Project At-a-Glance:

The opportunity:

Transport goods in multiple cold temperatures using industry-leading technology: an emissions-reducing, hybrid-electric refrigerated trailer

The solution:

The Thermo King evolve™ hybrid-electric, multi-temperature trailer

Sustainability outcomes:

Emissions reduction of 100 pounds of carbon per unit per day

In 2021, Thermo King partnered with leading logistics provider Martin Brower to run trials of the single-temp evolve™ hybrid-electric trailer refrigeration system. This past December the new, multi-temp evolve trailer went into service, making supply deliveries to Chicago-area quick service restaurant locations as part of Martin Brower’s trucking fleet.

The battery-powered trailer has performed extremely well over the past two months of operations, not only maintaining its cargo at precise temperatures, but doing so with zero direct emissions.

“This technology has the potential to significantly decarbonize the cold chain,” said Paul Kroes, Sr. Trailer Product Manager, Thermo King Americas. “In our trials we recorded average emissions reduction of 100 pounds of carbon per unit per day. When you consider how many long-haul refrigerated trailers that are on the roads today, you’re talking about massive carbon-reduction potential.”

Thermo King and Martin Brower have been testing electrified trailers for more than two years, transporting loads of refrigerated and deep-frozen goods various distances under differing climate conditions. All the while, engineers have used intelligent dashboards and telematics to collect performance data to improve the technology and better meet customer needs.

“A big focus of the research has been to understand the customer, to learn with them and create the best solution to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of their products,” said Sophia Krueger, Channel Marketing Manager for Thermo King Americas. “Partnerships like this are just one way we are providing sustainable and reliable transport climate control solutions that move the cold chain forward.”

By 2025, Thermo King will have an all-electric solution in every transport segment of the cold chain. The evolve portfolio will also be critical in advancing Trane Technologies’ 2030 Sustainability Commitments, including the Gigaton Challenge, an initiative aimed at reducing customer greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion metric tons over the next six years.

Along with the built environment, the transportation cold chain is one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) and presents a major opportunity for carbon emissions reductions. Thermo King’s evolve portfolio of electric refrigerated transportation solutions represents a big step toward a low-carbon cold chain.

“The evolve trials have been instrumental in highlighting the challenges and possibilities associated with transitioning to electrification,” stated Kroes. “Through these trials, we have reaffirmed our ability to transport goods at precise temperatures with utmost reliability and sustainability. Our approach revolves around delivering flexible, dependable, and scalable solutions that cater to the unique needs of our customers.”

Food and Drug Administration confirms Bovaer meets safety and efficacy requirementsElanco expects product launch and added carbon credit value to producers beginning in the third quarterElanco announces agreement with dsm-firmenich to expand distribution of Bovaer across North America, adding both the Canada and Mexico markets

GREENFIELD, Ind., May 28, 2024 /3BL/ – Elanco Animal Health Incorporated (NYSE: ELAN) today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed its comprehensive, multi-year review of Bovaer® (3-NOP), a first-in-class methane-reducing feed ingredient, and determined the product meets safety and efficacy requirements for use in lactating dairy cattle.

“This monumental announcement has the ability to accelerate the opportunity for climate-neutral dairy farming while creating a new revenue stream for dairy farmers across the country,” said Jeff Simmons, President and CEO, Elanco Animal Health. “We appreciate FDA’s commitment to maintaining high standards for science-based review, while balancing the need to quickly bring solutions to the market. Bovaer represents another example of Elanco being a partner of choice in animal health, where the capabilities of our talented R&D, regulatory and commercial teams are delivering significant value.

Simmons continued: “As global temperatures breach new thresholds, consumers demand more sustainable products and the farm economy battles profitability challenges, we are excited to bring Bovaer to the market as a potential solution. Bovaer will create value for farmers, while helping food companies meet consumer demands and deliver on their sustainability commitments. As animal, human and now environmental health continue to converge, Bovaer is one of the most significant innovations that considers this intersection and provides consumers, farmers and society what they want for our future.”

Bovaer represents another blockbuster potential innovation in Elanco’s portfolio and further accelerates livestock sustainability, the next billion-dollar plus market in animal health. This innovation is expected to accelerate market development and increase innovation in this space.

