Each year, the Baker Tilly Foundation provides grants of $10,000 to not-for-profits nominated by our team members. Learn about a powerful organization fighting to restore hope and freedom to survivors of human trafficking and exploitation.

Saving lives, restoring freedoms

Public Sector Advisory Consultant Ian Wilson and his fiancée, Brynn, volunteer weekly with Red Oak Hope, which aims to stop trafficking and exploitation of women and children around the globe through a comprehensive support network. Together, Ian and Brynn find purpose in improving the lives of others, both locally and globally.

“Witnessing how Red Oak Hope has transformed lives motivates me to contribute to their mission in any way I can,” Ian said.

Operating from Austin, Texas, Red Oak Hope empowers survivors of trafficking in the U.S., China, Uganda and India with vocational training, counseling and temporary housing. Since 2012, they have served more than 500 people by providing over 6,000 hours of safe shelter and 8,000 hours of vocational training. Notably, Red Oak Hope also repatriates survivors of international trafficking. This program has successfully returned over 110 women and children to their home countries.

Maximizing the impact of stewardship

Red Oak Hope’s mission is built on the belief that, with the right resources, anyone can find hope and rebuild their lives. While attending the organization’s annual gala, Ian was deeply moved by the stories of transformation told by survivors.

“These women were once trafficked in China, and now they are thriving in their careers,” Ian said. “It’s incredible to see how their lives have changed.”

The $10,000 grant from The Baker Tilly Foundation will allow Red Oak Hope to expand its support services for women seeking to escape exploitation. Just $22 provides one night of safe shelter for a mother and her child, $40 provides one week of meals and $1,500 can provide repatriation services for a victim of international trafficking.

Sometimes, the career path you’re on doesn’t allow you to achieve your full potential. At Koch, reaching out to your supervisor can help you better understand where you are and where you want to be.

Take Yashaswini B N, for instance. When Yashaswini (Yash for short) joined Koch Global Services in Bengaluru, India, she performed well as a Planview demand analyst. Still, she knew she had more to offer if given the opportunity. With her sights set on becoming a project manager, a role that would allow her gifts to truly flourish, Yash needed to find a viable path toward reaching her goal. She started that professional journey by initiating a dialogue with her supervisor, Suresh Sundaresan — a conversation about her future career aspirations that had actually first begun during her interview for the analyst role.

Taking the Next Steps Together

“I remember that, at the time, Suresh wasn’t just focused on the job’s role requirements,” says Yash. “He wanted to understand me, my broader gifts and talents and how we can grow together.” In fact, Suresh could see that Yash wanted to contribute in ways outside the typical role requirements for a demand analyst. Once she started at KGS, they met routinely to discuss her interests and how she could best use her gifts. “Yash had such a great aptitude and attitude,” Suresh says. “I could see she wanted and could do more, so I asked her about her aspirations. She answered, ‘Okay, what about project management?’”

“When I learned about the principle of self-actualizing, I realized I was missing out on something in my life. So first, I identified my interests and skill sets. Then I stopped and asked Suresh about them,” Yash says. Suresh decided the best way to determine if Yash would perform well in project management was to allow her to take on small projects alongside her regular duties and evaluate her performance. That methodical process allowed Yash to grow and learn in a safe environment. “We had a lot of good discussions along the way,” Suresh says. “Yash doesn’t just listen. She asks questions, gets answers and applies what she has learned. As a result, she was able to showcase her value to the organization quickly.”

Settling in and Taking Flight

Within five months of their initial conversation about becoming a project manager, Suresh completely moved Yash into her new role. Today, as a project manager for KGS, Yash helps own and drive projects from discovery to completion. “I’m an enabler for my team to succeed,” Yash says. “And it’s my responsibility to ensure I deliver projects on time.” Looking back, the deep trust she placed in her supervisor proved to be invaluable in her journey. “Nothing can happen unless and until I have a trusted, authentic relationship with an individual and understand what they are truly capable of,” Suresh says, “and helping colleagues to self-actualize by moving them into the right roles will maximize value for Koch.”

