Alison Lewis, Kimberly-Clark’s chief growth officer, and Lori Shaffer, the company’s vice president of global nonwovens, are committed to driving positive change for women and girls around the world. In honor of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Alison and Lori about the power of embracing equity, steps that organizations can take to better support women in the workplace and at home, the women who inspire them, and what they hope for moving forward.

This is part 1 of a 2-part series – part 2 runs on March 7

Q: Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

AL: I grew up in a Canadian household where my parents and grandparents both believed I could achieve anything I wanted. As a child, I played with race car toys and hockey sticks. No one thought I should only play with dolls and pom-poms, and that was over 50 years ago!

Throughout my life, I’ve been surrounded by men who understood that women are just as important and as capable as them. I’m also a mother of three boys, and I know they’ve seen (and fully support) women’s equity and equality because it’s their norm.

I am where I am today in my career because of my former male managers who believed in me, lifted me up and gave me opportunities to grow. Some of my career choices have also been possible because my husband stayed home to care for our boys. Shared accountability between men and women is critical, whether it’s related to parenting, juggling dual careers, etc.

LS: I have three kids, including two daughters ages 12 and 5 – because of them, I’m driven to continuously work to break down barriers and make situations more equitable for women so they’ll have less of a battle in front of them when they grow up. It’s important to bring to light the challenges facing women, and that’s something I talk about often with my daughters.

Q: This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #EmbraceEquity. What comes to mind when you hear this? What’s the difference between equity and equality?

AL: Embracing equity is about valuing differences and understanding how those differences create a society that functions at its best. Countless studies show that societies that embrace equity have a greater chance of higher gross domestic product (GDP), productivity and general well-being. Equality implies similar treatment of all people, but equity recognizes each person’s different circumstances and provides them with what’s needed to succeed.

LS: Embracing equity means being willing to take the extra step to understand how needs may vary from one person to another to truly provide them with a level playing field in achieving their goals. For example, it may be that a stepping-stone for career success might involve taking on a role at some stage that requires travel.

While this role may be open to all, implying equality, it may present unique personal challenges for a single mom with small children. Understanding this and being willing to provide support – such as creative childcare solutions – takes more effort on behalf of the employer, but it creates equity by recognizing that each person may need something different to succeed.

Q: Can you tell us more about the social programs through which Kimberly-Clark is partnering with local nonprofits and global NGOs to advance gender equality around the world?

LS: Millions of women and girls are stigmatized and discriminated against simply because they menstruate, and many women and girls miss work and school when they’re on their periods. Kimberly-Clark’s Kotex® She Can Initiative works to ensure a woman’s period never stands in the way of her progress by fighting the barriers caused by period stigmas, promoting access to education, and helping open doors so women gain equal opportunity.

We’re partnering with NGOs around the world, including Plan International and Girl Up, to eliminate period stigma, deliver critical menstrual hygiene education, and uplift women and girls, and these efforts ultimately connect to our purpose of Better Care for a Better World. In partnership with Plan International, we reached 1.8 million individuals across eight countries in 2022 with our menstrual hygiene management programs. These programs, which took place in Brazil, Colombia, China, Nigeria, Vietnam, India, Peru and Guatemala, educated girls, boys, teachers, parents and community members.

Last year, our Kotex® Peru team partnered with Plan International to develop the ‘Normalicemos lo Normal’ (Let’s Normalize Normal) campaign, which aimed to normalize menstruation and combat misconceptions. This successful campaign included digital actions (social networks), billboards, radio and television interviews, press releases, videos, and a social experiment with a television spotlight, ultimately reaching thousands of people across the country with critical information about menstruation.

In 2022, we also launched a partnership with Girl Up in Chile and Argentina. Together, Girl Up and the Kimberly-Clark Foundation are providing leadership training and tools for girls to become gender equality advocates and activists for education around period poverty and period stigma. As part of this, we are actively engaged with the Girl Up Alumni Mentorship Program, where mentors (including several Kimberly-Clark employees) spend six months helping mentees advance their leadership skills along with their educational, career and personal goals – all while building a supportive and long-lasting connection.

In addition to the She Can Initiative, I love our partnership with HATCH NextGen where we sponsor girls in underprivileged areas of the U.S. so they can participate in a guided science, technology and math (STEM) program focused on addressing challenges in their respective communities. This year-long program includes monetary support as well as mentoring to ensure these girls have the resources required to be successful, giving them an opportunity to experience the possibilities of a career in STEM.

Q: How is Kimberly-Clark harnessing the power of data and technology to drive positive change for women and girls?

