The Home Depot secured its third consecutive Partner of the Year Award which continues to help customers save water by making more than 6,000 WaterSense product models affordable and accessible in more than 2,000 stores across the U.S.

This past year, all toilets, bathroom faucets and showerheads sold in U.S. Home Depot stores were WaterSense models. The Home Depot estimates that its customers’ purchases of WaterSense products in its fiscal year 2022 helped reduce annual water consumption by more than 33 billion gallons. This is roughly a savings of more than $686 million on water bills.

The company also worked with utilities to make more than 500 local rebates available, offered instant rebates at more than 760 stores and worked with the Texas government to promote tax-free weekends for ENERGY STAR appliances and WaterSense products. The Home Depot ensures that its employees understand the savings and benefits of WaterSense products. They include information in online training modules, a pocket guide for store associates, the retailer’s merchant handbook, and in a quarterly newsletter sent to all U.S. associates.

PARIS and NEW YORK, October 5, 2023 /3BL/ – EcoVadis, the leading provider of business sustainability ratings, today announces the addition of a new feature, the EcoVadis Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Data Exchange, into its Carbon Action Module (CAM) to unlock PCF tracking across its network of suppliers, of which 40,000 are engaged in carbon action. PCF Data Exchange overcomes a key barrier to carbon reduction strategies – reporting GHG emissions for the actual products and services purchased across the supply chain – and helps change the way organizations engage on a decarbonization journey with their trading partners.

Most suppliers who begin to measure carbon emissions start by reporting their overall carbon footprint. However, they often serve multiple customers with a wide range of products and services. This creates a challenge for buyers: they lack precise enough data to know which portion of the supplier’s emissions relate to their specific purchases. PCF solves this by specifying more precisely the greenhouse gas emissions generated by a product over the different stages of its life cycle. EcoVadis’ PCF solution follows the global standard for product-level emissions accounting and exchange as defined by the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT).

The partnership enables organizations to shift from industry averages to precise, actual emissions data tied to their product mix. A giant leap forward in Scope-3 accuracy, PCF enables precise year-over-year emissions tracking, empowering organizations to identify practical and specific reduction steps at the product-level.

As a PACT Collaborator, the EcoVadis PCF Data Exchange solution uses the PACT Pathfinder Framework and the globally recognized standards it is built upon. EcoVadis brings the benefits of this collaboration to customers, enabling greater emissions transparency and an easy exchange of reliable product carbon-footprint information across organizations, supply chain tiers, industries, and stakeholders.

“As the climate crisis worsens, more organizations are recognizing their role in mitigating its effects by engaging suppliers to measure and cut emissions to meet decarbonization targets and to align with industry and global goals,” said Julia Salant, general manager, carbon solution at EcoVadis. “Product carbon footprint data is the holy grail of carbon reporting. It’s the next step for organizations to accelerate their carbon maturity journey through precise measurement and management of emissions, helping organizations make a positive impact on the planet.”

PCF Data Exchange is part of the EcoVadis Carbon Action Module, a solution designed to build supplier carbon maturity, a prerequisite to start reporting on PCF. CAM scorecards and tools measure, benchmark, and help suppliers build knowledge and management capacity, from “Beginner” and “Intermediate” all the way up to the “Advanced” or “Leader” levels needed to start reporting PCF. It also encourages suppliers to adopt best practices such as life-cycle assessments (LCA), setting science-based targets, public reporting through CDP, and more.

Core benefits of EcoVadis’ CAM solution with PCF Data Exchange allow organizations to:

Request and collect PCF data from suppliers and work collaboratively to identify specific reduction opportunities and actions.Build supplier capability with a dedicated EcoVadis Academy course on PCF fundamentals.Compare PCF data across their supplier network using globally recognized standards.

Suppliers can:

Enhance understanding of PCF with a dedicated EcoVadis Academy course.Report and share PCF data securely through the EcoVadis network, in line with global standards.Gain insights to identify and guide emissions reductions at the most impactful points in the product or service life cycles.

For more information about how Carbon Action Module with Product Carbon Footprint Data Exchange can unlock a new level of Scope-3 decarbonization, please visit www.ecovadis.com/solutions/carbon, or contact EcoVadis.

