Schneider Electric

Conrad van Rooyen is the co-founder and general manager of Hexeis, an Australian-based electrical engineering consultancy. Hexeis provides industry-leading energy analysis, monitoring and management solutions and is a certified Schneider Electric Master Power Management EcoXpert Partner.

Over the past decade, there has been an explosion of data. This is especially true in commercial buildings, which have been identified as noble examples of embracing sustainability and decarbonization. The challenge asset and facility managers face now is what to do with these mountains of energy-related information. Raw energy data – data without context – can be confusing. With no perspective, it provides few clues about areas of energy waste or overconsumption. Nor does it provide any evaluation of ways to bring energy bills under control.

Our company, Hexeis, is a Schneider Electric EcoXpert Master Partner in Power Management. In our experience, there are three important elements of data – accuracy, availability, and timeliness. Each impacts the sustainability and carbon footprint of your operations.

Pillar 1: Accuracy of energy data is the starting point

Connected, digitized power meters installed on a building’s key circuits provide large amounts of energy-related data, and their accuracy is vitally important. Any miscalculations during installation can result in potential miscalculations that can persist unnoticed over extended periods.

For example, in providing our customers with digitalization and electrification solutions, we’ve noticed a 20% error rate in meter installations. Within those, we identified 31 potential mistakes. These can range from basic errors like incorrectly programming current transformer (CT) ratios to more elaborate missteps like installing a CT backward. Besides the obvious safety risks, these incorrect meter installations can lead to data issues that cause measurement errors, incorrect billing, operational inefficiencies. It can even jeopardize your sustainability progress.

The importance of accurate energy data even ventures into legal territory, particularly in the context of NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System). This Australian rating system measures the environmental performance of buildings. NABERS helps building owners and managers identify areas to improve their environmental performance and reduce operating costs. Inaccurate meter data can lead to incorrect ratings and potential legal penalties.

Data precision is so important! That’s why, at Hexeis, we use specialized equipment like a portable primary injection tester to verify the installation, performance, and accuracy of our customer’s electrical assets – including current transformers, instrument transformers, and power meters. These tools are critical in all our installations’ maintenance, testing, and commissioning.

Pillar 2: Seamless availability through digital transformation

As more of our customers’ power networks become digitized and connected, data availability and accessibility are becoming increasingly important. They often need to make quick decisions to remain competitive – and the most basic requirement for boosting competitiveness is guaranteeing access to accurate energy data at any moment. Accessing data from smartphones or computers is not just a convenience; it’s mandatory in today’s business environments.

Because of this, we use EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert as a development platform to present meaningful data and automate reporting and notifications. This approach allows us to tailor dashboards to our client’s needs and streamline the information by organizing trends that make it engaging and actionable. Most importantly, it prevents the diminishing returns associated with an overload of visual data. A platform should never make its users feel overwhelmed or disoriented. This is what we call JAD (just another dashboard), and it marks a failure to engage users effectively.

The platform aids in creating a unified, streamlined interface and allows the automation of tasks our clients would traditionally handle themselves. It also gives insight into electrical system health and energy efficiency. This allows customers to make informed decisions about their energy usage. We’ve found that when our customers know their dashboard was explicitly designed for them, they embrace it more quickly to achieve their business success.

Pillar 3: Timeliness for just-in-time, proactive decision-making

So, we have our accurate energy data, and it’s readily accessible. It’s now a matter of getting the right data to the right people at the right time.

Immediate notifications of issues allow for fast, proactive actions. This prevents unnecessary costs and fosters a culture of informed, evidence-based decision-making.

Leveraging a development platform like EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert allows us to streamline task creation and automation. What our clients would otherwise manage individually, they can now handle efficiently, saving resources and simplifying their energy management. They also get real-time performance monitoring and reporting on energy consumption, with immediate alerts that go to the right people when any issues are detected.

