Neebe: One of the reasons I came to Duke Energy is because we are leading one of the largest clean energy transitions in the country. Our mission is to power the lives of our customers and the vitality of our local communities. As energy demand doubles and possibly triples by 2050 across our service territory, we need to significantly grow energy generation, retire 16 gigawatts (GW) of coal, and modernize the energy grid. We need to do that in a way that provides reliable, affordable, and accessible energy while also meeting our net-zero ambition. The engineering, environmental, and social considerations to achieve this are significant. But there’s a real upside to the story too. As we look at our 10-year $145 billion capital spending plan, we anticipate that our clean energy transition is expected to bring roughly $250 billion in positive economic outputs, from job creation to property taxes.

But those benefits aren’t all future focused. For example, our economic development team continues to be successful in attracting growing companies to the communities we serve. In 2022 alone, the team secured 89 projects resulting in more than 29,000 new jobs and over $23 billion in capital investments. In addition, our supply chain spend is also an important avenue for strengthening local economies. Last year we spent $14 billion overall on supplier goods and services, more than $5 billion with local suppliers and over $1.8 billion with diverse suppliers.

Eccles: Let’s dig in a little on the energy industry. Duke Energy has ambitious climate goals. How are you driving change in your role?

Neebe: We have net-zero from electric generation goals by 2050 for Scope 1, 2, and certain Scope 3 carbon emissions and net-zero methane goal by 2030 for our natural gas business unit. That means that 95% of our calculated GHG footprint, from our own emissions to those across our value chain, is now encompassed in a net-zero goal. In 2022, we took additional steps toward action on climate change by targeting energy generated by coal to represent less than 5% of total generation by 2030 and to fully exit coal by 2035 as part of the largest planned coal fleet retirement in the industry. To date, Duke Energy has already seen a 44% reduction in Scope 1 carbon emissions from electricity generation since 2005.

With our net-zero goals established, we also need to consider the social issues affiliated with the clean energy transition from the impact of coal plant retirements (also known as the just transition) to where we site and build new infrastructure (including topics such as environmental justice and NIMBYism) to guardrails for those low-income customers who may be struggling with meeting basic needs. Again, I’d reinforce that there is a net positive economic upside to our clean energy transition; our role is to manage the risks and the value creation in a way that is balanced for our customers and communities.

InSinkErator, the world’s leading brand of garbage disposals, has introduced the next generation of disposals for today’s modern kitchen. Completely redesigned to grind more types of food waste and do so quietly, the new Power and Advance Series disposals feature the company’s re-engineered MultiGrind® and SoundSeal® Technology. InSinkErator has also simplified installation on these units with the new EZ Connect technology.

Invented, designed, and assembled in America, this next generation of disposals demonstrates the commitment InSinkErator makes to innovation in today’s modern kitchen, providing an environmentally friendly solution for managing food waste. Over 85 years ago, InSinkErator revolutionized the way food waste was discarded in the kitchen, and it continues to be a category leader.

“Providing products for cleaner, fresher, more sustainable kitchens has been our focus for more than 85 years,” said Joe Dillon, president. “Now, we’re proud to take the next step in combining our easiest installation technologies with our quietest and most advanced grinding technologies that will make disposing of food waste and leftovers quicker and easier than ever.”

According to the EPA, every year, food waste contributes to 18% of total U.S. methane emissions that come from landfills¹,. An average family of four produces over 600 pounds of food waste each year.², ³ Using an InSinkErator® garbage disposal helps divert food waste from landfills – benefiting the community and slowing the acceleration of climate change. The new and improved garbage disposals from InSinkErator have been designed to grind food waste into finer particles that easily flow through household pipes, giving homeowners more confidence to use their disposal without fear of plumbing issues.

“Most homeowners have a real desire to maintain a more sustainable kitchen but truly don’t understand the impact of food waste on the environment and how a garbage disposal can help.” said Mark Cammarota, vice president of marketing. “We have exciting educational programs for both professionals and homeowners on why you shouldn’t throw food waste in the trash and how our new InSinkErator disposals help you better manage your food waste.”

