The opportunity gap for students of color is a nationwide problem in the United States, but it is particularly prevalent in Minnesota.

Systemic change and funding are needed to reverse the problem, and that’s where the Page Education Foundation comes in.

“Graduation rates tend to be lower among students of color,” says Amanda Moua, executive director of Page Education Foundation. “When the foundation was established over 30 years ago, the founders knew they wanted to focus on Minnesota high school graduates to encourage enrolment in post-secondary education.”

Diane and Alan Page started the foundation in 1988 to encourage Minnesota’s youth of color, generally referring to Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Asian students, to pursue post-secondary education.

Alan Page is a ceiling-breaker in his own right—as the state’s first elected African American Supreme Court Justice and, before that, a National Football League MVP as a star Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman during the club’s Purple People Eaters era.

Beyond providing funding, the scholarship also has a significant service component to it. After being named a “Page scholar,” recipients must complete 50 hours of volunteer service tutoring with students from kindergarten to Grade 8.

“I think it’s brilliant,” says Moua. “Where other scholarships often focus on merit, the Page grants are awarded to students who demonstrate potential and interest in paying it forward, and giving back to their communities.”

“Who better to deliver the message of the value of education to younger students than the recipients themselves, who have gone through similar experiences?”

Enbridge’s partnership with the Page Education Foundation began in 2022, with $25,000 in Fueling Futures funding provided to date to support various initiatives aimed at reducing educational barriers to students of color.

Last year, our $15,000 Fueling Futures donations supported the foundation’s Justice Flourishing Gala in the spring, and a Justice Alan Page Elimination of Bias Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar in December.

“As a process that usually involves a mountain of paperwork and takes considerable time to secure, we were blown away with how quickly Enbridge got on board to help our cause,” says Moua.

The 2023 Elimination of Bias CLE Seminar concentrated on the elimination of gender bias by addressing toxic work environments and promoting a culture of respect and fairness. The event featured broadcast journalist Gretchen Carlson of Minnesota as the keynote speaker.

Moua has been with the organization for 11 years and is as dedicated as ever to ensuring the next generation of changemakers is a diverse one. Beyond enrolment, she is focused on not only getting students in college, but making sure they stay.

Isolation is a major reason why students don’t continue their post-secondary education path. It’s especially important that students feel connection to their campus and school environment to keep them on track for graduation.

“It’s not just about money,” she says. “Students, particularly minorities, need to be rooted in their community so they can lean on their support to see their educational journey all the way through.”

The first time someone hears about Wine To Water, they may be curious about the name. Is it a biblical reference? Does it have to do with drinking wine? Or is someone actually trying to reverse wine fermentation into its most basic elements? Wine To Water’s name has proven to pique the interest of stakeholders around the world as it continues to gain traction in three years of partnership with Lenovo. On World Water Day, we’re proud to review what we’ve accomplished so far with Courtney Mattar, Director of Partnerships for Wine To Water. Together we’re making plans for future impact to come as we empower Wine To Water’s mission with Lenovo technology and talent.

So – where does the name Wine To Water come from?

Courtney: We get that question a lot. It’s not biblical or focused on drinking wine – though we don’t discourage it! At WTW, we often say “wine is our culture, water is our cause”. Wine represents our global community of changemakers and agents of change gathering together for a greater cause – to change the world through the power of clean water. Wine To Water is all about humility and empowerment, and our founder, Doc Hendley is an example of how people can be activated to create positive, scalable change.

What is Wine To Water, and how are you changing the world through clean water?

Wine To Water (WTW) is a global non-profit preserving life and dignity through the power of clean water. We develop WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) solutions in direct partnership with local leaders, creating impact beyond water. Our team works relentlessly to improve environmental sustainability, education, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and economic growth. We are active in Nepal, Dominican Republic, the Amazon, and Tanzania. The WTW Emergency Response team is currently in Pakistan, Morocco, Turkey and Syria performing earthquake and disaster relief. In 2022 the team responded to disasters in eighteen countries, including the United States Florida and Mississippi), the Philippines and Ukraine.

How have you partnered with Lenovo?

Lenovo’s global philanthropy works to share the company’s greatest strengths – diversity and innovation – with communities. We’ve been able to guide Lenovo to share these strengths in new and different ways for their philanthropy program. It started with a simple Filter Build volunteer project during their annual Love on Month of Service. When they started exploring the intersection of sustainability and their core mission of diversity in STEM education, the touch points only grew. We’ve been able to support and integrate with Lenovo at their signature events, support their response to natural disasters, engage their employees in service, create a feature documentary on our work together, all the while integrating more and more Lenovo technology into our tech fleet. Much like Wine To Water’s own origin story, we’ve watched this partnership come from humble beginnings and quickly grow legs of its own.

