FedEx Cares, in collaboration with the Wolf River Conservancy, Clean Memphis, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), led a major effort to beautify and conserve the Wolf River Greenway in Memphis on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. This event celebrates 15 years of collaboration between FedEx Cares and NFWF in their joint mission to protect and restore plants, fish, wildlife, and urban habitats across the nation.

The initiative brought together nearly 40 enthusiastic FedEx volunteers and representatives from the Wolf River Conservancy, Clean Memphis, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

“I always look forward to the camaraderie and team building that happens when participating in FedEx Cares events, and this event was no different,” said Jessica Tillie, Director of Airline & International, and Specialty Ops Communications. “More importantly, these volunteer opportunities always serve as a great reminder for how FedEx is supporting the betterment of our communities here in Memphis.”

The volunteer teams engaged in various activities aimed at enhancing the Wolf River Greenway, including litter and tire removal, tree and flower planting, construction of an unpaved dirt trail, and the establishment of a floating garden.

“The Wolf River Conservancy is pleased to have partnered with FedEx Cares, Clean Memphis and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to cleanup and improve a stretch of the Wolf River Greenway in North Memphis,” said Erik Houston, Executive Director of the Wolf River Conservancy. “Volunteers from FedEx and Wolf River Conservancy staff removed 138 tires, 15 large bags of trash and 25 large items from valuable wetlands along with significant removal of invasive plant species. The Conservancy is grateful for the opportunity to partner with FedEx employees to make these improvements for our community.”

Even with Earth Day in the rearview mirror, it’s still clear that the fight to counter the climate crisis will be won or lost in the world’s cities—and the innovative use of emerging technologies is one of our most powerful tools.

Cities occupy 3% of the world’s land but use 60% to 80% of energy consumption. Cities also emit 75% of the world’s carbon. This problem will intensify as urban populations expand in the coming years: Urban emissions could double by 2050.

Of the thousands of plants and animals in Rayonier’s forests, a few species are considered threatened or endangered, which we work actively to protect.

Our foresters and contractors are trained to be aware of and recognize protected T&E species and their habitats. We rely on mapping and database tools, as well as a working knowledge of our land, to determine where specific conservation practices are needed. In addition to our own efforts, we also participate in broader industry and conservation initiatives, such as population studies and surveys.

In the U.S., we rely on state natural heritage programs, NatureServe, regular biodiversity assessments, and the routine field work of our foresters to locate potential occurrences of T&E species. In New Zealand, occurrences of Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Species (RTES) are recorded in our EMS database so that forest management plans can be adapted accordingly. In addition, certain areas designated as either Significant Ecological Areas (SEAs) or High Conservation Value Forests (HCVFs) require special procedures to ensure that they are protected. Through the use of these various tools, we have identified that approximately 50% of our forests have the potential of being a T&E species habitat.

Importantly, our forest management practices help reduce the risk of adverse impacts to the normal life cycle or habitat of T&E species. Such practices include surveying sites for species occurrences before conducting forest management activities, leaving buffers along riparian and natural habitat areas, or limiting harvest activities during certain times of the year.

Some T&E species are nomadic, which means they move from place to place and do not have fixed boundaries to their habitat. The modifications we make to our forest management practices for these species include hand planting versus machine planting, and/or adapting the timing of activity based on their cycle of movement.

In the tumultuous landscape of higher education, crisis management has (or should) become an indispensable aspect of institutional governance. From natural disasters to financial turmoil, and now in the era of global pandemics and political activism, colleges and universities face an array of challenges that demand swift and effective response. As custodians of these institutions, board members and trustees bear the weighted responsibility of ensuring preparedness and resilience in the face of crises. To navigate these turbulent waters, they must pose critical questions to institutional leadership, probing the depth and efficacy of their crisis management plans.

Understanding the risks

Before delving into the questions, it’s crucial to recognize the diverse risk array that colleges and universities face:

Natural disasters: Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires pose significant threats to campus infrastructure and student and staff safetyPublic health emergencies: The emergence of infectious diseases, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the need for robust health protocols and contingency plansFinancial instability: Economic downturns, fluctuations in enrollment and budgetary mismanagement can jeopardize the financial viability of institutionsCybersecurity breaches: With the increasing reliance on digital infrastructure, universities are vulnerable to data breaches, ransomware attacks and other cyber risksPolitical activism: Sociopolitical upheavals, protests and civil disturbances can disrupt campus activities, compromise student safety and impact institutional operationsReputational damage: Scandals, controversies or mishandling of sensitive issues can tarnish the institution’s reputation and erode public trust

Key questions for board members and trustees

To effectively oversee crisis management efforts, higher education board members and trustees should pose the following probing questions to institutional leadership.

Preparedness assessment

How frequently are crisis management plans reviewed and updated to address evolving risks? Are there clear protocols for communication, decision-making and resource allocation during emergencies? What mechanisms are in place to assess the institution’s vulnerability to various risks?

Resource allocation

How is funding allocated to support crisis preparedness and response efforts? Are there sufficient reserves or insurance coverage to mitigate financial losses during crises? What partnerships or collaborations exist with external agencies or organizations to enhance response capabilities?

Health and safety protocols

How does the institution monitor and enforce health and safety protocols to prevent the spread of infectious diseases? Are there contingency plans in place to address outbreaks or pandemics, including provisions for remote learning and campus closures? What measures are taken to ensure the physical safety of students and staff in times of campus unrest?

Technological infrastructure

How robust is the institution’s cybersecurity infrastructure, and what measures are taken to protect sensitive data? Are there backup systems and redundancy measures to ensure continuity of operations in the event of cyber-attacks or system failures? How are students and faculty trained to recognize and respond to cybersecurity threats?

Reputation management

What strategies are employed to monitor public perception and respond effectively to crises that may impact the institution’s reputation? How does the institution foster transparency and accountability in its communication with stakeholders during crises? Are there mechanisms in place to learn from past crises and implement improvements to prevent recurrence?

Conclusion

In an era characterized by uncertainty and volatility, colleges and universities must reinforce their resiliency against an array of potential crises. Board members and trustees play a pivotal role in this endeavor, holding leadership accountable and ensuring that institutions are equipped to weather the storm. By asking incisive questions and fostering a culture of preparedness and strength, they can safeguard the long-term success and sustainability of higher education institutions in the face of adversity, no matter its form.
