According to studies, 59% of U.S. teens have been bullied or harassed online. The need to empower youth to protect themselves online is growing as technology becomes even more embedded in teen lives. That’s why Norton, one of Gen’s trusted Cyber Safety brands, remains committed to a year-round partnership with the National Consumers League’s (NCL) LifeSmarts program.

For 30 years, LifeSmarts has provided free education and resources to middle and high school students on core consumer topics. This includes consumer rights and responsibilities, the environment, health and safety, personal finance, technology and workforce preparation. Norton is proud to have supported LifeSmarts as a 2023 Champion Level Sponsor for the second year in a row, granting NCL $125,000 for the program year. In addition to supporting the annual LifeSmarts Championship, we covered travel and expenses for students that would otherwise not have been able to attend the event. With Norton’s support, training in online safety, identity theft and online fraud are also now included in the year-long program.

LifeSmarts Championship

Recently, the 2023 National LifeSmarts Championship took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. The annual event brings together top-performing student teams from across the country to compete for scholarships and prizes.

The Championship, which aims to create consumer-savvy young people who will be well-equipped for today’s complex marketplace, is free to participants, relying on corporate and private donations to make sure student teams are able to attend.

This year, 42 teams competed, representing 30 states and the District of Columbia. Nine of these teams were from Title-1 schools (schools in which the majority of families live below the poverty line and under-resourced community organizations. Norton supported these nine Wild Card teams by funding the LifeSmarts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative. Our funding covered all travel expenses, including air fare, hotel stays and meals. For many of these teams, this was their first time out of the state or traveling on an airplane and many let us know that without our contribution, it would have been impossible to attend.

“The students who attend our rural Minnesota school have not had an easy road and tend to struggle to see that they have what it takes to be successful in both school and in life. As we have progressed this year through the LifeSmarts program, it is so fun to see them light up when they get a question correct and it’s exciting to see their growth. This has only drawn them in more to this competition, as this type of success is not something that is familiar to many of them. Many of our families cannot afford to take trips within Minnesota, much less to other states. The opportunity for these kids to fly on an airplane, stay in a hotel and meet other students is not something that comes along for them. Without this generous Norton Wild Card team, our school could not afford to send our kids to a national competition. They will look back on this experience as one of the best experiences within their high school career, if not their lives. They also come back knowing that they have been seen and that they do have what it takes to truly succeed in life.” – Norton Wild Card team coach

We’re excited to add that a student from one of our Wild Card teams, Gabe Laster, was awarded ‘Student of the Year’ and two of our Wild Card teams tied for fifth place at the event.

In addition to providing direct support to make the competition accessible for more students, our support underwrote the LifeSmarts Identity Theft Essay Contest. Thirty-two students investigated identity theft and wrote essays, and we awarded five winners with $1,000 scholarships at the event. We also provided Norton 360 Deluxe product licenses to each student, coach, alumni and coordinator who attended the Championship – 350 licenses in total.

Year-round Support

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, Norton has provided lessons focusing on online safety and identify theft for LifeSmarts to incorporate into its curriculum. Our joint goal is to provide teens with valuable digital safety resources as they prepare to enter higher education and the workforce.

After completing our lessons this year, on average, 85% of the students could easily identify online fraud and take steps to protect themselves online. Test scores for our programs have also improved more than 15% across the board from the beginning to the end of the program year.

The LifeSmarts program continues to improve the lives of many students across the country, and we’re proud to play a role in supporting their success. To learn more about LifeSmarts, visit their website here.

HOUSTON, June 29, 2023 /3BL/ – Today, the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) and Hello Alice, the fintech helping over one million small businesses access capital, proudly announced the creation of a $70M Equitable Access Fund, with initial funding led by Wells Fargo, that will be developed and deployed over the next five years to improve equitable access to credit and capital amongst small business owners. The fund will provide credit enhancements, including guarantees, loan loss reserves and cash collateral deposits to financing partners to enable them to reasonably increase their risk tolerance to help unlock credit access for underserved high-potential but credit-challenged small business owners.

The fund is part of the Equitable Access Program, which provides increased credit access and financial education to high-potential underserved entrepreneurs with credit challenges. The program is run by Hello Alice and GEN. Wells Fargo provided the initial major grant to start the Equitable Access Fund. Financing Partners of the Equitable Access Fund will include First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO), the issuer of the Hello Alice Small Business Mastercard, and select partners in the Hello Alice Financing Marketplace. Additional key partners of the Equitable Access Program include Mastercard and the Kauffman Foundation.

The fund, managed by GEN, addresses significant untapped demand for business credit among small businesses, especially in those run by members of the New Majority, which includes women, veterans, BIPOC, Latinx, those with disabilities, and LGTBQ among other groups. According to Hello Alice data, only 25% of small business owners have applied for a business credit card, and 85% of those applications were denied due to poor credit or lack of credit. Even so, 90% of small business owners without business credit believe a business card would impact their business in a positive way. Through the Equitable Access Fund, these owners gain a pathway to accessing a business credit card, building their credit profile, and eventually qualifying for traditional credit and lending products needed to grow their businesses. The $70 million fund aims to unlock up to an estimated $1 billion in credit access for thousands of small business owners. Hello Alice and GEN will continue to work with and bring on new financing partners over the next several months to build out the fund and support small business owners in need of credit to grow.

