AEG hosted an employee event Beyond the Beats: API Leaders in the Music Industry, with two influential figures in music — Marisa Pizarro and DJ Flict — to educate employees about the need for more Asian Pacific Islander (API) representation in the music industry.

Pizarro is one of the highest-ranked Filipina women in the music industry and a Partner & Manager at MWA Music and Beatclub. DJ Flict, a Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum record producer, songwriter, and artist who has collaborated with global names including Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Rebelution, Meghan Trainor, and Fifth Harmony.

The event was hosted by the company’s employee network group API Desi@AEG in celebration of API Desi Heritage Month.

The discussion, which took place inside Coke Studios at Crypto.com Arena at L.A. LIVE on May 7, 2025, showcased how the panelists’ cultural identities, professional experiences, and creative vision have shaped their successful careers and helped pave the way for greater API representation in the industry.

“Both Marissa and DJ Flict have played key roles in shaping the careers of top-music industry talent and continue to break barriers in an industry where API representation remains limited at the executive level,” said Leah Domantay, DEI Program Manager, AEG. “We were thrilled to have them partner with us on this empowering event, which not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired meaningful dialogue about representation within music and beyond.”

Following the interview, AEG employees networked with local API-owned businesses, including sushi handrolls from Roll Me Up and artisan snacks from Tochi Snacks, uplifting local business owners.

May 16, 2025 /3BL/ – Action Against Hunger clinics for treating malnourished children in Afghanistan, which were previously forced to close due to cuts in U.S. funding, have now reopened with support from the European Union (EU).

Since March, staff at Action Against Hunger’s Therapeutic Feeding Units (TFUs) in Kabul and Badakhshan have faced the heartbreaking task of turning away children in need of lifesaving care, following the sudden withdrawal of U.S. funding that led to the closure of the units. Upon the arrival of EU support, the Kabul TFU reopened on May 11th, admitting 15 children for treatment, and the Badakhshan TFU reopened May 12th, admitting 12 children.

“The European Union has been supporting Action Against Hunger with five therapeutic feeding units across the country”, explains Cobi Rietveld, Action Against Hunger Country Director in Afghanistan. “As of this month, the EU has also stepped in to support the two TFUs that were closed due to cuts in US funding. With this support, we are able to save the lives of children in critical condition.”

Malnourished children who receive treatment at TFUs are so unwell that their risk of dying is 12 times higher than that of healthy children. The impact of the centers’ closure was severe: last year alone, these two clinics provided specialized treatment to more than 1,000 children. The health system in Afghanistan is near collapse, so malnutrition treatments are not readily available in the country despite being sorely needed.

“Additionally, our dedicated health staff at the TFUs, who would otherwise face unemployment in the current challenging economic situation, can continue their vital work,” said Rietveld. The job losses would have disproportionately impacted women, who make up 68% of staff at Action Against Hunger’s medical facilities. Wazhma N., a nurse on the TFU team in Kabul, shares how crucial the facility is for female medical staff: “For many of us, the TFU is more than just a workplace — it’s the only place where we, as women, can serve as medical professionals. Its reopening brings immense relief, not only to us but to the patients who desperately need care.”

Although the crucial support of the EU will allow these two TFUs to resume services for several months, continued support is needed. Action Against Hunger is actively seeking further funding to ensure these essential services can be sustained. “We hold onto hope that this lifeline won’t be temporary but will remain open for good,” says Wazhma.

Since the halting of US funding, more than 396 nutrition sites have closed across the country, as well as more than 400 health facilities. International agencies predict a shortage of essential medicines in the coming months, as stockpiles put in place before the sudden funding cuts begin to dry out.

Afghanistan is among the 15 countries with the highest burden of acute malnutrition, with at least 3 million children under five requiring lifesaving nutrition treatment annually — a figure that rose to 3.5 million in 2025. Increased support for nutrition services is urgently needed in Afghanistan.

Our St. Maries, Idaho facility’s electrician apprenticeship program consists of a combination of online/classroom coursework and practical experience. Electrician apprentices must accrue 8,000 hours of on-the-job work experience and are required to be enrolled in an accredited electrician apprenticeship school for their classroom training. For our program, apprentices can partner with either North Idaho College or the College of Southern Idaho.

Candidates take an average of four years to complete the eight levels of the electrician apprenticeship. Each of those four years requires 144 hours of instruction, for a total of 576 hours. The schooling focuses on electrical codes, wiring, finish work, troubleshooting, motor installation and controls. Our apprentices also enroll in Programmable Logic Controller classes.

Electricians at St. Maries perform integral tasks in our wood products operations. Properly working electrical tools, wiring, fuses, receptacles, circuits, and motors, to list only a few items, are a vital part of a mill running efficiently. First and foremost, the electricians are responsible for complying with all Occupational Safety and Health Act safety protocols and to work in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Fire Protection Association and special local regulations. For example, lock out/tag out systems are a primary mill safety system that electricians must install, maintain, and repair and are critical for all workers at the mill. Everyday tasks can also include rough-in wiring for switches, receptacles, circuits, motors, and fuses; preparing sketches or following blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes; diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing all types of malfunctioning electrical systems; and providing input to management for capital planning on longevity of electrical systems.

At the end of 2024, we had eight electrician apprentices at various stages of training at our St. Maries, Idaho lumber and plywood facility. The program offers Team Members a way to acquire skills and certification in a trade that is in high demand in our industry today, and in turn provides our company with a consistent source of skilled labor talent. Many of the Team Members who have participated in apprenticeships have now successfully completed the program and are currently working as fully qualified electricians at our facilities. Further, once an apprenticeship is completed the apprentice can take the journeyman state test to get their journeyman card. We have had eight apprentices move on to journeyman status after their program was completed over the last five years.
