Automating the Import of TSO’s Outside World to Model to ADMS Project

Brian Strojny, Manager Operations Support

Kushal Patel, Service Analyst IT

and John McGarrity, Section Engineer

At Pepco, we use a variety of tools to help operators maintain situational awareness to help match real-world conditions and provide accurate solutions. The “Automating the Import of TSO’s Outside World to Model to ADMS” improved our tools, seamlessly integrating an external network model to enhance Pepco’s state estimation and contingency analysis. The project was like completing a puzzle – stitching missing pieces from the broader network directly into our system. As a result, it helps to prepare operators for unexpected events, and the automation both minimizes errors and increases efficiency.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career journey, here at GoDaddy.

My name is Abbey. I grew up in Vancouver, Canada and came to the U.S. to complete my undergraduate and master’s degrees. I’ve always been passionate about the intersection of environmental, social, and governance (ESG)* issues and business, so I pursued my degrees in directly related fields. After grad school, I worked in ESG Consulting in New York City and then subsequently moved out to the Bay Area to work on ESG within a company. I have since worked for a few tech companies in ESG roles that focus on ESG strategy, reporting, and investor engagement, and greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate strategy.

At GoDaddy, I’m responsible for driving forward our voluntary and mandatory ESG reporting strategy, GHG emissions and climate-related work, and other strategic ESG projects. I love collaborating and working with teammates from across the globe to help grow and scale ESG within the company.

Can you share more about the work your team has done to reduce GHG emissions?

At GoDaddy, we believe everyone has a critical role to play in addressing the climate crisis.

In early 2022, the Corporate Sustainability** & ESG team worked cross-functionally to set our first GHG emissions reduction target. We focused our goal and efforts on our greatest areas of impact and influence, such as our data centers and corporate real estate. These teams are responsible for driving our emissions reductions and made amazing progress through footprint optimization, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.

We are proud to have achieved our goal to reduce our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% from a 2019 baseline at of the end of 2023!

What are you most proud of, regarding GoDaddy’s ESG progress from this past year?

We’ve made so much progress in the last year! I’m particularly proud of the work the Corporate Sustainability & ESG team, whose collaborative efforts with various teams throughout the organization have greatly improved our sustainability reporting processes and controls. With increasing expectations and emerging regulations, the efficiency, accuracy, and quality of our reporting is paramount.

What are GoDaddy’s key focuses regarding ESG in 2024 and beyond?

In 2024, our objective is to enhance our ESG prioritization assessment in line with evolving regulations. We intend to undertake a robust analysis, utilizing a current state assessment and value chain mapping, while incorporating internal and external stakeholder perspectives. This comprehensive approach will provide us with an updated understanding of GoDaddy’s ESG-related impacts and potential related risks and opportunities.

Additionally, while we’re proud of our success in achieving our GHG emissions goal, we know we still have more work to do. Moving forward, we hope to develop new and thoughtful plans that push us to reduce our environmental impact even further.

How do you feel that the organization supports you in your work?

ESG work is inherently collaborative and cross-functional. To address most priorities across the company and drive progress, we must partner with teams across the organization. Since joining GoDaddy, I’ve been so encouraged by leaders and team members with their support and excitement as we navigate our next steps in our company’s ESG journey.

Introducing SJ and Kyrylo

Sukhjot (SJ) Girgla is the Director of Supply Chain for the Beauty Professional Business and focuses on logistics including demand planning, warehousing, and customer operations. Kyrylo Fedoruk’s role as Senior Manager, Net Revenue Management analyzes how Henkel spends trade dollars and ensures they are maximizing return on investment (ROI). While their responsibilities may differ, they share a deep interest in bettering the planet and working on sustainable initiatives outside of their primary roles at Henkel.

For SJ, with a background in chemical and bioengineering, choosing to work at a company that had sustainability at its heart was an easy decision. “When I was looking at Henkel it was the core values which resonated so well with my passion and perspective.” From a very young age SJ has been drawn to the importance of sustainability and, with current issues like climate change, driving sustainability is more important than ever.

Kyrylo’s decision to work at Henkel was also easy. As a loyal consumer of Henkel brands, he found himself attracted to his role because of the brand reputation in Europe. He recalls, “I knew it was a company that produced reliable products that I used daily.” His interest in the environment stems from a personal mission to build a more sustainable and cleaner planet for the future. He is deeply invested in Henkel’s commitment and actions to protect the environment.

