When recognition changes everything

In healthcare, some of the most important moments are the quiet ones—the ones where a condition could be spotted early but isn’t. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) rarely knocks on the door with symptoms. It creeps in quietly, often for years, until the damage is done. Because CKD is usually asymptomatic, recognition depends on proactive steps rather than visible signs. – Coding gaps, low awareness, and competing priorities mean opportunities can slip through the cracks. And when those moments are missed, systems lose the chance to act sooner and more equitably.

For the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, these missed moments matter. They shape how resources are used, how confident clinicians feel, and how equity is delivered across communities. And for patients, they define whether care starts early—or much later.

Why equity is at the heart of this story

CKD doesn’t affect everyone equally. It’s more common in communities already facing health inequalities—in particular areas with socioeconomic challenges and ethnic diversity. That’s why Hampshire and Isle of Wight (HIOW) and North East and North Cumbria (NENC) Integrated Care Boards (ICB) wanted to do something different: to redesign recognition so no early sign goes unnoticed.

In HIOW, the geography encompasses rural market towns, coastal areas including the Isle of Wight, and vibrant and multicultural cities such as Portsmouth and Southampton. For many, navigating the health system can be complex—especially when language, transport, or digital access are barriers. In some areas, shift work or caring responsibilities delay vital tests. For others, cultural norms or limited internet access make it harder to get health information or book appointments.

Nadia Malik and William Burlace

In the NENC, the Integrated Care System spans one of the largest geographical regions in England, covering urban centers alongside coastal, rural, and post-industrial communities. Strong local identities and community resilience sit alongside significant deprivation and health challenges. Here, data, research, and local insight are being used to deliver fairer outcomes and create opportunities for every community to flourish.

SPOT CKD: Co-creating a new approach

Together with Boehringer Ingelheim, NHS teams in these regions launched SPOT CKD—Screening, Prevention, Outreach, and Treatment for Health Equity. This isn’t a pilot, but a joint working model built on shared ownership. NHS teams set local priorities, Boehringer and the NHS provide the enablers—data insights, training and coordination—and communities shape solutions based on lived experience. Healthcare Innovators across the NHS, Boehringer and partner organisations then bring these plans to life through new technologies and integrated pathways linking primary care with renal specialist services.

Inclusion and belonging extend to our communities

Across our business, volunteerism is one of the ways our teams turn our values into action and drive meaningful progress through employee engagement and community involvement.

Around the world, our people contribute their time, skills, and energy through hands‑on volunteering, mentorship, local partnerships, and community‑led initiatives – helping strengthen the communities where we operate.

In our 2025 Corporate Sustainability Report, we highlight a range of volunteer efforts taking place globally. In this article, we take a closer look at one region in particular: Asia Pacific – where our teams led some of our most impactful community initiatives in 2025.

Spotlight on progress: Community impact across APAC

In 2025, our APAC region led the way in community engagement, driven by the passion and dedication of teams across China and Malaysia. Together, they delivered meaningful impact – supporting education, health, sustainability, and inclusion initiatives that strengthen communities and create lasting change.

In China, our teams were recognized for the fourth consecutive year with two prestigious Sustainable Responsibility awards for the Act for A Better Future volunteer campaign. Since 2022, this program has engaged more than 4,000 employees across over 20 initiatives, supporting education, health, and environmental protection- particularly for migrant and rural children. These efforts reflect a deep commitment to creating opportunity where it’s needed most.

In Malaysia, more than 200 volunteers delivered high‑impact initiatives across education, health, sustainability, and inclusion. Their efforts contributed significantly to APAC’s 7,990 volunteer hours in 2025 and earned recognition from AMCHAM CARES – underscoring the power of collective action and community partnership.

In Kuala Lumpur, creativity and sustainability came together at the Hats Off to a Greener Future Annual Dinner. Our volunteers participated in the One World, One Rhythm Sustainability Musical Competition, where teams transformed environmental consciousness into art. From eco-inspired hats crafted from recycled materials to beautifully choreographed dances showcasing cultural storytelling, our people demonstrated their commitment to celebrating a more sustainable future.

Across APAC, these initiatives demonstrate how purpose‑driven volunteerism strengthens communities while reinforcing our culture of care. By empowering our people to take action locally, we are helping advance a more sustainable future across the communities where we live and work.

  • Bedari Collective contribution will support World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) work on sustainable finance, including the development of Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiatives by providing upfront funding to support new global conservation projects.
  • Enduring Earth applies the PFP model to protect land, ocean and freshwater ecosystems in partnership with governments, Indigenous peoples, communities, local partners, and funders with the goal of supporting conservation of one billion hectares by 2030.
  • The commitment is the first significant investment by Bedari Collective’s newly expanded platform which seeks to enable a next generation of regenerative infrastructure that aligns human progress with planetary health.

NEW YORK, September 17, 2026 /3BL/ – Bedari Collective, an impact platform focused on regenerative infrastructure, and World Wildlife Fund, today announced a $25 million commitment from Bedari Collective to support WWF’s work on long-term sustainable finance through PFP initiatives. The catalytic grant will support WWF’s engagement in Enduring Earth, which is working to expand land, ocean and freshwater conservation around the world.

PFP is an approach that secures funding, policy changes and legal requirements for conservation success in a single agreement so that conservation areas are well-managed, sustainably financed, and benefit the communities who depend on them for decades. Since its launch in 2020, Enduring Earth—a collaboration founded by The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, WWF, ZOMA LAB, with support from Bezos Earth Fund and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation—has worked with more than 200 local partners to durably finance and conserve more than 245 million hectares across nine PFP initiatives in Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Gabon, Mexico, Mongolia, and Namibia.

“Durable conservation takes funding that lasts, policies that hold, and communities in the lead,” said WWF-US President and CEO Carter Roberts. “That’s what the Project Finance for Permanence model delivers. Bedari Collective is backing this work at the start, when upfront capital is hardest to find and most consequential. Building on their support, we look forward to mobilizing $2 billion in public and private capital and $2 billion in government commitments to deliver needed resources to frontline communities and support the global 30×30 commitment.”

“Bedari Collective is committed to developing regenerative infrastructure that strengthens community growth and, at the same time, protects critical ecosystems and supports essential biodiversity. We deploy knowledge, networks and capital into long-term infrastructure and conservation solutions that are community-led, and PFPs apply that approach at scale,” said Matt Harris, Founder of Bedari Collective and a Co-Founder of Global Infrastructure Partners. “We are proud to partner with World Wildlife Fund and Enduring Earth to bring this innovative model to new markets across the globe and advance their work with Indigenous and local communities to achieve durable conservation outcomes.”

Bedari Collective and WWF intend for this commitment to anchor deeper collaboration on shared priorities pursuant to a memorandum of understanding signed in April 2026. WWF will provide technical support to Bedari Collective’s ecosystem-scale infrastructure and conservation initiative with the Government of Rwanda, and the parties are developing a regenerative infrastructure joint venture that supports both built and natural infrastructure.
