by Shareholder Advocacy Team, Trillium Asset Management

We at Trillium believe that diversity, inclusive of gender and race, is an essential component of sound governance and essential to a well-functioning organization. As a financial firm, we seek to achieve diversity at all levels and seek to invest in companies that are doing the same.

There should be no doubt that diverse Boards, C-Suites and workforces supported by an inclusive work environment lead to better business outcomes. Studies by McKinsey & Company, The Wall Street Journal, ISS Analytics, and others confirm consistent correlation between diversity on boards and in senior leadership ranks and improved shareholder value, higher levels of innovation or positive financial measures.

We also know environments that foster a culture that welcomes diverse perspectives is critical to a healthy economy and democracy. The #MeToo movement, the Women’s March, the removal of confederate monuments, kneeling NFL players and other efforts both large and small have helped amplify questions and deeper discussion about how we treat women, and racial and ethnic minorities in our communities, workplaces, and schools. These events show us that no industry is immune to the consequences of workplace inequality and underlined the need for companies to measure and report useful investor information on their progress to build inclusive workplaces.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas, December 5, 2023 /3BL/ – Sea Turtle Inc. is protecting the environment and marine life with their newly installed UV water purification and silo system, thanks to a sustainability grant from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club.

Sea Turtle Inc. will soon open a new 15,000-square-foot hospital, which will be the largest fully enclosed sea turtle rehabilitation facility in the world, doubling their patient intake capacity. The neighboring Laguna Madre is a natural water source with both naturally occurring and man-made toxins, bacteria and pathogens that can further sicken the hospitalized sea turtles.

Until recently, the organization relied on chlorine to kill any potential pathogens in the water, and the existing infrastructure fulfilled only 22 percent of the facility’s needs for on-demand, chemical-free water. The new structure, consisting of a sand filter and two silos with pumps, piping, and a heat/cool system, will safely clean more than 250,000 gallons of recycled water from Laguna Madre. Green Mountain Energy Sun Club donated nearly $145,000 to fund this initiative, which will meet 100 percent of the facility’s needs, further supporting the hospital expansion for endangered sea turtles.

“At Green Mountain Energy, we support projects that advance sustainability with our Sun Club program,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager for Green Mountain Energy. “We look forward to helping Sea Turtle Inc. save even more turtles in the coming years.”

With help from customers and employees, Green Mountain Energy Sun Club has advanced sustainability by donating more than $13 million to 156 nonprofit organizations across Texas and the Northeast. Sun Club® supports projects related to renewable energy, sustainability education and environmental stewardship.

“Sea Turtle Inc. is dedicated to not only the conservation and care of sea turtles but to the protection of our waterways,” said Wendy Knight, chief executive officer for Sea Turtle Inc. “This new sustainable water purification system will allow us to have on-demand access to the water required to save these amazing animals while protecting the ecosystem.”

The new UV system eliminates the use of chemicals, which is healthier for wildlife, better for the environment, and reduces purification time from three days to two hours, saving $10,000 annually to reallocate to life-saving care for endangered sea turtles.

Sea Turtle, Inc. was founded in 1977 by Ila Fox Loetscher, better known as “The Turtle Lady of South Padre Island.” In 1999, Sea Turtle, Inc. moved from Ila’s backyard into its current location. Originally this organization was formed to aid in the protection and recovery of the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.

Their mission has since expanded into three parts: to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles; educate the public; and assist with conservation efforts for all marine turtle species. In the last 10 years alone, Sea Turtle Inc. has protected or intervened to aid more than 80,000 sea turtles along 50 miles of the south Texas coast.

Gen donates $424K to nonprofits on Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a holiday tradition for us here at Gen. Every year, we look for ways to inspire team members to take part in the campaign, which encourages people everywhere to support the causes and organizations that mean the most to them. This year was no different.