Get to know the Earth Squad

Three years ago today, the Earth Squad was born. Founded by SJ and Kyrylo, the Earth Squad is a team of volunteers from Henkel Canada who have come together with the shared desire to connect moments in time like Earth Day and various community projects with Henkel’s global sustainability agenda. The Earth Squad is part of Henkel’s employee Sustainability Action Team – a grassroots network of employees actively involved in sustainability efforts at work, at home and in the community. Throughout the year, they work on multiple projects that contribute to their local community’s overall health.

Impactful Solutions in Canada

The Earth Squad researches solutions to support the community inside and outside Henkel. With a keen focus on education, they developed a fun and easy way to learn how to live more sustainably – called Sustainability Bingo. Instead of numbers, employees complete eco-friendly tasks to fill a Bingo card and earn prizes.

To further education efforts, the team onboards interns at Henkel on recycling practices so they in turn can educate others. “In Canada there are different methods of recycling based on your municipality. With employees commuting from different municipalities, up to 60 miles away; this program helps to ensure that we are compliant with the proper regulations,” Kyrylo shares.

To help the local community, the Earth Squad has donated thousands of Henkel products to charitable organizations in Canada that support the basic food and health needs of area residents.

The team also takes their hands and hearts into the community by adopting a park in Mississauga, where they have hosted six clean-ups since 2022. The activity attracts Henkel employees from sectors and positions across the business. In fact, the cleanups have become such a staple in Mississauga that the town installed a sign that reads, “This park is adopted by Henkel Canada.” The unveiling was such a special moment for the Earth Squad that they were joined by Rob Bertok, President Henkel Canada, Vice President NA General Manufacturing & Maintenance, and other members of the leadership team.

The continuous ingenuity and determination of the Earth Squad to build a strong, more sustainable, planet has led to significant accomplishments and continues to push Henkel’s Purposeful Growth Agenda forward.

Being a pioneer for good means…

For Kyrylo, being a pioneer for good is fueled by the love he has for his family.

The Earth is a gift that you inherited, and it is your sole responsibility to hand it over as a gift to your children in an even better state than you inherited it.

Kyrylo Fedoruk, Senior Manager, Net Revenue Management

This belief makes it easy for him to implement daily sustainable practices like recycling, conserving water, and reducing waste.

SJ believes that everything is connected back to the idea of being a pioneer at heart for the good of generations. It is embedded in the culture at Henkel and is present from the beginning of everyone’s career journey at the company.

Henkel encourages all of us to act as entrepreneurs, and when we look at sustainability, I think every individual must act as an entrepreneur for the planet. Until everyone takes ownership, I think we will struggle to forge a better future.

Sukhjot (SJ) Girgla, Director of Supply Chain for the Beauty Professional Business

Leading the Earth Squad has been a highlight in both Kyrylo and SJ’s careers. In honor of their 3rd anniversary on Earth Day 2024, they are challenging everyone to look introspectively, find what it takes to become an entrepreneur for the planet, and make a commitment to act.

John: Welcome to another edition of the Impact Podcast. I’m John Shegerian, and I’m so honored to have with us today, Niki King. She’s the VP and Head of Sustainability for the Clorox Company. Welcome to the Impact Podcast, Niki.

Niki King: Thanks so much for having me, John.

John: It’s an honor to have you here today, representing such an iconic and important brand. And before we get talking about all the things in sustainability you’re doing with your colleagues at Clorox, I’d love you to share a little bit about your background. Niki, where you grow up, and how’d you get on this journey, and who inspired you along the way?

Niki: Absolutely. I currently live in New Jersey, but like many of my peers and sustainability professionals, I’ve really had quite the journey. If you would have asked me 25 years ago what I would be doing, it certainly wouldn’t be this, nor would I have imagined this roller coaster that my career has been. But I grew up in a tiny town in rural Alabama. We literally had one-stop life and a face in the courthouse window. So that’s a true story. You can Google it. It’s an interesting one. That’s the claim to fame. I had pretty humble beginnings.

Through our Environmental Program Management Standard, we focus on identifying activities, services and processes that generate waste and strive to reduce the impact of our waste disposal practices on the environment. Our operations generate various types of waste, including general solid waste, hazardous and regulated waste and e-waste, including network infrastructure equipment. Our approach to waste management involves reuse and recycling programs to help us decrease the amount of waste we send to landfills. It also comprises the development of initiatives to reduce our overall waste footprint and the promotion of less toxic, more durable, reusable and recycled materials in our operations. A variety of our business units lead our waste recycling and management programs. They include:

Real Estate and Facilities (QREF): Our QREF and site support teams manage general solid waste at our sites, as well as manage surplus office furniture. The team works with service providers to measure waste and implement programs to encourage waste reduction, recycling and composting.EHS: Our EHS group manages hazardous and other regulated waste generated by various business operations. EHS also provides guidance to various business units regarding the recycling of batteries and e-waste and the management of other regulated wastes.IT: Our IT group works with several qualified e-waste recyclers to manage electronics recycling. The team is also active in donating computer equipment to local charities and schools.

