FALLS CHURCH, Va., July 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA) is spearheading a comprehensive initiative to develop a Product Category Rule (PCR), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS). In an unprecedented show of unity, 100% of American EIFS manufacturers — EIMA members and non-members alike — are participating in the effort, underscoring the industry’s shared commitment to sustainability, transparency, and high-performance construction.

Importantly, this PCR will cover all North America, with collaboration and funding support from the EIFS Council of Canada and ADEX Systems, Inc., a Canadian EIFS manufacturer and EIMA Board member.

Participating US EIFS manufacturers include: Dryvit Systems (a brand of Tremco CPG), Master Wall, Inc., Sika USA (Parex USA and Senergy brands), Sto Corp., Decoplast, Energex Wall Systems, Facades Xi, Omega Products International, Total Wall, Inc., and Ultrakote Products.

To ensure scientific rigor and third-party credibility, EIMA has partnered with Smart EPD, a respected program operator for environmental product declarations, and TrueNorth Collective, an expert consultancy in life cycle assessment and sustainability reporting.

The effort includes development of a Product Category Rule (PCR)—a set of rules and guidelines that ensure consistent reporting across similar products—informed by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to scientifically evaluate the environmental impacts of EIFS over its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. These efforts will culminate in an industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)—a third-party verified document that communicates transparent, comparable data on the environmental performance of EIFS products.

“This unified effort by the EIFS manufacturing community reflects our shared commitment to sustainable building practices,” said EIMA President Jose Berlingeri, Sto Corp.. “By developing a PCR, LCA, and EPD specifically for EIFS, we are equipping architects and specifiers with the credible data they need to make informed, environmentally responsible decisions.”

“By having this level of industry participation from the outset, the EIFS industry will have a complete set of data necessary for a robust, best-in-class, LCA and PCR,” said Jeff Zeman, Principal of TrueNorth Collective.

“A robust PCR not only codifies the set of rules and methods used for LCAs and EPDS, but it will also stand up to scrutiny from architects, engineers and the sustainability community,” added Anna Lasso, CEO and Founder of Smart EPD.

The resulting documentation will support green building certification, guide product selection, and help demonstrate EIFS’s role in advancing energy efficiency and environmental performance in modern construction.

Smart EPD is inviting stakeholders to apply to participate in the development of the PCR for EIFS.

If you are interested in being considered to serve on this PCR committee, please complete and submit an application found at: https://forms.office.com/r/zvbbHQB0u5. Applications will be accepted until Friday August 8, 2025.

The EIFS Industry Members Association is the North American trade association that is devoted to the promotional, advocacy, technical and educational aspects of the EIFS industry. Founded in 1981, EIMA is comprised of leading manufacturers, associates, distributors, and contractors and is also a long-time ANSI-accredited standards developer. LONDON, July 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Today at the Google Cloud Summit London, Additive Catchments and Google Cloud announced a strategic collaboration to scale trusted, AI-powered infrastructure for river health in the UK. Their goal: to make high-integrity, real-time environmental data available across entire catchments, enabling better decision-making by regulators, utilities, investors, and more. LONDON, July 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Formula E and its Official Cloud Partner, Google Cloud, today announced a new initiative to make motorsport more accessible for blind and visually impaired fans through an innovative, AI-powered, audio race report.

Unveiled at the Google Cloud Summit in London by Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds, the project uses Google Cloud’s generative AI technology to create rich, descriptive audio summaries of every E-Prix race. The reports will provide fans with a dynamic recap that captures the excitement and key moments of the race, available on-demand shortly after the chequered flag.

The initiative was born from a Google Cloud Hackathon held at the 2024 London E-Prix. It is being developed in close partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to ensure the final product meets the needs of visually impaired users. Formula E and Google Cloud will work with the RNIB to conduct focus groups and user testing during the upcoming race weekends in Berlin and London, with a full rollout planned for Season 12.

