Hut Life

As part of our journey to build a ‘Culture of Connection’ that is more equitable, inclusive and where everyone feels like they belong, we are kicking off our “Slice of Life” employee spotlight series.

Through this new series, we will learn about our fellow Team Members unique backgrounds, life experiences, different cultures, and the interesting journey they’ve taken to get to Pizza Hut, allowing us to know a little bit more about those we work with.

Kicking off our series, we sat down with Trish Baney, director of training, who has been with Pizza Hut for more than 30 years.

Tell us about yourself – where are you from and what is your background/ethnicity/culture?
“I grew up in Nebraska, but I’m a city girl – not a farm girl. Although I did spend some time with my grandparents on their farm in Iowa. I loved growing up in the Mid-west, where deep seeded family values and strong work ethic are the foundation of all parts of life – including mine. I have been married to my husband Chad for 29 years and we have two sons, one granddaughter and three dogs. My Pizza Hut journey started more than 30 years ago where I started as a Team Member in a restaurant and have now worked my way up through the organization to our training team today. I have had the opportunity to work on the equity, franchise, licensee, and multi-brand sides of business. And I’ve met incredible people every step of the way.”

When you were younger, what did you want to be?
“A dancer. My mom was a dance teacher and had her own studio. I started dancing when I was three and being a dancer was at the top of my list until I was a teenager.”

Why do you do what you do?
“My passion is people. Invest in those around you and everyone is better for it. There is no greater value I can add than helping others become the best version of themselves. By doing that, each of those people also leave something with me to help me grow.”

What was a defining moment in your career journey?
“There have been quite a few, but I would have to say making the move from Nebraska to Dallas in 1996, when I was a restaurant general manager (RGM), was the first. Moving from a small market in my home state to one of the largest in a state where I knew no one, was terrifying. But the opportunities that came along with it, for me and my family, overshadowed the fear.”

What are three words that your family and close friends would use to describe you?
“Trustworthy, compassionate and genuine.”

What animal would you say matches your personality best?
“I’m going to go with a penguin because penguins have a strong sense of community, are kind, helpful and very loyal. Besides, I think they are adorable!”

What’s your favorite quote and why?
“There are a lot of great ones out there but hands down this one from Maya Angelou has stuck with me for decades: ‘I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will NEVER forget how you made them feel.’ This holds true in every aspect of my life – be that at home or work. I’m always aware of the impact your words and your actions have on others.”

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?
“Take care of yourself first. You can’t take care of anyone else until you focus on you.”

What do you tend to do on the weekends?
“I love to spend time with my family, especially my new granddaughter! My husband and I enjoy movies, trying new restaurants, catching a theatrical performance or, from August to January, taking in college football – Go Big Red!”

If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
“My grandparents – all of them. Each of them taught me something special about life and helped sculpt who I am. I was fortunate to have them all with me into my 40s and I would give anything to be able to have more conversations with them.”

What is one unique thing about yourself that most people don’t know?
“My grandpa was a Shriner clown – and I spent a lot of time at the circus as a child. I participated in parades, got to ride elephants and camels, and dressed up in fun costumes. Unfortunately, I did not pick up any ‘circus skills’ along the way.”

PHILADELPHIA, May 19, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Comcast Corporation announced a total award of more than $25 million to hundreds of community organizations to help provide the resources and support needed for building a stronger, more equitable workforce.

Furthering a deep and longstanding commitment to advancing equity and opportunity, Comcast’s funding will help provide skills building, job training and other career development offerings for the full spectrum of learners, from high school students to adults. Today’s announcement is part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to help advance digital equity and build a future of Unlimited Possibilities.

“When more people across our country are given the full set of tools and opportunity to secure good jobs, we change much more than just one person’s life. We create a butterfly effect that reaches across communities – and our entire economy,” said Dalila Wilson-Scott, EVP & Chief Diversity Officer for Comcast Corporation and President of the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation.

By investing in workforce training, skills building and job placement today, our work is helping to build lasting, generational wealth and achieve large-scale economic growth for all.