“There is an estimated $40 billion annually of unmet financing demand from BIPOC-owned employers that applied for financing, and an estimated $1 trillion in unmet financing demand from all small businesses nationally,” said Elizabeth Gore and Carolyn Rodz, co-founders of Hello Alice. “The Equitable Access Fund provides credit enhancements that enable our financial partners to reasonably increase their risk tolerance, which ultimately unlocks credit access for those who really need it. We’re looking forward to creating more partnerships and bringing more institutions on board to the fund to achieve the goal of equitable access to credit.”

“The Equitable Access Fund will open doors for high-potential, credit-challenged entrepreneurs to achieve their full potential as founders, job-creators, and agents of change,” said Jonathan Ortmans, founder and president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network. “While our focus is on the United States credit system, we believe the outcomes of this work will also serve as a case study for other nations to learn from and adapt to support under-served entrepreneurs within their jurisdictions.”

The Equitable Access Fund is the latest initiative Wells Fargo has supported as part of its larger commitment to expand community engagement and enterprise philanthropy efforts through the Wells Fargo Foundation. The foundation has a strategic focus on small business growth, financial health, and a sustainable future, which are core tenants of the Equitable Access Program and Fund.

The Equitable Access Program is part of GEN and Hello Alice’s commitment to ensuring that all entrepreneurs and small business owners have access to the capital they need to grow the sustainable businesses that power their communities and economies. As part of the program, small business owners will be provided with wrap-around credit-building education and technical assistance through an assessment tool called the Business Health Score, which launched in April 2023. The score provides a comprehensive overview of a business’s financial health, which allows small business owners to make informed decisions about how to improve financial performance and achieve long-term success through a real-time recommendation engine. Both the score and the fund provide an avenue for banks to better serve small businesses and demonstrate the lucrative value of investing in the New Majority.

Healthy buildings took center stage late last month at a dynamic event titled, “Health in Buildings Partnerships and GSA’s Vision for the Future,” which was the first of a new signature series hosted by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the nation’s largest public real estate organization that provides workspace for over 1 million federal workers, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Defining the Role of Healthy Buildings in the Post-Pandemic Era
The featured panel, which included leaders and experts from across government and other organizations, including the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), delved into the critical importance of prioritizing health in buildings for both office and remote workers in a post-COVID era.

“Buildings can protect you. They can make you well or they can make you sick,” said Dr. Whitney Austin Gray, Senior Vice President of Research at IWBI and one of the featured speakers on the panel. In her remarks, Dr. Gray underscored the huge impact buildings have on human health, noting people spend roughly 90 percent of their time inside a building. In her presentation, which covered the rise of the health in buildings movement and the rapid global adoption of WELL, she described how buildings, if approached with human health and well-being as a primary focus, can serve as “a prescription for health.”

Gray’s emphasis on IWBI’s work to translate research into action resonated throughout the discussion. As a public health advocate, she highlighted the inherent potential of buildings to safeguard and promote human health and the continued imperative to prioritize healthy indoor environments. “Now is the time to activate, to take up public health by positioning buildings to protect people from disease while helping to promote their well-being. Buildings can do both.”

The session showcased a diverse lineup of distinguished panelists, including several speakers from the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings at the General Services Administration (GSA), including Kevin Kampschroer, Dr. Judi Heerwagen, Brian Gilligan, Bryan Steverson, and Michael F. Bloom.

The GSA panelists delved into past efforts and outlined a future vision for embracing health-enhancing strategies in buildings. Over the past two decades, the GSA and its partner organizations have developed tools and resources to help implement these strategies in federal buildings. The wealth of resources addresses crucial factors such as air quality, lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort, and other elements that significantly impact occupants’ well-being.

Driving Research to Better Support Federal Buildings
Bryan Steverson shared groundbreaking research on the influence of circadian lighting on human health. The GSA’s pioneering studies, conducted in federal buildings using wearable devices, sought to understand the effects of lighting on individuals’ well-being. Steverson emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making, utilizing real-world scenarios rather than relying solely on laboratory environments. As a result, circadian lighting was successfully incorporated into the GSA’s Facilities Standards for the Public Building Service (P100), which establishes mandatory design standards and performance criteria for GSA-owned buildings.

During Brian Gilligan’s remarks, he introduced the Wellbuilt for Wellbeing initiative, a collaborative research collaboration across government agencies, industry experts and academic institutions to explore the nexus between indoor air quality, health and well-being. The initiative has helped advance research projects in partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratories and research teams in academia, generating multiple studies on more specific health strategies. One such study was focused on the role of relative humidity to improve the health and wellbeing of office workers. To date, Gilligan has helped to lead efforts to better understand how design layout, air quality, lighting, and noise impact occupant stress levels. The findings, documented in published research papers, offered invaluable insights for optimizing building layouts and operations. Another presenter, Sara Karerat, who leads research at the Center for Active Design, discussed GSA’s track record supporting health in buildings, highlighting additional ways to make progress and build partnerships.

