Fashion Summit (HK) is Asia’s leading sustainable fashion event funded by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of HKSAR and organized by the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA). It plays a vital role in the development of sustainable fashion, bringing together key players from the fashion industry, NGOs, media, decision-makers, and leaders from around the world to exchange insights on the latest sustainable fashion trends, technology, best practices, solutions, and opportunities.

This year’s theme was “Power Up Sustainable Fashion Business,” and featured a series of events, including a one-day international conference, fashion shows, exhibitions, and a pop-up shop. New Holland and CNH Bank will once again be supporters of the Festival of Happiness, a free cultural event that has a diverse agenda with integrated arts (dance, theater, performance), lectures and debate tables in Curitiba.

CNH’s support for socio-cultural projects is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the UN, including ensuring a healthy life and promoting well-being for all, at all ages and ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education, promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Also on the agenda is the International Congress of Happiness, the largest forum on the subject in Latin America, with renowned speakers from all over the world. In its seventh edition, the event promotes activities and discussions on the theme “happiness”, bringing topics such as sustainability, accessibility, well-being and self-knowledge and their impact on people’s quality of life.

“Our company is committed to collaborating with initiatives that promote themes related to health and well-being and sustainability in our city. We understand that this event is part of these discussions that enrich the agenda of integral health for a balanced and happy life”, says CNH’s Sustainability Manager for Latin America, Erika Michalick.

In late September and early October, the Southeastern U.S. endured two significant severe weather events: Hurricane Helene, followed quickly by Hurricane Milton. These back-to-back storms caused tremendous damage to the power infrastructure across multiple states. Hundreds of Leidos team members volunteered to help impacted utilities perform vital damage assessments to ensure that electric service was restored to these hard-hit communities.

Team members from across the Southeast were deployed. More than 280 power delivery staff responded, and many volunteered for field duty after both hurricanes.

The need to provide rapid restoration of service across impacted communities places enormous demands on utility operations. By putting Leidos experts in the field, we are able to improve the utility’s efficiency in damage assessment, thus expediting the recovery process for millions of customers. Leidos’ assessment teams worked 14-to-16-hour days in very challenging conditions, providing the local utilities with critical information needed to deploy resources – people and equipment – to the affected sites.  

Safety was key to this complex mission. Leidos’ field teams had to navigate blocked roadways, downed power lines, flooding, and a host of other obstacles. The deployments often lasted over a week.  And yet, our teams returned from the field safe and unhurt – a testament to the robust practices that are part of the Leidos safety culture. 

Members of the Leidos team showed their commitment through personal sacrifice, leaving their homes and families for days and weeks to serve our clients and our communities. Some members from our team even left their homes to travel for storm support ahead of landfall even though they lived in the direct path of the storm.

Severe weather events, whether hurricanes or destructive storms, can be truly devastating to the communities in the path of the storm. The utilities that Leidos serves have confidence in our ability to quickly deploy assistance when and where they need it.  Promises made, promises kept: the Leidos power teams delivered on that promise.

This holiday season will be much brighter for children in the west Georgia area following the response to Southwire’s annual toy drive in Carrollton, Ga.

With support from Southwire’s Project GIFT volunteers, team members, community partners and local residents, the event collected more than 5,000 toys — donating them to Carroll County Toys for Tots, which works to benefit children in west Georgia. 

Toys for Tots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity created in 1991 by the U.S. Marine Corps to bring joy to the holidays through the gift of a new toy and by sending a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children.   

“The holidays are such a special time of year and hold many precious memories for so many of us. The love and support from our community to ensure that children in our area experience that spark of joy warms my heart,” said Stefanie Anderson, senior Giving Back specialist.

For two days, Southwire volunteers gathered thousands of donations—including bikes, dolls, puzzles, action figures and more—and carefully packed them into donation boxes in an 18-wheeler, transforming it into a sleigh of holiday cheer for children in need.

Southwire Payroll Specialist, Stephanie Bierley, donned a Grinch costume during the toy drive, waving at cars passing by and taking photos with those who stopped by the event. 

“Participating in this event fills me with immense pride as a Southwire team member. Knowing that I could contribute by bringing smiles to children (and adults) on Christmas morning makes it all worthwhile,” said Bierley. “The Southwire Giving Back team works tirelessly, and our Southwire team members always step up in incredible ways. The generosity from local businesses and the community is truly inspiring.”

Several sponsors donated to the event including MedImpact, 3:16 Healthcare, Addison Smith, University of West Georgia, Heart Wood Products, Phoenix Wood Products, Jason Templeton of State Farm, Tisinger Vance and West Georgia Technical College.

Other sites participating in Toys for Tots efforts include Kent, El Paso and Kentucky. Carol Stream is collecting donations for the Feed My Starving Children initiative while Florence, Bremen, Pleasant Prairie, York and Youngsville will collect donations for the Salvation Army.

