Senior DEI Manager Julie Lewis is a passionate advocate for disability inclusion and leads the execution of our firm’s disability inclusion strategy. Her life has been shaped by having family members who are impacted by disability—two sons and a brother, each of whom has numerous gifts to offer the world. Julie shares her journey of creating access and opportunity for all.

As a core part of our firm’s global DEI strategy, we are committed to better supporting associates with and caregivers of individuals with chronic conditions. How does this differ around the world?

According to the World Health Organization, about 16% of the world’s population experiences significant disability. While disability transcends geography, there are nuances in terms of how different communities think about disability. There are also differences in how those with disabilities access support and accommodations or adjustments. What is often similar is that the possibilities and promise of these individuals are not always fully considered because of their disabilities. This is particularly true for my sons and brother.

At T. Rowe Price, associates with disabilities or chronic conditions can request workplace accommodations or adjustments that are intended to provide them with the access they need to effectively perform their role. For example, an adjustment or accommodation could include a technical intervention such as closed captioning or a screen reader. Alternatively, it might include something more practical like changing an associate’s seat or providing instructions in writing versus verbally.

We formed our disability-focused business resource group (BRG), THRIVE @ T. Rowe Price, globally in 2023. What did that process look like?

We formed a discovery group of interested and invested associates representing all three regions (APAC, EMEA, and North America). It was important to have associates who have disabilities as a part of this process. Over the course of about eight weeks, we mapped out the plan for this new BRG and drafted a charter. It was a collaborative process where we asked members to share their experiences and observations. It was not easy work, but this group was committed and approached the process in a thoughtful and intentional way. We also had to name our BRG. While there were many contenders, THRIVE was the standout. It’s a strong, evocative word that reflects what we hope the experience will be for our associates who have disabilities and chronic conditions. We hope T. Rowe Price will be a place where they can thrive in every sense.

When we think about inclusive language about the disability community, we often talk about person-first language. Can you talk about that? 

When it comes to person-first/identity-first language, there is no single right answer. It’s the difference between saying someone is an “autistic person” or a “person with autism. ”An autistic self-advocate I know explained the preference to me this way: Autism is a central part of who they are as a person; it is not something that can be separated from them. We can think about it in terms of other descriptors. If a person is six feet tall, we would not refer to them as a “person with great height.” We would simply call them tall. Height is a part of who they are, but it doesn’t define them.

Many self-advocates within the disability community prefer person-first language. Stigma and dehumanizing language have historically been used to describe members of this community. To push back against that history, there is generally a preference for person-first language, person with a disability.

Independent of individual preferences, we should start thinking of disability as part of the human experience. It’s often said that someone with Lupus “suffers from Lupus.” Lupus is no walk in the park, to be sure, but that person has a life that involves more than that “suffering.” The same is true of someone who uses a wheelchair for mobility. You can argue that rather than being “confined to a wheelchair,” a wheelchair provides them with access to the world around them. References that are limiting and negative are problematic.

What does allyship look like to this community?

The best answer would come from a member of the disability community. As an ally, I try to learn and listen. I don’t think you can really take effective actions without being knowledgeable about what is helpful and what is not.

But at our recent THRIVE signature event for NDEAM, our speaker Dr. Zosia Zaks shared his “Five C’s” for greater inclusion for disabled people. Dr. Zaks is himself an autistic self-advocate, so I think his perspective is helpful here. His five Cs are Care, Consideration, Comfort, Connection, and Challenge. Care is about really thinking about how to help an individual with a disability take care of themselves so they can do well in the workplace. Consideration connects to what things will help a person do their best. Comfort – what does this person need to feel comfortable, so they are ready to work. Connection – what is the best way for this person to communicate and be connected in the workplace. Finally, Challenge relates to how we can ensure we are being inclusive of this individual in our workplace. I think these are great steps to consider as allies.

Fast Company this week announced its sixth annual Best Workplaces for Innovators list, honoring organizations and businesses that demonstrate an inspiring commitment to encourage and develop innovation at all levels. The tabletop exercise had everyone in the room abuzz with activity. A major disaster was about to hit the airport in Suriname. Exercise participants included representatives from government agencies, relief organizations, and corporations across the Latin America and Caribbean region. They scrambled about, learning on the go all the preparations that needed to be in place to make the airport as resilient as possible.

Success! The airport was saved. Keeping airports open is key to enabling relief agencies to respond to the disaster, bringing in lifesaving medicines, materials, and equipment. An airport’s resilience also ensures that commerce can continue.

Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA), an international aid nonprofit, developed and facilitated the resiliency training. The program is called C-PReP, which stands for Community and Port Resiliency Program.

The program has proved so powerful and effective across the Latin America and Caribbean region that it has become a leader in resiliency training and programming. It has also showcased OAA’s leadership in this space and been a major contributing factor to the establishment of a new centre for training that will advance resiliency training. 