First in Singapore to publish Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD); aligning with Target 15 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework [1]
Conducted International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) Standards gap analysis; expanded disclosures in CDL ISR 2024 to include Group data with the aim for full alignment by FY 2025
First corporate to secure the OCBC 1.5°C sustainability-linked loan, Singapore’s first net zero-aligned loan

City Developments Limited (CDL) has released its Integrated Sustainability Report (ISR) 2024, marking its 17th sustainability report since 2008. Themed “Zero in on Nature”, the digital report focuses on CDL’s progress towards achieving its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals and targets under the CDL Future Value 2030 Sustainability Blueprint. The report aligns with global and local climate and nature goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the blueprint is integral to CDL’s business strategies and operations, helping CDL mitigate ESG risks and capture growth opportunities.

Complementing its pledge towards its first stage of Operational Net Zero by 2030, the Company achieved a 14% reduction in total operational carbon emissions across the Company’s business operations in Singapore for the year under review (January to December 2023) compared to 2022. The Company has met its interim 2023 target and is committed to meeting its Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-validated target of a 63% reduction by 2030. As part of its renewed SBTi-validated greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets set in 2021 to align with a 1.5°C warmer scenario, CDL stepped up on integrating and tracking its carbon reduction performance for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Mr Sherman Kwek, CDL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our sustainability-centric business model is anchored on the four key pillars of Integration, Innovation, Investment, and Impact, which will enable us to achieve various deliverables such as decarbonisation and disclosure. This approach has enabled CDL to strengthen our triple bottom line to create long-term value while working towards our net zero ambitions and building nature-positive cities and solutions. CDL is committed to respecting nature, preserving biodiversity, advancing climate action and enhancing green building performance.”

Commitment to nature and biodiversity preservation through TNFD framework

The Company has built up a unique blended sustainability reporting framework comprising the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards at its core since 2008, adding CDP since 2010, the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) since 2013, Integrated Reporting Framework since 2015, SDG Reporting since 2016, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework since 2017, SBTi since 2018, and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Standards and the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) Framework since 2020. This year, CDL adopted the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework.

CDL is one of the pioneering Singapore companies amongst 320 companies worldwide to voluntarily report according to the TNFD Recommendations. CDL aims to assess, disclose and manage nature-related risks and opportunities and provide consistent and comparable reporting to its stakeholders. Adopting the TNFD Recommendations represents a natural progression and expansion of the Company’s sustainability framework since embracing the TCFD Recommendations in 2017. To manage its biodiversity footprint, the Company is using a cloud-based AI platform that supports the measurement and management of biodiversity impact by relying on data-backed information.

Transition towards full compliance with ISSB’s S1 and S2 requirements

In June 2023, ISSB launched the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2 globally. In February 2024, Singapore announced mandatory Climate-Related Disclosures (CRDs) in a phased approach, in line with the recommendations from the Sustainability Reporting Advisory Committee (SRAC). Starting from FY 2025, listed issuers such as CDL will be required to report ISSB-aligned CRDs.

To prepare for the transition to the new standards, CDL worked with an external consultant to perform a comprehensive gap analysis evaluating its sustainability disclosures in ISR 2023, focusing on TCFD and SASB disclosures against the ISSB Standards’ CRDs. The gap analysis revealed that CDL’s disclosures are largely well-aligned with the ISSB Standards. CDL’s ISR 2024 has been expanded, where applicable, with a view to transiting towards full compliance with ISSB Standards by FY 2025.

[1] Adopted in December 2022 during COP15, this framework supports the achievement of the SDGs and aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. Target 15 focuses on having businesses and financial institutions assess, disclose and reduce biodiversity-related risks and negative impacts.

CNH reinforces its commitment to open and collaborative innovation by receiving, for the second year in a row, the Golden Cube Seal. The award highlights companies, startups, partners and investors of Cubo Itaú (an international startup community in Brazil) that have stood out in the last year. This time, the company was recognized in the Engagement category, which integrates connections, challenges, and proofs of concepts carried out in the last year.

The award event took place at the end of February, in São Paulo (SP), at the headquarters of Cubo Itaú. “This award shows that our approach and culture of decentralized innovation is generating tangible results and becoming a differentiator for CNH. Our people are increasingly involved and engaged, making connections that go beyond the sector, being trained and sharing knowledge and technology to create, face challenges and foster business growth,” said Maurício Infantini, Innovation PMO at CNH.