Jeff Dodds, CEO, Formula E, said:
“At Formula E, we believe the thrill of electric racing should be accessible to everyone. This innovative collaboration with Google Cloud is a fantastic example of how technology can be used for good, creating a brand-new way for blind and visually impaired fans to experience the drama and emotion of our sport. By working closely with the RNIB, we are ensuring this innovation is truly inclusive and fit for purpose, so that no fan is left behind.”

John Abel, Managing Director, Specialised Software, Google Cloud, said:
“For too long, the visual nature of racing has been a barrier for fans who are blind or visually impaired. Google Cloud’s AI technology will act as a digital storyteller, creating a vivid audio narrative that brings the speed, strategy, and excitement of Formula E to life. We are proud to work alongside a partner like Formula E that shares our passion for using innovation to break down barriers and connect people through shared experiences.”

Sonali Rai, RNIB’s Media Culture and Immersive Technology Lead said:
“Audio description transforms how blind and partially sighted motor sport fans can fully engage in enjoying the full racing spectacle – taking in the visceral sounds of cars on the track while feeling the passion of the crowd.

“RNIB has been working with Formula E and Google Cloud on this AI-powered podcast which promises to give a full picture of the race in an accessible and engaging way for blind and partially sighted racing fans. Formula E’s commitment to working directly with the blind and partially sighted community to develop this technology is exactly the right approach and sets a fantastic standard in inclusivity for other sports to follow and stay on track with new advances in innovation.”

How The Technology Works:

The audio report is created through a multi-stage process powered by Google Cloud’s AI platform Vertex AI:

  1. Transcription: Google’s Chirp model accurately transcribes live race commentary.
  2. Analysis and Generation: Google’s Gemini models then analyse the transcribed commentary alongside live timing data and other official race information. The audio report identifies key events – such as overtakes, incidents, and strategic pit stops – and generates a fact-based, engaging race summary.
  3. Audio Production: Finally, the text is converted into natural, expressive speech using advanced text-to-speech technology, creating a polished audio report ready for distribution.

The entire process is completed within minutes of the race’s conclusion. The reports will be available globally on Spotify and other popular audio platforms in more than 15 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, and Arabic.

OSLO, Norway, July 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Elkem ASA has been informed that the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment (KLD) has concluded that Norwegian silicon, ferrosilicon and manganese producers were unequally treated compared to European Union producers in the allocation of free emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) by the Norwegian authorities for the period 2021-2025. The case has been sent to the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) to be processed anew.

The Norwegian Environment Agency will re-evaluate the case to ensure that the allowance allocation process is based on the same interpretation of the EU regulations as that being applied by other EU countries.

Under the EU ETS, industrial installations considered to be at significant risk of carbon leakage receive free allowances to support their competitiveness. Carbon leakage refers to the situation that may occur if, for reasons of costs related to climate policies, businesses were to transfer production to other countries with lower emission constraints. This could lead to an increase in their total emissions. For the period 2021-2025, certain industrial installations in Norway, including Elkem’s five silicon products plants, were allocated free emission allowances at approximately 72 percent of the historical emissions, while EU counterparties received approximately 94 percent.

“Elkem’s complaint highlights the disparities in allowance allocations that have affected the competitiveness of Norwegian metal companies compared to their counterparts in other EU countries. The support from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment underscores the importance of fair and equitable treatment in the allocation of allowances, which is crucial for maintaining a level playing field in the industry,” says Inge A. Grubben-Strømnes, SVP Elkem Silicon Products.

Based on Elkem’s understanding, the letter from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment implies that Elkem will receive approximately 1.3 million additional free emission allowances for the period 2021-2025.

NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Yale School of Medicine (YSM) was awarded a $27.7 million grant from Aligning Research to Impact Autism (ARIA) to develop an interdisciplinary research project to investigate non-invasive functional communication methods through large-scale brain modeling in autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

“We are grateful to the ARIA initiative for its vision and generous support of this transformative work. It has the potential to change fundamentally how we treat children with severe neurodevelopmental disorders,” said Nancy J. Brown, MD, the Jean and David W. Wallace Dean of Yale School of Medicine. “It underscores the strength of partnership in driving innovative solutions and transforming lives.”