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) just signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OAA and Florida International University. This created an official affiliation between the three organizations and established CIFAL Miami. CIFAL, which stands for Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders (International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders), is part of the CIFAL Global Network (CGN), overseen by UNITAR.

Moving forward, OAA, in close coordination with Florida International University, will provide C-PReP training as part of the UN network of affiliated training centres.

The establishment of CIFAL Miami was recently celebrated in Miami at Florida International University. The three officials who ceremonially signed the MOU at the event were Dr Kenneth Jessell, President, FIU; Mr Alex Mejia, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Inclusion and Head of the CIFAL Global Network; and Mr Teo Babun, Executive Director, OAA. OAA’s Senior Program Director, Ms. Maricarmen Estrada, will also serve as the Director of CIFAL Miami

Nearly 15 years ago, FedEx began sponsoring C-PReP. Representatives from the company attended the signing event. The program aligns well with the company’s Delivering for Good philanthropic focus area, and it fits strategically, as resilient airports allow FedEx to keep commerce flowing.

Gildan is pleased to share that it has donated a total of US$200,000 worth of apparel to support those affected by Hurricane Helene.

“Gildan has a strong presence in North Carolina and South Carolina, with nine of our facilities located in the region,” says Chuck Ward, President, Sales, Marketing, and Distribution. “With our longstanding history of supporting our local communities, it was important for us to assist with the recovery efforts in the aftermath of the hurricane and provide much-needed aid for our neighbors in the Carolinas.”

Shortly after Hurricane Helene hit, Gildan’s locations in North and South Carolina provided US$100,000 worth of apparel to be distributed to those impacted by the storm. Employees also spearheaded grassroots efforts to collect and deliver essential items like water, diapers, and non-perishable food.

Gildan will be donating an additional US$100,000 worth of t-shirts to the upcoming Concert for Carolina, a benefit concert headlined by Eric Church and Luke Combs, which aims to raise funds for five nonprofit organizations working directly with residents in western North Carolina. T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event and all additional funds from their sale will directly contribute to essential relief efforts, providing vital assistance to families and individuals.

Our work to reduce the effects of climate change aims to support the health of those we serve and builds resilience in our operations. We continue to build readiness and further enhance our practices, in part based on our most recent climate scenario analysis in 2022, which helped us to reassess and understand our exposure to physical and economic risk drivers based on different climate change scenarios. The assessment reconfirmed the importance of our established areas of focus: protecting and enabling stable access to water, helping protect public water resources and maintaining operations during extreme weather events. The climate scenario analysis is intended to be updated to reflect ongoing operational changes.

Driving sustainable operations means continuously working for improvements and not just undertaking replacements. Doing so results in increased operational efficiencies, greater cost effectiveness, reduced GHG emissions and lower operating costs. In 2023, we advanced on our strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increasing renewable electricity use, enhancing operational efficiencies, upgrading equipment and expanding use of alternative fuels.

In 2023, we expanded the Ireland renewable electricity contract to include the Little Island facility beginning January 2024; this change resulted in all Ireland manufacturing sites now buying 100% renewable electricity. For the Little Island site, this change will reduce their GHG emissions by over 50%.

Our GHG Emissions Reduction Targets*

Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2020 base year.**

Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities and upstream transportation and distribution by 25% by 2030 from a 2020 base year.

Increasing the Use of Renewable Energy

Taking advantage of cost-effective renewable electricity is a key component of our work to make progress on our GHG-reduction goals. With a global operating footprint, where the supply of renewable electricity and low-carbon fuels varies, we apply different approaches in different geographies.

Renewable energy sources like solar, wind and agricultural biomass are being used throughout the Viatris operations network.

At our injectable facility in Hosur, India, the continued use of renewable energy and low-carbon intensity fuel including liquid petroleum gas (LPG) has resulted in a more than 40% reduction of scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, from a 2020 baseline. For our OSD facilities in Nashik and Indore, India, the use of agro-based bio-briquette-fired boilers for generating plant steam has reduced GHG emissions for those sites by more than 10%, also from a 2020 baseline.

We have implemented solar projects in Carole Park, Australia, which is helping to reduce GHG emissions for our electricity supply. The team installed a 99 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which uses energy from the sun to generate electricity. Five additional solar projects are planned with completion dates in 2024 and 2025.

Maximizing Equipment Efficiencies

Another continued priority has been maximizing efficiencies in our equipment. Across our API sites in 2023, more than 53 tons of refrigeration units were transitioned to zero ozone-depleting potential (ODP) refrigerants. We completed more than 20 system optimization projects to reduce energy and water consumption while delivering the required utility services and including implementing eight LED lighting projects.

Other projects around the world have included:

A new variable speed drive chiller in Galway, Ireland, providing a reduction in energy to generate the same amount of chilled waterHVAC chiller unit replacements in St. Albans, Vermont, which reduce energy useWaste water treatment plant blower upgrade at Little island, Ireland, providing greater energy efficiency by reducing energy required for treatment

These examples underscore our ongoing commitment to operational efficiency. When replacing end-of-life equipment, we prioritize installing more efficient units that not only reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions but also minimize operating costs.

