CHICAGO, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — An image-only artificial intelligence (AI) model for predicting the five-year risk of breast cancer provided stronger and more precise risk stratification than breast density assessment, according to a new study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Senior author Constance D. Lehman, M.D., Ph.D., professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, said traditional methods of assessing a woman’s risk for breast cancer, including age, family history, genetics and breast density, are inadequate.

“Over two million women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and for most, it comes as a complete shock,” she said. “Only 5 to 10% of breast cancer cases are considered hereditary, and breast density alone is a very weak predictor of risk.”

Clairity Breast, the first FDA-authorized image-only AI breast cancer risk model, was trained on 421,499 mammograms from 27 facilities in Europe, South America and the U.S. Using mammograms both from women who developed cancer and women who did not develop cancer over the subsequent five years helped the AI model to learn the patterns and differences in breast tissue that predict cancer risk. The model was calibrated on an independent test set using a deep convolutional neural network to generate five-year risk probabilities.

“The model is able to detect changes in the breast tissue that the human eye can’t see,” Dr. Lehman said. “This is a job that radiologists just can’t perform. It’s a separate task from detection and diagnosis, and it will open a whole new field of medicine, leveraging the power of AI and untapped information in the image.”

The model was applied to a study group of 236,422 bilateral 2D screening mammograms from five U.S. sites and 8,810 from one European site. The mammograms were acquired between 2011 and 2017. Radiologist-reported breast density (dense versus not dense) and five-year cancer outcomes were extracted from medical records and tumor registries, respectively. AI-predicted risks were categorized using National Comprehensive Cancer Network thresholds: average (less than 1.7%), intermediate (1.7-3.0%) and high (greater than 3.0%).

The researchers compared the risk categories using statistical models that account for follow-up time and censoring.

Accounting for breast density, women in the high-risk AI group had more than a fourfold higher cancer incidence than women in the average-risk group (5.9% vs. 1.3%). By contrast, breast density alone showed only modest separation (3.2% for dense vs. 2.7% for non-dense).

“The results of this large-scale analysis demonstrate that AI risk models provide far stronger and more precise risk stratification for five-year cancer prediction than breast density alone,” said first author and presenter Christiane Kuhl, M.D., Ph.D., director, Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at University Hospital RWTH Aachen, in Germany. “Our findings support the use of image-only AI as a complement to traditional markers supporting a more personalized approach to screening.”

The American Cancer Society currently recommends that women at average risk have the option to start annual breast cancer screening with mammography at age 40. However, women under 40 are the fastest-growing group being diagnosed with breast cancer and advanced disease.

“An AI image-based risk score can help us identify high-risk women more accurately than traditional methods and determine who may need screening at an earlier age,” Dr. Lehman said. “We already screen some women in their 30s when they are clearly at high risk based on family history or genetics. In the future, a baseline mammogram at 30 could allow women with a high image-based risk score to join that earlier, more effective screening pathway.”

Breast density legislation enacted in 32 states requires healthcare providers to inform women undergoing a screening mammogram of their breast density.

“We’d like to see women given information on their breast density and their AI image-based risk score,” Dr. Lehman said. “We can do better than just looking at a mammogram and saying, ‘It is dense or not dense’ to inform women of their risk.”

The innovative heat reuse initiative will channel excess heat from DEN01 into district heating for Danish households.

BALLERUP, Denmark, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — atNorth, the leading Nordic high-density colocation and built-to-suit datacenter provider, has finalized its agreement with Vestforbrænding, Denmark’s largest waste-to-energy company, to use excess heat from atNorth’s DEN01 data center campus within Vestforbrænding’s district heating network.  

DEN01, located in Ballerup, Greater Copenhagen, is a 22.5MW metro site that is due to be operational in Q1 2026. The collaboration with Vestforbrænding will enable warm water, that is a biproduct of energy efficient Direct Liquid Cooling technology, to be used by the district heating network to heat over 8000 homes in the local area from 2028. The process will lower the carbon footprint of the data center and Vestforbrænding by reducing the amount of energy needed to provide local central heating.

Denmark has been an early leader in decarbonization and in 2022 the government announced a target to become net zero by 2045, aiming for a 110% reduction in emissions by 2050. The Danish government is actively phasing out the use of coal in the district heating sector and is supportive of heat recycling initiatives that align to its circular economy principles. The 12-month Agreement gives First Graphene global exclusivity over development and sale of the PureGRAPH® containing product, with Halocell receiving a 10% royalty on sales as well as using the product in manufacturing its commercially available perovskite solar cells (“PSC”).

This is an addition to the existing Joint Development Agreement and Cooperative Research Centre Project (CRC-P) Partners Agreement reached in June 2022 and August 2023 respectively.

Market-ready product with multiple sector applications

Under the pre-existing CRC-P Partners Agreement, FGR and Halocell have successfully investigated and introduced graphene to carbon paste with a focus on fine tuning formulation, concentrations, components and syntheses.