On November 28, we offered a 2:1 Donation Match to team members across the company, and more than 300 people jumped at the chance to increase their impact. Between employee contributions and our matching donations, we collectively donated $424,000 to nearly 430 causes. We’re also incredibly proud that every person on our Leadership Team donated.

The organizations we supported were wide ranging and international in scope. Nadační fond MUŽI PROTI RAKOVINĚ, a nonprofit in the Czech Republic pushing for early detection of prostate cancer, and the International Committee of the Red Cross were two of the most funded causes this year.

More than half of employees participate in Giving@Gen

This effort comes on the heels of another important milestone for us: the one-year anniversary of the Gen Giving Hub platform launch, powered by Benevity. We launched the Gen Giving Hub after we came together as a new company in November 2022, and it has come to exemplify the thriving culture of giving that we enjoy all year long. In just eight months – April through November – 55% of Gen team members participated in our Giving@Gen program.

To honor this one-year anniversary moment, Gen rewarded each employee with $50 to donate to a charity of their choice over a 10-day campaign. More than 2,000 team members supported their favorite causes, resulting in donations to 916 causes. These included organizations supporting those affected by the conflict in Israel and Gaza, as well as military veterans in the United States, cancer patients in the Czech Republic, global LGBTQ+ safe spaces, and many more. Thanks to our teams, this campaign contributed upwards of $135,500 to high-impact nonprofits.

Supporting our local communities this holiday season

Many of our sites are planning to keep this momentum going by planning local, holiday-inspired donation drives and service projects throughout December. In Dublin, team members are collecting food and essential items for donation to The Capuchin Centre and offering multiple opportunities to volunteer their time. Our American offices are working with Family Giving Tree and the Salvation Army on gift drives for those in need. Our Czech Republic sites are organizing gift and clothing drives with organizations including Dejme detmi sance (“Give Kids a Chance”), Jeziskova Vnoucata (“Santa’s Grandchildren”) and FriendShip Prague. Team members in Chennai are supporting Bhumi, which works to transform disadvantaged communities in India through education.

We are so proud of the generosity of our team members and the many ways they supported their communities this year.

We wish you a joyful and impactful holiday season — from all of us at Gen.

The world is watching as tens of thousands of leaders gather for the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) at Expo City in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 12. The primary goal is to negotiate agreements that will limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The conference participants face complex challenges as they strive to turn these aspirations into concrete action. Amidst the vibrant backdrop of Dubai, the objective stands tall: to ensure that all nations, particularly the less affluent, aren’t disproportionately burdened in pursuing a sustainable world. Yet, can these ambitious goals truly be achieved?

The UN Climate Change Conference is a platform for governments to collaborate on creating policies against rising global temperatures and confronting the consequences of climate change. Over the years, these gatherings have shown progress, but many say they are too slow in creating tangible results. Recent assessments suggest a potential warming of 3 degrees Celsius, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to achieve the crucial 1.5-degree target.

COP28 aims to be more than just another meeting; it seeks to serve as a significant moment where the international community reflects on and evaluates the progress made since the 2015 Paris Agreement. Above all, it represents a critical self-assessment, examining what actions are required to bridge the gap by 2030.

SAP Promotes Sustainable Innovation: Making Progress Together

SAP is participating in COP28 and advocating for ambitious policy action and the adoption of technology for corporate sustainability management. Through the active participation of CEO and Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE Christian Klein, SAP Chief Marketing & Solutions Officer and Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE Julia White, and Chief Sustainability and Commercial Officer Sophia Mendelsohn, SAP showcases its critical role in advancing sustainability. SAP underscores its commitment to climate action by engaging in nearly 70 initiatives during COP28 on various fronts like carbon accounting, climate justice, and the circular economy.

Businesses of every stripe are reshaping their processes and how they operate to not only adjust to increasing regulation but to thrive in an era demanding zero emissions. “SAP’s customers generate 87% of the world’s global commerce, about US$46 trillion. That puts us in a unique position in which we play a critical role in the global economic ecosystem,” says Mendelsohn. “SAP can help 87% of total global commerce organize its supply chain, transportation, and financial data in a way that enables a circular and net zero economy.”

