The nonprofit organizations are transitioning from emergency response to long-term solutions as reduced government funding becomes the new reality

SEATTLE, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Life You Can Save, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting extreme poverty, and Founders Pledge, a global nonprofit empowering entrepreneurs to do the most possible good with their charitable giving, partnered to form the Rapid Response Fund when life-threatening foreign aid cuts were made earlier this year. Since launching the Fund on Feb. 17, 2025, the organizations have raised more than $13.1 million for high-impact, evidence-based charities addressing urgent health and global development needs.

While the Rapid Response Fund accepted its final donations on August 31, both organizations will continue raising money, but will transition funding strategies from emergency response to managing and monitoring the long-term effects of reduced government funding. The final grants raised from the Rapid Response Fund will be distributed by early October. In total, the fund awarded 13 grants to 11 partner charities and non-profit organizations, projected to save the lives of more than 4,700 children.

Additionally, the Rapid Response Fund’s partnership with Project Resource Optimization (PRO) introduced a joint funding initiative that raised $7.5M in donations and commitments.

“The Rapid Response Fund emphasized the importance of pairing evidence-based philanthropy with the ability to act quickly in moments of urgent need,” said Jessica La Mesa, Co-CEO of The Life You Can Save. “As we look to the future, we see an opportunity to build on this approach by advancing models of giving that are both highly effective and adaptable to global challenges. Our goal is to continue demonstrating how strategic philanthropy can maximize impact, transform lives and strengthen resilience for communities most in need.”

Both The Life You Can Save and Founders Pledge will continue the vital work of the Fund through other fundraising initiatives that continue to draw on their long-term expertise of evaluating and selecting high-impact organizations and giving opportunities, all while incorporating the learnings from the Rapid Response Fund.

The Life You Can Save will direct funders to its Maximize Your Impact Fund, ensuring donations go to organizations across all dimensions of poverty, guaranteeing the impact is meaningful, multidimensional and creating the greatest change. Recognizing that poverty is complex and interconnected, the fund invests in holistic solutions that break down barriers to well-being and advance human development. By pooling donor contributions, the Maximize Your Impact Fund supports a diverse portfolio of high-impact charities, creating opportunities for individuals and communities to thrive.

Additionally, Founders Pledge has launched a Global Health and Development (GHD) Catalytic Impact Fund, which directs resources toward opportunities where small investments generate outsized returns. Its first grant of $1.9 million, made jointly with the Rapid Response Fund, supports the Clinton Health Access Initiative(CHAI) in ten Sub-Saharan African countries affected by USAID cuts. By adding technical expertise to Ministries of Health, each dollar spent will influence hundreds of dollars in government spending, strengthen long-term health systems, and save more lives beyond the initial grant.

“We’re humbled to be the first recipient of Founders Pledge’s Catalytic Impact Fund and energized by what this catalytic investment means for our ability to support governments around the world save lives now and reimagine the future of global health,” said Neil Buddy Shaw, the Chief Executive Officer of CHAI. “In a moment of unprecedented funding cuts, this partnership allowed us to act quickly to protect critical health services while helping governments revise their new health budgets to stretch every dollar further. It’s more than emergency relief—it’s an investment in resilient health systems that can save lives now and in the future.”

“The lesson of the Rapid Response Fund is clear: a community of motivated donors can transform concern into rapid, coordinated action,” said Katrina Sill, Global Health and Development Lead at Founders Pledge. “This next chapter is about building resilient, transformational health and development systems that don’t just respond to crises, but prevent them.”

  • Automaker and its retailers join forces with the ASPCA® to provide grants, host adoption events, and celebrate the seventh annual National Make a Dog’s Day
  • Subaru has contributed over $70 million to national and local animal welfare organizations, supporting the rescue, transportation, adoption, and health of over 700,000 pets

CAMDEN, N.J., Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that as part of its Subaru Loves Pets® initiative, the automaker and more than 630 of its participating retailers will provide over $3.1 million in direct financial assistance to local animal shelters nationwide through grants* administered by the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). As the largest corporate donor to the ASPCA, Subaru aims to improve the lives of as many shelter pets as possible, helping to cover costs associated with adoption preparation, veterinary care, and other critical services.

