June 29, 2023 /3BL/ – SkysTheLimit.org is proud to announce the most recent grant winners of its Rise Up! program in celebration of World Refugee Day and World Refugee Awareness Month. Rise Up! combines the strengths of Sky’s the Limit’s virtual mentoring platform, entrepreneurship model, global online community, and grant dollars and directs those strengths specifically towards refugee entrepreneurs.

By reducing barriers and providing streamlined support throughout the entrepreneurial journey, Sky’s the Limit works hand in hand with refugees to build and sustain thriving, inclusive communities. Refugees, often resettled in underserved areas, start businesses at a higher rate compared to other groups. The businesses they create also tend to address urgent local needs, and fill gaps in key sectors including professional services, retail, and food.

With its experience in serving 50,000+ underrepresented entrepreneurs, Sky’s the Limit has uniquely positioned itself to connect refugee entrepreneurs with skilled volunteers, partners, and the necessary resources for launching and growing local businesses — all made possible through Sky’s the Limit’s unique digital platform.

Thanks to generous support from our partner, Accenture, Sky’s the Limit has awarded over $45,000 to refugee entrepreneurs since the launch of the Rise Up! program a year ago.

Sky’s the Limit is thrilled to announce the winners of two 2023 Rise Up! pitch competitions — both of which showcased the exceptional talent and resilience of refugee entrepreneurs.

The Rise Up! for UK Refugee Entrepreneurs pitch competition brought together 13 founders who competed for funding to support their social impact start-ups. This event marked the culmination of a workshop series held in collaboration with Accenture, TERN, and Sky’s the Limit.

We are pleased to announce the winner of the Rise Up! for UK Refugee Entrepreneurs pitch event:

Antony Kimani, Founder of Kwetu Coffee. Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Kwetu Coffee is a socially conscious coffee shop that not only sells ethically sourced coffee but also provides barista training to asylum seekers and refugees. It aims to create a cultural, artistic, and social space within the community.

In celebration of World Refugee Day, Sky’s the Limit hosted a second pitch competition in Washington DC, where refugee entrepreneurs competed for and were awarded grants totaling $20,000. The winners are:

Yohago is an initiative that coaches, trains, and promotes entrepreneurship among artisans and artists while helping them to reflect their identity, culture, and national pride. The project also supports single mothers and women exposed to violence, currently benefiting over 3,000 small entrepreneurs in El Salvador.

Additionally, Sky’s the Limit sponsored and participated in the One Journey Festival for the second consecutive year. The One Journey Festival celebrates the talents, stories, and contributions of refugees and displaced individuals worldwide. This family-friendly event brings people together through the shared languages of humanity — art, food, music, dance, storytelling, soccer, fashion, and technology.

“Our goal at Sky’s the Limit is to create an inclusive ecosystem where refugee entrepreneurs feel welcomed and supported. We are honored to witness their resilience and determination as they overcome obstacles and build exciting new businesses. The Sky’s the Limit community is truly inspired by their courage and innovation, and we will continue to champion their entrepreneurial journeys,” said Laura Plato, Chief Operating Officer at Sky’s the Limit.

Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Albany, through a unique partnership with Southern Company subsidiary, Georgia Power, is currently installing 21 charging stations at nine locations across the base, which will allow up to 96 vehicles to be plugged in on the base simultaneously. The project has been initiated and is expected to be complete by fall.

Georgia Power was awarded the first-ever turnkey electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) solution using the General Services Administration Areawide Contract (AWC). The project will be a model for the Department of Defense (DoD) to use across the country in partnering with a local utility like Georgia Power to design, construct, own, operate and maintain EVSE. It is also the first time the AWC will be used to provide for a holistic and scalable EVSE solution to support both current and future electrification requirements.

The AWC provides a public-private partnership with regulated servicing utility companies to cover utility service needs of Federal agencies within the franchise territory of the supplier for up to 10 years. This unique federal construct allowed MCLB Albany to use the “Make Ready” program to accelerate their plans and maximize the Government’s investment. In the Make Ready program, Georgia Power owns, installs and maintains the electrical infrastructure up to the charger itself. The program is available to all business customers and helps remove potential financial barriers to their transition to electric transportation. As a result of this partnership and project, MCLB Albany is uniquely poised to meet the Biden Administration EO 14057 of a 100% zero-emission fleet.

“This modernized energy infrastructure will support our mission and lessen our dependence on fossil fuels,” said Meredith Berger, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations, and Environment and Chief Sustainability Officer. “Innovative partnerships and solutions like this make our installations more survivable and the communities they are a part of more resilient.”

The EV charging project at MCLB Albany is the latest example of continued successful collaboration between the base and Georgia Power in advancing better energy use and overall modernization, with the base earning national accolades for its efforts.

