Key Points

  • Marathon Petroleum Corporation set a company record for recognition at this year’s American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers safety awards.
  • For the first time in the same year, three of its refineries earned the highest safety honor, which reflects performance in the top 1% of the industry.
  • Three other Marathon refineries were also recognized for their 2024 safety performance, and the company was highlighted for a technical innovation.

May 30, 2025 /3BL/ – Only four facilities earned the highest honor at this year’s American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) safety awards, and three of them are from Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC). The company’s refineries in Detroit, Michigan; El Paso, Texas; and Kenai, Alaska, received the Distinguished Safety Award (DSA), which is reserved for facilities with performance in the top 1% of the industry.

“These awards reflect how strongly our facilities are adhering to company tenets that promote an incident-free workplace,” said MPC Refining Personal Safety & Security Senior Director Fritz Kin. “Safe and reliable operations come only by focusing daily on protecting our people and the communities where we operate.”

The DSA recognized the sites for a sustained, exemplary level of safety performance, program innovation and safety leadership throughout 2024. The winners were selected from a pool of finalists after site representatives went through face-to-face interviews with a committee of industry safety experts.

In addition to the DSA winners, MPC’s Catlettsburg, Kentucky, refinery won AFPM’s Elite Silver Award for safety performance in the top 10% of the industry. Also, MPC’s Robinson, Illinois, and Salt Lake City, Utah, refineries received the Safety Achievement Award for maintaining exemplary safety standards. Additionally, MPC’s Refining Safety and Refining IT groups earned an Honorable Mention Award for innovation that recognized deployment of a chatbot tool to enhance safety.

“We are extremely proud of our teams because we know the focus that’s required to reach this level of excellence and set yourself apart from industry peers,” said MPC Refining Process Safety Management Senior Director Marcus Garvin. “Our employees truly put our core value of safety and environmental stewardship into action through consistent practices that reinforce safe work execution.”

AFPM’s awards reflect both personal safety performance and process safety performance. Among other award criteria, eligible facilities must not have a single recordable injury involving a life-critical task – an activity with the potential to cause serious harm to individuals; severe equipment damage; or a negative environmental impact.

The Detroit refinery’s DSA is its first since winning a 2010 and 2008 DSA. This is the first year the El Paso and Kenai refineries have earned the DSA. At last year’s awards, the El Paso refinery received a 2023 Elite Platinum Award, AFPM’s second highest honor, and the Kenai refinery earned a 2023 Elite Silver Award.

A $150,000 gift from KeyBank Foundation will support teen mental health and wellness initiatives over the next three years as part of Family Services’ Youth Programming. Funds will be used to develop innovative, enhanced after-school programming aimed at fostering healthy connections and preventing behavioral health challenges.

  • Meeting the changing needs of youth. Through partnership with KeyBank, Family Services is adapting their approach to youth programming in order to deepen impact and ensure that teens have the support they need to navigate today’s challenges and help repair the social emotional gap post-Covid.

  • Creative programming. Services will include group activities that increase protective factors, build resilience and encourage positive behavioral health as well as access to individual and family therapy services as needed.

  • Deepening Impact for Poughkeepsie Youth. Family Services will reach more than 100 youth, ages 11 to 18, in the inaugural year through after school, group-based activities at the Family Partnership Center as well as individual and family mental health services.

  • Dedicated staffing. A full-time Youth Social Worker, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, and dedicated community partners will offer engaging and enriching group activities at a supportive ratio of 1 adult to 10 youth.

  • Amplifying reach. The Youth Social Worker will offer support to other community youth serving organizations, delivering mental health and social emotional programming to their participants, expanding the reach and impact of the program.

“Everyone needs a little help from time to time, especially the youth in our communities,” said John Manginelli, Hudson Valley/Metro NY President, KeyBank. “To support this program with Family Services, which provides teens with the resources they need in a way they will be receptive to receiving them, is a great way to promote KeyBank’s commitment to help people live well and thrive.”

“KeyBank Foundation is committed to supporting organizations and programs that prepare individuals for thriving futures. Family Services’ enhanced youth programming does just this. It is a transformative approach to teen behavioral health that helps kids realize their promise and aligns perfectly with our philanthropic priorities of neighbors, education and workforce,” said Eric Fiala, CEO, KeyBank Foundation.

According to a 2023 article by the US Center for Disease Control, in the 10 years leading up to the pandemic, feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness in young people—as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors—increased approximately 40% percent. In the Hudson Valley, the percentage of children with serious emotional disability grew from 15% to 38%.

Additionally, the City of Poughkeepsie continues to face gun violence; in 2024,16 people were shot, 6 of whom were teenagers. When youth face exposure to trauma such as community violence and other adverse childhood experiences, it can lead to significant behavioral health needs, poor social outcomes, health disparities and educational deficiencies if left unaddressed.

“At Family Services our north star is ensuring everyone has the right to thrive. For the youth we serve, that includes meeting increasing behavioral health needs,” said Leah Feldman, CEO, Family Services. “We’re grateful for KeyBank’s continued support and commitment to help us deliver on our reimagined model for improving mental health outcomes for teens so they can reach their fullest potential.”

Family Services is planning to welcome their first participants in the summer of 2025.

Recruitment for the new program will occur in several ways, including outreach to youth and parents involved in Family Services’ Teen Resource Activity Center programming, referrals from Poughkeepsie City School District, referrals from Family Services partner agencies within the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet and community outreach.

For more information, visit the Family Services website at http://familyservicesny.org or call 845-452-1110 x3192.

