Gen Blog | People & Impact

For eight years, we have partnered with Planet Water Foundation to help bring clean water to India’s rural population. Employee volunteers from our office in Pune have joined Planet Water staff each year on World Water Day to build AquaTowers in rural schools, not only expanding access to safe water for drinking and sanitation but also providing hygiene education for the wider community.

These efforts are part of our company-wide culture of giving, which empowers our teams to use their skills, time and passions to make an impact in their local communities. Confronting India’s growing water scarcity crisis is important to our team members in India.

The Ministry of Water Resources found that the country’s average water availability per capita qualifies the region as “water-stressed,” and even in communities that have regular access to water, it isn’t always safe to drink. Yale University’s 2024 Unsafe Drinking Water Index ranked India 144th out of 180 countries, placing people of all ages at greater risk of waterborne diseases that can cause health problems, financial hardship due to missed work and gaps in education due to missed school.

At Gen, we’re doing our part to change that. Since the start of our partnership with Planet Water, our work has:

  • Provided clean, safe water to more than 15,000 people in rural India;
  • Constructed eight AquaTowers and deployed accompanying hygiene education programming; and
  • Implemented 13 AquaHome systems to provide clean water and lighting into homes for the first time.

Bringing Clean Water to Our Communities

Rural regions in India are at an increased risk of water scarcity. Villagers must travel long distances to collect water from far-away access points, a responsibility that often falls on women and children. Planet Water’s AquaTower installations significantly reduce that burden, bringing water access to the center of the community.

The AquaTower is a water filtration system capable of producing 1,000 liters (~265 gallons) of clean drinking water per hour and functions as a handwashing station for students. The system is also open to the wider community, expanding access to health and hygiene resources.

This year’s build took place on March 26 at the ZPPS Valti school in Pune, which serves 116 elementary and middle-grade students in a rural community of 3,000 people. Eleven volunteers from our office in Pune joined the effort this year, further demonstrating our commitment to supporting the communities where we work and live.

“The families in our village get water from the well even if it is not safe for drinking,” said Santoshi Purushottam Sutar, a teacher at the ZPPS Valti school. “Now, we would not worry anymore about where to get clean water for our students because Gen built an AquaTower in our school.”

Improving Hygiene Community-Wide

When clean water is scarce, residents are forced to drink contaminated water, which can carry diseases and lead to frequent illness. Students and their families who are sick often miss school and work and incur higher healthcare costs. The AquaTower not only reduces the spread of disease but also helps students attend school more regularly, supporting the overall growth of the community.

This year’s project is one of dozens of similar initiatives Planet Water organized for this year’s World Water Day, all in support of progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 of achieving water and sanitation for all by 2030. The organization has reached more than 4.5 million people in 31 countries since 2009.

Our work with Planet Water Foundation is part of our efforts to manage our environmental impacts and empower our employees to care for the environment. You can read more about our environmental stewardship efforts in our Social Impact Report.

NEW YORK, April 25, 2025 /3BL/ – The latest animal in LG Electronics USA’s “Endangered Species Awareness” Series – the West Indian Manatee – was revealed during Earth Week 2025. A warm-water marine mammal native to the Gulf Coast, the West Indian Manatee is now showcased in stunning 3D video on LG’s Times Square billboard in New York City. The display brings these gentle creatures, selected by community vote, to life through a vibrant anamorphic presentation, highlighting their beauty and the urgent need to protect their habitats.

Launched in 2024 with the National Wildlife Federation, the series celebrates vulnerable wildlife from around the world while emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship. The initiative complements LG’s partnership with NBC’s The Americas, a 10-part nature documentary exploring the majestic wildlife and ecosystems of North and South America, now airing Sundays at 8/7c on NBC and streaming next day on Peacock.

The West Indian Manatee is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and is protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. These animals rely on warm coastal waters and healthy seagrass beds for survival, yet they remain vulnerable due to factors such as pollution, habitat degradation, and other disruptions to their ecosystem. Previous species featured in LG’s awareness series have included the snow leopard, bald eagle, sea lion, red wolf and monarch butterfly.

“At LG, we believe technology can be a powerful tool to inspire action and drive positive change. Through our Endangered Species Awareness Series, we aim to celebrate the beauty of vulnerable wildlife while raising awareness about the urgent need for conservation,” said Jeannie Lee, director of corporate marketing at LG Electronics USA. “The West Indian Manatee represents the delicate balance of ecosystems that must be protected, and we’re proud to use our platform to bring attention to their plight.”