Working to Reduce Emissions in Our Supply Chain

We are working to reduce carbon emissions across our supply chain. We work across all three of our freight transportation modes – road, ocean and air – to that end. Supply reliability and transport efficiency are primary objectives. We focus on full truck loads and double stacking of pallets where possible and partner with our freight partners to move from dedicated containers to sharing capacity with other companies to better utilize space across the industry. Full truck loads are considered the most efficient mode of transit.

The sourcing of transportation providers considers sustainability as a factor. Our key logistics suppliers have sustainability programs and are active in reducing GHG emissions.

To enable the shift to ocean and road freight – which is less GHG intensive than air – we have been building in more time for transportation into our processes, which hinges on good demand data and forecast planning. We have a rapid response system and have established a standard operating procedure to make ocean freight our standard mode.

In 2023, road and ocean represented 81% of all our transport. As timely access to medicine is the priority, there are exceptions when speed is of the essence and air transport may be required, representing 19% of our transport in 2023. As part of protecting supply reliability and reducing GHG emissions, we are looking into railway as another mode of transport. Further, we are looking at more sustainable packaging solutions to prepare our products for shipments.

Working with our partners to reduce GHG emissions is important as a significant amount of our GHG footprint comes from our partners’ operations. We are expanding our collaboration with partners in our sector to make progress on our scope 3 reduction target and collectively strive to reduce GHG emissions to protect human health and build more resilient supply chains.

In 2023, we began sharing information with our suppliers about our targets and their important role in supporting overall progress. We encouraged them to start measuring, tracking and disclosing their GHG footprint if they are not already doing so. These actions will start suppliers that are not already engaged in GHG reduction activities down the path toward developing their own GHG reduction programs and targets.

As a full member of the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI), we are working together to provide training and supplier engagement at scale to increase awareness across the collective supplier base on sustainable and responsible practices specific to pharmaceutical operations, including but not limited to reducing GHG emissions.

Introduction: Understanding local media’s reach during extreme weather events

Nielsen collaborated with Climate Central, a policy-neutral non-profit climate science organization, to assess the presence of accurate and informative climate reporting in local media to engage communities affected by extreme weather events.

Objective: Highlight local media’s role in driving climate change awareness 

According to the American Meteorological Society, local weather broadcasting is extremely effective in raising awareness about climate change. Climate Central collaborated with Nielsen to analyze local TV newscasts for climate change content and measure the audience reach associated with those broadcasts.

Challenge: Engaging local media stations to educate audiences about climate change

Despite increasing public concern about the link between climate change and extreme weather, only 28% of people in the U.S. say they hear about global warming in the media at least once a week. This suggests that media, including local media, frequently misses opportunities to increase public understanding and awareness of extreme weather and climate change.

Solution: Create a climate content metric for reports using audience reach and context analysis

Using Nielsen Local TV View (NLTV), Nielsen Grabix and the PPM Analysis Tool, Nielsen analyzed local television news and radio coverage in the top 50 U.S. DMAs related to four extreme weather events from 2022-2023 that could appropriately be connected with climate change. These events were Hurricane Ian, the Canadian wildfires, the Phoenix heat streak and Tropical Storm Hilary. The data was used to understand if, when and how coverage discussed the event in the context of climate change and was turned into a public report detailing viewership and content analysis of local TV news segments during those four notable extreme weather events.

Key findings:

Introduction: Understanding local media’s reach during extreme weather events

Nielsen collaborated with Climate Central, a policy-neutral non-profit climate science organization, to assess the presence of accurate and informative climate reporting in local media to engage communities affected by extreme weather events.

Objective: Highlight local media’s role in driving climate change awareness 

According to the American Meteorological Society, local weather broadcasting is extremely effective in raising awareness about climate change. Climate Central collaborated with Nielsen to analyze local TV newscasts for climate change content and measure the audience reach associated with those broadcasts.

Challenge: Engaging local media stations to educate audiences about climate change

Despite increasing public concern about the link between climate change and extreme weather, only 28% of people in the U.S. say they hear about global warming in the media at least once a week. This suggests that media, including local media, frequently misses opportunities to increase public understanding and awareness of extreme weather and climate change.

Solution: Create a climate content metric for reports using audience reach and context analysis

Using Nielsen Local TV View (NLTV), Nielsen Grabix and the PPM Analysis Tool, Nielsen analyzed local television news and radio coverage in the top 50 U.S. DMAs related to four extreme weather events from 2022-2023 that could appropriately be connected with climate change. These events were Hurricane Ian, the Canadian wildfires, the Phoenix heat streak and Tropical Storm Hilary. The data was used to understand if, when and how coverage discussed the event in the context of climate change and was turned into a public report detailing viewership and content analysis of local TV news segments during those four notable extreme weather events.