Watch the video here

On World Water Day, what do you think about the intersection of technology and access to clean water?

Today is important because unfortunately, the issue of water access isn’t going anywhere. As Lenovo experts have shared and as we’ve seen in the field, climate change will only complicate communities’ access to clean water as some communities experience an excess of water through floods while others experience drought. We need to be working to conserve and use water mindfully. While we’re usually working to create access to clean water for communities or providing filtration tools during disasters and crises, the strategies and resources we’re using at Wine To Water may one day be useful to communities whose otherwise steady access to clean water is being threatened.

We’re proud to work with Lenovo because they are looking closely at the water usage and disclosing it annually to experts at CDP.

What’s next in your partnership with Lenovo?

After the success of volunteer trips with Lenovo employees in Nepal, the Amazon, and the Dominican Republic in 2021, we’re proud to be working with Lenovo to provide a volunteer trip opportunity for Lenovo employees and college students. Applications are open until April 1 and we’re thrilled to offer another life-changing experience for volunteers through our Lenovo partnership. Beyond volunteerism, we’ll continue to work with Lenovo to deploy water filters in times of crisis, helping to mitigate the many water-borne diseases that can occur when infrastructure is damaged during disasters. We look forward to contributing to Lenovo’s efforts to manage its water usage to ensure sustainability for communities around the world, and a smarter future for all.

Tax season isn’t just a time to gather all your necessary paperwork together in time for the filing deadline. It’s also a chance to review your financial wellness and make plans for the year ahead.

If you’re expecting a tax refund, Chad Wolfe, our favorite money coach and student loan specialist at the My Secure Advantage financial coaching program, has offered some awesome tips to help you make the most of it.

“At tax time, optimizing your income tax withholding is key to keeping your finances on track,” says Chad. “By ensuring you’re not overpaying or underpaying taxes throughout the year, you can better manage your cash flow and avoid any surprises come tax season. It’s a strategic move that puts you in control of your money, allowing you to make the most of your hard-earned income.”

Maximizing your return is something Chad also commonly refers to as “stretching your dollar.” What if you could save a majority of your refund, stretch those bills and take advantage of some amazing deals? For instance, Metro by T-Mobile just unveiled a deal for new customers to get the iPhone 12 5G for just $99 — with no activation fee and no trade-in required when you switch, which comes out to $530 in savings. No-contract brands like Metro are a great option for people who are looking for a premium wireless experience free from credit checks, added taxes or fees, extra fees for 5G and surprises. Switching to Metro could help you save money and boost your financial independence.

Chad uses examples like this in coaching people to take more control and plan for the year ahead. More of his top tips for financial wellness include:

Build an emergency fund. If you don’t already have one, your tax refund can be a great way to start. It’s recommended to have three to six months of living expenses saved up for those unexpected financial emergencies, like a sudden job loss or a major medical expense.Tackle high-interest debt. If you’re carrying credit card debt or a personal loan with sky-high interest rates, using your tax refund to pay it down can save you a ton of money in the long run. Plus, it’ll free up more cash in your monthly budget.Max out IRA contributions. Your tax refund can go towards funding your IRA and help you save for retirement. And if you contribute to a traditional IRA, you may even get a tax deduction. For 2024, the limit for traditional and Roth IRAs are $7,000, and an additional $1,000 on catch up contributions that can be made by those ages 50 or older by the end of the calendar year.Contribute to an HSA. If you have a high-deductible health plan, know that HSAs offer fantastic tax benefits, like tax-deductible contributions and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. It’s a smart way to save for healthcare costs while enjoying some tax perks.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. You can mix and match these strategies to fit your unique situation. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a money coach or a tax professional for personalized advice. Now go make the most of that tax refund! In the second year of transformational investments, PNC continues to improve outcomes for communities nationwide. To learn more about how we’re making a difference in the communities we serve, view the PDF of the full Community Benefit Plan progress report under Documents

Highlights:

Deploys $21.05 billion in home lending, small business, community financing and an additional $126 million in charitable giving to support communities nationwide in 2023Marks notable milestone with completion of $1 billion commitment to challenge systemic racismAt the halfway mark, PNC’s total impact reaches $55 billion

PNC’s latest Community Benefits Plan results show another solid year of performance, with more than $21 billion in loans and investments and $128.5 million in charitable giving deployed to support home lending, small business and community revitalization efforts nationwide in 2023.