The paste is already used in the manufacture of Halocell’s PSCs, which has doubled PSC efficiency to more than 30% and dramatically reduced production costs via roll-to-roll (“R2R”) deposition technology producing thin-film perovskites.

It is preferred over traditional conductors such as gold because of significant material and production cost reductions while maintaining high performance output and enhancing robustness.

Halocell’s indoor PSCs are already sold in the global market for use in small electronic devices due to their ability to achieve high power conversion efficiency in low light conditions.

There are 44 additional devices identified across the satellite, aerospace, IoT, electronics and renewable energy sectors that could benefit from PSC technology (refer ASX announcement 27 August 2025).

Halocell, in partnership with V-Tol Aerospace and Li-S (ASX:LIS), is already developing a lightweight power solution including next generation solar and batteries to significantly increase the flight duration of electric powered drones.

The graphene-based carbon paste can also be applied to a range of conductive applications such as heating systems and sensors, ceramic coatings, electrodes and electrochemical mixes.

Manufacturing sample graphene enhanced carbon paste material at First Graphene’s Henderson facility is planned to commence within the next month.

This year’s summit, held under the theme “Bridge, Business, Beyond,” featured U.S. President Donald Trump delivering the opening keynote and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang closing the summit, drawing significant global attention. Many of the world’s top 50 publicly traded companies by market capitalization participated, including Jane Fraser, CEO of Citigroup; Matt Garman, CEO of AWS; and Joaquin Duato, CEO of Johnson & Johnson. Their combined market capitalization totals approximately USD 20 trillion.

The summit drew a record 2,224 participants, the highest number in its history. This included 1,852 business leaders from 713 global companies — approximately 200 more than last year’s event in Peru and around 460 more than the U.S. summit two years ago. In addition, 372 representatives from government and public-sector organizations participated. 12 APEC member economy leaders took the stage to share their vision for the future of global economic cooperation.

‘K-APEC Model’ Debuts: Integrating the economy, technology, culture, and business

This year’s summit was more than a discussion venue; it showcased the K-APEC Model and served as a comprehensive business platform, integrating technology, culture, and business.

Outside the official sessions, approximately 25,420 participants (cumulative) attended side programs. Among them, 11,145 visited the K-Tech Showcase, an exhibition of technologies from leading global companies, while 2,270 attended the Future Tech Forum, which focused on AI, shipbuilding, defense, retail, digital assets, and future energy.

The Wine & Liquor Fair attracted 9,362 participants and drew strong on-site enthusiasm. Attendees experienced member economies’ cultures through their signature beverages, with government delegations personally introducing their national drinks. In addition, 1,673 people took part in the Diamond Sponsor Networking, while cultural programs such as the Art Exhibition and Beauty & Wellness Program attracted a total of around 1,000 participants.

The economic spillover effects were also significant. According to an analysis by KCCI and Deloitte, the summit generated an estimated 7.4 trillion Korean won in economic impact and created about 22,000 jobs.

The increase in visitors to Gyeongju following the summit was also remarkable. According to Gyeongju City and the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of visitors to Gyeongju during the month surrounding the APEC period (October 1 to November 4) reached 5,896,309, a 22.8% rise from 4,798,838 during the same period last year. Foreign visitors totaled 206,602, up 35.6% from 152,363 the previous year.

A total of 17,952 media reports covered the event, including 11,772 domestic and 6,180 international stories. Global media outlets praised the summit, describing it as “the most dynamic and innovative CEO Summit in APEC history” and highlighting that “Korea has emerged as a global hub for economic cooperation based on advanced technology.”

Social media responses were equally strong. From October 27 to November 2, mentions of the APEC CEO Summit across major platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook exceeded 300,000, with over 1.1 billion impressions and around 4 million engagements (likes, comments, shares, etc.). These statistics were analyzed by global media monitoring platforms Meltwater and Tubular.

The high level of attention across both traditional media and social platforms demonstrates that the APEC CEO Summit has established itself as a substantial discussion platform that delivers practical outcomes, rather than remaining a ceremonial international event. The summit has been recognized as a starting point for developing actionable cooperative agendas and projects that go beyond a one-off gathering.

In his closing remarks on October 31, KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won stated, “At the APEC CEO Summit Korea 2025 in Gyeongju, global leaders gathered to explore directions for solidarity, cooperation and innovation, and to develop practical solutions. Since APEC is not just a forum for discussion but a platform for action, we will follow through with linked projects to help strengthen global economic resilience and inclusivity, and to promote shared prosperity among member economies.”

Chey presented the 3C action framework as a practical response to the summit’s 3B theme, urging business leaders to take the lead in implementation.

Following the APEC CEO Summit, participating companies are discussing follow-up collaborations including joint investments in global AI data centers, restructuring semiconductor supply chains and strengthening technology partnerships, proposing new technology demonstration models using Korea as a global testbed, and establishing global CEO-linked investment and innovation channels.