A recent study conducted by SAP revealed a significant advantage for businesses that proactively incorporate sustainability into their strategies, surpassing those that merely respond to external pressures. SAP’s solutions can help by streamlining data collection, enabling comprehensive analysis, sharing standardized data, and seamlessly integrating sustainability measures into core business processes. This transparency and integration can empower businesses to effectively navigate regulatory landscapes and make well-informed, sustainable decisions across their entire value chain.

SAP’s advocacy of managing carbon, fostering collaborative supply chain ecosystems, and supporting local initiatives in combating climate change and societal challenges exemplifies its strategic priorities driving this significant global shift towards sustainability. This underscores the urgency for all companies, regardless of size or industry, to prioritize sustainability. Climate change poses an unparalleled challenge that necessitates collective effort – a challenge no single entity can tackle alone.

That’s why SAP is working with a broad set of partners for sustainability. Alicia Lenze, global marketing head of Sustainability Marketing at SAP, says, “Collaborating with our global sustainability ecosystem is essential to our customer success. We work with partners of all kinds – institutional, strategic, consulting, and technology – to achieve our sustainability goals together. We actively engage with institutional partners such as The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and We Mean Business (WMB) to demonstrate how we are helping companies take concrete actions to tackle climate change.”

SAP also strives to be a trusted sustainability partner to governments, international organizations, and civil society. By fostering meaningful relationships, SAP drives climate action through technology and advocates for effective climate policies and youth inclusion in a just transition. COP28 is an opportunity for governments to implement a balanced approach to addressing climate challenges, combining mitigation and adaptation with crucial technological support. “I’m hopeful for an ambitious and impactful set of outcomes, which will send a strong signal to all stakeholders, including businesses, that we need to act with urgency and scale to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement for our people and planet,” says Pete Selfridge, head of Global Government Affairs at SAP.

Empowering Change Through Education and Youth Action

SAP University Alliances is teaming up with Abu Dhabi University to host a special Academic Community Conference. Dr. Karina Edmonds, senior vice president and global head of SAP Academies and University Alliances, will lead the talks, focusing on the critical mix of education, sustainability, and technology. This partnership aims to teach the next generation of leaders, equipping them to navigate and work in our changing world. “Engaging academia and youth in SAP’s sustainability efforts is paramount. We are very proud to team up with our academic partners and innovation ecosystem during COP28 to facilitate dialogue around the power of emerging technologies in addressing climate change and its impact,” says Edmonds.

SAP also focuses on climate justice initiatives, particularly empowering youth through events like the Green Rising Showcase and Youth to the Table’s COP28 Collaborator Roundtable, highlighting the significance of youthful involvement in shaping a sustainable and equitable future. The private sector plays a big role in climate justice by bringing people together, speaking up, teaching new skills, and giving resources. Projects like Green Rising aim to involve 10 million young people in climate action. Ensuring youth representation in decision-making forums is vital for inclusive policies.

Climate justice is a critical element in addressing the challenges posed by climate change on a global scale. It emphasizes the need to tackle the uneven effects it has on various regions and populations, particularly those that are more susceptible. Projections suggest that by 2050, approximately 1.2 billion individuals could face displacement due to climate-related disasters, underlining the pressing need for action. These forecasts also indicate heightened health risks for nearly all of the world’s 2 billion children, potentially resulting in a 20% increase in malnutrition cases. Among the most affected are young people whose futures might encounter disruptions amidst these unfolding crises.

COP28 marks an important moment for global action on climate change. It represents an opportunity for collective effort, emphasizing the need for collaboration and a shared commitment to addressing this critical issue. SAP’s engagement goes beyond mere attendance – it entails spearheading initiatives toward a sustainable future, encouraging collective responsibility, innovation, and progress.

