Companies are operating in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world. The world is changing fast. People are frustrated. Societal tensions and expectations surrounding corporate leadership are mounting, including accountability, trust, and resentment. Citizens voted in new administrations in the U.S. and beyond, and in some cases, taken concerns into their own hands.

The coming year is the time for corporations to put their corporate purpose into bold action. Why? Companies have the scope and scale to deliver as a significant employer, supply chain engine, and social impact partner with society. In fact, CECP was founded because corporate leaders saw that the disinvestment in local operating communities while globalization grew was a false promise of prosperity. Businesses of all sizes contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, with private sector businesses alone collectively representing over 87% of U.S. GDP. But sharper tools are needed to address this VUCA world—such as vision paired with a plan of action, methods to listen and respond to stakeholders, and metrics to maintain accountability. And it all starts with purpose.

What does authentic corporate action look like? Leading companies will succeed both economically and in rebuilding trust by increasing business and societal value. The four areas for companies to focus on in 2025 to deliver a return on purpose include:

Focus on Sustainable Value with a Clear PurposeDrop the Labels, Do the WorkAmp up Investments in Local CommunitiesEngage with Employees by Tapping into the Total Talent Pool

Focus on Sustainable Value with a Clear Purpose

Investors must sift through thousands of data points simply to understand a company’s future plans and how it is addressing risk. We know from Investing in Society that in 2022 only 55% of Fortune 500 and 73% of S&P Global 1200 companies had net-zero targets. To authentically communicate commitment, companies can increase their reporting in these areas. And investors want to hear this information directly from the CEO. By integrating corporate purpose into their reporting and strategic frameworks, CEOs can authentically demonstrate how their companies are addressing short-term challenges while advancing long-term societal and financial goals.

Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose®’s (CECP) Giving in Numbers™: 2024 Edition found almost all of the surveyed companies reference applying their corporate purpose as they made business decisions outside of social investments. While this suggests an integration of corporate purpose into the company’s daily operations, 92% of companies also reported that their leadership referenced their purpose as they made social investment decisions such as grantmaking, strategy, and the development of focus areas. This is why we are continuously supporting companies with developing their Integrated Long-Term Plan Frameworks to help CEOs and CFOs communicate long-term plans and sustainable business strategies.

At CECP’s recent CEO Investor Forum, leaders shared their strategies for material metrics and long-term value creation. “In the future, every single workflow will have AI embedded into it, and that’s the only real way of creating value,” said Rohit Kapoor, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, EXL. “AI by itself does not create value. AI embedded into the workflow creates value. If you can combine deep knowledge of your clients’ business models along with a strong technical expertise in data and how to embed AI into the workflow, that is a very powerful equation, and that’s what our strategy is built on.”

Drop the Labels, Do the Work

The purpose of a corporation is to conduct a profitable, lawful, ethical, and sustainable business, creating value over the long-term, in consideration of its stakeholders. It articulates the impact a company aims to have on its stakeholders, society, and the environment while fulfilling its business objectives. A well-defined corporate purpose aligns a company’s values, strategy, and actions with long-term goals that serve both economic and social interests.

In our increasingly polarized world, what to call such corporate purpose efforts—especially with threats on terms such as Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI)—remains a debate. For instance, 18 percent of CECP Pulse Survey respondents reported that their company has chosen not to speak up publicly in support of ESG to avoid drawing attention from critics, while continuing to invest in ESG strategies because they view it as beneficial for the company and its stakeholders.

These attacks on language used demonstrate the challenges that acronyms and labels carry when there may not be an understanding behind them. CECP research shows that companies are continuing to pursue their strategies and underlying goals—like meeting the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)—although how they talk about it may evolve. The same CECP Pulse Survey conducted about the backlash against ESG and the challenges of measuring its core areas found that a quarter of the respondents indicated that the backlash has not impacted their strategies. Companies have invested too much to pull back and know the business value of staying committed to these promises. “We must continue to break this mistaken paradigm that purpose and profit are at odds. They go together,” said Sara Armbruster, President & CEO, Steelcase Inc. “The more we can put those two things together and thread the needle in harmonious ways – that’s when the magic happens.”

But concurrently, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is under attack by activists, with many companies re-evaluating the legal and political risks associated with programs to bolster historically underrepresented groups. A recent CECP Pulse Survey found a third of respondents have changed the name of their DEI programs or departments in the last two years, suggesting a movement toward reevaluating, or potentially renaming and clarifying the outcomes of these initiatives to better align with evolving external developments and stakeholder expectations. We advise discussing responsible business initiatives in clear language and less business jargon, such as explaining efforts to make their people feel welcome, included, and connected.

