At the recent GreenBiz25 conference, I had the privilege to lead a break-out session on nature case studies and join a panel to discuss integrating nature into corporate strategy. I was able to share how Chemours is actively working to enhance nature and ecosystem resilience across our sites while engaging our communities.

At Chemours, we take our commitment to protect the environment and our communities seriously. That’s why we partnered with Tandem Global (formerly Wildlife Habitat Council) to complete nature and biodiversity assessments in 2024, including using the Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) guidance to identify and understand the nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities within Chemours operations and our value chain, ensuring we are well-positioned to report on and address these critical issues.

This collaboration helped us build a framework aligned with our corporate vision and enables our sites to enhance their conservation efforts. As part of this work, we launched the “Power of ChemisTREE” program, which exemplifies our commitment to renewing habitats and fostering conservation across our operational sites and in the communities where we work. The Power of ChemisTREE focuses on multiple fronts, including tree planting, invasive species removal, and the creation of pollinator gardens, all of which play crucial roles in enhancing environmental resilience.

By integrating nature into our strategy and engaging beyond corporate teams to meet our employees where they are, we are driving real, tangible actions that contribute to our long-term sustainability goals and support our work to strengthen Chemours for the long term. Our journey is ongoing, and we are committed to doing our part to ensure ecosystem resilience and nature stewardship.

In high-income countries, more than 80% of children diagnosed with cancer will survive. Yet in some low- and middle-income countries, this number tragically drops to 20%1.

At a UN General Assembly meeting in 2018, Dr. David G. Poplack, Global HOPE founding director (now retired) discovered that Teva provides a significant portion of the medicines that treat pediatric cancer, which can help change this reality. That’s when Teva’s partnership with Texas Children Hospitals’ Global HOPE (Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence) program was born.

Global HOPE takes a sustainable approach to treating children with cancer and blood disorders, addressing inequities in care by:

Training doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals (HCPs)Enhancing access to essential medicinesImproving pediatric healthcare facilities

Between 2021 and 2024, Teva donated approximately 1.5 million doses of medicines (worth about $27 million) to patients in Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana and Rwanda, with the help of Direct Relief. This includes about 20 different types of medicines, such as chemotherapy, anti-infectives, anti-fungal and hormone therapy. And during the COVID-19 pandemic, we mobilized quickly to assure essential medicines and supplies continued to reach patients in the region.

We also support training programs to teach HCPs how to handle these medicines and help patients access them. In 2024, we trained 234 HCPs, who went on to diagnose 1,731 patients. We also awarded 11 scholarships to nurses and a medical officer and organized 3 workshops for 141 HCPs on professional well-being.

For Teva, the partnership with Global HOPE supports our targets to increase access to medicines, which are integrated into our business strategy, with some tied to executive compensation and a sustainability-linked bond. We have launched nine access to medicines programs around the world to date (exceeding our commitment of eight by 2025), getting our medicines to more people who need them, including in low- and middle-income countries.

Prior to his retirement in 2024, Dr. Poplack paid tribute to the partnership’s impact: “I’ve seen a lot in pediatric cancer over many years, but of all the things I’ve been involved in, Global HOPE and this partnership with Teva has the greatest potential medical impact. There is much we can do together to save many thousands of lives. If we’re able to improve survival by 40%, 40,000 children per year will be saved. It’s an amazing statistic.”

MIAMI, February 27, 2025 /3BL/ – Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, is advancing greater fuel efficiency for propulsion through innovative hull designs and new hardware and technology, along with underwater drone inspection and cleaning trials.

This work is done through complementary strategies focused on maximizing hydrodynamic performance and enhancing ongoing hull maintenance, which reduces a ship’s underwater drag. Together, these efforts reduce fuel use for each ship and across the company’s global fleet, which also lowers its overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“We’re not just tinkering here – we’re looking at every available area for improvement for how our cruise ships operate,” said Lars Ljoen, chief maritime officer for Carnival Corporation. “By combining state-of-the-art hull designs, advanced propulsion technology and years of experience, we’re continuously enhancing our ships’ performance.”