Lt. Gen. Michael K. Nagata, U.S. Army (Ret.) learned from a young age that behind every challenge lies an opportunity.

Growing up in Hawaii after his family moved to the United States from Japan in the 1930s, Nagata encountered challenges as a Japanese American. Despite the adversity, he discovered a sense of purpose through his commitment to serving his country.

In 1982, Nagata enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in the infantry and later received his Officer’s Commission through Officer Candidate School. His military career spanned 38 years, 34 of which were spent in Special Operations. Through his staunch perseverance and patriotism, Nagata led his team to greatness in roles including the Special Mission Unit commander of multiple Joint Special Operations Forces (SOF) task forces, Deputy Director for Special Operations and Counterterrorism, and commander of the U.S. Special Operation Command Central (SOCCENT).

According to Nagata, “One of the most important parts of leadership is encouraging the integration of a team in which the whole can become more than the sum of its parts.” As a Special Mission Unit Squadron Commander, Nagata was involved in the initial combat deployments after the 9/11 attacks. In the days following the tragedy, Nagata recalls witnessing his team and the nation become more integrated and unified than ever before.

After a remarkable career of selfless service, Nagata retired in 2019 from his final active duty position as director of Strategy for the National Counterterrorism Center, as a three-star general. In December 2019, Nagata joined CACI as a Strategic Advisor and senior vice president, contributing to the company’s critical pursuit to defend national security and prevent devastation like what was experienced on that morning in September 2001.

At CACI, Nagata advises on and assists efforts to advance the company’s contributions to national security, support the development of its corporate strategy, and enhance key client relationships.  Since taking his current position, Nagata has sought to aid CACI in meeting and exceeding customers’ expectations, often before they fully realize all that they need.

“The most exhilarating part of CACI for me has been our culture of ‘investing ahead of need,’” Nagata said. “Not just as a successful business proposition, but as a way of ensuring our national security customers are far more likely to get faster and more effective capabilities and solutions than would otherwise be possible.”

Nagata attributes much of his early career success to the senior officers who were willing to take a chance on him. He learned through his service experience that fear of change can be transformed into fuel for success.

With these life-lessons in mind, Nagata now encourages leaders across CACI to work more collaboratively and provide opportunities to take on challenging, rewarding everyday work.

“I am so glad to be a part of a company whose focus and most important work directly contributes to the mission that I was once a part of. This is the embodiment of continuing your mission,” he said.

CACI is committed to hiring and retaining veteran employees as a long-standing part of its corporate culture. Explore careers that provide limitless potential for veterans at CACI.

International Olympic Committee news

The Olympic Games Paris 2024 are already providing tangible social legacies to all layers of French society, benefitting millions of people, businesses and communities throughout the country, an interim evaluation report of the Paris 2024 legacies says.

The report has been produced by a group of experts from the Centre de Droit et d’Economie du Sport (CDES) of Limoges, the Pluricité group and the Phare Agency, and has been complemented by the Ipama and Sport 1.5. It follows new guidelines from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), developed to help measure the long-term impacts of global events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In line with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s strategic roadmap, Olympic Agenda 2020, the Paris 2024 Legacy & Sustainability strategy has set out to establish a new model for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, pledging to deliver an ambitious event that is socially responsible, more sustainable and inclusive.

“Paris 2024 will represent a ‘new era’ of Olympic Games,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “These will be the first Games to be planned and delivered in line with the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020, with a central ambition to create a lasting, positive legacy. This interim evaluation shows that this legacy is already bringing tangible social benefits to the host communities and beyond, even before the opening of the Games.”

The Interim Evaluation Report on the Legacy & Sustainability strategy of Paris 2024 analyses the social and environmental impact of the Paris 2024 Games, covering measures carried out up to the summer of 2023.

Actions and initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity among young French people have been particularly successful, the report says.

