PHILADELPHIA, MARCH 31, 2025 /3BL/ – Tork, an Essity brand and the global leader in professional hygiene, today launched the Tork Coalition for Inclusive Hygiene whose mission is to explore how hygiene in public restrooms, often the busiest space in a facility, can be improved for the majority of users. Through the coalition, Tork continues its journey to understand the barriers people face in public restrooms and how to drive inclusive hygiene so everyone can have comfortable access to public restrooms.

The coalition is comprised of a group of experts and advocates who are passionate about finding solutions to the hygiene barriers that people face in public restrooms. The founding members include:

  • Dr. Steven Soifer, Co-Founder and Treasurer, American Restroom Association (ARA), and Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University.
  • Dan Rocker, LCSW and President, International Paruresis Association (IPA), an organization dedicated to raising awareness and providing support for individuals who experience social anxiety related to urination, commonly known as “shy bladder syndrome.”
  • Lee Moreau, Founder & Director of Other Tomorrows, an experience design and strategy consultancy, and Professor of Practice, Design at Northeastern University.

Together with Tork, the coalition will help raise awareness of the need to bring inclusive hygiene to public restrooms and develop resources that businesses and facilities can put into action in their restrooms. Tork has over 50 years of experience in the design and development of restroom products, recently receiving the world’s first Design for All certification for its dispenser development process.

“The Tork Coalition for Inclusive Hygiene is the beginning of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing what is a pervasive public health risk impacting millions,” said Amy Bellcourt, VP of Communications for Essity. “Research* shows that 44% of people feel anxious about using public restrooms when leaving their homes, and often plan their days, travel and lives around ensuring they have access to proper hygiene in public restrooms. This limits their experiences and can result in them not returning to a restaurant or avoiding purchasing food and drinks at an event due to fear of not finding a restroom that meets their needs.”

Tork recently surveyed more than 6,000 individuals in five countries and found that 44% of all respondents plan their travel routes to ensure they have access to public restrooms; 38% avoid eating or drinking while they are away from home to limit their use of public restrooms; 26% avoid a social event because of concerns around access to public restrooms; and 1 in 6 people have left a job because of a poor restroom. This data sheds a light on the scale of the issue and its impact on businesses, their visitors, customers and employees.

“This isn’t just about convenience; it’s a challenge affecting our society, businesses and the economy,” Bellcourt continued. “While the Americans with Disabilities Act has been pivotal in addressing some of these issues, our research shows there’s still so much more to be done. That’s why Tork is bringing together an expert group of individuals to advance an issue that often gets overlooked because many feel uncomfortable talking about it.”

“The public restroom experience is fraught with difficulty for so many people because broader awareness of the inherent challenges people face in restrooms is so low, and only known by people who regularly experience them,” Dr. Steven Soifer added. “I’m honored to be part of the very coalition that is working to get people talking about public restrooms, and I’m excited to help educate people and provide them with the guidance they need to create more inclusive hygiene in their public restrooms.”

The Coalition for Inclusive Hygiene was born out of a Tork led roundtable discussion that took place in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2024, where Tork – in partnership with the Global Handwashing Partnership – convened experts and leading voices representing public and private organizations to discuss the many barriers that impact how people experience public restrooms. The roundtable revealed how poor hygiene usability in public restrooms affects a surprising portion of the population and emphasized the need for greater awareness and education on the issue. Key Points

  • Operation Warm and Marathon Petroleum are marking five years of collaborating to provide coats and shoes to children in underserved communities.
  • Company grants have funded more than 60 distribution events that reached 26,500 children within the company’s operational footprint.
  • Employees contributed more than 1,000 volunteer hours to help stage these events.

Operation Warm Senior Partnership Manager Michael Andrews is very familiar with the demand in many underserved communities for the nonprofit’s services of providing new coats and shoes to children.

“I’ve watched children in underserved communities come to school in the winter wearing flip-flops,” Andrews said as he reflected on 2025 marking the fifth year of Operation Warm’s work with Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) and its midstream segment, MPLX.

In alignment with the company’s focus on Thriving Communities, Community Investment funding and employee volunteers make it possible to meet the needs of children in communities throughout areas where MPC and MPLX operate, including areas in and around tribal lands across the U.S.

“We haven’t been with MPC for five years for no reason. It’s the employees. They really do care about this outreach,” said Andrews. “The emotional impact is powerful. It goes beyond money to a human connection when volunteers interact with the children. That’s the big picture here.”

