DP World, a key player in global logistics, is making significant strides across the Americas. Whether it’s an ambitious expansion in Peru, strategic acquisitions in the U.S., celebrating milestones in Brazil, or elevating trade infrastructure in Canada, DP World’s narrative is one of relentless growth and innovation.

Handling more than 10 percent of the world’s cargo through its facilities, the Dubai-based company is a recognized global leader in ports and terminals – but as trade dynamics evolve, the company has undertaken a significant transformation program to evolve from solely port and terminal operations to becoming a leading provider of end-to-end supply chain solutions. And the Americas are a key player in DP World’s mission to enable efficient, sustainable global trade.

Solidifying DP World’s Footprint in South America

South America continues to celebrate its rapid growth as a global trade hub. DP World has a strong presence across the region, with established port, terminal and logistics operations in Argentina (Rio de la Plata), Brazil (Santos), Chile (San Antonio and Lirquén), Suriname (Paramaribo), Peru (Callao and Paita), and Ecuador (Posorja).

The company is making several strategic investments that will help position South America to play a pivotal role in the broader trade dynamics of the Western Hemisphere:

In Peru, the port of Callao is undergoing the Muelle Bicentenario Project, a significant expansion project that will ramp up terminal capacity by 80% and enable the port to handle 2.7 million TEUs annually by April 2024.In Ecuador, DP World’s partnership with Emergent Cold Latin America at DP World Posorja is set to lead the way in refrigerated storage solutions, bolstering its suite of climate-controlled integrated logistics services throughout the region. And in Brazil, DP World is investing USD$35 million to revitalize its operations at the Port of Santos, where it recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its operations in-country. The company began operations at the Santos terminal in 2013 with an initial annual capacity of 1.2 million TEUs; the expansion will increase annual capacity to 1.4 million TEUs.

The company also plans to open new freight forwarding hubs in Panama and Mexico, which will complement its existing locations and help amplify its logistics service offerings across the region.

Boosting Trade and Sustainability in Canada

In Canada, DP World operates terminals in Vancouver, Prince Rupert, Surrey, Nanaimo and Saint John, and is Canada’s largest container terminal operator.

The company recently celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its operations at the Port of Vancouver, which is a major economic driver, generating $240 billion in trade, underpinning more than 115,000 jobs translating to $7 billion in wages, and injecting nearly $12 billion into Canada’s GDP.

The recent culmination of the US$260 million Centerm Expansion Project at the Port of Vancouver underscores its role as a key conduit for global trade and project cargo. This landmark project enlarged the terminal’s area by 15%, propelling the container capacity from 900,000 TEUs to an impressive 1.5 million TEUs – and in doing so, significantly elevated Canada’s trade infrastructure.

The project also underscores a commitment to sustainability: facilitating electric connectivity for container ships, transitioning from diesel to electric cranes, curtailing vehicle wait times at train crossings to lower emissions, and adhering to esteemed LEED and Envision sustainability certifications.

Bolstering a Caribbean Trade Powerhouse

The Dominican Republic has been a strategic location for DP World since it first commenced operations in 2003. Today, the Punta Caucedo peninsula serves as the premier trade and logistics hub in the Caribbean, providing a gateway for cargo redistribution across the Caribbean, U.S., Central America, and South America. Plus, its proximity to Punta Cana International Airport further enhances the ability to provide cargo management services for an international crowd.

To help expand the Dominican Republic’s role as a central freight and logistics hub for global markets, DP World will be launching a new air cargo logistics hub within the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone by year’s end. This state-of-the-art logistics center is designed to seamlessly integrate air, land, and maritime cargo operations.

Expansion and Acquisition in the U.S.

The U.S. is pivotal to DP World’s blueprint for growth. DP World’s Americas regional office is in Charlotte, North Carolina, where ambitious expansion plans are underway that include opening a brand-new regional headquarters in early 2024.

In 2021, DP World enhanced its end-to-end solutions portfolio with the acquisition of syncreon, a U.S.-based contract logistics provider. Based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the acquisition added a range of supply chain solutions in the Americas primarily serving the automotive and technology sectors as well as other clients requiring third-party logistics (3PL) and more.

The U.S. is also a critical element in DP World’s freight forwarding expansion plans as well. The company plans to open nearly one dozen new offices across the U.S. within the next 12 months; these locations will complement DP World’s established presence in Vancouver and Latin America while helping to expand its contract logistics capabilities across the region.

Reshaping the Future of Global Trade

DP World’s impressive progress across the Americas highlights its commitment to remain a leader in global trade and logistics. From South America to Canada, the Caribbean to the U.S., the company is consistently aligning its operations with the evolving dynamics of international trade.

This approach, which goes beyond their historical emphasis on port and terminal operations, represents a holistic vision of the future: one where end-to-end supply chain solutions are the bedrock of efficient, sustainable global commerce. Through strategic acquisitions, infrastructure upgrades, and a robust focus on innovation and sustainability, DP World is not just preparing for the future of trade – it is actively shaping it.

A rising global population. The increasingly unpredictable climate. Lack of access to new agricultural technologies. These are just a few challenges smallholder farmers face every day, and they need innovation to improve the diversity and bounty of our global food system.

There isn’t a single solution to alleviate these complex problems. As Bayer seeks for ways to assist smallholders – whether through breeding innovation, better crop protection products or partnerships, like the one we have with Better Life Farming – we know farmers are seeking numerous innovations that will enable them to prosper. And we’re helping deliver.

Here are three of those innovations.

