  • Lineworkers are helping build a smarter, stronger grid
  • Duke Energy lineworkers restored more than 3.1 million customer outages after Hurricane Helene

Charlotte, N.C., April 18, 2025 /3BL/ – On April 18, Duke Energy celebrates National Lineworker Appreciation Day – a day to recognize the service, commitment and sacrifices of lineworkers, team members who are critical to ensuring customers have access to safe and reliable electricity.

Why it matters: Lineworkers provide an invaluable service to communities. Among the first to respond after storms to help ensure public safety, they frequently work in challenging conditions including extreme weather and heights to restore power and keep the lights on.

Lineworkers support the growth of industries and businesses in Duke Energy’s service areas across the Carolinas, Florida and the Midwest by helping build and expand power infrastructure. Line technicians install new power lines, transformers and other equipment to reliably accommodate growth. This work is increasingly important as communities continue to grow and new and existing businesses expand.

A historic year: Hurricane Helene (Sept. 26, 2024) was one of the most impactful storms in Duke Energy’s history, requiring an unprecedented response. Duke Energy lineworkers – many of whom were personally impacted by the storm – restored more than 3.1 million customer outages in the Carolinas, Florida and Midwest after Helene hit.

By the numbers

  • In the Carolinas, Hurricane Helene response involved 23,000 field personnel from more than 19 states and Canada.
  • Lineworkers replaced 14,000 power poles and 9 million feet of wire as part of the restoration.
  • In total, more than 10,000 Duke Energy and contract lineworkers, including substation and relay technicians, make up Duke Energy’s lineworker team. Substation technicians manage energy distribution at substations, while relay technicians test electrical equipment to ensure reliable power distribution.
  • Since 2020, the Duke Energy Foundation has committed more than $3.3 million in grant funding to support lineworker programs and participants.

A fast-growing occupation: The demand for lineworkers continues to grow as Duke Energy engages in more grid and infrastructure improvement projects. The company works with and recruits from 22 community college lineworker training programs throughout its service areas that have lineworker training programs.

What they’re saying

Scott Batson, senior vice president and chief power grid officer for Duke Energy: “Our customers live and work in some of the most vibrant, fastest-growing areas of the country. Duke Energy can efficiently meet current and future energy needs in large part due to our trusted line teams’ commitment to safety and excellence, and we value their work immensely.”

Suzy Macke, trouble technician lineworker, Duke Energy (Florida): “The feeling of restoring power to communities who have been severely impacted by storms and storm damage is like nothing else you will ever experience in a job. Helping customers in their time of need and seeing the happiness it brings them gives lineworkers a sense of purpose and fulfillment, and we truly love our work.”

Chase Nickell, journeyman lineworker, Duke Energy (Indiana): “It’s a rewarding job and a purposeful job when you can get the lights back on for customers. My kids don’t always want me to leave, but when people are out of power, they understand, and they are proud of their dad.”

Alex Downton, journeyman lineworker, Duke Energy (Kentucky and Ohio): “Lineworkers are like a family, and I love the people that I work with. I believe our trust and respect for one another directly reflects our success in providing safe and reliable power. We hold each other accountable and ensure everyone gets home safe when the work is finished.”

Harrison Cochran, apprentice lineworker, Duke Energy (North Carolina): “Working for Duke Energy is really rewarding and has given my colleagues and I so much gratitude to be able to help our customers and get the power back on. Our Greensboro-based line team is proud to always be willing to sacrifice time whenever needed, whether it’s getting the power back on for our customers or taking time to teach the apprentices essential skills that are important to have as we continue to build a stronger grid.”

Rikki Terry, journeyman lineworker, Duke Energy (South Carolina): “Besides safety, there is nothing that takes priority over getting the lights back on. We are fortunate to have a close team of colleagues committed to our customers and to each other, and we feel accomplished when we can make our communities better and make the grid stronger for the future.”