“The emotional impact is powerful. It goes beyond money to a human connection when volunteers interact with the children. That’s the big picture here.”

Over the five years, the support of MPC and MPLX has benefited about 26,500 children through grants that funded more than 60 distribution events across nearly 20 tribes within the company’s operational footprint. These events resulted in more than 1,000 employee volunteer hours. The company often augments the coats and shoes by also providing school supplies, food and health resources such as flu shots.

“We were able to impact many children and see their personalities come to life through the colors and styles they selected,” said Marathon Pipe Line Operations Superintendent Ross Simons, one of numerous employee volunteers. “We sometimes take for granted the clothing and shoes we wear every day, but seeing the smiles and happiness that these new items brought to the children was very special.”

The most recent distribution events occurred at the end of 2024 when employee volunteers fit hundreds of schoolchildren for coats and shoes in communities near tribal lands in Oklahoma, Oregon, Arizona and Idaho.

“Our attendance and academic scores have increased dramatically the past few years. We attribute this improvement to many factors, including Operation Warm events,” Fort Hall (Idaho) Elementary School Principal Debbie Steele said. “When students don’t have to focus on meeting their basic needs, it opens the door for them to focus their efforts on learning and growing academically and socially.”

International Olympic Committee news

Nearly nine in ten residents of the greater Paris region aged 15 and older – 88 per cent – actively followed the Olympic Games Paris 2024, as a recent study undertaken by the Paris Region Institute shows. With the slogan “Games Wide Open”, the Paris 2024 organisers set out to open the Olympic and Paralympic Games to as many people as possible – local and international – through a diverse range of programmes and experiences.

From attending the Opening and Closing Ceremonies along the River Seine, witnessing the best of sport at Paris 2024’s iconic venues, to immersing themselves in fan engagement activities and meeting Olympic medallists at the Champions Park, the people of Paris and its surrounding region fully embraced their role as hosts. Eighty-four per cent of residents of the Paris region stayed in the French capital during all or part of the Olympic Games period, according to the study.

The Paris 2024 organisers also made sure that the entire French nation was involved in the Games. More than 180 “Club 2024” venues were established across the country, offering the public a chance to watch live broadcasts of competitions and ceremonies, take part in a wide range of sporting activities, and enjoy cultural events. The study also shows that 79 per cent of the French population living outside the greater Paris region followed the Games.

“For two weeks during the Games, Paris was at the centre of a vibrant celebration of athleticism and the Olympic values, with the unifying power of sport on full display. Spectators filled the streets, creating an electrifying atmosphere that extended beyond competition to embrace participation, inclusion and the very essence of the Olympic spirit,” said Marie Sallois, the IOC Director for Corporate and Sustainable Development.

“Through their engagement, hospitality and unwavering support, the residents of Ile de France helped make these Games truly unforgettable.”

Marie Sallois
IOC Director for Corporate and Sustainable Development

As a signature event of Paris 2024, the Marathon Pour Tous mass marathon marked a historic first. The event gave amateur runners the unprecedented opportunity to race the same marathon course, on the same day, as the Olympic athletes. On 10 August, nearly 40,000 runners took to the streets of Paris, following the same route as the elite athletes, passing some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Louvre Pyramid, the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, and the Grand Palais. Between May 2024 and September 2024, satisfaction with the organisation of the Games amongst Ile-de-France residents rose from 72 per cent to 84 per cent.

An independent survey conducted on behalf of the IOC demonstrated the unprecedented global appeal of the Games, with around five billion people – 84 per cent of the potential global audience – following the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Spectators around the world watched the breathtaking athletic performances set against the stunning backdrop of Paris’s most iconic landmarks.

The Olympic spirit gained traction in France long before the Opening Ceremony, inspiring a new generation through nationwide initiatives. Leading up to the Games, over eight editions of Olympic and Paralympic Week (OPW) engaged five million young people, promoting physical activity, inclusion and the core values of Olympism. As part of these efforts, a nationwide programme successfully integrated 30 minutes of daily physical exercise into primary school routines, promoting healthier lifestyles from an early age. Additionally, the 1,2,3, Swim! programme provided swimming lessons to French children, equipping them with essential water safety skills.

There was a television commercial decades ago that asked viewers how they spelled the word relief. The answer was given by spelling out the name of a health product, emphasizing each letter.

In reference to helping in the aftermath of a disaster, or meeting ongoing health needs, one way to spell relief is “M-M-U” which stands for Mobile Medical Unit.