Currently, 92 percent of all jobs require digital skills but nearly one-third of U.S. workers lack basic digital skills, and overwhelmingly, communities of color and Americans earning lower incomes are most often those lacking the skillsets required to qualify for jobs and to grow careers. Through targeted workforce development, significant strides can be made toward closing the skills gap – and digital divide – while spurring critical job placement and increasing diversity and equity in the workforce.

“We can only successfully change the face of tech – and strengthen the future of our economy – if we successfully find ways to help every worker unlock his or her potential,” said Plinio Ayala, President & CEO of Per Scholas. “Comcast recognizes how critical this mission is, and by working together, we can create the opportunities that empower job seekers to become what they envision, to realize their every possibility, and succeed in the workforce of today – and tomorrow.”

Comcast’s grant to frontline, partner organizations will help increase college and career readiness, especially among underserved youth; connect workers to opportunities; provide upskilling for adult learners and those already in the workforce; and close the skills – particularly digital skills – gap. This funding will support programs and partnerships driving impact nationwide in 2023.

“To excel in the tech industry, it is not enough to simply have a degree,” noted Michel Ellison, CEO and Co-Founder of CodePath. “Graduates must navigate a complex, competitive industry, build a background of career-specific experience, and establish tech excellence. As leaders, it is incumbent on us to help guide our future tech talent through all of this and more. With partners like Comcast, we will successfully establish the connections and tools necessary for our future creators, problem solvers and innovators.”

Through intentional investment in organizations deeply rooted in local communities across the country, Comcast’s investment will drive change needed to achieve lasting, generational impact. Specifically, funding will go toward the following focus areas and more than 200 organizations, including:

Increasing College and Career-Readiness

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) – Comcast is supporting the Next Generation of Indigenous Coders program, which prepares students for computer science degrees and careers across all industries.Genesys Works – Funding will help enable the expansion of a program connecting underserved high school students to paid internships with major companies, reaching 1,900 students and more than 2,100 alumni. The Hidden Genius Project – With support from Comcast, Hidden Genius will engage 1,200 youth of color in programming and 200 high school students in an intensive immersion program, 98 percent of whom will graduate high school and 90 percent of whom will enroll in post-secondary education.

Building College to Career Opportunities

CodePath – Comcast is helping provide the tools and connections college computer science students need to unlock their greatest career potential, enabling CodePath to scale its work to serve 10,000 students per year — 70% of whom identify as Black, Latino/a, Indigenous, first generation, and/or low-income — at approximately 70 institutions of higher education.Reboot Representation Tech Coalition – Together with other companies, Comcast has set out to double the number of Black, Latina and Native American women receiving computing degrees by 2025 and increase their representation in the tech workforce.

Providing Training and Upskilling to Close the Skills Gap

Hispanic Federation – Through a dedicated partnership program, Comcast is supporting a network of 20 Digital Equity Centers at Latino-led and serving nonprofits across the country, which will provide 5,000+ participants with digital skills training and job placement assistance.National Urban League – Comcast’s support of the NUL’s Urban Tech Jobs program will provide unemployed and under-employed individuals with training for in-demand jobs in the tech sector, with a particular focus on middle-skills jobs in the IT sector.NPower – Comcast’s support will enable enrollment of 650 trainees in Regional Tech Fundamentals, a tech training and job placement program helping military veterans and underserved young adults move from unemployment to middle income careers.Per Scholas – Providing tuition-free training and hands-on professional experience to adult learners, Comcast’s funding will enable more than 10,000 adult learners to launch tech careers over the next three years.

May 20 has been designated World Bee Day by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development.

As a senior human resources manager, Gina Lees supports development and talent programs for supply chain associates. In her free time, Gina fills her garden with pollinator-friendly plants and flowers and has become an avid beekeeper.

“I had the opportunity to work with a stellar general manager who was a beekeeper, and he would share stories about the process, the science and the bees,” Gina recalls. “I was intrigued, and my husband was equally interested. We thought it would be a fun hobby we could do together. This is our 6th year as beekeepers, and we are far from experts. Each year we learn how to do something a bit better and take better care of our queens and their hives.”

