At Medtronic LABS, we’re working every day to cultivate a bolder, more equitable, and outcomes-focused global health system for the future. This week, we announced a Commitment to Action to scale tech-enabled healthcare at the Clinton Global Initiative 2023 meeting.

The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) brings together established and emerging global leaders to create and implement solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges by making a CGI Commitment to Action. Our commitment will form a consortium that brings together cross-sector partners to scale community-based, tech-enabled solutions for underserved patients, families, and communities across the world.

Partnerships with health systems, governments, innovators, and donors are part of our DNA – and the key to driving sustainable system-level transformation. This unique multi-sector consortium will expand on this model.

The commitment expands on our track record of cutting-edge innovation in digital health and provides a unique opportunity to leverage the power of cross sector collaboration to accelerate scale.

By integrating partnerships with health systems strengthening and digital technology, we have screened over 1 million people, enrolled nearly 200,000 in data-driven care, and improved clinical outcomes for almost 100,000 patients.

We recently announced that our digital health platform SPICE is now one of the first open-source digital platforms designed to support a new era of data driven community healthcare delivery.

“Our goal is to drive measurable health outcomes, and technology designed with patients and communities at the center can transform community health,” said Chief Strategy and Product Officer, Anne Stake.

Forming a consortium is more important than ever as access to quality healthcare for underserved populations in low- and middle-income countries remains a challenge.

“Transformative change doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” said President of Medtronic LABS, Ruchika Singhal. “That’s why we are excited to welcome new partners into the consortium.”

Cintas embraces and supports its Hispanic and Latin communities in part through TODOS, the company’s award-winning and innovative Partner Business Resource Group (PBRG) that works to foster an environment of inclusivity throughout the company while removing barriers and building the future.

TODOS, an acronym for Together Offering Diverse Opportunities & Solutions, was founded at Cintas more than a decade ago and was one of the company’s original employee resource groups.

“It started with really just seven of us at the corporate office. We were self-identified Hispanic or Latino partners and leaders who worked in the Cincinnati market or at the corporate office,” said Omar Ramos, TODOS President and General Manager at Location 51K in Tampa, Fla. “It was an opportunity for us to talk about the importance of diverse hiring and creating an inclusive environment for Hispanic or Latino partners as they were coming on board.”

TODOS has grown exponentially since then. About three years into the group’s existence, Scott Garula, currently the President & COO of the Rental Division, became its executive sponsor and pushed the organization to the national stage. Garula organized a three-day event that united Cintas’ Hispanic and Latino leaders from across the country at the company’s Cincinnati-area headquarters.

“It was a fantastic opportunity where we got to meet some of the top leaders within the organization that self-identified as Hispanic and Latino. We knew that there were more of us out there. We just weren’t tapped into our collective knowledge and experience yet. That’s when it really kind of came together for TODOS,” Ramos said.

Today, TODOS provides innovative programming, community service opportunities, a commitment to aid members’ career advancement, and cultural awareness.

It’s a two-time finalist in the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual Conference’s Employee Resource Group (ERG) Challenge, earning the designation among the country’s top ERGs in both 2020 and 2021.

The PBRG’s mission is to engage, inspire, develop and retain Hispanic and Latin partners of Cintas to drive total business performance and establish an esteemed reputation as the best place to work for the Hispanic and Latin community.

The TODOS vision is to be the top-of-mind “must join” community for connections, growth and development of all Cintas partners – not just those who identify as Hispanic or Latin – and to be considered Cintas’ most engaging PBRG with a dedicated member base across North America.

As a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), TODOSmembers speak to potential Management Trainees, recruits and interns at HACU’s annual conference. TODOS is also a member of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

TODOS’ annual meeting highlights the group’s activities for its membership and creates opportunities for members to connect directly with company and group leadership. It also hosts a monthly development speaker series to help members with both career and personal growth.

In addition to generating awareness during National Hispanic Heritage Month every Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, TODOS publishes a quarterly in which they feature group members to help members form a deeper community. Other content includes visibility from high-level TODOSleaders, short essays from employee-partners about their Cintas careers called “Por Que Cintas?” and career news including promotions.

TODOS Vice President Jose Hernandez, a Corporate Key Account Manager based out of the Boston area, said the group is a very important resource for Cintas’ Hispanic and Latino community.

“(TODOS) creates opportunity for our community to get involved. It allows them to feel heard. It allows them also to know that there are folks who look like them and are similar to them in the field and throughout Cintas,” Hernandez said. “We have the support of many employee-partners, and seeing some of those employee-partners become executives is also very rewarding.”