As part of its ongoing partnership with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), LG has launched an educational initiative aimed at engaging K-12 students in conservation efforts. The program provides interactive content that underscores the critical role at-risk and endangered species play in ecosystems, along with actionable steps to protect biodiversity and habitat. Free, standards-aligned resources are available online for educators and students.

Additionally, NWF has published a blog featuring insights into the West Indian Manatee, including unique facts about the species’ behavior and ecological significance. Students and nature enthusiasts can also access an interactive quiz designed to deepen understanding of the manatee’s role in marine ecosystems.

LG’s support for sustainability extends beyond the classroom through NWF’s EcoSchools U.S. and EcoLeaders programs, which equip educators, students, and communities with tools to drive meaningful environmental action. To further these efforts, LG has pledged $165,000 to-date to NWF to inspire future conservationists and amplify initiatives protecting wildlife and wild places.

In conjunction with the campaign, LG invites audiences to explore the watch kit for The Americas: The Gulf Coast, featuring the West Indian Manatee. The kit includes activities, animal facts and practical ways to contribute to conservation efforts.

“The National Wildlife Federation is focused on protecting species like the West Indian Manatee, whose survival depends on healthy coastal habitats and clean waterways,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “Collaborations like this support efforts to safeguard critical ecosystems, educate communities about biodiversity, and advance conservation solutions that address threats to wildlife and their habitat.”

Earth Day is a reminder of the responsibility we all share – as individuals, as companies, and as an industry – to drive progress toward a more sustainable energy future.

This Earth Day, I am proud to reflect on the incredible work our teams across Baker Hughes are doing to support a more sustainable energy future.

This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” speaks to both our responsibility and our opportunity – to innovate, to lead with accountability, and to drive meaningful change in how energy is produced and consumed.

From pioneering low-carbon technologies to supporting communities through volunteerism and environmental initiatives, our people are taking action that matters.

As a company, we are working to reduce our own footprint, operate more efficiently, and innovate with purpose. One way our employees do this is through our Carbon Out program, which focuses on smart energy choices to help embed sustainability and cut emissions across our operations.

Some of the highlights of the program include:

  • In Saudi Arabia, we replaced diesel generators with a grid connection – cutting out 365,000 gallons of fuel use.
  • In Italy, we launched a shuttle bus service to reduce commuting emissions (and give people a safe ride home).
  • In the Netherlands, we used mobile recompression to avoid flaring gas – cutting vented emissions by 94%.
  • In Louisiana, one site joined a renewable energy program and reduced total emissions by 89%.
  • In Suzhou, China, our team added solar panels that now power over a third of one of our sites.

Through programs like Carbon Out, we are embedding sustainability in our operations and accelerating progress toward a lower-emissions future.

We know that delivering progress at scale takes more than intention – it takes accountability. Stay tuned for the release of our Corporate Sustainability Report later this month which will detail the actions we take to support people, planet, and our principles.

In celebration of Earth Month, AEG’s LA Galaxy Foundation joined forces with Freeway Insurance and Garden School Foundation to replant and expand the gardens at Annalee Avenue Elementary School in Carson, CA, as part of the MLS (Major League Soccer) WORKS Greener Goals Week of Service, which ran from April 14 – 22, 2025.

On April 22, 2025, LA Galaxy’s players JT Marcinkowski and Tucker Lepley, along with the club’s mascot Cozmo, employee volunteers from its front office, employees from AEG, and LA Galaxy fans, came together to plant and refurbish the school’s garden. Together, they constructed new ADA-compliant garden beds, removed weeds, mulched, laid down fresh soil, and planted a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers—transforming the outdoor space into a more accessible and educational garden for students. The produce harvested from Annalee Elementary School’s raised beds will be used in healthy cooking classes put on by Garden School Foundation. Additionally, several times a year, community members are invited to come out to also reap the bounty of a harvest.

“The LA Galaxy is dedicated to fostering a sense of community and environmental responsibility,” said Felicia Hano, Community Relations Coordinator, LA Galaxy Foundation. “By working alongside our partners and volunteers to enhance the gardens at Annalee Elementary, we’re giving students a lasting space to learn about sustainability and the importance of protecting our planet.”