Last year, CNH was awarded in the Challenge Generator category, as the company that published the most challenges on the Cubo Network platform in 2022. The company is also among the 10 largest applicants of invention patents in 2023, in a survey released by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), also being among the leaders of private companies that invest the most in patents, in addition to being recognized as the most innovative in the Automotive and Large Vehicle Sector and the tenth most innovative in Brazil by the Valor Innovation Award 2023.

With more than 40 employees from different areas acting as focal points in the Cube, CNH and its brands developed projects, created connections and business opportunities with the innovation ecosystem. This award is a demonstration of the company’s commitment to innovation in technology for a brighter future for farming and construction work.

Every March, Women’s History Month provides a platform to honor women whose contributions to science, politics, arts, and beyond have significantly shaped our world. This year, Chemours celebrated women within our company who are helping us create a better world through the power of our chemistry—showcasing their unique journeys toward a career in the field of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and sharing their advice for the next generation of women.

Ioana Urseanu is a Manufacturing Technology Site Leader at Chemours’ Dordrecht Works manufacturing site. When asked why she chose a career in STEM, she explained, “I was fascinated by logic and ratio, and believed all phenomena can be explained.”

Today, Ioana plays a critical role as a member of Chemours’ Dordrecht Works Site Leadership team and is responsible for the process technology activities, engineering safety studies, sustainability developments, and new production activities at the site.

Her message to future women in STEM is that “their contribution and opinion matters, it gives more color, additional balance and more diverse thoughts to the group.”

Josie Stoner is a Senior Staff Engineer based at Chemours’ New Johnsonville site who found her passion for STEM early in life. “I was inspired to pursue a career in STEM at a young age due to my love for math and unyielding interest in how things worked.”

She also points to the community around her for guiding her on this path, “My parents, our neighbor, and my teacher all helped foster this love for learning and match the potential career path of chemical engineering to my interests.”

Josie tells future women in STEM, “Don’t exclude yourself from a path STEM solely on the number of equations you have memorized, how many scientific theories you can describe, or even how fast you can solve a calculus problem. Instead, pursue a career in STEM if you have a love of learning and a tendency to ask lots of questions.”

Fátima Reyes, a Finishing/Power House & Utilities Operations Manager in our Titanium Technologies business, has been using her analytical skills to solve problems from a young age. She credits her brother, a chemical engineer, for helping to inspire her career in STEM. “Since I was a child, he always taught me to analyze problems, represent them by numbers, and find solutions.”

When asked for her advice for women who want to pursue a career in STEM, Fátima said, “We need to work together side by side with men and women, to build a better world by applying our STEM knowledge.”

Eva He is a Technical Service Leader for the Asia-Pacific region and has been with Chemours since 2015. She puts her STEM skills and experience to use every day leading the technical services team for lubricants and surfactants in the region. Eva encourages the next generation of women in STEM to embrace their passion. “If you enjoy the fun of STEM, learn it and explore it. Everything is possible for women and girls.”

Bringing together diverse perspectives—like those of Ioana, Josie, Fátima, and Eva—is essential to our company’s growth and innovation. Chemours is actively working to inspire and engage a more diverse group of talent within our company through Employee Resource Groups like the Chemours Women’s Network (CWN). With more than 20 chapters globally, CWN’s mission is to foster a sense of community that will help to support, encourage, and develop women for success.

This year, to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in February, several chapters of the CWN hosted a panel discussion titled “The Different Faces of Women in STEM”. This panel event featured women in STEM at Chemours who provided important perspectives about their career journeys and experiences, and why they believe gender diversity is so critical at Chemours.

The company also strives to be an advocate for women in STEM outside our walls and across the industry.  This year, for International Women’s Day on March 8th, Chemours’ Hydrogen Venture Leader Stefanie Kopchick attended the Women+ in Hydrogen’s 4th annual event in Washington DC where she met with other women leaders in the industry and helped lead a breakout session focused on how to inspire inclusion in the workplace.

At Chemours, we recognize that bringing together people from all walks of life and backgrounds is essential to the future of our company, our communities, and our entire industry. Although Women’s History Month is ending, Chemours’ efforts to foster the next generation of diverse STEM leaders remain as robust as we work together to create a better world through our chemistry.