TODOS is also a resource for employee-partners who want to connect with other Hispanic and Latino employee-partners and their communities. To help the group expand its impact with programming and outreach, the PBRG also has three standing committees: Partner Development, Communications and External Relations. Each committee focuses on creating programming to help advance its members, the PBRG and Cintas, and to help further entrench the company as an employer of choice for Hispanic and Latin employee-partners.

Ramos and the TODOS board continue their work to help increase the organization’s visibility, both throughout the company and in the community.

TODOS’ leadership team also hopes to increase its membership, especially with employee-partners throughout North America who are both passionate about creating a diverse work environment and who appreciate the business and cultural importance of supporting diverse employee-partners and the communities Cintas serves.

TODOS Mission Statement

Our mission is to engage, inspire, develop and retain Hispanic and Latin partners of Cintas to drive total business performance and establish an esteemed reputation as the best place to work for the Hispanic and Latin community.

TODOS Vision

To be the top-of-mind, “must join” community for connections, growth and development of all Cintas partners; to transcend into the most engaging PBRG through our dedicated member base around the country.

Rewilding natural forest in Scotland

Rewilding is a conservation strategy where trees naturally regenerate in a specific ecosystem, making them better suited to survive for the long term and therefore have improved ability to capture carbon from the atmosphere. For the past three years, FedEx has provided support* to Rewilding Europe, a nonprofit creating a nature recovery area in Scotland’s Affric Highlands. Our support helped create partnerships between conservationists and private landowners to balance farming and environmental needs and funded the development of new finance mechanisms for rewilding across Europe. This active step against the climate emergency is helping create a rich and diverse habitat for wildlife and people alike – for generations to come.

When corporate partners like FedEx speak to the value of rewilding – for carbon capture and biodiversity impact – it helps landowners unlock the potential of their land and the benefits of restoring nature at the landscape scale.

Cleaning up waterways and beaches “down under”

190 employees and their families from FedEx Express Australia and FedEx Express New Zealand worked with Conservation Volunteers Australia to remove 209kg of litter from waterways, plant 8,500 seedlings, and free 1,500 trees from strangling weeds across ANZ. In total, volunteers dedicated 660 hours in cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Auckland.

FedEx is creating possibilities not only for our customers but for those in our communities. Our team members are passionate about making a positive impact and contributing to societal needs. Sustainability is a common social concern and our volunteers have been actively engaged in efforts at the grassroots level to protect our environment.

Boosting “tree equity scores” across the U.S.

Communities of color and low-income communities in the U.S. have 33% less tree canopy compared to wealthier, predominantly white communities. Less tree canopy leads to higher temperatures, more polluted air, and greater health risks. Alongside nonprofit One Tree Planted and their Urban Forestry Action Fund, FedEx supported 25 urban forestry projects aimed at communities with particularly low tree canopies, including in our world headquarters, Memphis, Tennessee. Our team members worked with local organizations to plant over 100 new trees in Memphis and will support the planting of 2,500 new trees in total across the U.S.

FedEx is proud to help One Tree Planted launch their Tree Equity Fund, supporting our goal to help 50 million people by our 50th anniversary. Our event in Memphis will launch the planting of over 2,500 trees in underserved neighborhoods across 27 different communities, ensuring the health and environmental benefits provided by trees are shared by all.

WASHINGTON, DC, September 19, 2023 /3BL/ – Today, Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture™ announced the annual update to its Climate Commitments Hub, which highlights targeted and aspirational commitments made by its members. This update showcases an increase in climate commitments from across Field to Market’s diverse membership sectors – affiliate, agribusiness, brands & retail, civil society, and grower.

Included in the update are climate commitments made by 126 of Field to Market member organizations – an increase from the 117 commitments found this time last year.

This update is launched in conjunction with Climate Week, as organizations from across the globe are coming together to celebrate achievements in climate action as well as explore new opportunities for continued improvement.

Field to Market’s Climate Commitments Hub demonstrates that organizations across the agriculture value chain are focusing greater attention on the changing climate, acknowledging the role their sector is prepared to play in driving lasting change.

“We are proud to see our members setting targeted and aspirational public climate goals and commitments to address climate change,” said Field to Market President Scott Herndon. “We must continue to find ways to collaborate to reach our shared goals, as no one organization can solve this challenge alone. We must work together to accelerate climate action in our agricultural value chain.”