Onisha and her sons, 14-year-old Jasaun and 9-year-old Zykail, used to rent an apartment in a neighborhood where she didn’t feel safe. After years of overpriced rent payments and being unable to purchase a home on the open market, Onisha says becoming a part of Habitat for Humanity’s BuildBetter with Whirlpool program is a perfect fit.

Owning a home will “bring stability to me and my boys,” she says. “Not only that, but it will teach us that we can get anything in life as long as we try.”

Onisha applied and was accepted into Habitat for Humanity of Horry County’s homeownership program. Her affordable mortgage through Habitat’s BuildBetter program gives Onisha the opportunity to provide a safe and stable home for her boys. Providing security through a new Habitat home will make a huge difference in the lives of everyone in her family.

Raised by her grandmother and her aunt, Onisha says motherhood and faith hold even more importance in her life. Having experienced many personal trials and tribulations, she has kept God at the center of her life, never giving up hope. That positive outlook helped her to work through her local Habitat’s homebuyer program with ease and determination. By fulfilling her 300 sweat-equity hours — the time future Habitat homeowners spend building their homes and the homes of others — she has learned how to install vinyl siding and other important skills.

Onisha’s three-bedroom, two-bathroom home has energy-efficient doors, windows, heating and cooling system, insulation, and more. The family also received an energy-efficient refrigerator and range, which Whirlpool Corporation donates to every Habitat-built home in North America. Onisha says the appliances her home was equipped with are the nicest she has ever had. She said that having clean appliances that work is a huge upgrade, and her energy bill has been reduced significantly since she moved into her new home. Through good times and difficult times, Onisha’s family has been there to support her, and this includes her new Habitat family of volunteers and supporters. To Onisha, home is a place to live and enjoy life to its fullest. It’s a place to feel safe.

The BuildBetter with Whirlpool initiative is an expansion of Habitat’s existing BuildBetter program, which will build more than 250 climate-resilient and energy-efficient homes across the country, with a goal of delivering an almost 15 percent increase in energy efficiency compared to conventional homes. The program will help hundreds of families in need of affordable housing over three years.

Antibiotics have transformed health care and saved countless lives. But rising levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can make current antibiotics less effective. There’s no simple solution to the complex problem of AMR, but we’re committed to investing our expertise and resources alongside our partners to get antibiotics to those who need them most. Lives are at risk, and the time to act is now.

Through this groundbreaking partnership of over 20 leading pharmaceutical companies, philanthropies and organizations, we aim to bridge the gap between the innovative early antibiotic pipeline and patients. True to our legacy of preventing and treating infectious diseases, we’re proud of our commitment to invest $100 million over 10 years in the AMR Action Fund. The fund’s collective goal is to bring two to four novel antibiotics to patients and physicians by 2030.

As of early 2023, the AMR Action Fund has invested in five small biotech companies advancing research for new medicines to fight some of the most dangerous bacteria as determined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

Here are five reasons collaborative efforts are key to addressing AMR:

01.

New antibiotics are urgently needed; however, there are relatively few in development.

The future of antibiotic innovation is at serious risk. Major scientific, regulatory and economic challenges discourage innovation in antibiotics, resulting in a decline in the number of companies conducting antimicrobial R&D. Recognizing there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem, our company and others have suggested a series of policy reforms across several regions of the world. However, time is running out. We need collaboration from policymakers to help antibiotic innovation flourish for decades to come.

02.

Once new antibiotics are approved, they need to be used responsibly.

At Merck, we’re making significant investments to support antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), a broad term for the implementation of evidence-based policies to slow resistance to current antimicrobials. Our investments and partnerships help hospitals around the world develop and implement patient-centered AMS programs that are customized locally based on factors like epidemiology, clinical setting and resource availability to support the responsible prescribing and use of antimicrobials. We also provide significant grant funding to support a wide range of AMS initiatives and collaborations.

Some of our global contributions to AMS include:

Supporting the development of several AMS Centers of Excellence throughout the world.Helping public health leaders effectively monitor and address emerging AMR infections, promote AMS and customize accepted AMS strategies to meet local needs.Providing significant grant-funding for numerous investigator-initiated AMS research projects.

