Idle Fish helped users cut carbon footprint by 3 million metric tons in FY23China’s second-hand market will be worth RMB3 trillion by 2025: Frost & Sullivan

By Chloe Shen

Alibaba Group’s consumer-to-consumer resale platform Idle Fish is moving into a social e-commerce model, giving China’s growing cohort of sustainability-driven users a new forum to connect.

The update is just in time for World Environment Day on Monday, an occasion marked by the United Nations and many other organizations to raise awareness about preserving and protecting our environment.

Social commerce combines e-commerce and social media, allowing users to discover products and join communities of consumers with similar interests.

“The mission of Idle Fish is to mix the fun in finding and trading pre-owned goods with greener living. We want to make sustainability a new lifestyle for more people,” said Ji Shan, General Manager of Idle Fish, at an event in Shanghai last month.

The platform unveiled a community forum called the Seafood Market – a nod to Idle Fish’s piscine name and its role in facilitating trade – where users can engage in hashtag-based conversations about current events.

The latest update has been a boon for Idle Fish influencers like Kira Liu, 33. A government office worker by day, he has spent over 20 years remodeling collectible toys like Marvel superhero Iron Man and Japanese robot figure Gundam in his free time.

He now manages an Iron Man-focused forum on the Seafood Market, where around 1,700 Marvel fans meet virtually to discuss their collectibles.

A second forum, called Can Play, has invited over 800,000 verified influencers onto the site to share their knowledge and skills through conversations with everyday users.

Platforms like Idle Fish, where consumers can find a variety of recycled, refurbished, for-rent and second-hand goods for sale, support the goal to protect the environment.

The app, whose user base crossed 500 million this May, is part of the growing Chinese pre-owned goods market that will be worth approximately RMB3 trillion ($421.5 billion) by 2025, according to business consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

Social Commerce

Idle Fish is entering a lucrative new area of retail that enables consumers to monetize their passions, widening the reselling platform’s potential user base.

Chinese consumers spent over $406 billion on social commerce last year, according to a McKinsey report, driven by legions of hobbyists with niche expertise in subjects from cars to superhero figurines.

“Some users even go so far as to build and launch their own side gigs or startups on the platform,” said Idle Fish’s Ji.

The platform is helping Idle Fish influencer Liu make his hobby pay and contribute to his household’s income.

“My wife was not very happy about the time I spent on my collections. So, I turned it into a side gig that brings in money every month, ranging from a few thousand renminbi to over RMB10,000 ($1,407),” said Liu, who has been using Idle Fish for seven years.

Evergreen

While the platform’s format has changed, its underlying commitment to supporting a circular economy has not.

Buying and selling previously-owned products saves energy used in the manufacturing of new ones, and Idle Fish will remain a place for Chinese consumers to recycle their pre-loved goods.

In the most recent fiscal year, the platform and its users together reduced three million metric tonnes of carbon emissions by shopping secondhand instead of buying new.

“This is the equivalent of turning off all street lights in Shanghai for seven consecutive years,” Ji told the audience at the product’s launch event in May.

TEMPE, Ariz., June 9, 2023 /3BL Media/ — According to new research from GoDaddy and UCLA, the U.S. cities with the most microbusiness activity during the fourth quarter of 2022 are San Jose, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Denver, San Diego, and Austin. At the national level, the GoDaddy/UCLA Anderson Forecast Microbusiness Activity Index (MAI) shows that overall microbusiness activity declined slightly after peaking in April 2022.

Key Takeaways from the Q4 2022 MAI Report:

One online microbusiness entrepreneur is associated with the creation of an additional 6.7 jobs at the county level. The top states for microbusiness activity are Colorado, Utah, Maryland, and Oregon.Across America’s metro areas, San Jose, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Denver, San Diego, and Austin lead the nation in microbusiness activity.Metro areas like San Antonio, Detroit, and Miami, with historically lower levels of infrastructure scores (e.g., broadband subscriptions, home computers, and varying education attainment), are catching up with their peers with higher infrastructure growth rates.Due to rising interest rates and a slowing economy, the overall MAI declined from its peak of 106.5 in April 2022 to 102.7 in December 2022.

“Microbusiness owners, which typically employ 10 or fewer employees, have an outsized economic impact,” said Alexandra Rosen, senior director of Venture Forward, GoDaddy’s five-year-old microbusiness impact research initiative. “We found that a single microbusiness owner can add nearly 7 jobs at the county level, emphasizing the importance of supporting entrepreneurs to spur job growth in local communities.”

Twice a year, the UCLA Anderson Forecast publishes an updated report and MAI with GoDaddy’s Venture Forward initiative. Venture Forward quantifies the economic impact made by entrepreneurs by providing insight into their needs, demographics, challenges, and behaviors. The current report represents the Q4 2022 update and contains data through December 2022 for the nation, individual states, metros, and counties across the U.S.

“The slight decline in microbusiness activity we observed in the fourth quarter of 2022 tracks closely with wider macroeconomic conditions,” said William Yu, Economist at UCLA Anderson Forecast. “However, we observed that regions with the highest levels of human capital and digital infrastructure had the strongest increases in microbusiness activity.”

Raising awareness to address an issue that impacts billions of people around the world. Southwire’s Project GIFT recently partnered with Water Mission to host a Walk for Water event, collecting $38,520 in donations.

According to the Water Mission website, 2.2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water, and the non-profit organization — founded in 2001 — strives to end the global water crisis by bringing clean, fresh water to those in less fortunate circumstances.

Southwire facilities in Carrollton, Ga.; Bremen, Ind.; Denton, Texas; Fontana, Calif.; York, Penn.; Canada and Honduras are participating in walks in their communities as part of a large signature effort across the company to get involved with Water Mission. Among the participating locations, Bremen raised the most funds for the organization, collecting nearly $1,000, and the Honduras event featured more than 90 participants – a great turnout for their first year.