Bovaer works by suppressing the enzyme in the cow’s rumen that forms methane. Feeding one tablespoon of Bovaer per lactating dairy cow per day can reduce methane emissions about 30% or about 1.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions annually, while creating opportunity for dairy farmers to be financially rewarded for reducing their dairy’s carbon footprint.1 Feeding one million cows Bovaer would reduce emissions equivalent to removing more than 285,000 cars from the road for a year.2 Feeding Bovaer to cattle has proven to be safe for animals, producers and consumers.

Expanding Access Across North America

Elanco and dsm-firmenich have agreed to expand Elanco’s commercialization of Bovaer across North America. In addition to the U.S., Elanco will also now have the right to market Bovaer in Canada and Mexico, where the product is already available for use in beef and dairy cattle. This expanded agreement can accelerate the opportunity to make climate-neutral cattle farming in North America a reality this decade.

“We congratulate Elanco and the U.S. dairy sector, on this important milestone, and will support Elanco by providing initial supplies from Europe,” said Dimitri de Vreeze, CEO at dsm-firmenich. “This strategic collaboration exemplifies how we can accelerate the expansion and adoption of Bovaer in North America to significantly decrease methane emissions on a large scale, and thereby support global efforts to combat climate change. Bovaer holds the key to a transformative shift in the global dairy sector, and launching this feed ingredient in the U.S. after years of dedicated research, trials, and industry collaboration is a testament to its global potential.”

Simmons said, “We appreciate the work dsm-firmenich has invested in this revolutionary product and are pleased they’ve recognized Elanco as the global farm animal health leader and the right partner to bring this solution to farmers across North America.”

Why Methane Matters

This announcement comes at a pivotal time. According to the United Nations, the world’s population has until the year 2030 to curb greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) or deal with irreversible impacts to the planet.3 In response, about two-thirds of all Fortune 500 companies have set significant climate commitment goals.4 Reducing enteric methane emissions from cattle—naturally generated through the enteric fermentation process—represents a key opportunity. Methane lasts about a decade in the atmosphere and is 27x more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat—so smaller reductions create greater impact on temperature.5 By mitigating methane, the livestock industry can reduce the rate of climate warming and allow food companies and retailers to make meaningful progress toward their Scope 3 emissions goals.

“Reducing enteric methane is critical if we are to reach our climate goals,” said Dr. Frank Mitloehner, CLEAR Center Director and University California Davis Professor and Cooperative Extension Air Quality Specialist. “It’s exciting our farmers will have an important tool to do that, in Bovaer.”

Creating New Revenue Streams for Farmers

Feeding Bovaer to cows provides a scalable and credible way for dairy farmers to benefit from being good stewards of the environment by being financially rewarded for implementing on-farm sustainability interventions.

“At an added cost of a few cents a gallon of milk, Bovaer can help food companies meet their climate commitments and consumer desire for more sustainable dairy products,” said Katie Cook, Vice President, Livestock Sustainability and Farm Animal Marketing at Elanco. “Meanwhile, by engaging in voluntary carbon markets and securing USDA and state conservation programming, dairy producers have a scalable sustainability practice with the potential to create an annual return of $20 or more per lactating cow by feeding Bovaer6. Our goal is to make this opportunity a reality starting this summer, while creating a self-sustaining carbon inset market for American agriculture.”

Dairy farmers incorporate Bovaer into their rations and quantify the effect using carbon market-friendly tools like UpLook™ by Elanco, an insights-based engine designed to quantify greenhouse gas emissions reductions. The tool utilizes on-farm data and peer-reviewed science to identify key drivers of an operation’s carbon footprint and track the progress of sustainability efforts. UpLook connects seamlessly to Athian, the first-of-its-kind livestock carbon inset marketplace. This seamless process allows farmers to quantify their emissions reduction efforts and certify carbon credits for sale. In addition to the carbon marketplace, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $89 million in funding to support farms using technologies like Bovaer to reduce their methane emissions.7

“Products like Elanco’s Bovaer will allow U.S. farmers to be rewarded for participating in voluntary, producer-led sustainability efforts,” said Gregg Doud, President and CEO, National Milk Producers Federation. “Consumers around the world are demanding lower-carbon foods. Bovaer is an innovation that can help U.S. dairy farmers remain globally competitive and maintain their role as leaders in more sustainable dairy production.”

Greg Bethard, a dairy farmer from Kansas who has used UpLook to quantify his greenhouse gas emissions, expressed his excitement around today’s announcement.