AL: The reach of many menstrual education programs is often limited due to cost or stigma. To help lower the barrier to access and reach more people, our Kotex® brand is leading the category in reinventing menstrual health education through a new educational gaming experience that I am so excited about!

Period Planet is a free, immersive adventure game where players demystify the menstrual cycle. The game helps users understand all things related to periods and learn about menstrual cycle misconceptions. Period Planet is an example of self-learning at its best and targets both boys and girls since boys have a key role to play in fighting the stigma. The gamified experience is designed to be engaging for teens today by leveraging popular game formats and incentives.

The game is digital, so users are able to play on their own time, relieving the burden of shame or embarrassment. In addition, the technology is low bandwidth, so the platform is widely accessible to users and doesn’t require a gaming system.

The program is also aligned to school curriculum content, and based on the initial soft launch in Australia, the response has been very positive. Period Planet is officially launching in Australia in March, and our Kotex® brand has plans for future launches in other regions as well.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 6, 2023 /3BL Media/ – With many of the world’s quick service restaurants pledging to be green by 2025 with improved packaging and recycling practices, Liquibox (now part of Sealed Air) met the need to develop a recycle-ready version of its well-known patented urn-liner product line.

The recycle-ready urn-liner is comprised of an all-polyethylene bag and adapter with a removable thermoplastic elastomer tube. The tube is easily separated from the bag’s adapter so the mono-material bag can be recycled. This innovation makes Liquibox urn-liners compatible with recycling streams and reduces its ecological footprint, while still ensuring reliable product protection.

The disposable urn-liners cover the inside of metal beverage urns and decanters. Each liner is equipped with a tube that feeds through the urn spigot keeping the liquid product from coming in contact with the urn or spigot, which provides a safe, better-tasting beverage for consumers and operational efficiencies for store operators. Liquibox urn-liners are the ideal solution to meet the heightened demand for sanitation standards by reducing bacteria in beverages such as iced tea, iced coffee, and other non-carbonated drinks by 99%.

“Liquibox has been helping restaurants improve food safety with its original patented urn-liners for over 20 years,” said Kevin Griffin, Liquibox Vice President of Sales North America. “With the new recycle-ready urn-liner, we aim to contribute to our company purpose of making our world better and to help customers get one step closer to reaching their sustainability goals.”

SAN FRANCISCO, AMSTERDAM, HONG KONG, March 6, 2023 /3BL Media/ – The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), as an impact-driven global convener of around half of the apparel and footwear industry, today launches its Decarbonization Guide for Members. The Guide is part of the SAC’s Decarbonization Program, launched last year, to drive science-based targets (SBTs) adoption and reduction in emissions across the textile and apparel industry. The Guide provides a six-step process by which organizations can commit and set SBTs and develop action plans to deliver individual targets.

Responsible for between two and eight percent of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the textile and apparel industry must ramp up its efforts on facilitating collective action across the industry, to deliver the 45 percent reduction needed by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C. As part of the guidance provided, organizations will need to obtain internal buy-in to commit to and set SBTs, and submit their targets for verification. Once approved, member organizations will be required by the SAC to communicate their targets within six months of approval, develop an action plan and start taking actions geared towards delivering on carbon reductions. The SAC will require its corporate members to set near-term emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science within 24 months and obtain the appropriate validation from SBTi or a third-party accredited organization.

Featuring comprehensive guidance and resources to help organizations set and achieve their SBTs in each step, the Guide forms part of the ongoing work between the SAC and its members, including best-practice sharing webinars and peer-to-peer learning sessions, in an effort to scale up collaborative solutions to address the climate crisis. Developed last year in collaboration with Michael Sadowski, one of the primary authors of the Apparel and Footwear Sector Science-Based Targets Guidance by the World Resources Institute (WRI) in 2019, the SAC has been working on refining the guidance and conducting peer-to-peer group meetings with members to understand their needs and expectations.

Amina Razvi, Chief Executive Officer at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, said: “Right now, the textile and apparel industry is not on track to hit net zero by 2050. We need urgent transformation and increased collaboration across the industry to tackle the worst impacts of climate change. The launch of our Decarbonization Guide is a major step in our efforts to create an aligned pathway for the industry to reduce GHG emissions. We believe through continued collaboration and partnership with organizations such as the Science Based Targets initiative, we can support our members to commit and set their science-based targets and work collectively to deliver on emissions reduction targets.”