Led by Murat Günel, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, Sterling Professor of Neurosurgery, and professor of genetics and of neuroscience at YSM, the interdisciplinary research project aims to leverage state-of-the-art technologies and cross-departmental expertise to develop large brain models that will serve as the basis for personalized, circuit-based therapies.

ASD affects 1 in 36 children in the United States and 1 in 100 children worldwide, presenting with myriad challenges, including language and social communication difficulties, repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing issues. Autism often co-occurs with epilepsy, mood conditions, and sleep disturbance. The variability in symptoms and the intricate nature of the brain’s involvement make treating the co-features associated with autism particularly challenging. Current treatments focus on managing symptoms through behavioral therapy, medication, and educational support, but there remains an unmet need for more effective and personalized interventions.

Pioneering New Treatments
Yale seeks to address this treatment gap by identifying the brain circuits responsible for key ASD-related co-features and to modify those circuits non-invasively in real-time to benefit people with autism. The research will initially focus on identifying novel approaches to establish or improve verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as co-occurring conditions such as sleep disturbances and anxiety. By understanding the neural circuits responsible for these morbidities, Yale aims to develop non-invasive neuromodulation techniques to restore their function.

A key strength of this project is the integration of data from three distinct cohorts: individuals with ASD, patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, and those with Angelman Syndrome, a condition marked by severe speech and language impairments, sleep disturbances, and anxiety due to a single gene mutation. The study will collect noninvasive clinical and behavioral evaluations developed for use in multisite autism studies in parallel with advanced neural and imaging technologies. The inclusion of epilepsy patients, in particular, offers a significant advantage due to the collection of intracranial recordings during the course of epilepsy monitoring and treatment—an area of expertise for the Yale neurosurgical team. These recordings allow for a detailed examination of circuit-level functions, informing the understanding of autism in ways not otherwise possible.

“Our vision is to translate our understanding of brain circuitry into practical treatments that restore neurological function,” Günel explains. “This integrated approach will not only improve outcomes for individuals with autism but also pave the way for addressing other neurodevelopmental disorders.”

Big Data, Digital Twins, and AI
Central to the research initiative is the use of mathematical and computer algorithms to decode complex neural signals and create large brain models. By integrating patient data from imaging, intracranial EEG (electroencephalogram) recordings, and other sources, these models will represent virtual replicas of patients’ brains. Using these models, researchers can pinpoint precise neural targets for intervention. Continuously updated with patient data, these comprehensive simulations will provide deep insights and facilitate meaningful comparisons across individuals and groups, enhancing the precision of therapeutic interventions.

Günel explains, “Using advanced AI and machine learning techniques, we can create individualized brain models that simulate potential treatments, thereby refining our approaches before clinical application.”

A Fusion of Disciplines
The project brings together more than 30 individuals from many Yale departments, schools, and centers, including neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry, psychology, engineering, statistics and data science, applied mathematics, law, and digital ethics. This collaborative effort ensures that each aspect of autism—from neural circuitry to behavioral manifestations to ethics—is examined through multiple lenses.

The Yale Child Study Center, renowned for its work in child development and neurodevelopmental disorders, will play a central role in the clinical care of patients involved in the study. Advanced imaging techniques will be provided by the Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute and the Wu Tsai Institute, ensuring precise mapping of brain structures and functions. The School of Engineering & Applied Science’s expertise in computational modeling and AI will support large brain modeling aspects of the initiative. Lastly, Günel notes that a pivotal element of this initiative is the major collaboration with Yale New Haven Health, which ensures that clinical translational projects have the necessary infrastructure and support, facilitating seamless integration of research findings into clinical practice.

Brown emphasizes the significance of Yale’s collaborative spirit: “By bringing together experts and resources from across the university and collaborating with Yale New Haven Health System to make this work accessible to patients, we harness the power of interdisciplinary research to achieve breakthroughs that would not transpire in isolation.”
