SAINT PAUL, Minn., December 11, 2023 /3BL/ – On December 2, 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a final rule aimed at reducing methane emissions from oil and natural gas operations. Methane is considered a “super pollutant” and is a major contributor to current warming from human activities. This rule aims to make sharp cuts to methane emissions, resulting in near-immediate climate benefits.

The issuance of the Rule updated and strengthened standards for methane and other air pollutants from new, modified, or reconstructed sources. Nearly 1 million comments were received throughout the rulemaking process and the Agency believes that the Rule promotes technical innovation, while allowing the industry time to identify and integrate the necessary equipment or processes required for compliance. The Rule requires frequent monitoring and repair of methane leaks, specifically targeting routine venting and/or flaring from oil wells, storage tanks or vessels, and production facilities, and establishes a program for third-party monitoring of so-called, super-emitters.

Integration of the Rule has been established through the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) under 40 CFR Part 60, Subpart OOOOb (referred to as ‘Quad Ob’) and applies to sources that commenced construction, modification, or reconstruction after December 6, 2022. Existing sources are regulated under 40 CFR Part 60, Subpart OOOOc (Quad 0c). Quad 0c sets forth the guidelines for individual states to adopt, or alternatively, presents the requirements by which states can follow in establishing their own regulations.

Whether a source is new or existing will heavily influence compliance deadlines, as new source requirements go into effect 60 days from rule publication. Compliance for existing sources is required no later than 36 months after the state plans are due to the EPA (due 2 years following Rule publication), thereby providing up to 5 years for existing sources to come into compliance with the Rule.

Questions? Antea Group can assist your Team with the interpretation of the NSPS Rule and help you determine the applicability of the rule and identify compliance obligations. Please contact us today!

To learn more about the new rule, visit the US EPA’s website.

AMD recently partnered with professional soccer team Austin FC, EK Fluid Gaming and two educational organizations to welcome more than 100 students and educational staff for a hands-on day of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning in celebration of National STEM Day in the United States. To participants’ great excitement, the event was hosted at the team’s major league stadium in Austin, Texas.

More than 50 AMD volunteers guided sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Manor New Tech Middle School and Breakthrough Central Texas through the process of building a computer. The students learned how to install AMD RyzenTM 7000 Series CPUs and AMD RadeonTM GPUs along with all the other components to build a PC. Student and volunteer cheers echoed throughout the room as teams powered up their completed systems and witnessed their achievement as the colorful RGB displays started to glow.

“We are honored to partner with local school districts, companies and community leaders and volunteers to provide opportunities to spark creativity and interest in a variety of postsecondary pathways. Through our partnership with AMD, Breakthrough students engage in STEM out-of-school learning, hands-on projects, and have the opportunity to learn about STEM career paths thanks to activities and guidance shared by AMD volunteers. Together, we are helping create first-generation college aspirants and supporting today’s students to become tomorrow’s leader,” remarked Michael Griffith, Executive Director of Breakthrough Central Texas.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, STEM careers are projected to grow nearly 11 percent from 2022-2032, outpacing the rate of non-STEM careers by more than 4 times. With 2022 median wages for STEM careers more than double that of non-STEM careers, AMD wants to help prepare the next generation of students for and help them envision themselves in STEM professions. As part of the company’s Digital Impact goal to benefit 100 million people by 2025, AMD invests in STEM education programs like this computer build to get technology into students’ hands and allow it to ignite imagination and exploration.

“AMD is proud to work with our partners to create an event that highlights the importance of STEM education. This is a great way to introduce students to new careers and new possibilities – all while having fun. We want students to walk away feeling curious and empowered and take that with them throughout their educational journey,” said Susan Moore, Corporate Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Government Affairs at AMD.

The 20 new computer systems assembled at the event will continue to pay it forward as a donation to Manor New Tech Middle School. These computers will support nearly 400 students in their Career and Technical Education Programs, and the students who built them will have the joy of seeing their handiwork inspire other students for years to come.

Read Climate Horizon: Opportunities for a Greener World in the Middle East

The following explores two future perspectives for the decarbonization of the Middle East by 2060, scientifically accounting for multiple uncertain variables which directly alter the region’s future energy demand.

Net Zero Scenario: This scenario takes stock of current commitments from several countries of the Gulf region to reach a net zero economy by mid-century. It explores the role that transformations on the “demand side” of the energy system (energy services) can play in such a pathway.

New Future Scenario: This scenario assumes a more rapid development of new energy services than traditionally anticipated, stemming from both faster technology development and supportive policymaking, i.e., a more radical transformation of the region’s economy, and its impact on the energy system.

Key findings:

As the economy of the region modernizes, it also decarbonizes-resulting in an accelerated decoupling between emissions and economic wealth.Electricity represents 40-55% of final energy demand in both scenarios
Policies driven by governments in the region are more supportive of innovations captured in “New Future” which enables a more rapid scaling up of new services and technology.Around 2/3rd of final energy demand comes from 3 sectors of economic activity: buildings, road mobility, and manufacturing. Clean hydrogen, nuclear energy, and water infrastructure also have a heavy influence on energy demand; each will be additive to energy production as technologies develop.Uncertainty in manufacturing and road mobility plays a significant role in reaching a net zero economy by 2060.
Why this matters:

After decades of research, the global scientific community considers that currently observed global warming is man-made. The pace of change is unprecedented with impacts likely to rapidly materialize. The window of time to transform and secure our economy is steadily closing.

The IPCC also demonstrated that net emissions of carbon dioxide must be zeroed by mid-century (with significant abatement on other greenhouse gases), while they also must be reduced by 30-50 percent by 2030, for the world to remain on a trajectory consistent with a long-term 1.5-degree global warming ambition (SchneiderElectric, 2021a)

LOVELAND, OHIO, December 11, 2023 /3BL/ – For two weeks in November, Fifth Third employees across greater Cincinnati and the Bank’s footprint showed their love for local small businesses by entering them in a sweepstakes to win a $53,000 grant. The Bank is pleased to announce one of the winners is RODI Italian.

“I am so proud of how our local employees showed up big for small businesses this holiday season,” said Tim Elsbrock, Fifth Third regional president in Cincinnati. “RODI Italian is a beloved restaurant in Loveland, and I look forward to seeing how this grant can help them grow their businesses and continue to thrive in their community.”

Fifth Third employees submitted nearly 2,200 entries in the sweepstakes by sharing photos and #love53 on social media. Visit Fifth Third’s Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn to see the entries or follow #love53.

RODI opened in February 2021 and specializes in homemade pastas, Neapolitan pizza, fresh seafood, craft cocktails and local espresso.

“This is a true testament to the wonderful work our team does,” said RODI owner Jo Beyersdorfer. “Everyone is so dedicated and hardworking, and the community is so supportive and embracing. We are honored, and truly appreciate Fifth Third’s dedication to small businesses like ours.”

Fifth Third employee, Corinne Byrd, a Community Reinvestment Act program manager, nominated RODI by posting on her LinkedIn profile. Byrd said she chose the restaurant for the sweepstakes because she had heard how amazing the food was and a friend is the manager.

Byrd went a little further with the Fifth Third love, leaving a $53 tip on her meal. This was another part of Fifth Third’s small business appreciation campaign, for employees in the greater Cincinnati area. Employees could “shop on their time and tip on Fifth Third’s dime.” The tip will be reimbursed by the Bank.
