SWORDS, Ireland, February 14, 2024 /3BL/ – Trane Technologies (NYSE:TT), a global climate innovator, co-developed a round table event at the European Parliament on Advancing Food Loss Technologies and Policies. The round table, hosted by Member of the European Parliament Ms. Rosa D’Amato MEP and promoted in partnership with Sustainable Development Policy Institute Competere, addressed the global impact of food loss and the technologies and solutions required to reduce loss and waste across the food chain.

The round table included discussions on European Union policies and strategies led by Alexandra Nikolakopoulou, Head of Unit DGSANTE of the European Commission and the causes of food loss and waste led by Associate Professor Gyula Kasza. Also taking part in the discussions were representatives from Copa Cogeca, the organization for farmers and agri-cooperatives in the EU, leading European food manufacturers association FoodDrinkEurope, major European retail organization Schwarz Group and surplus food management app-based company Too Good To Go, and Safe Food Advocacy Europe (SAFE), an NGO focused on protecting EU food consumers.

Through dedicated and committed action, Trane Technologies is advancing its 2030 Sustainability Commitments, including the Gigaton Challenge – a pledge to reduce customer greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion metric tons (or, one gigaton). This reduction equates to 2% of the world’s annual emissions – or, the annual emissions of Italy, France and the U.K. combined. The company has also pledged to be net-zero by 2050 and is first in industry to have its near and long-term emissions reduction targets externally validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The awards, which for nearly 20 years have recognized exceptional books about science that engage readers of all ages, this year honor books on subjects ranging from the noises of nature to the scale of the solar system.

Since 2005, Subaru of America and AAAS have partnered to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for young audiences – and to boost their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and inspire the next generation of scientists.

“AAAS believes that, through good science books, this generation, and the next, will have a better understanding and appreciation of science,” said Sarah Ingraffea, the AAAS/Subaru Book Prize Award manager at AAAS.

Awards are given in four categories: Children’s Science Picture Book, Middle Grades Science Book, Hands-on Science Book and Young Adult Science Book. Judging panels composed of librarians, educators, scientists, and literacy experts evaluate each submission according to detailed criteria tailored to each category that include age-appropriateness, scientific accuracy, and the examination of scientific concepts without perpetuating stereotypes or misconceptions.

This year, the judges received a record number of submissions. With today’s announcement, the AAAS/Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books has now honored 76 books and more than 100 authors and illustrators.

The author of each winning book and the illustrator of the children’s book will receive a $1,500 prize and a commemorative plaque.

Whale Fall: Exploring an Ocean-floor Ecosystem captures the end of a whale’s life, during which they silently sink to the ocean floor and become a food source for the dwellers of the deep sea, from sharks to microbes, for many decades to come.

Melissa Stewart has written more than 200 science books for children, including the Sibert Medal Honoree Summertime Sleepers: Animals that Estivate, illustrated by Sarah S. Brannen. She holds a degree in biology from Union College in Schenectady, NY, and a master’s degree in science journalism from New York University. While gathering research for her books, she’s explored tropical rain forests in Costa Rica, gone on safari in East Africa, and swum with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands.

Rob Dunlavey is a fine artist and children’s book illustrator. His recent titles include Whale Fall by Melissa Stewart, In the Woods by David Elliott, and Owl Sees Owl by Laura Godwin. A native of the tall-grass prairie and oak savannas of suburban Chicago, Dunlavey studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Southern Illinois University, and Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. The Sounds of Life explores not just the many sounds created by plants and animals but how groundbreaking technology and traditional knowledge has deepened humanity’s understanding of those sounds – and affirmed our connection with nature.

Karen Bakker was a scholar at the University of British Columbia and entrepreneur who worked at the crossroads of technology and ecology. The author of seven books and more than 100 scholarly articles, Bakker also led The Smart Earth Project, which explores the impacts of digital technologies on environmental sustainability. In a tremendous loss to the many communities of learning she inhabited and impacted, Bakker passed away in August 2023, before this latest recognition for The Sounds of Life.

The shift to clean energy is spiking global demand for commodities including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and other essential minerals and rare earth elements. Mining companies know there is no energy transition without the future-facing commodities and that mining them depends on cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and socially acceptable water stewardship. Hence there is renewed focus on water across the industry. The following outlines two targets, one on the supply side, the other on the usage side, to help miners maximize their water resilience.

Target: Developing Alternative Supplies

Mining companies are accustomed to operating in extremely arid regions and water-stressed communities. Nonetheless, for a host of reasons, they may expect the water scarcity issue to become more acute in the coming decades, driving the need to create a diverse portfolio of sources.