Sport for health and education

According to the World Health Organization, 80 per cent of young people do not meet the recommended guideline of 60 minutes of physical activity per day for 5-to 17-years-olds.

Meanwhile in France, according to the National Observatory of Physical Activity (ONAPS), 37 per cent of children between 6 and 10 years old and 73 per cent of 11-to-17 year-olds do not reach the recommended 60 minutes.

That is why Paris 2024 joined forces with the French Ministry of National Education and healthcare experts to implement 30 minutes of exercise at school every day.

As a result, 30 minutes of daily physical activity are progressively being introduced in all 36,250 French primary schools. An evaluation from the National Observatory of Physical Activity (ONAPS) in schools that adopted the initiative in the pilot phase (2020 to 2022) shows that 91 per cent of the teachers implementing the 30 minutes of daily physical activity consider that it helps to reduce students’ sedentary lifestyles.

The report reveals that more than 8,700 schools and higher education establishments have been awarded the Génération 2024 label, a seal recognising their collaboration with local sports clubs and local governments to support the development of sports practice.

In addition, 3 million young people have already taken part in the Olympic and Paralympic Weeks (OPW) – an action to promote sport among young people and mobilise the educational community around civic and sporting values in France.

Outside schools, the Bouger Plus programme has benefitted over 600,000 people. Bouger Plus aims to get everyone in France moving and prioritises schoolchildren, women, people with disabilities, senior citizens and groups who tend to be less active or socially excluded.

Sport for cities

The report also highlights the impact sport is having on urban areas, a particular focus of Games organisers.

Through the Terre de Jeux 2024 label, which is awarded to local and regional authorities committed to promoting sport and the Games among local residents, 4,500 cities and regions across France are committed to getting people to be more active on a daily basis.

Paris 2024 teamed up with numerous authorities to help design public spaces in a way that encourages local residents to exercise more frequently. The project has been piloted in six territories, receiving positive feedback from their residents. In one of the pilot towns, Saint-Dizier, 71 per cent of residents said that stairs and newly painted lines in an activity area encourage them to move more in general.

Sport for inclusion

The report also evaluated progress against three major objectives around promoting equality, inclusion and integration, as well as various environmental initiatives.

Key achievements include the establishment of 40 Para sports clubs since 2020, as well as commitment by the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games to create 3,000 inclusive clubs with a Para sports section by 2024.

Sport for climate

Finally, Paris 2024 has taken several measures to accelerate the transformation of sporting events and promote sustainable sport. For example, the Organising Committee, together with the Ministry of Sport and the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, developed a “Climate Coach” app to allow sports event organisers in France to estimate their carbon footprint and reduce their impact. Two months after its launch, some 500 sporting event organisers had used the tool, helping to reduce their footprint by an average 20 per cent.

“Impact 2024” Endowment Fund

A number of the above projects are funded by the Paris 2024 Endowment Fund, the first ever Olympic legacy-focused investment fund to be established before the Games. Together with co-founders, including partners of the Games, it has already provided EUR 47 million in funding for 1,100 grassroots projects across France.

Impact 2024 supports projects that use sport to promote health, well-being, education, inclusion, equality and environmental improvements. Between 2020 and 2023, the Fund has directly benefitted 4.5 million people, 42 per cent of whom are women and 12 per cent are persons living with disabilities.

“The Paris Endowment Fund is a very innovative way to mobilise resources to ensure that the wide-ranging benefits of sport reach people directly in their daily environments: at school, at work and in the cities,” said Tania Braga, IOC Head of Legacy.

New OECD guidelines

The report is the first of three strategy evaluations. Two further instalments will be produced one year (2025) and five years (2029) after the Games.

It is also the first report to be published in accordance with the guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), published In July 2023. Aimed at organisers of cultural, sporting and business events, these guides were drawn up by the OECD in collaboration with the academic community, experts and organisers of major events, foundations, governments, political decision-makers and several international organisations such as the IOC and the World Health Organization (WHO).