Increasing Hydrodynamic Efficiency

The following elements cumulatively improve hydrodynamic efficiency across the fleet, reducing the propulsive power and fuel needed to drive ships through water:

Hull Designs: When selecting the optimal hull design, computer-assisted analysis enables ship and propeller designers to run hundreds of thousands of simulations, identifying the best design options for different sailing conditions.Trim Optimization: Software is used onboard to optimize the trim of a vessel by transferring ballast water internally to ensure that the ship operates continuously in the best configuration for propulsive efficiency.Podded Propellers: Over 40 ships in the company’s fleet are fitted with high-efficiency, 360-degree steerable podded propulsion units that are up to ~7% more efficient than conventional propellers. This number will continue to grow as new ships with this technology are added to the fleet.Air Lubrication Systems (ALS): Over 10% of the company’s fleet is already equipped with this leading-edge technology, which uses air bubbles to reduce the ship’s resistance as it moves through the water, reducing propulsive fuel consumption by 5% or more. Over the next three years, 10 more ships are planned for ALS conversion.Hull Inspections with Drones: Drones are being trialed to monitor the condition of hull coatings, allowing the company to optimize the timing of hull cleaning and manage marine growth and debris for retaining peak hydrodynamic efficiency.Robot Hull Cleaning: The company is conducting trials with several service providers that offer the next generation of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) “robot” hull cleaners. The ROVs can map the hull and accelerate the cleaning process, offering continuous improvement opportunities for cleaning speed, efficiency and quality to approach the goal of full hull cleaning during a single port visit and efficiently cleaning without damaging protective hull coatings.Next-Gen Hull Paint: Innovative new hull coatings with advanced biofouling prevention are continually being tested across the company’s global operations to evaluate durability, efficiency, longevity and ease of application. At any one time, about 15% of the Carnival Corporation fleet is trialing promising new coatings.

The application of increasingly effective hull coatings, and proactive maintenance and performance strategies are high on the list of Carnival Corporation’s fuel savings and decarbonization strategies as the company pursues its aspiration of net zero GHG emissions by 2050.

Ljoen added: “This has been a journey of small steps and years of continued collaboration to push the boundaries of innovation and drive solutions for greater efficiencies. It is safe to say that collectively these initiatives have contributed to significant improvements in fuel and energy efficiency over time. In essence, we are continuously reducing our environmental footprint at the same time we deliver the best vacation experience for our guests.”

DP World in Brazil has taken a significant step toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040 with the electrification of its Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes at the Santos terminal. 13 diesel-powered RTG cranes have now been fully converted to electric power, reducing diesel consumption by up to 60%. This initiative, part of an R$80 million ($16.2 million) investment, uses a system of overhead cables to ensure sustainable operations without compromising efficiency.

According to Fábio Siccherino, CEO of DP World Santos, the project not only delivers environmental benefits but also operational advantages, such as lower maintenance costs and improved reliability. This milestone aligns with DP World’s global sustainability strategy, Our World, Our Future, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2040. The Santos terminal’s efforts were recently recognized with the prestigious Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program for its commitment to transparent emissions reporting.

In addition to electrifying RTGs, DP World has invested R$12 million ($2.4 million) in over 30 environmental projects, including mangrove conservation, biomass reuse, and the elimination of landfill waste through its Zero Landfill initiative.

These sustainability efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize and expand operations at Santos. DP World has announced a $35 million investment to increase container handling capacity and extend the quay, as well as a $500 million partnership with Rumo to build a new grain and fertilizer terminal.

Globally, DP World has pledged up to $500 million over five years to cut carbon emissions by nearly 700,000 tons, cementing its position as a leader in sustainable logistics. From electrifying equipment to adopting renewable energy, the company continues to reshape the future of sustainable trade while driving operational excellence.

International Olympic Committee news

Over 6,000 athletes and members of their entourage have taken part in educational activities on the prevention of competition manipulation during 2024, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD). These activities took place during the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024.

Young athletes are usually more exposed to the threats of competition manipulation, including being asked to fix a game, share inside information or place bets. In 2024, the IOC therefore designed the most comprehensive educational programme to date in order to raise awareness of these risks.