Dr. Judi Heerwagen, a healthy building expert at GSA and member of IWBI’s Research Advisory, also presented, shedding light on the social impact of physical disconnection from the office workplace and its effect on mental health, including increased loneliness and substance abuse. The panel collectively acknowledged the transformational workplace shifts brought about by the pandemic and the heightened need to implement health strategies for people who are working at the office or at home.

Leveraging GSA Tools to Continue Momentum
Bryan Steverson also discussed the Total Workplace Scorecard, a new tool offered by the Office of High Performance Green Buildings to gauge strategies for creating healthier workspaces. The panel explored the scorecard’s usage across various buildings and asked questions about how it was being used to date.

Another national expert, Dr. Esther Sternberg, a Professor of Medicine in the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and Research Director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and Director of the University of Arizona Institute on Place, Wellbeing & Performance, spoke at the event. Dr. Sternberg, another member of IWBI’s Research Advisory, highlighted several existing research efforts that show how deploying health-focused building strategies across the built environment advances cumulative health benefits for occupants.

Finally, Michael F. Bloom provided an overview of the Sustainable Facilities Tool (SFTool), an online federal resource clearinghouse that consolidates sustainable building practices into eight distinct modules and helps federal facility managers adopt health and sustainability practices. This extensive repository provides federal architects, engineers, and building professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to create healthier, more sustainable structures. Bloom, looking forward, also emphasized the significance of fortifying buildings to withstand future pandemics and health challenges, fostering resilience and adaptability.

The key message throughout the event was the role of partnership to translate research to action and research into practice across the GSA. The lessons learned through ongoing applied research and public dissemination of information on healthy buildings strategies was elevated during the session and IWBI was honored to be a leading expert and supportive partner of the movement.

Over the coming months, GSA and the National Academies will continue to host additional events in this series. The full schedule can be found here.

Ranking recognizes Ericsson as a global leader in sustainabilityHonour comes as Ericsson Canada celebrates its 70th anniversary of operations in Canada, with new R&D investments announced this year

TORONTO, June 28, 2023 /3BL/ – Ericsson, a leading R&D spender in Canada and a global leader in 5G sustainability, is proud to announce it has been named as one of Canada’s Top International Corporate Citizens in 2023. This designation was awarded to Ericsson by Corporate Knights, a media and research company committed to advancing a sustainable economy.

Jeanette Irekvist, President of Ericsson Canada, says: “We’re honoured to be named a Top International Corporate Citizen in Canada by Corporate Knights. This recognition is a huge accomplishment for our team and reinforces our dedication to achieving Net Zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2040 and supporting Canada’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Ericsson is committed to supporting the deployment of smart, sustainable 5G networks that provide high performance with a lower carbon footprint. We are driving our global innovation in network sustainability through our investments in R&D here in Canada, and a research partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada and ÉTS, Concordia and Polytechnique that is already exploring how AI can help our sector meet Canada and the world’s carbon neutrality goals.”

Ericsson ranked in the eighth position in the 2023 Top 10 International Corporate Citizens. Winners are selected from 115 companies that earn over $1 billion in revenues in Canada, are not listed or headquartered in Canada and have the highest scores on the Corporate Knights Sustainability Rating methodology, and that ranked highest on Corporate Knight’s previously released Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies in the World.

Bhushan Joshi, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility, Ericsson North America, says: “Ericsson’s commitment to corporate responsibility and climate action is central to our company purpose and built into our way of working and the solutions we deliver. Ericsson is committed to pioneering a sustainable future by helping our customers sustainably scale 5G and enabling the decarbonization of industries using the power of connectivity. This recognition reflects the efforts of Ericsson colleagues in Canada and around the world who are committed to advancing our Net Zero journey.”

The Corporate Knights Sustainability Rating methodology incorporates data collected from annual reports, sustainability reports, and company websites to score companies based on metrics such as share of “clean” revenue and investments, eco-efficiency, diversity on boards of directors and among executives. One fifth of those Global 100 companies are U.S.-based, making it the leading country for members of the index, followed by Canada with 11 per cent.

“Ericsson, as a global entity, was noted for its top quartile performance against global peers on energy productivity, carbon productivity, cash taxes paid ratio, sustainable investments and pension fund quality.” Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights.

Rapidly increasing mobile network usage is driving a need to deploy more capacity, creating a sustainability challenge for service providers. Ericsson’s innovative Radio Access Networks (RAN) energy-saving software enables service providers to decrease power consumption while preparing their networks for 5G consumer and business demand. Ericsson’s 5G portfolio is 10 times more energy efficient than 4G and its third and fourth generation massive MIMO 5G radios were 10 times more energy efficient compared to 4G radios.