But let’s not confuse external-facing tactics like renaming with strategy, as many companies are still actively doing the work and recognize these programs are critical drivers for innovation, financial performance, and market reach. A corporate focus on belonging can be expansive and include workplace safety, career development, workplace flexibility, and fair management. For example, Applied Materials Momentum Fund, provides women majoring in engineering with timely financial support to cover unexpected expenses and helps ensure they complete their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. This is a time for companies to realize the substantial benefits of diversity and economic inclusion in creating a competitive edge., provides women majoring in engineering with timely financial support to cover unexpected expenses and helps ensure they complete their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. This is a time for companies to realize the still substantial benefits of diversity and economic inclusion in creating a competitive edge.

Amp up Investments in Local Communities

In the coming year, corporate investments in local communities will reflect evolving priorities shaped by societal and policy shifts. As companies achieve lower taxes and likely greater profitability, they may face rising expectations to demonstrate returns on their broader societal contributions. The Median Total Community Investment (TCI) for all companies participating in CECP’s Giving in NumbersTM Survey increased 2% between 2021 and 2023 to US$22.9 million, which includes direct cash, foundation cash, and non-cash, such as product donations or pro bono services. And community investment as a percentage of pre-tax profit increased 25% between 2020-2022, bringing the 2022 median just under 1% of pre-tax profit being allocated to community investment.

Given a likely 5% tax cut, companies can build trust among their stakeholders by being transparent with the way they will invest that windfall. We encourage companies to do a wide variety of things to invest in their companies and stakeholders, including seeking to allocate a minimum 1% of pre-tax profit—CECP’s long-standing industry standard—to address pressing community and social issues. To be in the top quartile of companies, companies must double that standard to reach above 2% of pre-tax profit.

Leading companies are strategic about their investments and have moved away from scattered charitable grantmaking toward investments that deliver measurable social and economic impact. Median investments in the areas of Community and Economic Development increased by 87% between 2021 and 2023. This includes contributions to community development (e.g., aid to Black-owned businesses and economic development councils), housing and urban renewal, and grants to neighborhood or community-based groups—including anchor institutions. This approach emphasizes long-term community benefits, often aligning with business goals such as workforce development or market expansion. These investments have not only addressed immediate challenges but have also positioned businesses as critical partners in fostering sustainable economic growth.

Engage with Employees by Tapping into the Total Talent Pool

Business owners whose companies rely on immigrant workers are processing what the next Administration could mean for their future, especially for frontline workers. Key changes anticipated include stricter visa processes, heightened enforcement, and possible curtailment of programs like DACA, which has allowed many immigrants to work in the U.S. How should companies more readily engage with their employees while keeping this in mind?

One of the ways companies are mitigating these challenges is by focusing on retention strategies. Employers are proactively assessing their workforce, expanding analysis of a robust pipeline of talent needed for the jobs of the future, and reskilling current employees to stay up to date. Pariveda believes Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) are a powerful way to support employee engagement by enabling employees to own part, or all, of the company they work for. Fidelity Investments® is working to tailor engagement and charitable giving for the multigenerational workforce. And AI is empowering the workforce by saving time and enabling better decisions. Amit Bajaj, President – North America, Tata Consultancy Services said, “TCS has carved its place as a pioneer of emerging technologies like AI, which is disrupting industries globally—and we are set to create one of the largest AI-ready workforces in the world.” By fostering a sense of ownership and investing in the development and upskilling of talent, employers will increase job satisfaction and career growth opportunities that boost employee morale and retention.

The focus on workforce development fosters a culture of belonging for your employees. Over the next five years, projections suggest that the U.S. will continue to diversify, with younger generations leading the way. Approximately 45% of Gen Z who were eligible to vote in 2024 are individuals of color. And as of this decade, white men now make up about 20% of U.S. college graduates, where in the early 2000s, white men accounted for approximately 30–35% of college graduates. These shifts have implications for meeting specific workforce needs, as the nation adapts to an increasingly racially and ethnically diverse population.

In 2025, businesses have a significant opportunity to demonstrate leadership by aligning corporate strategy with societal goals. But what does this mean for you and how will you navigate the next four years? How will your company step up to meet the needs of your people and communities? How will you leverage this societal role to deliver a measurable return on purpose for your company?