Strong leadership fuels organizational success. Recognizing the importance of cultivating leadership talent from within, PotlatchDeltic launched the Emerging Leaders Academy in 2024. Designed in collaboration with the University of Arkansas, this six-month intensive program equips high-potential employees with the confidence, skills, and network they need to thrive in future leadership roles.

The academy’s structure emphasized both learning and application. Over six months, participants engaged in interactive virtual sessions, each focused on a critical leadership skill, such as navigating change, fostering emotional intelligence, delegating effectively and leading resilient teams. Each session challenged participants to apply concepts in real time through role play scenarios, then reflect on their experiences in small-group discussions.

To cap off the program, participants gathered for an immersive in-person session at the University of Arkansas, where they had an opportunity to interact directly with PotlatchDeltic’s executive team, including CEO Eric Cremers, who shared insights on resilience and decision-making, highlighting the challenges leaders face. The experience wasn’t just about learning general leadership principles, it was about preparing managers to lead with confidence in real-world scenarios impacting our business.

PotlatchDeltic selected 15 high-performing managers from each division of our business. These individuals, each managing at least one direct report, represented different locations and business units. Bringing together leaders from different backgrounds not only enriched discussions but also accelerated real-world application.

The impact of the Emerging Leaders Academy was immediate: one participant, who was promoted shortly after completing the program, was equipped with the skills, confidence, and network to succeed in his new role. Many attendees reported immediate application of skills, particularly in handling difficult conversations and navigating change. In addition to leadership skills, participants had a chance to build connections with other leaders in our company, exchange ideas and form lasting professional relationships. With these new connections and skills in place, the momentum for leadership growth continues to build.

Based on the program’s strong reception, PotlatchDeltic is set to launch a second cohort of the Emerging Leaders Academy in 2025, keeping the small-group format to promote deep engagement. By investing in structured, high-impact training like this, PotlatchDeltic is preparing individuals for leadership roles, which we believe is a fundamental part of building a stronger, more resilient company for the future.

This May, during Military Appreciation Month, U.S. Bank held several events to honor and recognize military and veteran customers, employees and community members.

A New Home
U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Stuart Fuke was given the keys to a new mortgage-free home May 7 in West Fargo, North Dakota. Fuke, who said he was inspired to join the military by his mother and other dedicated family members, started his service in Great Lakes, Illinois. The Hawaii native, who currently resides in San Diego, California, will continue to pursue a career in culinary arts following his move to the Fargo area.

“This house will actually help me start living life again,” said Fuke. “It’s a good push toward trying to heal again. I’m just honored that Freedom Alliance, U.S. Bank and Thomsen Homes were able to give me that feeling I’ve never had before.”

The life-changing gift is made possible through the bank’s Housing Opportunities after Military Engagement (H.O.M.E.) program, in conjunction with Freedom Alliance’s Heroes to Homeowners program. Including this donation, U.S. Bank has donated 31 homes valued over $8 million to military families in communities across the country since 2013.

Freedom Alliance provides mortgage-free homes to wounded combat veterans through its Heroes to Homeowners program.

Delivering care packages

Earlier this year, U.S. Bank employees in Minneapolis assembled care packages in partnership with the United Service Organizations (USO), a non-profit founded in 1941 to support members of the armed forces and their families, to be delivered to airmen at the Minot Air Force Base in Minot, North Dakota. The care packages were delivered to the Minot Air Force Base in May to honor and recognize the service and sacrifice these men and women make every day.

In addition to the care packages, U.S. Bank supported 50 expecting mothers by donating diapers and wipes during a baby shower event on base. U.S. Bank also supported military spouses by making paracord bracelets, which include a strong, durable cord that can be used for various purposes, that were gifted during a spouse appreciation event. The paracord bracelets were assembled by a group of U.S. Bank employees in Fargo.

A Gold Star moment

U.S. Bank recently donated new, payment-free vehicles to two Gold Star students at the Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky. Gold Star families are those who have lost an immediate family member in the line of duty while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Parker Madden, a Gold Star son, lost his father, U.S. Army Specialist Russell Madden, who was killed in action in Afghanistan from a rocket-propelled grenade attack on his convoy in 2010. Micaela Trimble, a Gold Star daughter, lost her father, U.S. Army Private First Class Chad Trimble, in 2008 also in Afghanistan. Parker Madden is a student at Western Kentucky University and Michaela Trimble is a recent graduate of Belmont University.

These donations are part of the Driven to Serve program, an initiative between Freedom Alliance and U.S. Bank that pairs available vehicles with military families and service members in need and demonstrates the commitment of each organization to support the nation’s heroes.

In addition to the vehicles, a group of U.S. Bank employees also partnered with the Freedom Alliance earlier this year to assemble care packages that will be given to other Gold Star students who, like Madden and Trimble, received scholarships from Freedom Alliance because of their parents’ sacrifice. The vehicles were donated May 13, which was also national Children of Fallen Patriots Day.

“I really feel like Freedom Alliance and U.S. Bank provided for me in a way that my dad wishes he could have provided for me,” said Trimble.

A new vehicle

U.S. Bank also provided a payment free vehicle to U.S. Army Sergeant John Moore, who grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. While serving in the Army, Moore was an Artillery Forward Observer. Moore was severely injured during his second deployment in Baghdad. After two years of recovery at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Moore now lives in Charlotte, Tennessee, with his wife and children.

This is the bank’s 91st payment free vehicle donation since 2018 and the 57th in partnership with Freedom Alliance.

“We are honored to support John, a true American hero whose courage and sacrifice inspire us all,” said Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon. “This donation is more than a gesture of gratitude—it’s a step toward restoring the independence and quality of life John fought to protect. Freedom Alliance is proud to support this remarkable family, and we are grateful to U.S. Bank for helping make this gift possible.”
