs.

Volunteers remain at the heart of these builds, including Whirlpool employees, Monroe County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, and students from IU’s Kelley School of Business. Beyond construction, Whirlpool is also investing in workforce development by engaging IU students through professional development opportunities and hands-on building experiences.

“This collaboration demonstrates the power of learning by doing,” said Pat Hopkins, dean of the IU Kelley School of Business and the James R. Hodge Chair of Excellence. “Our students don’t just study leadership and social impact in the classroom–they live it through meaningful projects like these builds. By working alongside Whirlpool Corporation and Habitat for Humanity, our students gain invaluable experience that will shape their futures while leaving a lasting mark on their community.”