Subaru has an unparalleled devotion as advocates for the unconditional love that pets bring into our lives.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 5.8 million animals entered shelters in the U.S. in 2024, which is why throughout October, Subaru retailers nationwide will host in-person adoption, microchipping, or other types of pet-focused events to help ensure that animals in need can find loving homes in their communities. Subaru will also donate $20 to the ASPCA with the purchase of select items from Subaru Parts Online in October, up to $10,000. This includes products such as Genuine Subaru Pet-Friendly Accessories.**

Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc.: “Subaru has an unparalleled devotion as advocates for the unconditional love that pets bring into our lives. By partnering with the ASPCA and our strong network of participating retailers, we are helping shelter animals find loving homes in communities nationwide and bringing attention to the actions that anyone can take to support the most vulnerable animals in need.”

To drive additional awareness and support for pets everywhere, Subaru will celebrate the seventh annual National Make a Dog’s Day on October 22nd. On this special holiday, created by Subaru, the automaker invites dog lovers everywhere to do something extra special for their canine companions and share these moments on social media using the #MakeADogsDay hashtag. This year, Subaru is encouraging all people to consider adopting, fostering, or otherwise supporting a shelter pet or a cherished “Underdog,” an older or disabled shelter dog.

Matt Bershadker, President and CEO, ASPCA: “Through this partnership with Subaru, tens of thousands of shelter animals will have a better chance of finding the loving homes they deserve. The Subaru Loves Pets initiative is more than a generous commitment—it’s a hands-on effort that connects people directly to animals in need, builds stronger bonds between local shelters and their communities, and ultimately changes countless lives for the better.”

Subaru will amplify its Subaru Loves Pets and National Make A Dog’s Day initiatives with an integrated ad campaign celebrating the original pack of “Underdogs” and sharing an inspiring new message. The automaker’s new 30-second spot, The First Thing You Notice, will be featured on October 22 as an “Isopod” feature on NBC’s TODAY Show and will air across streaming and digital platforms, including Peacock, Hulu, and Roku, throughout October. The campaign will extend across Subaru’s owned social channels and integrated marketing efforts, including influencer partnerships on Meta and TikTok, with the spot available on YouTube/Subaru.

Subaru is proud of its history of supporting pets in need, with the Subaru Loves Pets initiative playing an important role ever since the program’s inception. Since 2008, Subaru has contributed over $70 million to national and local animal welfare organizations, supporting the rescue, transportation, adoption, and health of over 700,000 pets.

To learn more about the Subaru Love Pets initiative, visit www.subaru.com/pets and follow #SubaruLovesPets and #MakeADogsDay.

*Disclaimer: The ASPCA will administer funding to the partner through a grant on behalf of the retailer prior to October, so the shelter can use the funding throughout the month of October in honor of Subaru Loves Pets.

**Disclaimer: Maximum donation of $10,000. Donations apply to orders placed from 12:01 AM EDT Wednesday, October 1, 2025, through 11:59 PM EDT Friday, October 31, 2025, through participating retailers’ Subaru Parts Online websites.

“For years, BriarPatch has been committed to sustainability, and expanding EV charging infrastructure at our store is another way we are supporting a cleaner future for our community,” said Sasha Scott, Sustainability Coordinator at BriarPatch Food Co-op. “By partnering with Skycharger, we are ensuring that both local EV drivers and those passing through have reliable access to fast charging, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

The project was fully funded by Skycharger, with additional support from a CALeVIP grant funded by the California Energy Commission and administered by the Center for Sustainable Energy.

Skycharger, which develops, owns and operates EV charging infrastructure, sees this expansion as part of a broader effort to meet increasing demand for reliable public charging.