By gathering commitments into this resource, Field to Market enables companies and organizations within the agriculture sector to benchmark their ambition with peers, drive greater climate performance, facilitate pre-competitive collaboration, foster additional research where needed, and promote transparency and accountability for these targets. It also provides the public an opportunity to view climate commitments by sector, exploring the progress organizations have made and what is left to be done.

Field to Market’s Climate Commitments Hub will continue to be updated regularly, with a published report to be launched biennially to reflect the current state of the industry’s commitments and progress.

Today, .gay – the top-level domain welcomed by GoDaddy Registry into its portfolio earlier in 2023 – unveiled its third annual Impact Report. The report shines a spotlight on the domain extension’s innovative community-driven initiatives and pioneering efforts to foster a more inclusive digital space, throughout 2022.

The .gay domain extension carved out a vibrant, inclusive space online and helped reshape the digital landscape for LGBTQIA+ communities and their allies. By providing a platform that encourages and amplifies community ideas, businesses and projects, .gay connects users directly to a dynamic queer network.

“GoDaddy’s offering of .gay domains empowers the LGBTQIA+ community to establish a secure online presence that fully expresses their unique identities, values and contributions,” said Nicolai Bezsonoff, General Manager of GoDaddy Registry. “The .gay domain extension represents a vibrant online hub for celebrating and connecting, promoting a sense of belonging and unity among all. We’re proud to carry forward Top Level Design’s work with .gay and are eager to continue supporting and growing this community.”

With more than 27,000 domains already registered and a total donation of more than $180,000 to community beneficiaries GLAAD and CenterLink, the .gay domain continues to defy the conventional, blazing a rainbow trail for LGBTQIA+ creators, brands, organizations and thought leaders to thrive online.

“We have been on a journey with .gay for 11 years, and it is a bittersweet moment now that my time managing the .gay domain extension has come to an end,” said Ray King, CEO of Top Level Design. “In 2012, we recognized the opportunity to create a new namespace for LGBTQIA+ communities, complete with industry-first policies that would separate .gay from the status quo. It was a big impossible dream, but thanks to our small but highly committed team, we were able to launch .gay three years ago. I’m so proud of the people in our company who made this happen. The very existence of .gay, and its potential to be a fresh new space to share gay joy and to show support of global communities is enticing. GoDaddy Registry is the right company to take .gay onto its next phase of growth, and we will be rooting them on, every step of the way.”

Earlier this year, GoDaddy CEO Aman Bhutani signed the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ pledge, joining a coalition of more than 2,400 CEOs across the U.S. who have committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the workplace. The addition of .gay domains to GoDaddy Registry is just the latest in a long line of efforts to celebrate and support diverse communities.

“Partnering with .gay helps us proudly contribute to the visibility and empowerment of the community with the goal of fostering representation and inclusion that enables LGBTQIA+ success, inspiration and confidence,” said Kristy Lilas, Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at GoDaddy. “We recognize that .gay is more than just a domain extension – it’s a powerful investment in equity for all LGBTQIA+ people.”

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. September 19, 2023 /3BL/ – A new survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by The Harris Poll and released by Action Against Hunger, provides new insight into American views on the way climate change is impacting food security, including rising food prices in the U.S. and growing food shortages around the world.

The research found that 78% of Americans say rising food prices are making it harder for them to afford groceries and 72% believe that climate change is already contributing to rising food prices in the U.S. Women (81%) are more likely than men (74%) to report being impacted by rising food prices, as are Hispanic and Black (non-Hispanic) Americans (84% each) than their white peers (75%).

“The climate crisis is a hunger crisis and now is the time to scale up sustainable solutions to help those who are most vulnerable. Advocacy is one key to lasting change and it is important for policymakers to understand how much Americans care about hunger as an urgent issue,” said Dr. Charles E. Owubah, CEO of Action Against Hunger. “This research found that 90% of Americans say access to healthy, affordable food is a basic human right. Yet, around the world, nearly one in 10 people go to bed hungry every night.”

The survey was conducted in advance of New York Climate Week and found that a vast majority of Americans want greater government action on climate change to address food insecurity at home and abroad, with striking differences by race and ethnicity:

Views on the issue within the U.S.

77% of Americans agree that the U.S. government must do more to combat climate change to prevent food prices from continuing to rise. Non-Hispanic Black (83%) and Hispanic (81%) Americans are more likely to agree than are their White counterparts (72%).Women (79%) are more likely to agree than men (74%).