Minimizing our environmental impact

Our work to minimize our environmental impact starts within our walls. We have taken and continue to take steps to lower our carbon footprint by improving the energy efficiency of operations in our facilities as well as our logistics and transportation footprint. In addition, we have implemented programs to reduce the waste we generate.

ASSESSING OUR RENEWABLE ENERGY USE 
In 2023, we purchased over 40 million kilowatt hours of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. We are exploring energy-generation and purchase options that are best suited to our facilities while helping us reduce our emissions. We began investigating renewable energy credits, physical and virtual power purchase agreements, and on-site generation to determine if they might make sense for Quest in the future. This work is giving us insight into where these tactics can contribute to an overall emissions reduction strategy and target facility- and region-specific projects.

We also continued to conserve and optimize energy usage at our facilities using enterprise-wide operational best practices we developed in 2022. These practices have been implemented at more than 20 sites across the US.

SUPPORTING ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRANSITION 
In 2023, we built electric vehicle charging stations at labs in Marlborough MA, Tampa FL, and Atlanta GA. This is in addition to the charging stations we already have in place at our flagship lab in Clifton NJ.

We’re also working toward our goal of transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles. As of 2023, electric or hybrid vehicles account for ~2% of our fleet. Due to various factors such as supply chain challenges, our ability to source alternative fuel vehicles has been slower than planned. While we remain committed to evaluating the best path forward to progress this conversion, our goal of reaching 50% by 2026 is under review and subsequently may be updated.

In 2023, we continued to optimize courier routes—reducing our fleet miles driven by approximately 2.6 million miles, gasoline consumption by approximately 96,000 gallons, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 845 metric tons.

REDUCING AND ELIMINATING WASTE 
We have a multi-pronged approach to reduce waste generated and minimize waste to landfill. Quest implemented new programs to reduce waste generation, reuse materials where possible, and maximize recycling efforts. Where materials cannot be reasonably reused or recycled, a waste-to-energy strategy has been implemented instead of landfill. By the end of 2023, we installed on-site medical waste treatment technology at our 2 major hub laboratories in California. Through this technology, recycling efforts, and the use of waste-to-energy, in 2023 we eliminated infectious waste outputs from these labs and diverted over 3,500 tons of medical and municipal waste from landfill. This effort generated over 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, and avoided over 6,900 tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases. We continue to assess and explore innovations in waste management to reduce our environmental impact.

Reducing packaging and emissions 

In 2022, we launched a box optimization project, leveraging an innovative software solution to decrease the number of boxes we ship with collection supplies. In 2023, the program yielded an 11% reduction in boxes (which equates to 84,000 boxes, or 23 tons of cardboard). This program also cut down the number of trips needed to transport these shipments, further reducing our emissions.

STRENGTHENING OUR WAYS OF WORKING 
As we progress along our sustainability journey, we are investing in the internal systems and capabilities needed to set us up for success, including through enhanced coordination and collaboration. In 2023, we developed a cross-functional approach to oversight of our environmental sustainability disclosure and reporting, including committees specifically focused on data collection, calculation, and assurance. In addition, to improve the quality of our Scope 3 reporting, we worked to secure third-party limited assurance regarding some of that Scope 3 data (specifically categories 1, 4, and 5). We plan to use this data along with our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to better understand our environmental impact.

STANDARDIZING FACILITY ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE 
In 2023, we continued to focus on obtaining ISO 14001 certifications for our lab facilities. ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized management system that leverages leadership involvement and employee engagement to:

This certification demonstrates Quest’s commitment to environmental management and regulatory compliance. In 2023, we achieved ISO 14001 certifications for our Cleveland HeartLab and laboratory facility in Chantilly VA—this is in addition to our lab in San Juan Capistrano which received certification in 2022, bringing our total certified facilities to 3.

Exploring the links between environmental and human health 

Quest is exploring the impact environmental changes have on human health and well-being. In 2023, we launched an Environmental Health Impact Committee to address intertwined environmental and health issues. The Committee meets to discuss how Quest solutions can help address the health impacts of climate change, and to leverage insights from Quest’s diagnostic testing to inform conversation and policy around climate change and public health.

Recently, regenerative agriculture has seen a surge in interest as a promising approach to enhance sustainability and climate resilience within the agri-food system. Yet, as enthusiasm grows, so do questions about whether these practices can deliver on the ambitious environmental outcomes they aim to achieve.

Modern farming has led to significant loss of carbon stored in soil and ecosystem degradation. Recently, regenerative agriculture has seen a surge in interest as a promising approach to enhance sustainability and climate resilience within the agri-food system. Practices like maintaining soil cover, reducing tillage, and optimizing inputs have gained widespread attention for their potential benefits. Yet, as enthusiasm grows, so do questions about whether these practices can deliver on the ambitious environmental outcomes they aim to achieve.

For decades, scientists have studied the impact of these practices on soil health and their ability to improve the resilience of crops, sequester carbon, conserve water, reduce erosion, and improve biodiversity. Science shows, the answer is positive.

