Carnival Cruise Line to lead the charge as first PortMiami shore power connection

World’s largest cruise company continues to outpace its fleetwide 2030 shore power target

MIAMI, June 17, 2024 /3BL/ – Shore power has arrived for ships docked at PortMiami, and today, Carnival Conquest represented Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, at a celebratory event announcing it will be the first cruise ship to plug into landside electrical power at the cruise capital of the world.

Through an industry partnership between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company and several cruise lines including Carnival Corporation, PortMiami is now the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard offering shore power connections at five cruise berths.

“This is an important milestone for our hometown and we’re proud to support Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and all county and port officials for their amazing partnership in bringing shore power to PortMiami,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We continue to implement important initiatives that have kept us ahead of our ambitious goals to reduce emissions, and this new shore power capability will allow our ships to rely on the electrical grid to power our ships while in port.”

Carnival Conquest’s selection for the inaugural connection at PortMiami comes on the heels of Carnival Corporation surpassing its 2030 shore power goal in 2023, seven years ahead of schedule. The company now leads the industry with 67% of its fleet shore power-capable, meaning it has twice as many ships able to “plug in” than there are ports equipped to provide shore power.

“Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and minimize our environmental footprint,” said Josh Weinstein, chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. “It’s been over 20 years since our company first pioneered shore power for the cruise industry, yet adoption remains limited to just 2% of cruise ports worldwide. We applaud PortMiami for having the vision to recognize shore power as vital to the future of our industry and the planet, and for being at the forefront of their peer group in delivering this capability to cruise ships.”

Energy Efficiency and Reduced Fuel Use

Shore power is an efficient way for cruise operators to switch off ship engines while in port and “plug in” to use energy from the local electric grid to power onboard systems and equipment. Using shore power can reduce total emissions by up to 98%, depending on the mix of energy sources. Carnival Corporation is committed to connecting to shoreside electricity in port when it is available and operationally feasible, and the company is working closely with ports around the world to prioritize investment in this important capability.

Carnival Corporation’s current shore power achievements include:

Two-thirds of the company’s global fleet – 64 ships – are equipped with shore power capabilities and are ready to “plug in” where port connections to electric power are available.Nearly half of its global portfolio of world-class cruise lines boast fleets that are 100%, fully shore power-capable.An additional three ships will be outfitted with shore power capabilities this year, and a recent agreement with Switzerland-based technology company ABB Group will help install an additional 30 shore power connections onboard Carnival Corporation ships over the next few years.

Shore power is one of the many emission reduction technologies Carnival Corporation utilizes to reduce fuel use as part of its overall decarbonization strategy and pursuit of net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Thanks to the aggressive and ongoing actions taken to date throughout the fleet, Carnival Corporation is producing 10+% less total GHG emissions today than in 2011, despite increasing capacity by roughly 30% in that time.

JACKSON, Miss., June 17, 2024 /3BL/ – Entergy Mississippi has committed $425,654 to provide bill assistance and income-based programs to older adults and customers with disabilities. The power company announced the contribution at a recent Mississippi Braves game. The bill assistance, which includes contributions from employees, customers and shareholders, is distributed through Entergy’s The Power to Care program, with the help of The Salvation Army.

While Mississippians know to expect a hot summer, the scorching temperatures can be especially dangerous for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Having power for air conditioning and fans is a necessity, just like food and medicine.

“Extreme heat increases electricity use, causing power bills to rise and creating further strain on budgets,” said Valarie Mabry, public affairs analyst. Mabry helps to coordinate the program for Entergy Mississippi. “However, relief is available, even when there is no reprieve from the weather. We are proud that our employees, customers and shareholders join together to provide assistance for those who need it most through The Power to Care program.”

Entergy Mississippi customers can help their neighbors in need by donating to the program and adding a monthly gift to their bill. To learn more about how to make a one-time gift donation by credit card or check, visit www.entergy.com/care.

All donations go directly to helping our customers make payments on their Entergy bill and are not used for fundraising or administrative purposes. When customers give, Entergy shareholders match the gift, up to $500,000, doubling the impact of the contribution. Donations to Entergy’s The Power to Care program are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. A summary of donations to The Power to Care program are included in the January bill for tax reporting purposes.

Customers having difficulty paying their bill may also qualify for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. LIHEAP is funded through the federal government and works with community action agencies to qualify customers and distribute the funds.