“Amid economic uncertainty, we’ve remained focused, doing what’s right, not what’s easy,” said Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer Richard Bynum. “In 2023 we reached significant milestones in the plan – achieving our goal of 10 mobile banking units deployed and fully delivering on our more than $1 billion commitment to challenge systemic racism and advance economic empowerment.”

Two full years into the plan, PNC has deployed more than $56 billion in total funding, representing 65% of the $88 billion pledged to advance economic opportunity for low- and moderate-income (LMI) individuals, communities and people of color during the four-year plan period.

2023 Performance Highlights:

Fueling Future Homeownership
Driven in part by strong demand in new markets, home lending performance continued to exceed expectations. In 2023, PNC provided $13.2 billion in residential mortgage and home equity loans impacting more than 12,000 borrowers in majority-minority census tracts. This critical funding complements PNC’s efforts to advance homeownership in LMI and majority-minority census tracts through strategic initiatives including a newly launched special purpose credit program pilot as well as $10.3 million in mortgage assistance grants provided to eligible homebuyers.

Driving Capital into Small Business
A lack of credit can be a critical roadblock for many small business owners, particularly those in historically underserved communities. That’s one reason we increased investments in small business accelerator and incubator programs across our footprint. In 2023, PNC provided $4.7 billion in loans and investments to support small businesses and farms operating in LMI and minority communities last year, with nearly 26% of total funding directed to support businesses with revenues less than $1 million.

Reinvesting in Communities
Working together, PNC’s lines of business directed $3.2 billion in capital and investments to support small-business growth, job creation, vital community services and impactful affordable housing developments in LMI communities across the country in 2023. As part of a focused effort to expand access to credit in unbanked communities, PNC also increased support for community-based lenders, deploying $93 million in impact investing and loan capital to Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) nationwide.

Creating a Better Quality of Life
In 2023, PNC increased charitable support providing $128 million to help catalyze sustainable and inclusive community development. Two full years into the plan, we’ve awarded a total of $249.8 million in funding–representing nearly 50% of the $500 million in charitable giving pledged over the four-year period.

Company reports historic growth in its field force of financial advisors, its highest-ever dividend, strong investment performance, exceptional financial strength, and rapid expansion of its wealth business – all positioning Northwestern Mutual for continued long-term success

MILWAUKEE, April 1, 2024 /3BL/ – In a year marked by inflation, market volatility, geopolitical conflict and other uncertainties, Northwestern Mutual thrived and generated revenue of more than $36 billion and ended the year with surplus that surpassed $38 billioni – both high watermarks for the 166-year-old financial security company. A robust surplus gives Northwestern Mutual the flexibility to respond to unexpected events, staying strong while upholding the promise to pay claims to policyowners whenever needed. Business results reflected a significant expansion of the company’s field force of financial advisors and representatives, outstanding performance in its institutional investment portfolio, and extraordinary growth in its retail investments and wealth management business.

Each year, Northwestern Mutual delivers both superior product values and exceptional financial strength to its more than five million clients across America. Moreover, as a mutual company, Northwestern Mutual shares its success solely with policyowners in the form of dividends. In 2024, the financial security company expects to pay an industry-leading $7.3 billion – its largest-ever payout, eclipsing its 2023 dividend award by $550 million, and nearly three times the size of its nearest competitor.

Simultaneously, Northwestern Mutual maintained its elite financial strength, a hallmark of the company for generations. In fact, no U.S.-based life insurer has earned higher financial strength ratings. All four of the major ratings agencies – A.M. Best, Fitch Ratings, S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service – once again affirmed Northwestern Mutual with the highest-possible financial strength ratings awarded to any U.S. life insurer.

“No financial services company is stronger than Northwestern Mutual, no company is paying out more in dividends to policyowners than Northwestern Mutual, and no company offers a more comprehensive approach to financial planning than Northwestern Mutual,” said John Schlifske, Northwestern Mutual chairman and chief executive officer. “Despite significant headwinds, we continue to deliver exceptional financial results for the five million Americans who are counting on us to help them build long-term financial security. Our strategy to help clients protect what they’ve already built while creating future prosperity is resonating – and our advisors stand out in the marketplace.”

Well-positioned for generational success

Throughout 2023, Northwestern Mutual continued to strategically invest in the company’s relevance, growth and competitiveness in the financial planning marketplace – as well as its field force of financial advisors and representatives across the country. At year-end, the financial security company grew its field force of financial professionals to nearly 8,000 – a new record.

In addition, a record number of Northwestern Mutual advisors continue to earn industry acclaim. In 2023, hundreds were named to Forbes‘ “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors,” “Best-in-State Financial Security Professionals” and “Top Next-Gen Wealth Advisors” listsiv.