Reuse

The practice of water reuse is in a golden age. Advances in treatment equipment, smarter monitoring and control, and better economics have come together to make it a viable solution to improve water supply reliability when the availability of existing sources is inconsistent. Beyond those benefits, reuse can help companies reduce their energy consumption associated with conveying fresh water to the mine site and mitigate pollution concerns by reducing discharges.

As a pioneer and leader in water resource reclamation and recycling, Black & Veatch delivers research, conceptual, planning, design and operations solutions that make reuse a workable choice for miners. Our experience involving industrial water recycling facilities spans more than 40 years. We know how to implement best-fit advanced treatment technologies to create a predictable supply, decreasing reliance and strain on local and regional surface and groundwater resources while preserving water for communities and other commercial and industrial enterprises.

Desalination

Adoption of desalination as a fresh water supply alternative is on the rise in coastal regions. The obvious case is Chile, which is expected to vastly increase its use of seawater desalination by 2030 to fuel record mining production in the country, while use of continental water is being restricted. With advances in technology, the cost of seawater desalination is often comparable to other sources that require conveyance over long distances. While seawater desalination provides essentially unlimited supply, desalination of saline ground water and reuse of process wastewater provides additional supply, often at lower cost. Meanwhile, Black & Veatch is evaluating new technologies to recover water from hypersaline wastewater from facilities such as tailings storage impoundments and deep bore-hole water

Our desal experience includes the Escondida Water Supply Project for BHP Billiton in Chile, winner of the Industrial Desalination Plant of the Year in the 2017 Global Water Awards. Throughout almost five decades of desalting work, we have designed desalination facilities with a total capacity of more than 1,200 million gallons a day, or about 52,500 liters per second, for potable, industrial and irrigation applications. Our approach considers all design impacts – variable salinities, energy recovery systems, high-recovery membranes, challenging site locations, and more – to engineer desal solutions that deliver the supply needed yet fit seamlessly into existing systems and are flexible for the future.

Target: Doing More with Less Risk

Another target is operations. Systems-focused solutions that can help miners bolster their water resilience include the following.

Water Treatment

Miners need to neutralize acidity; address specific constituents such as sulphates, nitrates, salinity, heavy metals, selenium, etc., scale formation, corrosion, and organics; remove regulated elements such as metals and metalloids; and control toxicity. Supporting the specialized treatment processes miners need, Black & Veatch offers expertise in passive and active biological treatment, precipitation, adsorption onto solids, crystallization, evaporation, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis/nano-filtration. We also specialize in water loss management and complete stormwater management solutions, including diversion, conveyance, pumping stations, and storage.

Modeling

An accurately calibrated water balance model can help miners approach water supply, treatment, recirculation, and disposal processes in an integrated way, creating efficiencies and enhancing productivity. It does so by accounting for process-related water components including inputs, consumption, and outputs. Black & Veatch can develop water balance models to help miners explore their specific scenarios, produce statistical probabilities, and address their water use from a quantity and quality perspective.

Optimization

Black & Veatch can help companies optimize their operations to minimize water usage. One way is through process intensification. It involves using advanced technologies to increase treatment capacity, improve resource recovery and achieve desired water quality while using less energy and fewer chemicals. We can also help miners reduce their water, energy, and chemical consumption by implementing risk-management practices including hazard-and-operability review (HAZOP) as well as failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA).

Digital Water

Data and analytics solutions can realize improvements in capital efficiency, process optimization and cybersecurity via tools including instrumentation, automation, advanced reporting, AI, digital twins and more. The solutions are beneficial to understanding and controlling the entire water portfolio: source water management, leakage mitigation, water resource recovery, water reclamation and purification facility operation, and storage. Through the integration of data gathering, monitoring, and analytics, Black & Veatch can help miners advance their digital water implementation to gain critical insights that enable rapid and confident decision-making.

In a new DE Original, students in grades PK-5 discover the engineering behind the popular Three Little Pigs story and learn how the pigs’ discoveries can be applied to real-life engineering situations.The National Science Foundation: Profiles of Scientists and Engineers channel introduces students to the next generation of engineers and scientists in video profiles of young professionals in the engineering and science fields.The Inventors and Innovators channel features prominent figures in history whose engineering have changed the world. From Thomas Edison and the Wright Brothers to Hedy Lamarr and George Washington Carver and many more, students learn about incredible feats of engineering and science.

In addition, for users of the award-winning Mystery Science service, the Engineering Collection offers open-and-go lessons that inspire students to love science and explore engineering. Mystery Science is an engaging standards-aligned science curriculum for grades K-5 designed to help students stay curious. In this collection of 45-minute engineering lessons, Mystery Guides lead no prep, open-and-go lessons with step-by-step hands-on activities exploring scientific phenomena using common classroom items.