The educational programs include working with influential plumbing professionals, like master plumbers Roger Wakefield and Eric Aune, both of whom are highly influential with plumbing pros on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. InSinkErator is also launching a clever marketing campaign featuring the comedic voice of Wanda Sykes that will focus on educating homeowners on why it’s important to not throw food waste in the trash and how the new InSinkErator disposals have the power to grind most of your food waste.

In celebration of International Day of the Girl in October, Arrow is furthering its commitment to extending STEM and enterprise education opportunities, especially for girls, by donating to nonprofits around the world that align with this mission.

The International Day of the Girl is an annual observance that began in 2012 as a global effort in championing girls’ rights and breaking gender-based barriers for women. This year’s theme calls attention to the disadvantages and disparities of millions of girls under 25-years-old who do not have access to the internet.1

Arrow is supporting nonprofits in the global STEM community to provide students with critical opportunities, resources, and tools to help them enter their desired professions and reach their career goals. This includes investing in programs that expand access to STEM education for girls, with an emphasis on instilling confidence and leadership skills.

“Just as we look to engage women in growing and advancing their careers at Arrow, we recognize our unique position to do the same for young girls in our communities,” said Gretchen Zech, senior vice president and chief governance, sustainability, and human resources officer. “This includes inspiring them to join the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and builders.”

Recently, Arrow contributed to the following STEM nonprofits:

FIRST Global, dedicated to inspiring leadership and innovation in youth from all nations by empowering them through education in STEMSTEM Next Opportunity Fund, supporting the Million Girls Moonshot initiative that seeks to engage one million more girls in STEM learning opportunities over the next five yearsPenang Science Cluster, developing programs designed for female students to gain insight into the engineering and technology industryGirls Go Circular, supporting schoolgirls to develop their digital and leadership skills while finding solutions for a sustainable future

Studies show that women remain underrepresented in STEM leadership positions when compared with their male counterparts, resulting in fewer role models and mentors for girls interested in pursuing STEM careers.

October 10, 2023 /3BL/ – American corporations still have a long way to go towards fully including Hispanics at all echelons of employment, on corporate boards, among suppliers, and among recipients of philanthropic resources, according to the 2023 HACR Corporate Inclusion Index™ (CII) Report released today. The report aggregated data from 92 participating corporations, the majority of which are Fortune 500 companies.

The Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility’s (HACR) CII report has been the source for comprehensive reporting on Corporate America’s Hispanic inclusion strategies since 2009. The 2023 HACR CII examined Hispanic corporate inclusion practices from 2022.

“The data show the there’s still a long way to go towards full economic reciprocity for Latinos in the corporate sector,” said HACR President and CEO, Cid Wilson. “But this report also gives us hope. Despite the very real backlash against diversity and inclusion generally, some of the country’s largest companies demonstrated their commitment to measuring Hispanic inclusion by taking our survey. Returning participants get a clear picture of their progress year over year, and new participant companies establish a baseline.”

Key findings include:

TALENT PIPELINES & HIRINGAmong all participating companies, 13% of interns at participating companies are Hispanic.73% of Hispanic employees at participating companies are non-exempt.C-SUITE & BOARDS7% of individuals on boards of participating companies are Hispanic.55% of companies have at least one Hispanic individual on their Board. 5% of CEO direct reports identify as Hispanic.SUPPLIERS & PROCUREMENTFewer than 1% of suppliers are Hispanic.Just over 1% of total spend is with Hispanic-owned businesses. Philanthropy10% of corporate give went to the Hispanic community.Nearly 20% of foundation give went to the Hispanic community.

The HACR Corporate Inclusion Index™ Report is conducted by HACR’s Research Institute to measure Hispanic inclusion in HACR’s four pillars of economic reciprocity: Employment, Procurement, Governance, and Philanthropy. This year, 92 companies participated in the report and of those, 39 were listed in the Fortune 100 last year. Participating companies represented a cross-section of industries including commercial banks, diversified financials, financial data services, pharmaceuticals, health care, insurance and managed care, pharmacy, telecommunications, and general merchandisers among others.