“We are proud to work with BriarPatch to enhance EV charging access in Nevada County,” said Johannes Copeland, Chief Operating Officer at Skycharger. “This expansion not only increases charging speed and availability but also helps accelerate the transition to electric mobility. BriarPatch’s leadership in sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission to build a cleaner transportation ecosystem.”

The new chargers integrate with existing EV charging networks via roaming, ensuring a seamless user experience. Drivers will also have the option to pay via tap-to-pay credit cards, electronic wallets like Apple Pay, or via the Monta App.

The project was constructed by CBR Group, a general contracting firm specializing in commercial and infrastructure projects.

“This is our first collaboration with CBR Group, and they have been an invaluable partner in bringing this project to completion,” said Copeland. “Their flexibility and expertise ensured a smooth development process, even as project requirements evolved.”

Kempower
, the provider of the charging hardware, specializes in durable and scalable EV fast-charging solutions. The site’s Power Cabinet and Satellite dispenser system dynamically distributes power, allowing all eight new ports to charge simultaneously at 150 kW. The system also offers a peak output of 320 kW when fewer vehicles are connected.

“We’re proud to support this milestone project with our dynamic fast-charging technology, ensuring drivers in Grass Valley have access to a reliable, high-performance charging experience,” said Monil Malhotra, President of Kempower North America.

With construction now complete, the chargers are fully operational and available for public use.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the commissioning of the expanded EV charging station at BriarPatch’s Grass Valley location. The brief event will take place near the new chargers, located on the southwest side of the main parking lot at 290 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley, CA.

American Lung Association urges parents to act now to protect babies this fall and winter

CHICAGO, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — As respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season approaches, the American Lung Association is spotlighting new data that show a dramatic decrease in RSV-related hospitalizations among infants, thanks to new ways to help prevent babies from developing severe illness from the virus.

RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the United States. Though RSV is a common virus that infects nearly all children by age 2, it can cause severe and life-threatening complications. Each year, up to 80,000 children under 5 are hospitalized due to the virus. Infants under 8 months old and those with underlying conditions are at highest risk. Fortunately, there are safe and proven-effective methods to dramatically reduce severe illness for all infants under 8 months who are at the greatest risk for serious illness from RSV.

To protect against severe RSV illness in babies, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends:

  • An RSV preventive antibody given in October through March to provide short-term (at least 5 months) immune protection for all infants younger than 8 months old and born during or entering their first RSV season, and young children between 8 and 19 months at increased risk for severe RSV symptoms, including children with chronic lung disease or who were born prematurely.
  • An RSV vaccination given during weeks 32 through 36 weeks of pregnancy in September through January. Protection lasts about six months after birth.

“During the 2024–2025 RSV season, which was the first with widespread availability of preventive antibody protection and maternal RSV vaccination, infant hospitalization rates dropped sharply. We finally have data that prove what we’ve long hoped for: these RSV preventive options are working,” said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “The bottom line is that this means fewer babies struggling to breathe in emergency rooms and fewer parents facing the trauma of a hospital stay.”

A CDC analysis of RSV hospitalization rates among two surveillance groups from October 2024 through February 2025, found hospitalization rates 45% and 52% lower for infants 0-2 months during peak RSV season (December through February) and 28% and 43% lower for those 0-7 months old, compared to pre-pandemic (2018) rates. Of children hospitalized due to RSV, 75% were born at full-term with no underlying conditions. Since 60% of eligible infants are born before the RSV season, October and November are important months for families to connect with their healthcare providers to discuss prevention. Expectant parents should discuss RSV prevention options through March with their healthcare team.

In addition to medical protection, everyday hygiene practices are important to help reduce the spread of RSV. Parents and caregivers should:

  • Wash hands frequently;
  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals;
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces;
  • Stay home when sick; and
  • Avoid sharing bottles, pacifiers or toys.

This fall, the American Lung Association is partnering with Sanofi to launch a national campaign to raise awareness of RSV prevention, particularly among expectant parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers. The campaign focuses on recognizing RSV symptoms, understanding prevention options and encouraging proactive conversations with healthcare providers.