1. Bolstering Crop Resilience

Crop loss can conjure images of pest and weather challenges, all of which affect farms around the globe differently – but field challenges are just one piece of the puzzle. Smallholders also need innovations to minimize food loss in transport.

Innovation Example: Cucumber Hybrids

It can take 5-7 days for cucumbers to reach consumers, sometimes traveling over 250 miles a day.In countries like India, where heat can degrade crops, early maturity and long shelf life are imperative as farmers race against time to get their product to market. Our two Seminis cucumber hybrids, Malini and SV7298, are offering a perfect solution. Thanks to breeding innovation, these high-yielding hybrid cucumbers mature early and offer an extended shelf life of 10-12 days, helping farmers get produce to market earlier and minimize post-harvest losses. In addition, their high fruit uniformity pleases consumers and allows growers to sell their crops at a higher price.

2. Planet-Pleasing Precision

Droughts and weather variability are also factors in crop losses. Thankfully, irrigation innovations can help smallholder operations stabilize – while both pleasing our planet with saved resources and relieving global food security with increased yields.

Innovation Example: Sustainable Drip Irrigation

Reliable access to water and irrigation leads to significant increases in yields: Irrigated land is twice as productive as rain-fed land.In India, the Better Life Farming (BLF) Alliance provides rural smallholder communities with access to high-quality agricultural inputs through a “last mile delivery” model. Through partnerships, BLF seeks to enable farmers to further develop their farming potential. To do so, Bayer offers high quality seeds (like the above cucumber hybrids and many others) and crop protection products, and drip-irrigation specialist Netafim provides access to water management tools.Through the combination of our portfolio offerings in the alliance, BLF empowers smallholders to irrigate their high-yielding plants in the most efficient way possible, boosting productivity while preserving water resources – its especially effective for solanum crops like tomato, pepper and eggplant.

3. Knowledge Empowers

While increasing yields and crop resilience is important, it doesn’t mean much if smallholders don’t have access to training and certification programs that open up market opportunities and food chain linkage. Our BayG.A.P. initiative supports farmers worldwide in that regard.

Innovation Example: BayG.A.P. Initiative

Offers training, tailored farm advice and verification support on Good Agricultural Practices (G.A.P.) to farmers in person on the ground, as well as through an innovative online training program. Since the program’s launch in 2017, more than 13,500 farmers worldwide implement what they have learned in field trainings, and more than 360,000 have been reached through participation in BayG.A.P. digital trainings. In Thailand, BayG.A.P. trainings are important stepping stones for more than 1,700 farmers in the Chanthaburee region to obtain overseas export certifications for their durian fruit. This market access also avoids local food waste, as G.A.P.-certified growers can sell their produce to the entire food supply chain. In Ecuador, where the aggressive Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) fungus is threatening banana plantations, special BayG.A.P. trainings broadcasted via local radio stations and YouTube help inform farmers about the most effective way of preserving the spread of the disease. Through a combination of traditional and social media, the BayG.A.P. team was able to share best practices with an incredible 4.2 million people. YouTube live trainings with BayG.A.P. TR4 experts showed widespread participation, with more than 21,000 farmers completing the video sessions.

Innovation Keeps Smallholders Productive and Profitable in a Sustainable Manner

Despite the many challenges smallholder farmers face – from climate conditions, access to agri-inputs and market linkage – we’re empowering them to become more productive and profitable. Because the more innovation we can make available to them, the better they can feed their communities, improve their livelihoods and benefit our global food system.

Julian E. has never squandered an opportunity to help out his fellow Cintas employee-partners at the Rental Location in Union, N.J.

“He’s always the first to volunteer,” said his General Manager, Doug Rader. Julian is also the first to take on additional responsibility beyond his role as a utility worker, truck loader and Stretch & Flex captain.

“He’s the captain of wherever he works,” Rader said. “Everybody gravitates to him. He’s got a great personality, and (employee-)partners love to talk to him.”

Julian has neural developmental delays with autistic tendencies and is among the employee-partners Cintas salutes year-round, including during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. His contributions are especially important at his location where he’s worked for four years.

“I enjoy working with everybody who needs a helping hand,” Julian said.

There was a time when he needed a helping hand – after Hurricane Ida hit the northeast part of the country in 2021. Julian was at work, and his mom was at home when the storm hit. Afterward, they tried to salvage their personal belongings and seek shelter.

Julian said he and his mother “bounced around from a hotel to another hotel” after being displaced by the storm. The Cintas Partner Assistance Fund provided aid to the duo as they regained their bearings and searched for more permanent shelter.

“I was like, ‘Let me live in a safer environment than it was before.’ And my mom was hoping that for me, too,” Julian said.

Just last year, Julian moved into his own apartment. It was close enough to work that he could ride his mountain bike to and from work. Julian upgraded his mode of transportation to an electric motorbike just a couple of months ago and has relished his independence and new ride.

He appreciates the safe, supportive environment he has experienced at Cintas, especially after the chaos of Hurricane Ida. The family-like employee-partners at Cintas have helped foster his confidence, and he believes sharing his story will inspire other employee-partners with disabilities to find similar support.

Speaking of support, he’s a huge fan of Cintas holiday parties. They are among his favorite reasons for working at the Rental location in Union, N.J. “You cannot miss” the holiday party, Julian said, although he admitted Halloween is pretty great, too.

Julian’s can-do attitude and elite work ethic keep him busy during the workweek, whether he’s processing mats, unloading trucks, loading trucks, or working hand-in-hand with Service Sales Representatives.

His contributions are greatly valued at Cintas.

“I love working with Julian,” Rader said. “He’s always got a smile on his face, and he’s always trying to do the best that he can for all the other (employee-)partners.”