How Americans view the global issue

72% of Americans believe climate change is already creating shortages of key foods in low- and middle- income countries.Women (74%) are more likely to agree than men (70%).57% of Americans say richer countries like the U.S. should help low-income countries pay for the costs of adapting to climate change, similar to the 56% who agreed in 2019.That number rises to 70% among Hispanics and 61% among Black non-Hispanic adults (vs. 51% of Whites).Younger Americans, ages 18 – 34, are significantly more likely to agree on the need for so-called “loss and damages” than those ages 45 and older (67% vs. 50%).

When it comes to food security and climate change, parents see things differently. In contrast to those who do not have children under 18, parents of children under age 18 are more likely to agree that:

The U.S. government must do more to combat climate change to prevent food prices from continuing to rise: 80% vs. 75%.Climate change is already creating shortages of key foods in low- and middle-income countries 76% vs. 70%.Richer countries, like the U.S., should help low-income countries pay for the costs of adapting to climate change: 61% vs. 55%.It is possible to end global hunger in their lifetimes: 60% vs. 51%.

“This research shows that the American public is already feeling the impacts of the climate crisis, from our local grocery stores and dinner tables to our wallets. That’s why we need greater investments in climate-smart agriculture to protect global food supplies and especially to help vulnerable farming communities become more resilient,” Dr. Owubah said.

“The survey also found that 54% of Americans believe it is possible to end global hunger in their lifetime. Now, we need to mobilize the other 46% with confidence in this cause. We have the know-how and cost-effective approaches not only to treat malnutrition, but to prevent hunger in the first place.”

Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Action Against Hunger from August 1-3, 2023, among 2,064 adults ages 18 and older. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within + 2.7 percentage points using a 95% confidence level.

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Sept. 19, 2023 /3BL/ – Unprecedented innovation across planning, policy and technology is required to achieve California’s net-zero goal by 2045, according to a new paper by Edison International. Countdown to 2045: Realizing California’s Pathway to Net Zero makes it clear that the electric grid must expand rapidly and integrate new clean energy technologies, such as offshore wind turbines, clean hydrogen, carbon capture and vehicle-to-grid connectivity, well before the deadline in 22 years.

The scale of electrification needed to decarbonize the economy is dramatic. Countdown to 2045 — announced at Climate Week NYC — forecasts that electricity demand will rise by more than 80%, with 90% of vehicles and 95% of buildings being electrified by 2045 to achieve California’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% from 1990 levels. Through a detailed analysis into grid reliability, Edison International foresees that the state will need an unprecedented pace of clean energy infrastructure buildout.

“The stakes are higher than they have ever been for expanding the electric system to meet decarbonization goals safely, reliably and affordably,” said Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International. “While today’s available technologies can achieve significant reduction, policies must encourage greater investment in emerging technologies and enable more options to meet California’s net-zero goal.”

The paper assesses the scale of the path forward and calls for immediate action. Some highlights include:

The average household will save on energy costs. Because of reduced fossil fuel spending and the greater efficiency of electric vehicles and appliances, the average Southern California Edison customer will see a savings of about 40% in household energy expenses by 2045.The grid must support the use of three times more utility-scale clean energy sources than today.Investing must accelerate in emerging clean energy technologies that complement solar generation and energy storage, as they must comprise up to 15% of total utility-scale resources.New transmission and distribution grid projects must be added at up to four times and 10 times their historical rates, respectively. The state will require about $370 billion of incremental transmission, distribution and utility-scale clean-energy investments.Significant reform in planning, permitting and siting processes is required to expedite the buildout.

Countdown to 2045 calls for an additional approximately 90 gigawatts (GW) of utility-scale clean generation and around 25 GW of utility-scale energy storage plus more than 15 GW each of behind-the-meter solar and storage.

This paper is an update to SCE’s 2019 Pathway 2045. A key driver for the refreshed analysis is California’s Assembly bill 1279, which made the state’s net-zero goal into law last year and established a deeper requirement for direct reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. While AB 1279 calls for a feasibility evaluation by 2035, Countdown to 2045 identifies several feasibility challenges that must be taken into consideration quickly, before 2035, as part of the state’s ongoing evaluation of options to meet decarbonization goals.

Edison is committed to helping California reach its ambitious goal to mitigate the impacts of climate change and sees this set of approaches as a model for other states and nations. The accelerating effects of climate change include extreme weather events taking place across the country. According to 2023 NOAA data, so far this year, the U.S. alone has seen 23 climate-related disasters that cost at least $1 billion each, surpassing the previous annual record of 22 events in 2020.