As a prime example, one of our university clients faced a regulation J8 challenge and had to install thousands of meters across their campus buildings to measure light and power by tenancy area. Manual readings were impractical, with multiple areas in each building, each with two meters. So, we embraced the obvious choice – digitization and connectivity – and enhanced the EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert’s graphical user interface with additional modules, enabling timely notifications for the management team when lights were left on. Beyond mere compliance, our approach turned a regulatory hurdle into an opportunity for energy efficiency.

This kind of timely data goes beyond surface-level solutions; it’s about understanding the unique dynamics of each space, each meter, and each stakeholder. In this case, we helped our client meet regulatory demands and elevated their power monitoring capabilities.

European financial regulators shed light on the use of “equivalent information” under the EU Taxonomy.

After almost a full year in effect, compliance with the EU Taxonomy for sustainable activities continues to find its feet. As of January, corporate disclosures of eligible sustainable economic activities have been mandatory.

However, one persistent shortcoming remains with the lack of consistent and accurate corporate reporting (detailed in an earlier GreenBiz article). Although reporting volumes have increased, company disclosure data for EU Taxonomy eligibility and alignment criteria remain elusive, according to a Bloomberg analysis, as shown in the chart.

Rayonier was honored to welcome Terry Baker and Sam Cook to speak to Rayonier employees recently about their experiences as black leaders in the forestry industry. The table talk was one of Rayonier’s DEI education events in celebration of Black History Month.

Terry is CEO of the Society of American Foresters and Sam is NC State University’s executive director of Forest Assets and VP of the Natural Resources Foundation for the College of Natural Resources. Both of them shared personal stories from their careers and lessons they have learned. Then they answered questions from the audience.

Terry explained that it can be difficult for students of color to enter a profession in which there are few leaders that look like them, which contributed to his decision to take the helm at SAF. In fact, he recalled, a black student on a Zoom call actually began to cry when he saw that Terry also was black.

“He was in that level of shock because the last face he expected to see was one with a similar skin tone to his.”

Asked how to reach the younger generation and inspire them to consider forestry, Terry advised, “Show up where they are, make that intentional effort to be in their space and to ask them questions about themselves, who they are and what their aspirations are.”

Sam agreed, adding, “I feel a responsibility to get kids to recognize that there is a career in this space for them. There’s not one person that would come to me that I don’t find a way to help. Kids are just looking for an opportunity to sit down and have that conversation.”

What’s in: Prioritizing your health

What’s out: Forgetting about preventive health.

When it comes to the ins and outs of knowing the connections between diabetes and heart disease, it can be confusing. People with diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease because of their chronic disease1 — but there are things you can do to protect the heart.

Here is our “In and Out” list that can help guide what you do to lower your risk for heart disease if you or a loved one have diabetes.

What’s in: Using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to watch your glucose levels.

Glucose levels and heart disease risk go hand in hand.

Continuous glucose monitors like our FreeStyle Libre CGM systems can help you watch patterns in your levels over time and take action to stabilize them in the moment. If you’re living with diabetes, understanding glucose level trendlines is important for your health journey — especially when data suggests you’re twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart disease compared with people who don’t have diabetes.1

If a person’s glucose levels are constantly high, the heart’s blood vessels and nerves can be damaged.1

In comes a CGM. You can see your glucose levels, including where it has been and where it could go, throughout the day with this type of biowearable. As you move and eat, a CGM helps you watch out for when there is a sharp increase called a glucose spike — and how often that spike happens. If there’s a noticeable pattern, CGM users can share* their CGM data with their healthcare provider (which our FreeStyle Libre systems do through LibreView in select countries**) to determine if there are any lifestyle changes that can help and if any tests are recommended.

Take Beth Marcello, for example. Beth is a retired teacher and mother who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and lives with heart failure. She started using the FreeStyle Libre and Abbott’s CardioMEMS HF System and has had a much easier time managing her health.