This year’s IACD theme, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”, gave the IOC the opportunity to look back at the wide range of activities provided to athletes in Paris and Gangwon.

“Believe in Sport” booth at Paris 2024

During the Olympic Games Paris 2024, 4,000 athletes joined the fun and engaging activities on offer at the “Believe in Sport” booth located in the Athlete365 House, in the Olympic Village in Paris.

Athletes enjoyed various real-life scenarios and were also encouraged to report any suspicions of competition manipulation through the IOC Integrity Hotline.

“We have been trained on competition manipulation by both our sports federation and our National Olympic Committee. It’s great to have a reminder here, it keeps us educated”, said Shane O’Donoghue (Field Hockey, Ireland), while visiting the booth during the Games.

Paris 2024 Olympians were supported on site by six athlete ambassadors, whose engagement formed part of the IOC’s more comprehensive “Believe in Sport” campaign, which kicked off before the Games and involved educational measures across all key stakeholder groups.

Nina Kanto (Handball, France), one of the Believe in Sport Ambassadors who met her peers in the Olympic Village in Paris, said: “The young athletes need us to speak about manipulation in sport, the risks and the consequences of their decisions. I think it is important for the athletes to be educated, because as athletes you don’t know about all the rules. Your priority is to practise your sport. It is important to keep control of your career, so you know what you need to do, what is good and what is not.”

YOG athletes engaged at Gangwon 2024

A few months earlier, as part of the Athlete Education Programme in place at Gangwon 2024 in January, over 2,000 athletes were engaged in the Youth Olympic Villages and empowered to make the right choices, thanks to the support of athlete ambassadors and IOC Young Leaders.

Freestyle skier Fin Melville Ives from New Zealand, who competed in Gangwon, said: “Learning about competition manipulation and anti-doping – those were the ones that resonated the most. We’ve all learned about it, but we’ve never actually seen how it works. It’s been really fun doing the activities and learning more about the programmes here.”

One of the ambassadors, Olympian Andrej Miklavc, a retired Alpine skier from Slovenia, who advised athletes competing at the YOG in Gangwon, explained: “The prevalence of online betting options in sport requires athletes to comprehend all aspects of potential threats. They need to understand how easily they can become unwitting victims or tools for individuals with malicious intentions towards athletes or the Games.”

Fighting corruption in sport all year round

In order to maintain these important efforts all year round and build capacity and skills across all levels of society, the IOC, as Chair and co-founding partner of the International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS), works closely with international organisations, government representatives, and sports organisations to promote good governance in and around sport, through educational webinars and tools to mitigate the risks of corruption.

Additionally, the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions (OM Unit PMC) engages with National Olympic Committees and International Federations through regular workshops and seminars. During these sessions, the organisations receive key information on topics such as how to prevent competition manipulation through awareness-raising initiatives, how to set up efficient cooperation models in their specific sport or at national level, and how to conduct investigations.

The program is open to customers who have previously qualified for the Neighborhood Energy Saver, Weatherization or High Energy Use pilot programs.
Customers will receive incentives in the form of bill credits for shifting energy use during peak demand, up to $150 depending on how they choose to participate.
Neighborhood Energy $aver – Incentives have increased for this free program that offers walk-through energy assessments to help customers learn how their homes use energy and lower monthly electric bills as well as a variety of free energy-saving products.

Track your energy usage and making small adjustments within your home or business can help unlock energy savings.
Reduce your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting – the lower the temperature, the more you can save.
Set your water heater to 120 degrees. Water heating is typically the second-biggest user of energy in your home.
Change your air filter and schedule regular maintenance for your heating systems. Maintaining your heating systems can help increase efficiency.
Leave drapes or blinds open on the sunny side of the home to allow the sun’s rays to warm the house but close them at night to help insulate your home.
Operate ceiling fans in a clockwise direction in the winter to push warm air back down into the room.
Seal cracks in windows, doors and vents with caulking and weatherstripping to save 10% to 20% in heating costs.
Replace standard bulbs with LEDs. LEDs are more efficient than regular bulbs, while giving off the same amount of light.