Q: What impact do you hope this work will have?

Accelera, the zero-emissions business segment of Cummins Inc., opened its new electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, in October 2024.

Spanning 24,000 square meters (~260,000 square feet), the facility marks a €50 million investment and is one of the world’s largest dedicated to electrolyzer production. With an initial production capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers annually, the plant is designed to scale beyond 1 gigawatt (GW) as demand grows. The facility currently employs around 150 highly skilled workers, with the potential to reach 200 as operations ramp up.

In line with Accelera’s commitment to sustainability, the facility integrates 3,000 rooftop solar panels, a geothermal heating and cooling system, and rainwater harvesting, enabling up to 70% of its energy needs to be met on-site. This plant plays an important role in advancing Europe’s green hydrogen production.

Direct Relief today announced a $2.7 million initiative to enhance healthcare access and bolster recovery efforts for Los Angeles communities severely impacted by recent wildfires.

Funds for this critical initiative were raised in part by MusiCares during the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards® telecast in February.

Immediate Response and Expanded Healthcare

The wildfires caused significant disruptions, leading to widespread evacuations and severely straining healthcare infrastructure across the region. Thousands of residents, particularly those uninsured or underinsured, face increased health challenges due to disruptions in housing, nutrition, and essential community services.

The initiative will support 15 community health centers and charitable clinics throughout Los Angeles, enabling them to:

  • Expand healthcare services and extend operating hours to meet heightened demand.
  • Provide critical care for chronic illnesses, mental health, and respiratory conditions exacerbated by wildfire smoke.
  • Deliver preventive care and educational outreach in neighborhoods frequently underserved by traditional healthcare systems.
  • Address housing instability, food insecurity, and emotional trauma recovery.

Comprehensive Support for Long-term Recovery

“Recovery from wildfires involves more than rebuilding physical infrastructure—it requires addressing complex social challenges such as housing instability, food insecurity, and healthcare disparities,” said Dr. Byron Scott, CEO at Direct Relief. “Community health centers and free and charitable clinics serve as vital anchors, providing not just medical care but comprehensive support including mental health counseling, housing assistance, and nutritional services. MusiCares’ generous funding will empower safety-net providers to continue delivering the holistic care that Los Angeles communities urgently need.”

Healthcare providers serving vulnerable populations have seen a dramatic surge in demand following wildfire-related displacement and health issues intensified by smoke exposure. This initiative specifically targets the health inequities amplified by the disaster, enhancing care for chronic conditions, mental health concerns, and respiratory health.

“As a community-focused health care leader, AltaMed understands that in times of crisis, it is vital to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations. We quickly mobilized to offer relief to individuals at the Pasadena evacuation center, providing medical care, behavioral health services, and social service support,” said Sharlene Risdon Jackson, Vice President of the AltaMed Foundation.

“As well as providing direct care, our role is to foster resilience and recovery within our community following disasters like the Eaton Fire, which present long-term environmental and social challenges. Partners like Direct Relief ensure that we can carry out this essential work. Direct Relief’s unwavering commitment and shared vision are crucial for rebuilding stronger, healthier communities.”

Strengthening Community Resilience

Beyond medical care, the grants will also help health centers and clinics provide crucial social support addressing housing instability, nutrition challenges, and emotional recovery from disaster-related trauma.

“Community health centers provided critical services to their communities throughout the devastating wildfires. Health center workers, despite being directly impacted by the wildfires, continued to serve others during the emergency,” said Louise McCarthy, President & CEO of Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County. “Direct Relief has been a vital partner in emergency response. This grant will help bring financial relief to health care workers who continue to recover from the wildfires’ devastating impact.”

Direct Relief’s Response to Date

Direct Relief mobilized within hours after the fires erupted on January 7, providing critical support within hours. Since then, Direct Relief has assisted over 60 organizations across Los Angeles County with more than $7.5 million in medical aid and grants, including the funds announced today.