To support these vital societal policies and programs, leading companies will be well served to come together to share the business cases for responsible business and workplaces that care for their people and keep them safe, while allocating at least 1% of pre-tax profit to address pressing community and social issues. These actions will establish trust, create a culture where employees will stay, and meet stakeholder demands, ultimately building resilience for the future.

By focusing on dropping the labels and doing the work, amping up investments in local communities, engaging with employees by tapping into the total talent pool, and focusing on sustainable values with a clear purpose, companies create enduring value that benefits both their bottom line and society. Businesses are key players in shaping a thriving economy and a better world.

Gen Blog | Community

Giving season is in full swing here at Gen. Beginning with our “Geniversary” on November 7, the day we launched as a new company in 2022, and extending through the end of December, we spend the end of the year supporting the causes and communities that mean the most to us. Through donation campaigns, matching gift programs and more—united under the banner of #WeAreGenerous—Gen team members are fostering the spirit of giving that lies at the center of our culture.

This year, our holiday giving efforts resulted in nearly $574,000 in donations to more than 1,400 nonprofit organizations, with roughly 65% of team members across the company supporting causes relating to education, human services, healthcare and more.

Empowering Team Members to Support Worthy Causes

Our donation campaigns allow Gen team members to maximize their support for the causes they care about. To celebrate our Geniversary, every employee across the company was given a special $50 reward to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. The campaign was run from November 7-17 through the Gen Giving Hub, an internal platform powered by Benevity that allows our teams to find volunteering, giving and educational opportunities in one easy-to-use place.

Additionally, three team members who shared the causes they supported with their colleagues were chosen at random to receive another $200 in donation rewards.

“I read somewhere, ‘We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone,’” wrote Shirish Kondawar, a Gen team member in Pune, India, and one of the lottery winners. “Gen is playing a key role in enabling and triggering this broader action… I donated to the Sant Ishwar Foundation near Pune that helps abandoned and vulnerable girls in need of care and protection, women with disabilities and the elderly.”

The results from this campaign, which saw increases in participation rates and number of causes supported since 2023, tie into Gen’s company-wide culture of giving. Since April, the global participation rate in our overall giving and volunteering program is at more than 67%, up from 55% in 2023. Total employee giving in the current fiscal year including matching exceeds $707,000.

Doubling Our Impact on Giving Tuesday

We also continued our annual tradition of matching 2:1 all team member contributions to nonprofits for Giving Tuesday on December 3. In just 24 hours, team members across the globe, as well as every member of Gen’s Leadership Team, gave to a wide variety of organizations, from local parent-teacher organizations to orchestras to the dog shelter collective Naděje pro čtyři packy (“Hope for Four Paws”), which Gen team members in Czechia supported by creating and selling the “GenoWoofers” calendar of employees’ dog photos.

“Though I’ve always been in a position of relative privilege and comfort, I have needed and gotten a lot of help in my life, both emotional and financial, so I would like to help those who are lacking food, water, safety, justice, whatever,” wrote one Gen team member who supported multiple causes on Giving Tuesday. “I want to close the gap between what I do and how much more I could be doing. We’re in this together, and all of us are better off when we help each other.”

Ongoing efforts include donation drives at our offices in the U.S., Czechia, Ireland, India, Germany, Romania and Serbia. Each site has established donation spaces in their offices where team members can donate canned food, toys, holiday gifts and more to local organizations working on the ground in their communities. Multiple sites also offered in-person or virtual volunteer events with their partner organizations.

Serving Our Communities Year-Round

Our team members continue to keep our spirit of giving alive even after the holiday season ends. Through efforts like our Global Volunteering Week, our internal platform that connects team members with service opportunities, paid time off to volunteer and more, we provide employees with meaningful ways to put their time, skills and resources to use. Check out our latest Social Impact Report for more information on how we make a difference.

BALI, Indonesia, December 19, 2024 /3BL/ – KSU Taman Wijaya Rasa (otherwise known as Kostajasa) – a cooperative based in Kebumen, Central Java province, Indonesia – has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainable forestry by achieving its fourth cycle of FSC Forest Management certification. This milestone marks more than 15 years of continuous certification, underscoring Kostajasa’s dedication to responsible forest management and contributions to the local community.