“This is a great partnership with Georgia Power as the DoD looks into the future. We need to prepare the base and Marine Corps to support a future electric vehicle fleet,” said MCLB Albany Commanding Officer Col. Michael Fitzgerald.

This is this just one of many projects underway across the SE that illustrates Southern Company’s ability and desire to work with DoD installations to identify and deliver sustainability, resiliency and energy efficiency solutions. It is part of a much broader commitment Southern has made to partner with the federal government in advancing mutual net-zero GHG emission and grid decarbonization goals that benefits both the customers and communities we serve.

“In addition to being essential for national defense, our nation’s military bases are powerful economic engines for surrounding communities providing jobs and driving thriving local economies,” said Chris Cummiskey, Executive Vice President, Chief Customer Solutions and Chief Commercial Officer for Southern Company. “MCLB Albany is a forward-looking military base dedicated to energy innovation and planning for the future, and we’re proud of our continued partnership. As the new EV charging stations open across the installation this year, we know the investment that is being made today will benefit the base for years to come.”

“That is what it’s all about. People coming and giving back to the community,” said Jeanne Wickem. The 77-year-old smiled from ear to ear as Regions Bank associates helped her with home improvements.

Because of work like this, seniors can stay in their homes and remain a vibrant part of this spruced-up block in Central City, New Orleans.

Jericho Road Episcopal Housing and the Regions Foundation, a nonprofit funded primarily by Regions Bank, organized this day of giving back called Bling Your Block. Jericho Road brought members of its construction team, who are part of the program’s workforce development initiative. And volunteers from Regions Bank came to help with painting porches, decorating, and landscaping along Barrone Street.

“With the generous assistance of volunteers from Regions Bank and financial support from the Regions Foundation, we aim to ‘bling the block’ of Baronne Street, providing the seniors in our community with more beautiful and welcoming homes to reside in,” said Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Executive Director Nicole Barnes. “This collaborative effort not only uplifts the individual households but also contributes to the overall revitalization and enhancement of the neighborhood.”

It’s a story that needs to be seen in addition to being told. So, the team from Doing More Today takes you along. Watch the video above.

Want to know more? Jericho Road has a track record of serving New Orleans, including by purchasing and updating homes. People in Jericho Road’s Workforce Development Program repair homes, which are then sold to underserved homebuyers. The Workforce Development Program hires underemployed workers and trains them in construction skills.

“Jericho Road has an unwavering dedication to empowering people in New Orleans through education, skills training, and home buying opportunities,” added Regions Foundation Executive Director Marta Self. “The Regions Foundation is proud to fund this program that addresses needs for affordable housing and workforce development, providing an upward pathway for all involved.”

The Regions Foundation provides grants to a range of organizations supporting education and workforce readiness, as well as economic development, community development and financial wellness. The foundation provided a $40,000 grant to support Jericho Road in its efforts.

As we enter Pride 2023, it’s a good time for business owners to think about how to support LGBTQIA+ people in the workplace — both employees and customers alike.

Consider this: according to the most recent Gallup poll, 7.1% of Americans now self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or as something other than heterosexual. That figure is double the percentage from 2012, when Gallup first started measuring it.

The 2022 poll also shows that one in five Gen Z adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or other than heterosexual.

And expand that to the broader LGBTQIA+ cohort? That’s a lot of people your business can impact for the better.

But in case you’re unfamiliar with the acronym, here’s what each letter means:

Lesbian — A woman who’s inclined to partner with other women.

Gay — A man who’s inclined to partner with other men.

Bisexual — An individual who’s inclined to partner with both men and women.

Transgender — An individual whose gender identity doesn’t match their sex assigned at birth.

Queer/Questioning — Either someone who doesn’t define strictly on the spectrum, or an individual uncertain about or exploring their romantic orientation.

Intersex — An individual born with sex characteristics corresponding to both sexes.

Asexual — An individual who’s not inclined to partner with any gender.

Plus (+) — Reserved to legitimize additional identities and those that might emerge in the future.

In order to support the community, it’s important to be educated about the people within it. If you’re unfamiliar with the different identities included in the LGTBQIA+ acronym, another resource that might help is the Human Rights Campaign’s Glossary of Terms.

With that understood, let’s explore how a large, multinational corporation may approach this type of support. Then, we’ll look at some of the things you can do, as a business owner, to support your own LGBTQIA+ employees and people who interact with your business.

How does GoDaddy support LGBTQIA+ individuals?

GoDaddy dedicates resources to the key initiatives we’re about to cover. At the core of this activity are two groups: the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) program, an internal group that seeks to continually foster an inclusive and healthy environment within the company, and GDUnited, which represents and celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community, both inside and outside GoDaddy.