In 2023, FedEx donated a new MMU to Heart to Heart International. It is the largest vehicle in their fleet. The 45-foot unit brings medical supplies, medicine, equipment, and staff to disaster sites across the continental United States.

The donation of the MMU was made as part of the FedEx Cares Delivering for Good program. It’s a philanthropic initiative where FedEx provides in-kind shipping services and financial donations to support global disaster relief organizations.

The MMU increases Heart to Heart International’s capacity to respond to major disasters. It also equips them to meet ongoing health needs in communities. These include community health programs that bridge healthcare gaps and empower women to take control of their well-being, for example, by providing breast and cervical cancer screening.

The photo with this story shows the MMU, and a Mobile Medical Van, ready to serve people in St. Joseph and Buchanan County, Missouri in March 2025.

For thirty years, FedEx and Heart to Heart International have teamed up to provide relief to people in disaster stricken areas around the world. With 700 airplanes, and 200,000 vehicles on the world’s roads, FedEx can transport relief materials where they are urgently needed.

When natural disasters hit, and when community health programs are needed, how do you spell relief? “M-M-U.”

Chris Marshall, director of transparency and accountability at Cascale, participated in a recent Sourcing Journal Sustainability Summit, which centered around the theme of “Ambition vs. Action.” The event brought together industry leaders to explore critical issues facing the fashion industry and provided a platform for attendees to gain fresh insights and discuss practical solutions to drive meaningful, scalable change.

Marshall joined Sourcing Journal sourcing and labor editor, Jasmin Malik Chua for a fireside chat to discuss challenges and opportunities for the industry. After an overview of Cascale’s evolution from convening stakeholders to driving focused impact, Marshall highlighted Cascale’s strategic pillars—Combat Climate Change and Support Decent Work for All—as critical to this renewed focus.

While acknowledging the fashion industry’s struggle to meet sustainability targets, Marshall stressed the importance of continued commitment to goals, especially those related to decarbonization. He emphasized the need to accelerate action while addressing the barriers that prevent it. Marshall highlighted Cascale’s unique position to drive industry progress through the new Industry Decarbonization Roadmap (IDR), developed in partnership with Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) and with the support of RESET Carbon, which will look to prioritize action in the 10 percent of facilities across the textile and apparel supply chain that account for over 80 percent of manufacturing emissions globally, ensuring resources are targeted where they can drive the greatest impact.

Marshall also noted the need to create the business case for manufacturer investment to engage facilities and support their decarbonization journey. The IDR program seeks to leverage collective action among brands, enabling manufacturers to unlock decarbonization solutions. Expanding on Cascale’s strategic objective to Support Decent Work for All, Marshall highlighted the recent purchase of key assets of Better Buying Institute (BBI) as a significant milestone to advance responsible purchasing practices across the consumer goods industry. He shared how this strategic move reflected the organization’s commitment to amplifying supplier voices, fostering industry alignment, and embedding fair purchasing principles more deeply in global supply chains.

Speaking on recent developments in the EU around regulation with the recently proposed changes to the Omnibus Package, Marshall emphasized the need for harmonized legislation to level the playing field. He commended manufacturers and brands who have demonstrated a commitment to decarbonization and called for accelerated action. Marshall ended the discussion with an optimistic outlook for the future, noting the commitment among the delegates to collaborate on driving impactful change.

Glass is already the most sustainable packaging material. Now, we’re taking bold steps to further support its circularity and decarbonization by elevating our 2030 sustainability goals.

“2025 is going to be a milestone year for O-I in sustainability,” said Chief Administrative and Sustainability Officer Randy Burns at O-I’s Investor Day on March 14, 2025. “This year, we are going to hit many of our sustainability goals that we initially set for 2030. Today, we will unveil a new set of even more ambitious sustainability goals.”

This accomplishment marks a pivotal moment for the company. Even as O-I focuses on radically reducing enterprise costs, we’re raising the bar with updated sustainability targets for 2030, with 2019 as the baseline year.

  • 47% reduction in GHG emissions
  • 80% use of renewable electricity
  • 60% use of cullet (recycled glass) on average

These elevated goals not only put O-I on par with our competitors’ stated goals but also align with a 1.5-degree pathway.

Achieving Our Goals

Our updated goals represent a significant increase from our previous targets. Specifically, we are raising our GHG emissions reduction goal from 25% to 47%, our renewable electricity goal from 40% to 80%, and our average cullet usage goal from 50% to 60%.

