October 29, 2024 /3BL/ – Bath & Body Works was recognized today as one of the best workplaces in America for career growth by the American Opportunity Index. The ranking measures how effective companies are at developing talent to drive business performance and advance individual careers. This is the second consecutive year Bath & Body Works has been recognized on the Index.

The American Opportunity Index is based on a comprehensive data analysis of the career trajectories of more than five million employees at 395 of America’s largest companies. The Index measures how well firms promote, pay, hire and retain their employees based on a five-year period. It is a joint project of the Burning Glass Institute, Harvard Business School’s Managing the Future of Work Project and the Schultz Family Foundation.

This year, Bath & Body Works ranked within the top 100 of the hiring and promotion Index categories. The hiring category measures how well companies hire people without degrees and with little experience. The promotion category ranks companies based on how well companies move their employees up and prepare them for future roles.

“Our associates are the foundation of our brand and its success,” says Deon Riley, Bath & Body Works’ Chief Human Resources Officer. “We strive to be a place where our associates want and choose to be every day, and that’s why we’re passionate about investing in their future — both professionally and personally. We are committed to providing valuable growth opportunities because we believe that when people feel valued and empowered to be successful, we can continue to grow as a stronger, smarter business.”

To further support its associates’ personal and professional growth, Bath & Body Works recently launched ‘Investing in you,’ a dynamic suite of programs and benefits which offers educational opportunities, tuition reimbursement options and financial stability resources to support career advancement and overall well-being. These benefits are available to all eligible U.S. associates across its stores, distribution centers and home office.

Southern Company

Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast on the evening of Thursday, September 26 as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing 140 mph winds and flooding rains as it moved north into Georgia.

The storm left catastrophic damage in its wake. For Georgia Power, Hurricane Helene was the most destructive storm in the company’s 140-year history.

Immediate and unwavering response

The Southern Company system sprang into action, demonstrating an unparalleled commitment to restoring service and aiding affected communities. By October 7, Georgia Power had restored service to 99% of the nearly 1.5 million customers impacted by the storm. This monumental effort involved more than 20,000 personnel, including teammates from Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and numerous other companies.

The damage was so severe in places that entire sections of the power grid had to be rebuilt. In total, Helene damaged or destroyed more than 8,300 power poles, 350 transmission structures and 4,500 transformers. More than 1,000 miles of power lines were restored.

Atlanta Gas Light (AGL), with support from teammates from Virginia Natural Gas, safely completed nearly 1,000 emergency leak calls across the final four days of September. That figure represents more calls than AGL received in the first four months of 2024 combined.

Coordinated and innovative efforts

Crews worked tirelessly around the clock, employing various methods to tackle the extensive damage. Teams on the ground navigated through fallen trees, broken power poles, flooded streets and downed lines, while aerial units and watercraft provided critical support. Specially equipped helicopters removed trees from transmission lines, drones assessed damage and made repairs from the air, and Marsh Masters navigated swamps and wetlands.

A heartfelt thank you to all who helped

Kim Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power, shared her reflections on the devastation and the company’s response:

“Hurricane Helene brought unprecedented damage to Georgia Power’s service areas, affecting countless communities, customers and our fellow teammates. The hard work of our employees and their unwavering commitment to our communities have been nothing short of inspiring, and I am confident we will emerge stronger and more united than ever.”

This was a historic storm that required an unprecedented response and coordination from many teams across Georgia. State leaders, including Gov. Brian Kemp, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and other state agencies, members of the Georgia Public Service Commission, as well as members of the Georgia legislature and its leadership, alongside local county commissioners, mayors, first responders, law enforcement and countless others continue to be incredible partners.

“For your kindness, compassion, and patience, thank you to our Georgia Power customers, communities, employees and partners. More than ever, I am proud to be a Georgian, proud to be a part of this team, and grateful to be a part of this community. Our road to recovery may be long, but we are here for Georgia, and we are here for you,” Greene added.