Information about these efforts and much more can be found in our 2022 Diversity and Pay Parity Annual report.

How to support LGBTQIA+ employees within your organization

Today, some form of diversity and inclusion in the workplace is essential, and can have a big impact on your employees and business. While some businesses might lack the resources to sustain large-scale initiatives, there’s always something you can do to tell employees, Hey, you belong. And we’re glad you’re here.

Foster a culture of education

As mentioned earlier, it’s understandable if people might be unfamiliar with the LGBTQIA+ acronym and community. No biggie. You can offer employees the opportunity to educate themselves by posting this information somewhere conspicuous, like on a break room bulletin board.

If you distribute company updates through email, blog posts or even a paper newsletter, consider including regular LGBTQIA+ content. This gives employees the chance to understand what might be new information on their own terms, and encourages learning and curiosity. It’s important to amplify the voices of people in the community to help educate others about their experiences.

And by fostering a culture of education, in which everyone is permitted to engage on their own terms, you can be sure your team will experience a sense of pride in their shared understanding.

Encourage LGBTQIA+ expression & support

What if, as the leader of your organization, you added pronouns to your email signature? You can bet employees would notice, and many might follow your example in supporting awareness of gender diversity.

That’s just one subtle way to encourage LGBTQIA+ expression and support.

But subtle isn’t always the best route. Sometimes it’s necessary to leave no doubt about your position. For example, when controversy surfaces in the news, you could communicate to employees that LGBTQIA+ people will always be welcome in your organization.

Maintain inclusive hiring practices

If you haven’t yet examined your policies for things like anti-discrimination and equal benefits, now is the time to do so. You should clearly spell out your stance on LGBTQIA+ equality, as well as the benefits you offer such as gender-affirming care, fertility benefits and adoption leave.

Another thing to consider is making more visible your stance on equal-opportunity hiring.

For example, job sites like Indeed or LinkedIn might bring in a good amount of solid applicants, but they don’t speak directly to inclusivity. It’s a good idea to include your commitment to inclusivity and equity directly in your job descriptions, and to cross-post your opportunities on LGBTQIA+ job boards like Pink Jobs and LGBT.net.

Above all, avoid tokenism. No individual can or does speak for an entire community of people, and no one should be made to feel as if they are being used as a prop for a corporate or personal gain of others.

If a member of the LGBTQIA+ community joins your organization, it’s an opportunity to benefit from their skills and experience — not to score points.

Listen to your employees

It’s important to ensure you have good listening strategies in place so that you can both hear from and understand employee experiences in your workplace. This will allow you to keep up with how people are feeling, including whether they feel supported, safe, and as if they can perform their best.

Consider sending out employee surveys

Do this on a regular basis, and make sure to both analyze and follow up on the results. There is no better way to understand how best to support and enable people outside of simply asking them.

It is especially important to prioritize addressing anything within your organization that may be allowing or enabling bias, discrimination or feelings of exclusion.

Follow the lead of organizations that represent the community

Organizations like the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and others publish a lot of guidelines and recommendations on how best to support LGTBQIA+ employees and individuals, including key opportunities around benefits, culture and inclusion.

Provide opportunities to participate in the LGBTQIA+ community

Many people remain unaware that the LGBTQIA+ community is open and welcoming to folks from all walks of life. There truly is a place for everyone to participate in and support the community as an ally.

If you’re interested in offering employees LGBTQIA+ volunteer opportunities, organizations like the Human Rights Campaign can connect you with a variety of roles to provide the perfect fit for your team.

Don’t forget that this can also be about having fun.

For example, if a local gay bar puts on a karaoke night, why not reach out as a potential sponsor? Offer to cover the cost of A/V rentals, the DJ or decorations, and give your employees the chance to get involved.

The publicity will be great for business, sure, but the smiles and laughs at work the next morning — as well as the feelings of safety and inclusion it promotes — will be priceless.

Finally, don’t forget about Pride.

It’s likely there will be events for your team to join, such as parades. Check with your local Pride community center to see what’s happening around town. If there’s nothing, peep Google’s #prideforeveryone experience, which uses 360-degree cameras to document Pride parades around the world — a cool watch party for your squad.

How to support LGBTQIA+ customers outside your organization

Now that we’ve explored how to make your organization a more safe and inclusive place for employees, let’s look at creating the same experience for customers and other people outside your organization.

Let them know where you stand

This can be as simple as displaying a Pride sticker on your window or posting on social media. You can use GoDaddy Studio: go to Templates to find posters you can design yourself, or you can download and print this one above.

f you maintain listings online, directories like Google and Yelp provide instructions to let you designate your business is safe and friendly for the LGBTQIA+ community.

You can also do the same with your business website.