“Dairy producers have made great strides improving the sustainability of our operations,” said Bethard, High Plains Ponderosa Dairy. “Today’s announcement provides access to a product that has been extensively studied and shown to reduce emissions from dairy cows. Bovaer is a value-creation opportunity for dairies—it’s about helping us provide product in a manner most of our consumers are wanting—a lower carbon footprint food.”

New Holland, a brand of CNH, featured at the 21st edition of Tecnoshow Comigo in Rio Verde, Brazil.

The brand presented its line of 100% connected tractors at the show last month with a particular emphasis on the T8 and T9 PLM Intelligence, and the CR Intellisense harvester.

One of the main attractions of the booth was the T8 and T9 PLM Intelligence high-power tractors, which feature a completely remodelled factory-embedded electronic architecture focused on digital, connected and high-performance agriculture. The T8 and T9 PLM Intelligence bring a new concept to improve efficiency, delivering higher productivity with lower operating costs.

PLM (Precison Land Management) Intelligence helps farmers meet the demand for precision agriculture in the field. The total connectivity of these tractors enables, for example, better fleet management, control and support in agricultural operations, as they will be fully connected with the brand’s new portals, MYNEWHOLLAND, for support and training, and MYPLMCONNECT, for telemetry.

With this 100% connected technology, the rural producer will save on seeds, chemical pesticides, fuel and, at the same time, improve the management of the fleet of machines. This helps optimize the time of agricultural operations and labor.

Another highlight of the brand is the CR Intellisense line of harvesters. With artificial intelligence technology, it allows the operator to choose between different harvesting strategies according to the conditions of the crop and the objective to be achieved.

The Intellisense system features an even more precise and perfect harvesting concept, which helps to increase crop efficiency. In addition, the CR line comes standard with a cabin with greater space and more comfort, lighting with LED lights, onboard telemetry and a “stone” detection system, among other technologies.

HELSINKI, Finland, May 28, 2024 /3BL/ – Eaton, the intelligent power management company, has opened a new state-of-the-art campus in Helsinki to boost its capacity to manufacture and supply Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, including its latest product, the Eaton 9395X.

Eaton is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of three-phase UPS systems and the company’s investment in its new Helsinki campus is driven by strong growth in its business. UPS systems are in high demand, particularly in the data centre sector where the heavy processing requirements of AI applications and digital data management make continuous power supply vital, and the need for expansion likely. UPS systems are also used extensively in commercial and industrial buildings and within the healthcare sector to protect against supply interruptions or voltage fluctuations.

The new Eaton 9395X occupies a footprint up to 30% smaller than similar UPS models, which is clearly a benefit in a data center expansion scenario. The 9395X which is based on silicon carbide converters is also more energy efficient, and equipped with Eaton’s proprietary EnergyAware technology, which prioritises system continuity yet supports the provision of demand response services to national grids.

Dr Karina Rigby, president, Critical Systems, Electrical Sector, EMEA, Eaton, said: “EnergyAware makes it possible for businesses, especially data centres, to sell flexibility services to the grid – an attractive revenue source which also delivers considerable sustainability benefit. This is because flexibility helps grid operators to bring more renewable energy on to the grid, thus offsetting the carbon impact of the flexibility provider. Supporting the energy transition in this way helps bridge the flexibility gap between the amount of variable renewable energy needed, and the corresponding flexibility required to balance it.”

Philippe Perrot, business unit general manager, Critical Power Solutions, Electrical Sector, EMEA, Eaton, further explained the rationale for the new campus: “Our business is growing so fast that we had outgrown our existing factory in the Helsinki region. Our new site is much bigger and designed to support outstanding customer experience. It will supply UPS systems primarily for data centres, but also for healthcare, commercial and marine sector applications, and introduce customers to the benefits of our associated low voltage product portfolio. In fact, we are already working toward expanding in Helsinki. We will grow the existing 390-strong workforce with the addition of at least 100 new employees.”

Petri Koskinen, plant manager, Helsinki, Finland, will oversee much of the continuing growth: “This is an exciting place to work for professionals in the critical power arena.” he said: “We have a rich knowledge base in Helsinki, having manufactured UPS and power conversion technology here since 1962, and we will build on that heritage. The sustainability credentials of our campus are notable, with the energy efficiency features of the building and its operation designed to be leading edge and ISO 50001 compliant.”