03.

Tracking resistance trends and using data to help doctors prescribe the right medicines remains critical.

Our company has been tracking global resistance trends for over 20 years. This data helps doctors prescribe the right medicines. One of the largest and longest-running AMR surveillance programs, our Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART) program has collected nearly 500,000 Gram-Negative bacterial isolates from around 220 sites in more than 60 countries since 2002.

We’re also a partner of the AMR Register, a first-ever online platform that allows pharmaceutical companies to securely share data on infection-causing pathogens with researchers, national governments and multilateral organizations working to fight AMR.

04.

AMR extends beyond human health.

The challenge of AMR is multifaceted, and a One Health approach to creating policies is critical to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment.

When it comes to animal health, vaccines can help minimize the need for antibiotics. Merck Animal Health is one of the largest manufacturers of animal health vaccines, supplying over 102 billion doses each year.

Protecting the environment through responsible manufacturing is another key component of the One Health approach. We work with our partners in the AMR Industry Alliance to inform science-based manufacturing standards to help ensure scrutiny of industry manufacturing supply chains.

05.

The time to act against AMR is now.

With collaboration across the scientific community and policymakers, AMR is preventable.

We all have a role to play as we prepare for the next health crisis. We must act now to put measures in place to ensure we have the antibiotics we need.

“AMR is not a future problem — it’s here now, threatening human, animal and environmental health as we know it. We must take swift, collaborative action to help reduce the risk of AMR before it’s too late,” said Jennifer Zachary, executive vice president and general counsel at Merck and member of the Global Leaders Group on AMR.

Entergy recently had the privilege of hosting 35 students from New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School at the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers’ annual conference in New Orleans. Entergy was a conference sponsor and hosted a booth in their Career and Academic Expo, where employees shared information with conference attendees about career opportunities at the company for students and professionals with STEM backgrounds.

Entergy’s participation in the conference was spearheaded by Alicia Jones, manager of policy and performance for Entergy’s chief security officer organization, who is a great example of how a background in a STEM field can open doors to a variety of career paths. Though she now works in cybersecurity, Jones’ education background is in chemistry and physics, holding a doctorate degree in chemical physics and a master’s degree in physics. Jones became involved with NOBCChE during graduate school through her mentor, Dr. William Jackson, who was a founder of the organization.

“NOBCChE is the organization that got me to the place that I am today, so when I knew NOBCChE was coming to New Orleans for their annual convention, I knew that I wanted Entergy to be a part of that,” said Jones. “I wanted us to help to bring young people to the conference to help them to see many black and brown faces of scientists and engineers in STEM, and I wanted us to be seen by working professionals as a place that they could come and contribute.”

The organization held its first annual meeting in New Orleans in 1973, so it was only fitting that they celebrated their 50th year by holding the conference in the city where they got their start. It also presented the perfect opportunity for Jones to pay it forward by introducing a new generation of students to the organization and to all the possibilities that are available with a STEM education.

Jones rallied employees across the company, including the integrated customer organization and diversity and workforce strategies teams, to leverage the opportunity for Entergy while creating a unique and meaningful experience for the students from the New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School.

The students had the opportunity to directly interact with more than a dozen scientists and engineers from academia and industry – including two of Entergy’s nuclear engineers. They also watched a chemist “testify” as an expert in forensics science at a mock trial; spoke with scientists about the challenges they face as a minority in STEM; and spoke with representatives from academia and industry about what they were looking for while trying to recruit students and working professionals.

“The conference was truly a transformative experience for our students,” said New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School chemistry teacher Kim Conner-Davis. “They were thrilled to meet scientists from Entergy and engage in conversations with conference leaders, as well as participate in engaging workshops on forensics and perform hands-on experiments. The interactive sessions allowed the students to expand their knowledge and gain practical insights into prospective STEM fields of interest.”

Entergy’s diversity and workforce strategies team is working with Conner-Davis to stay in touch with her students about future career awareness and development opportunities as they progress through their education and careers.