In the About section, showcase all the things you do to support LGBTQIA+ people. And if you’re ready to get next-level with stating your position, create a microsite dedicated to your awesome initiatives, and then attach a .gay domain to it.

Move toward gender neutrality

If you’ve ever anxiously waited in line for the bathroom, you understand the beauty of gender-neutral restrooms — it’s the magical place where practicality meets equality. Kidding aside, restrooms like these let your customers know they aren’t judged on the basis of their gender identity, and they can create a much safer and supportive space for some

It can also act as training wheels for people who are still getting used to the idea of gender neutrality.

While you’re on the subject, do an audit of all customer-facing communications, such as signage, decorations or advertisements. When you use gender-specific language, ask yourself if it’s really necessary. If changing he/she to they/them doesn’t change the meaning or intent, it’s the right move. Or just get rid of the pronouns altogether.

Partner with LGBTQIA+ organizations

Just like sponsorships create opportunities for your employees, partnerships and cross-promotions give your customers broader access to the LGBTQIA+ community. Not only that, this can give a boost to businesses that might exist in a smaller niche.

Picture this: You operate a busy hair salon. Another boutique in town, LGBTQIA+ owned and operated, offers an herbally infused exfoliant. You partner up, promoting their products in your salon.

When your clients come in for a style, they learn about a wonderful exfoliant as well as the story behind the boutique offering it.

You get to expand your offerings, your LGBTQIA+ partner reaches a larger market, and clients get to educate themselves while enjoying fabulous skin.

Maintain a safe space

Now that your business is set up to support LGBTQIA+ people, keep it a safe space. Keep yourself in the know on the latest trends and issues surrounding the community, and don’t be afraid to display updated decor or news clippings when it makes sense.

But most of all, be prepared to address toxic behavior when it arises. That doesn’t mean you’re a lifeguard now, prepared to blow your whistle and holler at offenders. Use your judgment. Set expectations for the behavior you will allow in at your business. You might be surprised to learn how little it takes to bring people into the fold.

Enjoy celebrating Pride 2023

Hopefully, some of the strategies we’ve covered will help you shape your business into a more inclusive place. And that’s a reason to celebrate. Now that you’ve put in the work to support LGBTQIA+ people, get out there and participate in the community. Let your voice be loud and strong as you celebrate inclusion and diversity — and make sure to share that much-deserved sense of pride.

Created by NPCA’s staff of experts and filmed in Joshua Tree National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Shenandoah National Park, the guides showcase ways to enjoy time in parks with tips on how to visit responsibly.

Interested in casting a line and trying your hand at catch and release fishing? Our guide to Shenandoah National Park highlights this great place for avid and aspiring anglers alike interested in fishing for the park’s many varieties of trout and enjoying beautiful hikes as they find the perfect spot in the creek. Or maybe idyllic hikes and history is of greater interest – our guide to Golden Gate National Recreation Area showcases hikes through woods, sweeping vistas with views of the park’s namesake bridge and alongside places of historical significance for visitors of all experience levels. Would you rather learn more about desert wildlife? There’s more to Joshua Tree than its iconic trees – our guide features examples of the wide variety of cacti, wildflowers and desert animals like the tortoise visitors can spot in the park.

Through the video guides in this series, visitors can learn more about what they can see and experience when visiting one of these national parks and ensure they are responsible visitors when they are enjoying them. Following our simple tips – like protecting flora and fauna by staying on trails and bringing reusable items to keep plastic waste out of parks – help visitors keep parks pristine not only for their fellow visitors, but the wildlife that call parks home.

These guides are made possible by our partner, Travelodge® by Wyndham. With a large footprint near national park locations across the country, Travelodge is driving awareness for the preservation of our nation’s favorite places while providing a basecamp for adventurers to explore parks like those featured in our guides. Through this partnership, NPCA and Travelodge encourage people to responsibly visit places like Joshua Tree, Golden Gate and Shenandoah so they can both enjoy and protect the parks they explore.

The U.S. Bank Good Truck is on a West Coast tour this summer, delivering treats from small businesses to communities in California, Oregon and Washington.

There will be three separate Good Trucks making stops where the bank has branch locations, delivering complimentary day-brighteners like ice cream, flowers and other delights. The tour is one of the ways U.S. Bank is celebrating the conversion of hundreds of Union Bank branches to U.S. Bank earlier this year.

“The Good Truck is here to welcome our new U.S. Bank customers and give them a chance to learn more about the ways we can help power potential,” said Carl Jordan, executive vice president, branch and small business banking for California. “The addition of Union Bank allows our West Coast customers to enjoy greater convenience, improved technology and a continued focus on building strong and vibrant communities.”

The U.S. Bank Good Truck will be showing up at community events and U.S. Bank branches in California all summer long.  Check out the California branch stop schedules below and stop by to say hello!