We continue our efforts to minimize the impacts of hazardous waste by using less toxic material, where possible, and reducing the amount generated. Our disposition approach is recycling or reuse, followed by physical treatment or disposal in an appropriate landfill, as a last resort.

We strive to prioritize our waste mitigation efforts to reduce the number of materials going to landfills. To support this effort, we revamped our internal waste data collection system to increase data availability and accuracy. We also retrained our data providers and supporting vendors to follow our waste data collection processes and practices. By taking these actions, we will have better visibility of our total waste generated and be in a position to identify waste diversion solutions, as well as improve our waste management activities.

“Our approach to waste management involves reuse and recycling programs to help us decrease the amount of waste we send to landfills.”

In this role, Probst is responsible for building and leading a network of subject matter experts responsible for building capabilities and enabling a performance and development culture at all levels of the organization. She will do this through establishing talent strategies, infrastructure and processes, as well as advising the business and sharing insights.

Probst has played a pivotal role in advancing the leadership culture at Cummins, acting as leader and HR sponsor for many leadership programs. Under her leadership, the Building Success in You program, one of Cummins’ newest focused on the Cummins leadership behaviors, reached a milestone in 2023, graduating more than 4,000 employee graduates globally since its inception. She is also committed to progressing Cummins’ DE&I strategy through integrating key themes into our Leadership Development framework, and she is currently assessing and evolving the Cummins’ performance management processes and systems.

Prior to coming to Cummins, Probst held several HR roles in the finance and banking sector and was formerly a tax accountant before making the shift into HR.

Gbile Adewunmi – Vice President, Power Systems Industrial Markets

Matt McQueen – Vice President, EBU Supply Chain

McQueen assumed leadership of our Engine Business Supply Chain in 2022 during one of the most important periods in our history as many of our businesses continued to navigate the supply constraints and other challenges caused by the pandemic.

McQueen’s extensive Cummins experience and supply chain expertise, paired with his team-based approach to problem-solving, resulted in continued delivery to our customers, a focus on improvements to employee health and safety, and inventory reductions that were significantly ahead of plan in 2023. McQueen has also played a key role in repositioning our EBU plants for the future as we continue to build out and strengthen our manufacturing and supply chain network to support the industry’s first fuel agnostic engine platforms, as well as continue to deliver more than 1.3 million advanced engines every year.

Throughout McQueen’s nearly 28 years at Cummins, he’s held many leadership positions in manufacturing, quality and supply chain and is seen as one of our company’s most trusted supply chain advisors. He first joined the EBU Leadership Team in 2017 and has worn many important hats for the EBU business, including leading the Pickup Business and Quality organizations as well as twice leading supply chain. He was also the plant manager at three of our plants, including the Jamestown Engine Plant, Columbus Fuel Systems Plant and Juarez Fuel Systems Plant.

HOUSTON, April 29, 2024 /3BL/ – The Baker Hughes Foundation announced a $152,000 grant to EARTHDAY.ORG in support of climate and environmental literacy as well as the global Earth Day movement. EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to diversify the environmental movement and mobilize it as the most effective vehicle to build a healthy, sustainable environment, address climate change and protect the Earth for future generations.

The grant will support EARTHDAY.ORG’s creation and dissemination of a comprehensive guide for incorporating climate education. EARTHDAY.ORG will lead trainings around the guide through exhibitions and workshops at national teacher engagements, equipping educators with necessary tools and knowledge to effectively teach about climate change itself, their role in environmental stewardship as well as the economic opportunities that the green environment brings. In addition, it will provide the next generation with tools to innovate, lead and cultivate a sustainable future.

“We are advocating for climate education to be part of every curriculum, in every school globally,” said Bryce Coon, director of climate education, EARTHDAY.ORG. “Through the generosity of Baker Hughes Foundation, we can take a step closer towards that goal by giving teachers tangible resources to bring climate education into their classrooms today.”

This grant aligns with the Foundation’s mission of advancing education and ensuring future generations can thrive. This donation also supports Baker Hughes’ commitment to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)– specifically SDG #4 quality education, to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

“Driving change towards a sustainable world requires a sustainable mindset that begins with the right knowledge and education. At Baker Hughes, sustainability education and training are critical elements of how we are embedding sustainability across our company to empower our employees to take energy forward. We’re proud to support EARTHDAY.ORG for this noble cause,” said Allyson Anderson Book, chief sustainability officer at Baker Hughes.