Entergy Mississippi also helps customers manage their energy usage and save money by offering energy efficient upgrades through the Entergy Solutions Marketplace at www.entergy-mississippi.com/energy_efficiency, and providing these quick and easy energy efficiency tips:

Change air filters. Air filters on some air conditioning units require monthly cleaning or replacing.Setting the thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature. The smaller the difference between the inside and outside temperatures, the lower your energy usage and bill will be.Buy a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can help manage costs, is controllable, and can help monitor usage.Use fans to cool off. Ceiling fans, box fans and oscillating fans use very little electricity to circulate the air. Make sure ceiling fans are rotating in the right direction – counter-clockwise during summer – to push cooler air down into the room. Be sure to turn all fans off in unused rooms.Close blinds, shades and curtains to keep the sun out and the cool air in. Also, close air conditioning vents in rooms that are not in use.Seal cracks and holes around doors, windows and ductwork. Weather stripping and caulk will help keep the cold air in and the hot air out.Use the myAdvisor tool on myentergy.com. The usage and cost tool can compare usage history by month, day and hour.

Did you know in 2023 only 29% of the STEM workforce were women*? Logitech is on a mission to close the gender gap in tech with our #WomenWhoMaster global movement. In a new Logitech film produced by BBC StoryWorks, we illustrate how to help close the gender gap in STEM by encouraging girls to explore the many opportunities and possibilities ahead of them, so they can expand and pursue their dreams.

The film takes us to Mogotio, a township in Kenya, where 11-year-old Leddy is captivated by space exploration. Leddy hopes to one day travel beyond our sky, and her ambition grows when Logitech and her teacher, Nelly Cheboi, arrange a classroom visit from Aisha Bowe, former NASA Aerospace Engineer and future Blue Origin Astronaut, who is expanding the frontier of possibility for all women.

The video is part of “The Human Component”, an online branded series developed for the Consumer Technology Association and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Production. Through compelling human-led films, the series reveals the potential of technology to improve people’s lives.

As part of our mission to celebrate, amplify, and enable the rise of phenomenal women in STEM, the film features two of our exceptional Women Who Master partners. Nelly Cheboi, winner of the 2022 CNN Hero award, is the Founder and CEO of TechLit Africa, an organization Logitech is proud to support in its mission to teach vital digital skills in rural African primary schools. Aisha Bowe is the Founder and CEO of two award-winning STEM companies and a Blue Origin astronaut who’ll soon become the first Black woman to travel with Blue Origin on a commercial flight to space.

As Aisha mentions in the video, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” By connecting girls to the support of real-life STEM role models, Women Who Master hopes to dissolve self-doubt and create a future where everyone trusts their ability to succeed in STEM.

Our people making a difference is a series featured throughout Owens Corning’s 2023 Sustainability Report.

In the six years he has served the General Manager for our operations in India, Dhananjay Tapasvi has seen a great deal of change within our businesses. He has developed a keen understanding of our businesses and their potential impacts and the steps needed to mitigate those impacts. As he sees the connections between the expansion of our business and the potential increases in our footprint, Dhananjay is working to ensure that there is a concerted effort across our entire value chain to reduce our impacts throughout the region.

On collaborating across our value chain to reduce our footprint

To be responsible citizens, we have to make sure that the value chain that delivers our energy and raw materials is also looking after the planet in the way that we would do. I see us trying to help the entire value chain, with transportation up and down the value chain, their processes, and their practices, including their labor commitments to following rule of law, making sure they’re not big emitters and being as efficient as possible.

On the urgency of acting to reduce our footprint

With rising costs and supply risks associated with energy and transportation, the need to evaluate alternatives is critical. So, for example, we’re considering use of solar energy for a part of our energy requirements for the furnaces. Similarly, in terms of transportation, we are looking at optimizing how much we put in containers and how we transport materials so that the energy footprint of the transport intensity per kilogram of product moved is reduced. We can’t make it zero, because we’ve got to transport the stuff, but we need to reduce it to the extent that we can.

We’ve also taken a conscious view to be in multiple locations closer to our customers, so we don’t transport as much around the world. We are using local raw materials in India and in other regions, reducing the distance needed to supply these materials. I think that makes us somewhat unique, as it makes for a more sustainable overall footprint.

On the dedication to sustainability specific to Owens Corning in India

We live in an environment in India where people tend to reuse, recycle, and minimize consumption as a matter of need and therefore habit. So we see the need for sustainability around us, and our teams support several programs for the progress of communities in our neighborhood. To be able to give back to those communities that give us the ability to operate is an important part of our definition of sustainability. I think I am very lucky that the teams in India are naturally looking for things to do in terms of having a positive impact. I think it’s good Owens Corning gives them the ability to do something in an organized fashion with some support of structure, funds, and time.