Joyce Tsoi, Director of Collective Action Programs, at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, said: “Through the Decarbonization Program, we are enabling collaboration between brands and manufacturers to address one of the biggest challenges the industry faces: how to reach net zero. With the textile and apparel industry being so far away from reaching net zero by 2050, the need for urgent action has never been greater. This Guide is a critical marker on that journey and will empower member organizations to turn purpose into practice to deliver necessary impacts, starting from understanding and adopting targets in line with the best available science to developing action plans to take collective actions. 77% of our members participating in our decarbonization program told us that they want to share knowledge, resources and tools that are available to them to set science-based targets is their biggest priority. By giving the industry the guidance, tools and platform it needs to change, brands and manufacturers are equipped to tackle the urgent challenge of emission reductions and drive systemic change across the industry.”

Luiz Amaral, CEO of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), said: “When it comes to tackling the biggest problem the world has ever seen – climate change – we must draw on the power of collaboration, ambition and innovation. This new guidance is proof that the fashion industry is up to the challenge. It also provides a blueprint for other sector trade bodies to follow.

“To keep 1.5°C within reach, remain economically competitive and enable the transformation to a global net zero future, setting science-based targets is the crucial first step. I am looking forward to this collaboration driving countless companies to set ambitious climate goals and deliver tangible emission reductions in line with science.”

As part of its commitment to collaboration with stakeholders in the industry, the SAC is engaging with organizations such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on how it accelerates the SBT adoption and validation across the globe. Dedy Mahardika, SBT Engagement Manager for Southeast Asia and Oceania at CDP presented at the SAC Annual Meeting in Singapore last November on the status of SBT adoption and the SBT guidance alongside the SAC to encourage greater uptake.

As part of its strategic plan, the SAC has set an aspirational objective to mitigate climate change and build climate resilience in the consumer goods value chain by supporting its corporate members in achieving decarbonization.

About the Sustainable Apparel Coalition:
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is an independent and impact-creating organization that aims to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability based upon a joint approach for measuring, evaluating, and improving performance.

As a non-profit organization, it has members from across the apparel, footwear and textile sector, but exists independently outside any one company so that it can drive progress. The SAC’s collective action efforts bring more than 280 global brands, retailers, manufacturers, NGOs, academics and industry associations together. They represent about half of the apparel and footwear industry along the whole supply chain – from sustainability pioneers to organizations just getting started.

Before the SAC existed, companies worked in a siloed way, using their own programs and measurements that lacked standardization and an ability to drive collective action. In 2009, Walmart and Patagonia identified this as a serious problem. Joining forces, they brought together peers and competitors from across the sector, to develop a universal approach to measuring sustainability performance and founded the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.

About the Science Based Targets initiative
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. The SBTi’s goal is to accelerate companies across the world to support the global economy to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. www.sciencebasedtargets.org

LINCOLN, Neb. and TORONTO March 6, 2023 /3BL Media/ – TD Bank Group (TD) and the Arbor Day Foundation today announced the 2023 grant recipients of the TD Green Space Grants program. The program, funded by TD through the TD Ready Commitment and administered by Arbor Day, will provide a total of US $400,000 (approximately $536,000 CAD) to support 22 organizations that are helping to expand access to greenspace, proliferate the benefits of trees, and support environmental equity within their communities.

Historically, tree canopy and green space access have been inequitably distributed between affluent and economically disadvantaged communities. Studies have shown these disparities put lower-income citizens at an increased risk of developing heat-related illnesses and other undesirable health outcomes. With extreme heat waves becoming more frequent, vulnerable populations are in need of trees and green space to curb the impact of the urban heat island effect and increase climate resiliency throughout their neighborhoods.

“At TD, we believe in the importance of taking care of our planet for future generations” said Janice Farrell Jones, Senior Vice President – Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship, TD Bank Group. “That’s why we’re proud to continue our support for the Arbor Day Foundation to help grow and enhance green spaces in vulnerable communities. Through our commitment to help create more equitable access to green spaces, we’re supporting organizations that are working to help elevate the quality of the environment and help build strength and resiliency within the communities we serve. ”

“As we continue to experience these increasingly frequent and prolonged periods of extreme heat, planting trees to provide shade and cooling has become a necessity for our most vulnerable communities,” said Dan Lambe, Chief Executive at the Arbor Day Foundation. “Through the TD Green Space program, we are striving to address socio-environmental inequity in neighborhoods that have long been overlooked. Sufficient access to a healthy, inclusive environment is something everyone deserves to have, and we are thrilled to work with TD who is committed to this goal.”