“For me, my health is a numbers game. Looking at the numbers on my FreeStyle Libre app — which I check often — allows me to make better decisions about what and when I eat,” she said. “That in turn, impacts my heart health and my CardioMEMS numbers.”

“What’s great is that not only can I make smarter decisions about what I do every day, but my doctors share this information, making the care I get very personal and connected.”

What’s out: Not planning out how you eat.

“You can eat that?”

Diabetes stigma remains prevalent as people continue to misunderstand that diabetes doesn’t dictate a specific diet. Aim for healthy, balanced meals — the same advice applies to everyone.

And on top of having healthy, balanced meals, be purposeful about how you navigate your plate. According to a 2022 study, people with Type 2 diabetes who ate vegetables before eating carbohydrates saw an improvement in their average glucose levels when followed up with at the five-year mark.2

“Lifestyle changes for people with diabetes, like trying out food sequencing, don’t have to be overcomplicated,” said Dr. Mahmood Kazemi, divisional vice president, Diabetes Care, Abbott. “Continuous glucose monitoring helps draw the connections between what’s on a plate and how glucose levels are affected — and that benefits the diabetes management journey because informed decisions can happen. The goal is to help people with diabetes demystify the patterns in their glucose trendline over time since every body is different.”

It’s no secret that balancing a plate with leafy greens, whole grains and protein-rich foods can help protect against heart disease. But by considering how you eat in addition to what, you can better stabilize your glucose levels, which in turn decreases your risk of heart disease.3

What’s in: Getting active — starting with a walk.

There’s no question that being active is good for you.

However, 39% of adults with diabetes reported being physically active, compared to 58% of adults without diabetes, according to a U.S. survey.4 If getting moving feels daunting, consider starting small and try going for a walk. According to a study that compared walking for 30 minutes at any time of the day to walking 10 minutes after three main meals a day, the latter option may be more ideal to help reduce blood glucose levels.5

Steadily increasing your walking time better protects against heart disease. Research that followed people living with Type 2 diabetes over eight years found that people who walked at least two hours a week had a 34% lower heart disease mortality rate compared with people that were sedentary.6

Take the first step by purposefully incorporating a walk after every meal. Eventually, you’ll be able to consider moving up to other physical activities that can also help with diabetes and heart disease, such as resistance training.7

What’s out: Not setting up time to speak with your healthcare provider.

It’s important to make time to connect with your healthcare provider each year — especially to check in about your ABCs:1

Get an A1C test, which is a simple blood test that measures your average blood glucose levels over the past three months. Your doctor can help define what your target range should be.Have your blood pressure checked.Check your cholesterol levels to ensure they’re not too high.Talk about any smoking habits that can impact your risk level.

If you have any questions about how to change your routine based on what your CGM is revealing about your glucose levels, an appointment is a great opportunity to walk through the data, talk about your current habits and plan for any changes that could help decrease your risk for heart disease.

What’s in: Protecting your heart.

What’s out: Avoiding change — this is the year you make lifestyle changes to take control of your health.

Factors that may cause actual results to vary include, but are not limited to actual climate change and biodiversity consequences, adequate technology not being available on adequate terms, unavailability of land or other opportunities for conservation, rehabilitation or capacity building on commercially reasonable terms or inability to obtain any required external approvals or consensus for such opportunities; changes in laws and governmental regulations or enforcement thereof that impact our operations or strategy, and changes in commodity prices or general economic conditions. We caution you that the foregoing list of important factors and assumptions is not exhaustive. Other events or circumstances could cause our actual results to differ materially from those estimated or projected and expressed in, or implied by, our forward-looking statements.

Inherent in forward-looking statements are risks and uncertainties beyond our ability to predict or control.  Further information concerning risks, assumptions and uncertainties associated with these forward-looking statements and our business can be found in our most recent Annual Information Form filed under our profile on SEDAR+ (www.sedarplus.ca) and on EDGAR (www.sec.gov) under cover of Form 40-F, as well as subsequent filings that can also be found under our profile.