“For the Honduras team, this event was very important for us to participate in since our country benefits greatly from Water Mission and because so many of our team members are always looking for opportunities to make an impact on their communities,” said Ana Henriquez, people and culture manager. “At the end of our walk, all of the team members who had participated were proud to have completed the event and were fulfilled to know that they were able to be a part of something that raises awareness for a cause so meaningful to others around the world.”

During the event, participants walked a course that is designed to represent the daily route that many people around the world take to get water each day. The water collected by participants was recycled for use in Southwire’s manufacturing processes.

“The Walk for Water event is an incredible portrayal of the challenges that billions of people around the world face,” said Wil Rainey, giving back specialist. “It’s been amazing to see how much this event has grown in our community over the past year, and I look forward to seeing its continued growth in the years to come.”

Project GIFT’s Walk for Water was made possible thanks to the generosity of many community sponsors including the University of West Georgia, Times-Georgian, Servpro, New Leaf Marketing, Gradick Communications, Phoenix Wood Products, Heart Wood Products, Tisinger Vance, 3:16 Healthcare and Associated Credit Union.

CINCINNATI, June 9, 2023 /3BL Media/ – First responders, including representatives from local police, fire and emergency management agencies (EMA) throughout southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky, attended Duke Energy Storm School, an interactive training session on the company’s preparation for and response to severe weather. At the beginning of the program, each EMA was awarded a $5,000 Duke Energy Foundation grant, for a total of $55,000.

“Preparing communities to respond to severe weather impacts takes all of us,” said Amy Spiller, president of Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky. “Together with our fellow first responders, we are committed to keeping our region resilient. These grants will help provide our partners with the tools and training to handle whatever Mother Nature throws our way.”

Approximately 30 EMA and first responders learned from Duke Energy experts in meteorology, storm preparation and restoration, and grid resiliency to gain an understanding of how the company makes decisions and works collaboratively to safely and quickly restore power after a storm.

“Duke Energy is a crucial and close partner of the Hamilton County EMA,” said Director Nick Crossley. “We appreciate this generous donation and, more importantly learning more about their detailed response plans before, during and after severe weather impacts our communities.”

As the spring and summer storm season approaches, Duke Energy urges customers to be prepared. Create (or update) an emergency supply kit to save valuable time later. The kit should include everything an individual or family would need for at least two weeks, especially medicines, water, nonperishable foods and other supplies that might be hard to find after a storm hits.

Keep a portable radio or TV or a NOAA weather radio on hand to monitor weather forecasts and important information from state and local officials.
Charge cellphones, computers and other electronic devices in advance of storms to stay connected to important safety and response information. Consider purchasing portable chargers and make sure they are fully charged as well.
Pet owners should arrange to stay at evacuation shelters that accept pets; friends’ or family members’ homes; or pet-friendly hotels.

For full information on being prepared before, during and after a storm hits, visit https://www.duke-energy.com/safety-and-preparedness/storm-safety.

I’m proud to share that the Arbor Day Foundation has helped plant 500 million trees over our 51-year history.

The number can be a little tough to wrap your head around. But when you look past the monumental number and consider each individual tree, the full picture of the impact of this milestone starts to take shape.

These trees have found homes in front yards and back yards all over the U.S. They’ve taken root in National Forests and National Parks. They’ve restored critical habitats for wildlife in more than 50 countries around the world. These 500 million trees have worked to right the wrongs of environmental inequities and nurture neighborhoods attempting to recover from natural disasters. Whether standing alone or among a bountiful forest, each of these 500 million trees has served to enrich the well-being of our climate and our communities.

At the Arbor Day Foundation, we make sure every tree we help plant is put in the ground with intention. Our team is motivated by purpose and the mission to better the planet. For us, 500 million is not simply a total sum. These 500 million trees represent our legacy and our longstanding commitment to a healthy environment.

Of course, this landmark occasion is also a reminder that our work is a team effort.

Planting 500 million trees is no small feat, and the achievement is a testament to the unwavering support of our corporate and planting partners. Throughout the last five decades, the Arbor Day Foundation has been fortunate to grow its network to include world leaders like the United Nations, federal organizations like the U.S. Forest Service, and environmental nonprofits like the World Wildlife Fund. Our longstanding connections with grassroots changemakers in local communities and our expansive membership network have also played a key role in reaching this milestone. These relationships have expanded our resources and knowledge and, in turn, furthered our ability to plant more trees where they’re needed most.

But as proud as we are about planting 500 million trees, we know it’s still not enough.

Climate change is worsening the impact of natural disasters, threatening food and water supply and it’s claiming lives. A report from 2021, says about 5 million deaths can be linked to climate change annually. Ultimately, it’ll take time for humanity to significantly reduce greenhouse gases enough to stop climate change in its tracks. But we can be working right now to slow its effects. Planting trees is one of the most effective nature-based solutions to mitigating the impact of a changing climate.

There’s an urgent need for another 500 million new trees. And the Arbor Day Foundation is already on its way.

Last summer, the Arbor Day Foundation announced its ambitious goal to plant 500 million new trees by June 2027. The world needs leaders to step up and accelerate the impact trees and forests have today. The Arbor Day Foundation is uniquely positioned to be part of that effort by planting trees with focus and at scale. By leveraging technology and our vast network of partners, we’re working to put our next 500 million trees in the neighborhoods and forests where they’re needed most.

We already know that 500 million trees can be a game changer.

Imagine what 500 million more could do.

Dan Lambe is CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. He can be reached at dlambe@arborday.org