Kostajasa manages a group of smallholders in the region, focusing on valuable timber species such as Teak, Mahoni, and Sengon. This year, the cooperative expanded its scope to include Coconut Sugar as a Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP), further diversifying its contributions to sustainable economic development.

A symbolic certificate handover ceremony was held in Kebumen on Monday, December 16, 2024, to celebrate their ongoing achievements and vital role in sustainable forestry. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including representatives from FSC Indonesia, Cabang Dinas Kehutanan (CDK) Wilayah 8 (a regional branch of the forestry service in Indonesia), and the Kebumen Cooperative Office. Todd Frank, SCS Global Services’ Director, Southeast Asia, presented Kostajasa with the FSC certificate.

“We are grateful for this achievement,” said Untung Karnanto, Manager, Kostajasa at the event. “FSC certification is not just an accolade but concrete proof that we have met international standards in forest management. Today, we hold a thanksgiving ceremony to celebrate successfully obtaining FSC certification once again for international-scale community forest management for the fourth cycle.”

“Kostajasa’s consistent FSC certification over the past 15 years exemplifies the strength and staying power of community-driven sustainable forest practices,” said Todd Frank. “Their dedication to responsible forest management not only supports the environment but also strengthens local livelihoods. SCS Global Services is proud to stand alongside Kostajasa in their journey toward a more sustainable future.”

Through its activities, Kostajasa has made significant contributions to the local community and its members. By providing market access for selling logs and creating job opportunities for harvesting teams, the cooperative has enhanced livelihoods while promoting sustainable forest management practices. These efforts highlight the critical role that forestry cooperatives play in balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities.

The Kebumen Cooperative Office acknowledged Kostajasa’s unique position as the only cooperative in the region actively focusing on forestry activities. This focus not only supports the livelihoods of its members but also contributes positively to environmental conservation.

“Kostajasa’s achievement is exemplary,” remarked Haryono Wahyudi, Head of Disperindag KUKM (Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and Small and Medium Enterprises) Kebumen. “Their work benefits both the community and the environment, making them a vital part of our region’s sustainable development.”

The cooperative’s long-standing FSC certification highlights their adherence to global sustainability standards, ensuring responsible management of forest resources. By maintaining certification over four cycles, Kostajasa has proven its resilience and unwavering commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

Charity Navigator Rating for 18th Consecutive Year

As Hunger Impacts 1 in 11 People Worldwide,

Rating Helps Donors Identify the Most

Trusted Nonprofits

NEW YORK, December 19, 2024 /3BL/ – Action Against Hunger, a nonprofit leader in the global movement to end hunger, today announced it has received its 18th consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. The rating once again designates Action Against Hunger as an official “Give with Confidence” charity, indicating that it uses its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator’s comprehensive criteria that go beyond financials to reflect the work charities do.

Charity Navigator analyzes overall nonprofit health and performance based on four key areas: Leadership & Adaptability to help donors understand if a charity has clarity of purpose, Accountability & Finance to explain if they are transparent and fiscally capable, Culture & Community to show how they engage with their constituents, and Impact & Results to explain what they have accomplished..

We are delighted to provide Action Against Hunger with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “The Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that Action Against Hunger can accomplish in the years ahead.”

The recognition comes as the number of people who need humanitarian assistance is rising. As many governments around the world cut foreign aid budgets, an Action Against Hunger analysis found that only 35% of hunger funding needs through the UN humanitarian system are met, leaving a 2023 hunger funding gap of 65%. This is a 23% increase from the previous year. It also found that countries experiencing the worst hunger crises subsequently received less funding for hunger programs than did countries with lower hunger rates. Action Against Hunger, with support from donors, aims to fill these gaps and save lives.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Charles E. Owubah, CEO of Action Against Hunger. “As hunger continues to escalate around the world, it’s critical that the international community prioritize this issue. The Charity Navigator rating reinforces donor confidence that their financing is effectively employed to drive meaningful change. We will continue to transparently report on our fight to end hunger for everyone, everywhere.”

Charity Navigator analyzes nonprofit performance based on four key indicators: Impact & Results, Accountability & Finance, Culture & Community, and Leadership & Adaptability beacons. For every dollar donated to Action Against Hunger, 90 cents goes directly to its programs, which reach 21 million people each year.

The Causeway Global Health Fund, a unique new platform designed to simplify donor giving will also include Action Against Hunger. Like mutual funds, Causeway enables donors to build portfolios focused on specific causes, ensuring their contributions support organizations creating a meaningful impact.