Gina’s Top Tips for Success:

Bees are going to do what bees are going to do.
There is no one route to becoming a successful beekeeper. You can read a dozen beekeeping books, watch countless videos, talk to local apiary groups, etc., and you will learn many best practices to keep your bees healthy and thriving.
It’s called beekeeping for a reason. It is a hobby that is not continuously laborious but does consist of required activities that can be time consuming on an intermittent basis.
The cost to get started as a beekeeper will feel expensive due to purchasing bees, brood boxes, frames, equipment, apparel, etc., but it will pay dividends when you harvest the honey, aka liquid gold.

“Learning about and working with bees is so fascinating,” says Gina. “Bees are incredible: each bee has a specific job that contributes and is integral to the survival of the hive. Additionally, the energy and effort pay off when the honey is harvested. The honey is delicious, and we enjoy gifting it to friends and neighbors. This year, we learned to render beeswax from the capped comb we removed during harvesting.”

To get the supplies to start beekeeping, look no further than homedepot.com. For both aspiring beekeepers and those who want to support pollinators, learn more about the best plants to add to your landscape.

Pollinators are vital to local ecosystems, and The Home Depot is committed to promoting products that help protect them. Our growers have discontinued the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in our live goods since 2019, except where legally required.

Our greatest contribution

The climate crisis is one of the most defining issues of our time. Its global effects are far-reaching and impact both individuals and Essity’s business. As one of the world’s leading hygiene and health companies, we have the scale and reach to take action and contribute to collective transformation.

Biodiversity is crucial for the environment and human health and well-being. Our operations impact biodiversity in all parts of the value chain – particularly our activities related to sourcing of raw materials, green- house gas emissions, water consumption and effluent water, and also waste leakages, in particular plastic waste. Essity has ongoing initiatives and measures in all of these areas. As part of a major analysis of our impact on biodiversity, Essity integrated biodiversity into our overall risk management in 2021. We help our customers and consumers to make simple environmental choices, by communicating our environmental improvements in our own communication or through eco-labelling.

We are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air, land and water pollution, as well as water and plastic use, and waste. A central part of this is responsible forestry and procurement of fiber, reduced material use, sustainable consumption and circular solutions. These initiatives make a positive contribution to SDG 12 Responsible consumption and production, SDG 13 Climate action and SDG 15 Life on land.

Forest and fiber

Nature consideration and protection of biodiversity through responsible forestry is a priority for Essity. As a global purchaser of both fresh and recycled wood-based fiber materials, we are dependent on healthy and resilient forests. Our impact on forest biodiversity is primarily through use of wood-based fresh fiber. Responsible procurement and responsible forest management is an integral part of our fresh fiber procurement and is therefore central to Essity’s sustainability strategy.

Responsible fiber procurement

Our long-standing work with responsible fiber procurement is an important part of our sustainability strategy. We ensure responsible fiber procurement through certifications such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and can thereby prevent deforestation and promote biodiversity. Every FSC-certified forest must be annually assessed by the accredited body. Essity works with and encourages non-certified suppliers and forest owners to become certified. This secures our procurement of certified materials while increasing the availability of certified raw materials to other users. To further promote responsible forestry at the global, regional, and national levels, we support the further development of international certification systems. Essity participates in the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) together with other leading consumer goods companies in the Forest Positive Coalition of Action initiative to combat global forest degradation, deforestation and to preserve biodiversity.

Recycled and alternative materials

As a means of reducing fresh wood fiber purchases, we invest in new technology to increase the possibility of utilizing a larger share of recycled and alternative materials. One step in this direction was Essity’s investment in the production facility in Hondouville, France, in 2021. The investment made it possible to increase the recycling capacity for cartons and extract 98% of paper fiber in food and beverage cartons. We are also investing in alternative renewable fibers such as wheat straw, an agricultural by-product that often remains unused. Essity’s production facility in Mannheim, Germany, began producing tissue from wheat straw pulp in 2021, with the first products launched on the market in 2022 under the Zewa brand. This is the first production facility of its kind in Europe and the first plant in the world that uses wheat pulp on a large scale to produce tissue. The breakthrough innovation leads to increased circularity and reduced climate footprint.