The following 22 cities in the United States and Canada will each receive a TD Green Space Grant:

TD provides funding for these grants, which are awarded annually, and the Arbor Day Foundation administers the program. TD Green Space Grants are made through the TD Ready Commitment, the Bank’s corporate citizenship platform. Established in 2019, the platform has provided funding which has served 63 communities through 82 planting projects. These projects have collectively planted or distributed over 11,000 trees or shrubs and engaged nearly 4,000 community members.

This year, funding will be granted to 22 municipalities that are driving programs aligned to the theme TD Green Space: Using green infrastructure to cool vulnerable neighborhoods. To be eligible for a grant, qualified municipalities had to be located within Canada and the TD operating footprint in the United States. Priority was given to projects occurring in underserved areas of local communities.

CNH Industrial’s Asia Pacific Agriculture Brand and Commercial Services team, together with the Thailand Finance team have helped improve the safety and wellbeing of students at Wat Chatthong school in Ayutthaya, Thailand. They volunteered their time, donated school supplies, and made a financial contribution to assist with much-needed building work.

Wat Chatthong school educates more than 60 students and is located approximately 80 kilometers outside of Bangkok. The children, aged between four and 12, come from local farm worker families, including migrants from Laos and Myanmar.

The school’s picturesque location overlooks rice paddies. However, this comes at a price, with the school grounds subject to flooding each year during the monsoon period. In late 2022, the school suffered significant loss when above-average flooding damaged its cafeteria, kitchen and playground, and decimated the vegetable gardens.

The school already relied on donations of rice to feed the children during the day, and government contributions have been unable to cover the cost of the renovation work required to make a safer and more comfortable environment for the students.

When members of CNH Industrial’s Asia Pacific team gathered in Bangkok for a team meeting in late January, they decided to engage in a team building activity that would have a long-lasting impact for the local community — helping children in need.

An international team of 36 people, including Australian, Belgian, British, Chinese, French, Indian, Italian, Thai, and Turkish colleagues arrived at Wat Chatthong School, armed with gardening and painting equipment, and a stack of notebooks, pencils and other stationery.

One team set to work sanding and repainting two classrooms, while another cleared a patch of land, constructed raised garden beds, filled them with soil, and planted seeds, establishing what is hoped will be a productive kitchen garden, providing nutritious vegetables for the children’s lunches.

CNH Industrial’s Vice President of Brand and Commercial Services for the APAC region, Matthieu Sejourne, presented the school principal, Acting Sub Lt. Pongprapa Wasuwat, with a cheque to cover the cost of rebuilding the cafeteria and kitchen. This work will be carried out by professional tradespeople in late April 2023.

“Education is the key to providing opportunities for all people to contribute to the development of their country. As a company, we believe in the value of equal opportunity,” said Matthieu Sejourne.

“We especially want to assist the children of the farm workers who are the foundation of the industry in which we operate, and whose valuable work ensures there is food on all our tables.”

Mr Wasuwat expressed his gratitude saying, “Our students come from low-income families – the majority of whom are underprivileged. Most of their parents work in agriculture. On behalf of the teachers and students, I would like to thank CNH Industrial for your acknowledgment of the importance of education and your support for this small-scale school like ours.”

“Building intergenerational wealth is more than just a financial education course, it’s about knowing how to make your money work for you, and for many, that starts with entrepreneurship and investing in our communities,” says Ramona Ortega, founder of My Money My Future, who was recently featured in HBO’s Gaming Wall Street.

The Hub will also host an evening celebration featuring a live performance from LatinX pop diva San Cha, whose music was featured in the Showtime series Vida and Austin’s own Tequila Rock Revolution.

“We believe that business creation is one way to create ownership stake in this country. That is why it is important that our corporate partners and anchor institutions shows a commitment to support Latino entrepreneurship,” said Deldelp Medina, Executive Director of Black & Brown Founders.

DENVER, Colo., March 3, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Arrow Electronics executives from around the globe took a break from recent business strategy meetings to build 150 bikes for charity. The local employees then donated the finished bikes to second graders in schools that qualify for federal aid – and even helped some students ride for the first time.

“We believe in making a difference in the lives of many and giving back to our communities. Through our leadership team-building event, we did just that,” said Rick Marano, president of Arrow’s Americas components business.

The bike-building project was an initiative with Wish for Wheels, a Denver-based non-profit. Since 2004, they have distributed new bikes and helmets to 75,000 second-graders in underserved schools across the United States.

“Our mission to empower 2nd graders starts with amazing companies that show commitment to their communities by engaging their teams to build bikes and engage at the heart level by directly connecting with the kids they are supporting. Arrow truly understands community engagement through action,” said Brad Appel, CEO & Founder of Wish for Wheels.