Utilizing a five-star rating system, HACR recognizes excellence in Hispanic inclusion with companies that document best practices in DEI and are progressing towards greater Hispanic inclusion. This year, the Washington-based nonprofit awarded three companies 5-Star ratings in all four pillars of inclusion: Comcast NBCUniversal, Edison International, and Medtronic PLC. HACR celebrates their partnership and commitment to the advancement of Hispanics and acknowledges all 2023 participating companies for their demonstrated dedication to data-based benchmarking and actionable change.

Despite monumental strides, equitable access to quality education remains both a North American and global challenge. According to UNICEF, 264 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school, and the United Nations estimates that by 2030, 300 million students will not have basic numeracy and literacy skills needed to succeed— unless additional measures are taken now.

Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS’) goIT program is one of many initiatives trying to change this reality.

“We believe today’s youth can lead positive change when armed with creative ideas and the transformative potential of digital technology,” said Lina Klebanov, TCS’ Head of Corporate Social Responsibility in North America. “We’re using our goIT Monthly Challenge for October to help the younger generation lay a solid foundation for a brighter future and to ensure quality education and literacy are more accessible.”

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental human right and one of the most powerful tools for lifting people from poverty to prosperity. It reduces health disparities, narrows the gender gap for women and girls, removes economic disadvantages and barriers for broad groups, and more. In fact, UNESCO data reveals that if all adults completed secondary education, globally the number of poor people could be reduced by more than half. These are the reasons the United Nations has targeted ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all as its 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4. They are also the reasons TCS is partnering with Ek Kadam Aur Foundation and Wolters Kluwer to present the October goIT Monthly Challenge.

For the October goIT Monthly Challenge, TCS and partners invite students aged 6-18 to submit a three-minute video pitch for a digital innovation designed to help close the global literacy gap. The pitch should describe and explain the elements of a purposeful digital innovation — such as an app or a website — that can help address this significant world issue and, if actualized, which would make the world a better place. Winners can earn prizes, recognition, opportunities for mentorship and more.

Submission instructions and additional information about the October goIT Monthly Challenge is available at on.tcs.com/goIT-ENG.

A finger lickin’ success for education initiatives in Orleans Parish

This year’s National Fried Chicken Festival brought together thousands of people around a shared love of great food, music and culture – and amongst many of those festivalgoers were public school educators.

As part of Entergy’s ongoing commitment to investing in our communities, we hosted the first-ever complimentary Teacher’s Lounge – an exclusive area at the festival for teachers and staff to enjoy VIP seating, live music, food and drinks.

“Entergy has long been committed to supporting education and we are thankful to our teachers for everything they do to invest in the future of our students,” said Patty Riddlebarger, Entergy vice president of corporate social responsibility. “The Teacher’s Lounge is our way of saying thank you to our educators who work tirelessly to make our communities a better place.”

During the festival, Entergy New Orleans president and CEO Deanna Rodriguez, presented a $2.2 million check to support public education in Orleans Parish for the 2023-2024 academic school year.

“With this investment, we will support initiatives that focus on empowering school leaders and educators, equipping students with tools and technology and fostering an inclusive learning environment,” said Rodriguez. “We will strive to nurture the talents and aspirations of our students, ensuring that they have the tools they need to succeed in our communities.”

Since 2006, Entergy shareholders have invested more than $26 million in supporting public education in Orleans parish. In addition to this investment, Entergy also launched Kids to College earlier this year, a free child savings account program, for low-to-moderate income families across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, designed specifically for post-secondary education.

Through Entergy’s Kids to College program, families can open a savings account free of charge, invest their savings and watch it grow. When a family plans for their child’s future by setting aside funds for college, the child is four times more likely to complete a degree. Eligible families can sign up for a Kids to College my529 account here with the help of our community partners and receive a $50 deposit from Entergy.

Together, we continue to invest in the future of our students and communities, to build a brighter tomorrow.