Action Against Hunger is the only NGO exclusively focused on reducing and eliminating hunger and malnutrition.  The organization invests heavily in technical research and innovation to fill gaps in the global evidence base on hunger and malnutrition. It has the operational expertise to directly implement programs and build capacity locally, and advocate within the humanitarian community and with governments to change and improve policy and practice.

What have you seen change about the interest in small and microbusinesses?

“Supporting small businesses and microbusinesses is increasingly a topic of
public importance. States are creating Offices of Entrepreneurship or designating a key official to lead entrepreneurship statewide, as advocated by Right to Start. Nevada began the trend in the summer of 2023. New Mexico, Kansas, Michigan, and Missouri extended the trend since then. From what we see nationwide, that trend will only continue to grow.”

Deputy Director & Chief Strategy Officer: Workforce Connections
Southern Nevada’s Local Workforce Development Board

How has data about microbusinesses affected your work and/or perspective?

“The data regarding the number of microbusinesses operating in the Las Vegas
Valley was eye-opening. With help from GoDaddy and other partners, we created a well-attended Microbusiness Summit at Las Vegas City Hal. The event helped connect
local entrepreneurs to information about how to license, market, and finance their businesses – areas that were identified through the research as common entrepreneurial challenges in our region.”

Why is it important to shine a spotlight on the impact of microbusinesses?

“Microbusinesses were flying under the radar until this data came along. By reaching customers far and wide, online businesses bring new money into the community, benefiting everyone as they grow. Anyone interested in their town’s economic future
should know what’s happening in this space.”

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Mexico City office has helped provide new homes for local families in need with TECHO, a Latin American nonprofit focused on housing poverty.Funding and employee volunteers from Marathon allowed for constructing homes for three families who had been living in makeshift dwellings in the southern part of the city. The project was completed in a single weekend with assistance from the families and TECHO volunteers.

Three families in Mexico City who had been living in crude structures with dirt floors and no running water recently saw their circumstances transformed over a single weekend. TECHO, a Latin American nonprofit, organized construction of new homes for the families with funding via Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Mexico City office, which also provided employee volunteers to help do the work.

“It was an incredibly rewarding experience! Though it left us with sore muscles, we were filled with joy knowing we made a significant impact on three families in desperate need,” MPC Latin America Finance Director Antinea Reyes said. “These families previously lived in makeshift shelters made of discarded materials with no flooring and were exposed to harsh weather conditions. They now have decent homes.”

TECHO assists people in Latin America and the Caribbean who are facing housing challenges because of poverty and natural disasters. The organization provides homes that are made from prefabricated wooden panels, which allows them to be assembled in a short period of time.

The weekend project in Mexico City involved 27 MPC employee volunteers, TECHO volunteers and members of the families who would receive the homes. Their tasks included digging holes for wooden piles that support the floors as well as putting together the walls and rooftops of the houses. Each home was outfitted with a water catchment system that has 290 gallons of storage capacity.

“It was an incredibly rewarding experience! Though it left us with sore muscles, we were filled with joy knowing we made a significant impact on three families in desperate need.”

“It was a gratifying activity that helps us value what we have, from our jobs at MPC to our homes,” said MPC Mexico Government and Public Affairs Director Paulo Esteban Alcaraz. “I am very proud of MPC as a company for contributing to this effort and allowing us to be part of it.”

MPC’s Mexico City office supports the company’s ARCO® retail brand in the country along with additional efforts that involve importing and marketing fuels more broadly. The office’s finance department organized and led MPC’s volunteer effort, which marked the first time that employees from the Mexico City office have assisted TECHO.

“We look forward to carrying on this community involvement in the future and having even more employees become part of this,” Alcaraz said. “The integration with the rest of the team is very valuable. Getting to know colleagues even better really helps further connect us as one team.”

The gift will benefit students and faculty across multiple disciplines, including the School of Science, the School of Engineering, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, as well as various technological advancements at the university.

“We are proud to join with Hampton University to invest in the future of education and technology,” said Leidos CEO Tom Bell. “This gift reflects the strength of our relationship with the school and our ongoing commitment to fostering innovation, developing talent, and ensuring students have the tools and experiences they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.”

The multi-year Leidos contribution will fund student scholarships, provide students with learning opportunities at Leidos facilities, and enhance Hampton University’s technology infrastructure to foster a more dynamic and interactive educational environment.