Virtual Field Trips 

The Reach for the Sky Virtual Reality experience from Reach for the Sky – designed with Edge at Hudson Yards – is a one-of-a-kind experience in which students can control their journey and interact with their environment as they explore learning hotspots, visit a weather observation station, and take flight with a drone through the New York City skyline.The virtual field trip with Trane Technologies as part of the Sustainable Futures program gives students a unique, up-close look at how employees across that company are using engineering and other disciplines to create comfortable, clean, and energy-efficient solutions for homes, buildings, and transportation.The Science & Behavior of Safe Driving: It Takes All of Us Virtual Field Trip helps students learn about safe driving as they visit Honda’s one-of-a-kind Automotive Safety Research Facility in Raymond, Ohio and the Driving Simulation Laboratory at The Ohio State University to see the safety and engineering behind vehicle design. This virtual field trip is from Honda Safety Driven, a new national safety program and education initiative empowering students nationwide to use safe driving skills as a roadmap to become responsible decision-makers.

Student Activities and Challenges 

As the nation’s premier middle school science competition, the annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge invites students in grades 5-8 to compete for an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize, and the chance to earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” Each year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge recognizes the grand prize winner, 10 finalists, four honorable mentions, and up to 51 state merit winners – nationwide and in Washington D.C. – who have demonstrated a passion for using science to solve everyday problems and improve the world around them. This year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge offers innovative ways for students to engage in science and engineering through new entry topics, including Robotics, Home Improvement, Automotive, Safety, AR/VR, and Climate Tech. Competition entries are accepted until the deadline on May 2, 2024.With Science Fair Central – a program with The Home Depot® – educators and families discover over 100 science and engineering project starters, student planning guides, judging tools, and hands-on activities that help educators connect STEM learnings. The resources challenge students to design a device using magnetism to fish trash from local waterways, use characteristics of an armadillo’s shell to create an architectural design solution, build catapults and trebuchets for a physics class mini-challenge, experiment with materials to insulate and cool a beverage, and more.

The Big Fact: Microbusiness owners struggle or experience more challenges marketing their business online and knowing what to do at each phase of the business compared to small business owners, according to GoDaddy’s Venture Forward research initiative. By contrast, small business owners experience bigger challenges finding workers with necessary skills, tackling rising costs on wages and materials, and networking with other business owners.

While expanding a venture from microbusiness to small business comes with inherent growing pains, ensuring that microbusiness have the resources they need to get started is essential to their success.

Three biggest challenges for microbusiness and small business owners

Motivational differences: Microbusiness and small business owners listed very different reasons for starting a business.

For Microbusiness owners, this includes the desire to:

Be their own boss (43%). Support a cause or hobby they are passionate about (32%). Have the flexibility a traditional job couldn’t provide (30%). 

By contrast, small business owners who participated in GoDaddy’s American Dream survey listed their top reasons for starting a business as the desire to:

Make extra money (49%). Stay active while being retired (40%). Achieve a dream they’ve always had of starting a business (33%). 

And while the majority of American small business owners believe that being a successful entrepreneur is a key way to create new generational wealth (78%), many maintain modest business aspirations, such as wanting to either stay a ‘solo entrepreneur’ (28%) or remain a small business but with some employees and perhaps a physical location (35%). Only 12% aspire to one day become a corporate business with a large employee base and headquarters.

The research: GoDaddy’s Venture Forward research initiative analyzes more than 20 million online businesses with a digital presence (measured by a unique domain and an active website). Most of these businesses employ fewer than ten people, categorizing each as a microbusiness. While these microbusinesses may be small, their impact on economies is outsized even though they are often too informal or too new to show up in traditional government statistics.

Since 2018, Venture Forward surveyed more than 36,000 small business owners with a digital presence, making it the source for microbusiness data and insights.

His words in this article remind us how much we all have invested in caring for Creation – and how rarely we stop to bask in its glory.

When we integrate a Stewardship ethic into our approach to economics, it can have a powerful influence on the world. Perhaps if we view nature as an essential part of God’s Creation worthy of its own existence, rather than simply as a commodity to be exploited for human gain, we can develop a more holistic stewardship approach. When we reduce the natural world to simple inputs for our economies or assets on the balance sheet – or even impediments and obstacles to overcome – we’re selling Creation short. Alternatively, a deep appreciation for our environment encourages a long-term outlook over short-term profits or growth at all costs. It fosters a sense of our interdependence with nature.