Targets and transparency

In 2022, Essity was again recognized for the company’s leadership in sustainability by the non-profit environmental organization CDP.

Through CDP’s database, everyone can access information about how Essity works with fiber suppliers, industry organizations and other stakeholders, including non-profit organizations, to manage and promote sustainable forestry.

Each year, Essity reports according to the agreed targets in the Forest Positive Coalition of Action that is part of the CGF. This report is available on our website and is included in CGF’s annual aggregated report. Our joint targets form an essential part of our commitment together with other coalition members. Essity reports and follows up on these targets to drive a Forest Positive change within our own supply chains, our industry, and beyond.

Speed, Strategy, Sustainability, Opportunity… these words mark just a few of the first impressions from the Southwire team that recently attended the 2023 SABIC Berlin E-Prix, a race that marked Southwire’s first as the official wire and cable provider for the fastest growing motorsport on the planet.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship brings dramatic racing to the heart of some of the world’s most iconic cities, providing an elite motorsport platform for the world’s leading automotive manufacturers to accelerate electric vehicle innovation. It is the only sport certified Net Zero Carbon since its inception.

The German race was a doubleheader, held in Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport Circuit at the historic Tempelhofer Feld. The two races – Round 7 and 8 of the series’ Season 9 – marked the halfway point in this year’s calendar while delivering some of the most intense and spectacular racing to date. During Saturday’s race, the 22 drivers delivered a record-breaking 190 overtakes within 43 laps, taking the total tally over the weekend to 362 overtakes across 83 laps. The weekend also marked the European race debut of the series’ all-new GEN3 car – the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever made.

Fittingly, the first day of racing was Earth Day, where the championship further reiterated its commitment to sustainability through initiatives around planting and biodiversity that included racing drivers and team personnel.

“Two of the most exciting moments at this event were seeing the Southwire logo on the trackside for the first time and knowing that we had a cable application being used in a Formula E setting for the first time,” said Stephan Hardt, Southwire’s director of vertical strategy and execution. “And, this is just our first race. There is so much more opportunity and excitement to come for future races, especially our title sponsorship of the Portland race in June.”

During the weekend, Southwire team members were able to tour the venue, see the pit lane and team garages and experience all aspects of the race events – helping the company learn more about Formula E and build connections with other companies who are associated or partnered with the sport.

“Southwire is in so many different markets, from renewables to utility to building wire and more. We really are in the center of the electrical industry,” said Yuhsin Hawig, Southwire’s vice president of applications engineering. “With our relationship with Formula E, we are connecting to other businesses with a sustainability mindset and also learning from them.

The Berlin race also marked the first time a Southwire cable was specified and used for a Formula E application.

“We work with a company called VoltServer that has invented a new kind of power transmission called digital electricity, which we’ve used in other applications like telecom and intelligent buildings,” said Charles Hume, Southwire’s director of emerging technologies. “When we began the relationship with Formula E, VoltServer came to us and asked for a specialized cable to use in the Formula E setting. I’ve been into electric vehicles for a long time, so to see our technology being deployed here is a really great feeling.”

As Southwire’s title-sponsored race in Portland approaches on June 24, the excitement around the opportunities for advancement in emerging technologies connected to the sport is evident. The Southwire team is emerging from this experience with more knowledge, ideas and expectations for how the company can play a major role in the electrification of the future when it comes to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and beyond.

“As the world advances around electrification, we offer solutions today that can be used in this application, but there is also so much opportunity to innovate for the applications that are coming in the future,” said Bo Quick, Southwire’s vice president of Sustainability. “By connecting and learning alongside the other companies associated with Formula E, we can all innovate together.”