Preparation and industrywide support

In the days ahead of Helene’s landfall, Georgia Power’s advance planning and strategy were crucial to restoration efforts. The company pre-positioned 10,000 restoration workers, equipment and supplies near areas of anticipated impact, ensuring a rapid response once weather conditions allowed. Southern Company Executive Vice President of Operations and President and CEO of Southern Company Services, Stan Connally, also coordinated efforts between industry executives and government leaders to ensure an effective and efficient response.

Support for our communities

As Georgia continues to rebuild, Southern Company remains steadfast in its commitment to being a citizen wherever it serves.

The Southern Company, Georgia Power and Southern Company Gas charitable foundations collectively donated $3 million to aid Hurricane Helene relief efforts. These funds were allocated to local charities, the American Red Cross and community recovery efforts.

To further assist customers, Georgia Power suspended disconnections, waived eligible late fees and paused collection activities through Dec. 15, 2024. Atlanta Gas Light also suspended shutoffs for customers in affected areas.

“At Southern Company, our commitment to our communities is unwavering. In the face of Hurricane Helene’s unprecedented destruction, we stood together, offering our resources and support to those in need. We will continue to be a pillar of strength and resilience for all those affected,” said Chris Womack, Southern Company chairman, president and CEO.

As global supply chains continue to grapple with unprecedented challenges, the industry is being tested like never before.  DP World and Supply Chain Dive’s studioID survey-driven report “Supply Chains Prepping for a Greener, More Agile Future” underlined the nature of these concerns. The report indicated that market variability, limited capacities for rapid adaptation and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) all top the list of concerns for logistics leaders.

Disruptions from geopolitical tensions are exacerbating supply shortages and inflating costs, while extreme weather events, ongoing cyber threats, and labor shortages compound the crisis. Natural disasters, from wildfires to floods, have delayed shipments, while regulatory pressures around sustainability and compliance continue to mount. These obstacles have had devastating consequences, causing delays, price surges, and operational inefficiencies that threaten the stability of even the most robust supply chains.

With such a perfect storm of risks, the question remains: How can supply chains future-proof themselves against these escalating threats and ensure resilience in the face of relentless disruptions?

Leveraging AI and Emerging Technologies

Deploying generative AI (GenAI) effectively throughout supply chains is key. According to Gartner Inc., GenAI is projected to power 25% of logistics Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) by 2028, helping companies automate and optimize everything from demand forecasting to route planning. By leveraging GenAI and machine learning, supply chains can analyze massive data sets, predict disruptions, and enhance decision-making. As McKinsey notes, during the pandemic in China, Nike used predictive-demand analytics and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to reroute inventory and mitigate sales losses caused by store closures.

Building Resilience through Supplier Diversification

Diversifying supplier networks enables companies to mitigate risks from geopolitical conflicts, natural disasters, and supply shortages. The rise of nearshoring and friend-shoring, where businesses align with trusted partners in more stable regions, is helping to reduce reliance on single suppliers and vulnerable regions. For example, after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, Orkestra notes that Toyota revamped its supply chain, diversifying its suppliers to recover more quickly from subsequent disasters. According to a McKinsey survey, 60% of companies responding now report comprehensive visibility into their tier-one suppliers, though visibility into deeper tiers remains a challenge.

Strategic Inventory Management and Buffer Stocking

Strategic inventory management is another critical innovation that helps supply chains withstand disruptions. The just-in-time (JIT) model many companies relied on before the pandemic has proven vulnerable, leading to a shift toward maintaining buffer stock at critical points in the supply chain. For example, in response to tariffs and supply chain uncertainties, importers of semiconductors and electric vehicles have begun stocking up earlier to avoid shortages and manage costs more effectively (KPMG). While maintaining higher inventory levels can increase costs, it also ensures that companies can continue operations during supply shortages or price surges, helping to future-proof their supply chains against unexpected disruptions.