To achieve these ambitious targets, we’ll leverage several key strategies:

  1. Renewable Electricity: A substantial portion of our GHG reduction will come from increasing our use of renewable electricity. We primarily purchase Renewable Electricity Certificates (RECs) to green our electricity supply, and we are also working on several potential solar projects.
  2. Recycled Content: Increasing our cullet use will play a crucial role in reducing GHG emissions. We will continue to foster recycling ecosystems, particularly where infrastructure is weak or non-existent, like in parts of our American footprint.
  3. Energy Management: We’ve created an energy strike team to find and destroy energy waste across our network. This highly talented cross-functional strike team is already engaged with our facilities to support them in reducing energy consumption and improving energy efficiency, contributing to our GHG reduction goal.
  4. Technology Improvements: We will continue to implement advanced technologies such as GOAT furnaces, hybrid electric furnaces, and the DOE project in Ohio, USA. These innovations will help us achieve our sustainability targets.

Aligning with the Paris Agreement

The elevated sustainability goals reflect O-I’s decisive action to better position the company as a leader in sustainable glass manufacturing.

“The 47% GHG reduction aligns O-I with a 1.5-degree pathway,” says O-I Sustainability Director Sonya Pump. “This aligns O-I with the target of the 2015 Paris Agreement to ‘limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.’ The idea is that keeping the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees should minimize extreme global warming effects.”

Increasing our cullet usage to 60% supports the circular economy by promoting the reuse of materials. The benefits of increased recycled content include:

  • Energy Savings: Recycled glass melts at a lower temperature than raw materials, reducing the energy required in the manufacturing process and consequently lowering GHG emissions.
  • Reduced Raw Material Usage: Using more recycled glass decreases the need for raw materials like sand, soda ash, and limestone, reducing GHG emissions related to using batch materials while also conserving natural resources and reducing the environmental impact of mining and transportation.
  • Lower Carbon Footprint: Using recycled glass lowers the overall carbon footprint of glass production, as energy savings and reduced use of raw materials translate directly into fewer carbon emissions.
  • Waste Reduction: Incorporating recycled glass into our manufacturing process helps divert glass waste from landfills, promoting a circular economy.
  • Operational Efficiency: Using recycled glass can enhance operational efficiency by reducing wear and tear on furnaces and other equipment.

This alignment ensures that we remain competitive and continue to lead the industry in sustainability.

Positive Impact on Our Customers

Our updated goals will also positively impact our customers. By aligning our ambitions with those of our customers, we demonstrate our commitment to supporting their sustainability objectives.

“O-I is already leading the glass industry in delivering reductions of GHG emissions. Now, our more ambitious GHG, cullet and renewable electricity goals send a strong signal that we have no intention of slowing down,” says Pump.

Glass is 100% recyclable and endlessly recyclable. It does not cause end-of-life waste issues. Time and time again, glass proves it is the ideal packaging material to support a circular economy and the health of Earth’s people. As a long-time leader in glass packaging, we see it as our responsibility to innovate our manufacturing process to support this material’s circularity. Our ability to outpace and accomplish our previous goals and establish these updated goals is a testament to our mindset and sustainability vision.

Our commitment to water extends beyond World Water Day as a key part of our Foundation’s environmental pillar. We partner with experts and environmental groups nationwide to support access to safe, abundant water and promote responsible water use. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation partners that steward this work include:

  • Alliance for the Great Lakes
  • Alliance for Water Efficiency
  • National Recreation and Park Association
  • National Association of Conservation Districts
  • The Everglades Foundation
  • North Shore Land Alliance
  • Ocean Research & Conservation Alliance
  • Restore America’s Estuaries
  • Tampa Bay Watch
  • The Nature Conservancy

In addition to our Foundation water partners, ScottsMiracle-Gro recently became a member of the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance, reinforcing our dedication to conserving water while maintaining beneficial living landscapes.

Our water commitment extends to consumers as our research & development teams enhance and promote turf, soil, fertilizer, plant food and application products that minimize water use and quality impacts. Examples range from water maximizer and moisture control products to drought-tolerant groundcovers and precision applicators to prevent overuse of fertilizer products. Other examples include reformulations, such as increased use of slow-release nitrogen and the removal of phosphorus to mitigate algal blooms, to alternatives to traditional turfgrass, such as drought-tolerant clover lawns.

Through consumer education, we teach homeowners about the benefits of green spaces, how to do more with less water and how to re-imagine yards as water-wise landscapes.

On World Water Day, and every day, we believe it’s vital to protect one of our planet’s most precious resources.