Fans jump out of their seats and roar as their beloved Philadelphia Union soccer club nets a goal at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. As fervent fans bask in their team’s success, they can also take pride in knowing each goal scored contributes to a greater cause. The Philadelphia Union and marquee partner Subaru of America plant 25 trees for each goal scored through a partnership with nonprofit One Tree Planted.

The Union’s on-field success in 2022 kept volunteers and community members busy: 79 goals, including a Major League Soccer record-tying 49 goals scored at home, translated into 1,975 trees planted in the greater Philadelphia community and throughout Pennsylvania. And that’s only the start of how these partners work together on environmental sustainability and community growth.

Subaru and the Philadelphia Union: A partnership for good

The tree planting project is just one of the many meaningful community initiatives born out of the partnership between Subaru and the Union. The automaker, based in Camden, New Jersey, and the Chester-based professional soccer team joined forces in 2020 to drive greater impact in the communities where they work.

“When we teamed up with the Philadelphia Union, our biggest priority was to engage with our shared communities in the greater Philadelphia area and support the causes that mean the most to them,” said Alan Bethke, senior vice president of marketing for Subaru of America. “Over three years of partnership, we’ve done just that.”

To maximize the partnership, the Union has embraced the Subaru Love Promise vision and poured energy into initiatives including sustainability, education, pediatric cancer awareness, pet adoption and more. Michelle Rosar, the Philadelphia Union’s vice president of partnership marketing, said success hinges on Subaru and the Union’s “open collaboration” and willingness to accept new challenges.

“There’s never been an idea that’s come across our desk that’s been too big or too small, especially when it comes to the community,” Rosar said.

Accomplishing lofty goals

It’s this mentality that inspired Subaru and the Union to transform Subaru Park into the first soccer-specific venue in the United States to achieve zero-landfill status. Since earning the trailblazing zero-waste status in October 2021, the stadium has diverted over 920,356 pounds of waste from landfills, Rosar said.

On the grounds of Subaru Park, employees and volunteers also tend an organic garden that’s yielded more than 5,000 pounds of produce since its first harvest in 2020. In all, Subaru and the Union have donated more than 20,000 servings of fresh organic vegetables from the garden to churches, ministries, and better living centers in and around Philadelphia.

Embracing all things pets, Subaru Park continues to serve as a home for pet adoption events, in which the automaker has helped unite over 300 dogs with loving homes.

Helping Philadelphia youth in the classroom and on the pitch

Elsewhere in the community, the two organizations continue to challenge themselves to do more. Last year, Subaru and the Union scratched plans to adopt a single elementary classroom and instead opted to adopt all 20 classrooms at nearby Stetser Elementary School. Subaru assembled school supply kits for each classroom, provided critical learning materials and sports equipment for more than 250 students, and hosted an engaging and fun back-to-school festival for the school.

The commitment to local youth extends beyond the classroom and onto the soccer field as well. The Gear for Good initiative donated and delivered more than 700 soccer gear items to children in Philadelphia last year. Subaru and the Union also unveiled a mini soccer pitch in Camden, offering local kids a safe space to enjoy the sport and hone their soccer skills.

Committed to the community

As the partnership continues to grow, the organizations are staying true to the communities they serve. “The heart of this partnership is the commitment to the local community,” Rosar said. “It’s in the DNA of both organizations to make a positive contribution to the communities we live in.”

Customized financial services and advice from Key4Women certified advisors
Exclusive member events and forums with industry experts to help foster professional and business development while creating lasting connections with industry leaders and professionals
Timely and robust thought leadership content and insights, covering the latest in financial and business trends to help women succeed
Strong support of national and local women organizations

With thousands of Key4Women Certified Advisors throughout Key’s footprint, we understand the unique needs of women entrepreneurs and leaders. Access to capital and mentorship continue to be two critical needs of women-owned businesses, which is why Key4Women expanded its pitch contest from Northeast Ohio to Washington State in 2022. Through the competition, nearly $70,000 in cash prizes were awarded to 20 finalists.