End-to-End Digital Integration for Real-Time Visibility

Digital integration across the entire supply chain is becoming essential for businesses aiming to improve operational efficiency and reduce risks. By connecting every link in the chain—from procurement to distribution—companies can achieve real-time visibility and anticipate disruptions before they escalate. Predictive analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors provide insights into potential delays, allowing businesses to optimize routes and inventory levels. For instance, companies that have embraced integrated systems can track shipments in real-time, adjusting to tariff changes or natural disasters without significant delays. Moreover, businesses that adopt digital technologies to improve visibility and dynamic operations, as Capgemini observes, experience faster response times and more efficient supply chain management.

Sustainability and Circular Supply Chains

With rising ESG pressures, supply chains are increasingly focusing on sustainability initiatives. According to Xeneta, in Q1 2024, the global Carbon Emissions Index hit an unprecedented 107.5 points, an increase of 15.2% from 2023. In response, companies are adopting low-carbon carriers and sustainable procurement practices. Companies are also investing in green and circular supply chains, ensuring that sustainability is embedded across the entire value chain. For instance, according to McKinsey, following the implementation of digital twins to optimize energy consumption and reduce waste over the past decade, Henkel has cut energy use by 40% and waste by 20%.

By embracing these innovative approaches—AI, supplier diversification, strategic inventory management, digital integration, and sustainability—companies can future-proof their supply chains against the complex and evolving challenges of the global market. Each of these strategies not only mitigates risks but also enhances operational efficiency, positioning businesses for long-term success in an increasingly volatile world.

Diversity and inclusion are not only core elements of Teva’s cultural DNA, they are also key in realizing our Pivot to Growth strategy.

Meet Dr. Eran Harary, SVP of Global Early Clinical Development, who explores the neuroscientific processes that empower people managers to harness inclusivity and diversity—ultimately driving innovation and elevating performance.

Diversity in the workplace is a characteristic of teams rather than individuals. More specifically, diversity comes from the collective composition of a team. This perspective highlights the value that each person brings to the table. The combination of unique perspectives is what drives innovation and performance. Studies show that inclusive teams can improve performance by as much as 30%, and diversity of thinking can enhance team innovation by up to 20%.

However, neuroscience research shows that humans naturally favor others similar to themselves because it’s cognitively easier. Working with people who are different from us and hold diverse perspectives requires more effort because more resources are needed to process different ideas and ways of thinking. This effort creates cognitive and emotional discomfort, which is a challenge to all of us.

When we work with people who are different from us, we naturally encounter contradictory views, which often leads to friction or conflict. This creates an experience of discomfort within the team. When this discomfort is managed effectively, it can drive higher performance and innovation. When we and our team members embrace discomfort, it opens them up to new ideas and perspectives. Homogenous groups may have a more pleasant working experience, but diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes.

“Inclusive leaders can leverage their teams’ potential for creativity, better decision-making, and finding new solutions to old or long-existing problems.”

On an individual level, the feeling of belonging, driven by inclusion, is linked to a 56% increase in job performance, a 50% drop in turnover risk, and a 75% reduction in sick days. Inclusion also positively impacts our wellbeing, reducing social anxiety, loneliness and depression, while improving mood and overall health.

Inclusive leaders can leverage their teams’ potential for creativity, better decision-making, and finding new solutions to old or long-existing problems. This not only enhances performance but also boosts innovation.

My team has prioritized creating an environment where every voice is heard and valued. By encouraging open dialogue and actively seeking out diverse perspectives, we have been able to tackle challenges from multiple angles and come up with innovative solutions.

Teva has recently launched a first-of-its-kind AI-based learning program to provide our managers with essential skills to leverage diversity. This will serve our Pivot to Growth strategy and will provide managers with valuable tools to create a more inclusive work environment and better leverage team diversity by utilizing the various experiences and perspectives within our teams to deliver exceptional results, leading to more exciting innovation.