Eaton is an intelligent power management company dedicated to protecting the environment and improving the quality of life for people everywhere. We make products for the data center, utility, industrial, commercial, machine building, residential, aerospace and mobility markets. We are guided by our commitment to do business right, to operate sustainably and to help our customers manage power ─ today and well into the future. By capitalizing on the global growth trends of electrification and digitalization, we’re accelerating the planet’s transition to renewable energy sources, helping to solve the world’s most urgent power management challenges, and building a more sustainable society for people today and generations to come.

Eaton was founded in 1911 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange for more than a century. We reported revenues of $23.2 billion in 2023 and serve customers in more than 160 countries. For more information, visit www.eaton.com. Follow us on LinkedIn.

Gen Blog | Community

WRITTEN BY Kim Allman Head of Corporate Responsibility and Public Policy

We released our 2024 Social Impact Report, our latest record of the ways we bring together our team, passions and technology to support people and communities all over the world.

Year in and year out, we see the real, positive impacts that our efforts make possible: our education and training programs provide Cyber Safety skills and tools to the people who need them most, our work with key partners makes the cybersecurity field more equitable and inclusive, and our team members consistently devote their time, energy and expertise to the causes that matter to them.

A core belief in our ability to make the world a better, safer place is at the heart of everything we do at Gen. In that spirit, we’re excited to share just a few highlights from our social impact programs, which we discuss in-depth in the report.

Cyber Safety education and training

In 2024, we reached more than 5.3 million people with Cyber Safety awareness and training, equipping youth, educators, families and vulnerable people with the skills they need to navigate their digital lives safely and with more confidence. For example, our work with Discovery Education provides educators in grades 3-8 with lesson plans that build safe and healthy digital habits.

We also donated Cyber Safety products to more than 9,750 nonprofits, protecting data for institutions that serve critical community functions. We worked with TechSoup and the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) to pilot a product donation program that provides survivors of domestic violence with free Norton products that help prevent technology-facilitated abuse.

Our culture of giving

55% of Gen team members participated in our Giving@Gen programs in 2024. That’s 30% higher than the Benevity industry benchmark, and it surpasses our internal goal of 40% participation. Our first Global Volunteer Week gathered more than 500 Gen team members for 1,300 hours of service.

Diversifying the tech workforce

Women are chronically underrepresented in technology and cybersecurity fields. That’s why we work with organizations like Czechitas, Women4Cyber (W4C) and nasscom foundation to provide women across Europe and India with skills training and career mentorship, setting them up for sustained success as they progress in these industries. In 2024, we posted nearly 200 job openings through Czechitas, W4C and other partners.

At Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, FL, chimpanzees spend their days relaxing and having fun in the sun. The organization goes to great lengths to ensure their residents are comfortable and entertained—even using their talent to paint canvases that help raise money for the sanctuary!

Through various art expos, the chimpanzee’s artwork is highlighted and sold, in collaboration with celebrity guest painters, to continue the best care for the animals domiciled at the sanctuary. This year’s event was no different, taking place at Art Expo NY, Save the Chimps collaborated with Joaquin Phoenix, his wife Rooney Mara, and FedEx, to ensure another successful showing with their latest and greatest artwork on display. It paid off, raising $20,000 with all proceeds going to support Save the Chimps.

To ensure the artwork could be completed prior to the event, the canvases needed to log some serious miles travelling from California to Florida then on to New York for the event. As with a previous art shipment of 30 canvases, FedEx donated the shipping of the 16 framed canvases going to New York. These shipments are part of the company’s FedEx Cares “Delivering for Good” initiative, in which FedEx lends its global network and unparalleled logistics expertise to organizations with precious cargo requests and helps communities before, during, and after crises. Learn more about FedEx Cares Delivering for Good initiative here.

Save the Chimps is the largest privately funded chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. Situated on 150 acres in Fort Pierce, FL, the refuge provides exemplary vet care, nutritious food, and social enrichment to over 220 chimps retired from laboratories, the entertainment industry, the pet trade, and roadside zoos. FedEx has collaborated with the organization for multiple shipments, including transporting the Sunrise Seven from Wildlife Waystation, a California animal refuge, that closed in 2019 to the sanctuary in Florida.

“We hope these paintings will raise much-needed funds for Save the Chimps’ sanctuary and deepen people’s appreciation of these intelligent apes,” said Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. “Chimps are our closest relatives in the animal world. They share 98% of our DNA, so it’s no surprise that some chimps find it therapeutic to paint, much like some humans do.”