In the right places, with the right incentives, regenerative agriculture can play a critical role in not only sequestering large amounts of carbon, but also in building on-farm resiliency and benefiting the ecosystem at large. Deep agronomic knowledge and quantification technology are key to getting placement and incentives right.

Indigo Ag’s sustainability programs — rooted in agronomic knowledge, advanced quantification technology, and meaningful incentives — have shown scaling regenerative agriculture as a solution to achieve positive climate outcomes is possible. With over 7 million acres enrolled, we are pioneering this approach on an unprecedented and growing scale.

Scaling such solutions for widespread adoption, however, involves inherent complexities. Recognizing this, Indigo remains committed to upholding the highest standards of scientific rigor and integrity. To ensure transparency and credibility, we submitted our findings for scientific peer review. This research, which analyzed our first three carbon credit issuances, confirmed that large-scale initiatives can effectively build soil carbon and deliver significant environmental benefits when the right incentives are in place.

Our initial three carbon credit issuances alone totaled nearly 300,000 credits — by far the largest volume of high-quality agricultural soil carbon credits issued repeatedly at scale. This program has created real, measurable climate and environmental impact, resulting in millions of dollars paid directly to farmers for their efforts. And as our methodologies and understanding of soil carbon science evolve, our research shows that the impact per acre is even greater than initially estimated. With Indigo’s carbon credits now priced between $60 and $80 per credit — and approaching the catalytic $100 mark — the potential returns for farmers continue to grow, offering a valuable opportunity amid volatile commodity markets and rising input costs. 

Key findings from the study include: 

Technology enables scalable monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) for regenerative agriculture that accounts for greenhouse gas emissions and soil organic carbon. Reduced nearly 400,000 tons of carbon equivalent emissions, resulting in nearly 300,000 carbon credits issued.The impact of farming practices varies by geography, underscoring the need for tailored solutions for different regions, ideally down to the field level.High-impact practices: No-till and cover crops contribute the most to soil carbon at the project scale, with cover crops having one of the highest impacts per acre across a range of geographies.By incentivizing outcomes and tailoring advice regionally, we can ensure the right solution is applied to the right acre.

Like other emerging climate solutions, regenerative agriculture faces the challenge of balancing lengthy research timelines with the urgency of reducing atmospheric carbon now. Carbon emissions avoided or sequestered today have a greater impact than the same reduction achieved a decade from now, helping us avoid critical climate tipping points. Decades of research demonstrate the benefits of sustainable farming practices, with some areas well-documented and others under-studied. In some cases, science is still building methods to measure the impacts of regenerative practices that people and communities working the land have known and witnessed for generations. Bringing together the experience and wisdom of these practitioners with peer-reviewed science is critical for scaling solutions with genuine environmental and ecosystem impact. A key question remains: Can findings from prior studies be generalized and scaled?

Rather than waiting for others to address this question, we chose to act — experimenting, gathering evidence, and sharing results with the broader scientific community. Our recent publication demonstrates impact at scale is possible with appropriate safeguards and a focus on areas of greatest certainty of impact.

And we are just getting started. We understand that sustainability and decarbonization in agriculture require multiple approaches, with carbon credits being just one tool.

Science and technology are at the heart of our approach to open new markets for farmers to participate in the programs that reward them best for the ecosystem benefits they provide. The same monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) engine that drives our carbon credit programs is helping supply chains incentivize sustainable practices, whether it’s cotton for clothing, rice for food, or corn for biofuels. These flexible solutions are and will help companies meet their goals while improving farm profitability and resilience.

Since we launched our Carbon and Sustainable Sourcing programs, we’ve learned a tremendous amount and worked hard to use learnings to improve them. While we began in areas with greater scientific certainty, we’ve invested in scientific research, partnered with others to explore under-researched areas, and advocated for universities and government to fill gaps in knowledge. This approach, combined with transparency and a commitment to the highest standards of integrity, is driving progress in regenerative agriculture and carbon markets.

The benefits of programs that reward regenerative agriculture go beyond emissions reductions and carbon removals. Regenerative agriculture positively affects multiple ecosystem services and the environment, such as improved water quality and reduced erosion. When valued with market-based incentives, these systems also positively impact farm resiliency and rural communities by ensuring that farmers themselves receive the majority of the value generated by our programs.

Just as we continuously improve the science and technology behind our programs, we also expand the pool of producers that can benefit from them. Early on, we adjusted our minimum acre requirements to ensure more farmers, including smaller operations, could participate. We’ve also expanded the geographies and crops we can support. As ecosystem markets grow, this must continue to ensure that structural barriers, which historically underserved some producers, are not perpetuated. It’s why engagement with groups like the National Black Growers Council and the National Indian Carbon Coalition are vital to enabling us to build programs that are inclusive of the diversity of farmers across the continental U.S.

The science remains foundational, and we’re committed to advancing it. It’s why our customers and partners trust us, it’s why we continue to share our findings, and it’s why we invite the scientific community and the farming community to engage and work with us to answer the open questions and identify areas where our programs can improve.
