In today’s shifting landscape, the dialogue on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is rapidly evolving. With high turnover for chief diversity officers and employers reevaluating DEI programs, it’s time for a fresh approach to workplace equity. Baker Tilly’s Chief Diversity Officer Shane Lloyd shared insights in a recent webinar with Attuned on how to create an equitable workplace.   

Emily McCrary-Ruiz-Esparza: “Shane was is your point of view, what advice do you have for employers who are worried about resistance or outright opposition?”

Shane Lloyd: “There are a few things that actually come to mind. I actually want to pull Dr. Steel’s comments around Universal Design because said another way that what’s called the curb cut phenomenon. So how do we design for the most vulnerable to the benefit of many and then begin telling some of those stories? So, if we think of curb cuts in the street initially designed for people in wheelchairs but also work for people who are pushing strollers, pushing baby carriages and then also people with temporary injuries or people with bicycles. How do we make some of those connections so people can see that we are aiming to lift all boats even as we are trying to level the playing field and closing gaps? So that mindset, that philosophy of curb cut connected to the storytelling, becomes particularly important. Next, I also think it’s important to make the invisible visible. So oftentimes, we might hear, well, why is there this special program or sponsorship program for women or people of color? Well actually, the reason that these sponsorship programs exist is because there’s actually a ton of very invisible untracked and unaccounted for mentoring that is happening in the people who are well represented in our organizations across levels.”

In today’s digital age, financial fraud is an unfortunate reality that many people face, especially the elderly. In fact, the FBI reported in its 2023 Elder Fraud Annual Report that total losses by those over the age of 60 topped $3.4 billion, an almost 11% increase in reported losses from 2022.

Leslie Wilbur, a risk and control self-assessment specialist at U.S. Bank, said she knows this reality all too well. Her parents, Gary and Cindy, have both experienced attempted elder fraud scams.

The unexpected call

One day, Gary Wilbur received a call from an individual claiming to be from his utility company. The caller said Gary was late on his bill and requested immediate payment over the phone. Gary later said the individual he spoke with was very convincing – and he and Cindy had recently moved so he thought it was possible that there were some final fees they needed to pay.

Ready to rectify the situation, Gary was about to provide his credit card information when Cindy intervened.

Cindy said her gut told her that something didn’t feel right.

“I knew we were current on our bills,” she said, “and when we were hesitant to provide our card number, the caller threatened to have our electricity turned off in five minutes and became aggressive. That is when I had a feeling something was not right. So, we hung up and called Leslie to get her opinion.”

Leslie agreed that something was fishy and that this was a scam. She worked with her parents to notify their bank, the attorney general and the Better Business Bureau of this scam. And, when she called back the number a few days later, it was using a different utility company name.

Gary said he’s lucky they realized something was off.

“If not for Cindy walking into the room, I would have provided my credit card information,” he said. “The person on the phone was very convincing.”

The deceptive search result

Unfortunately, this was not the end of their encounters with fraudsters.

Cindy fell victim to a scam when she wanted to check on an Amazon order she’d recently made. She googled Amazon’s phone number, and a fake number popped up as the first result.

Believing it to be accurate, she provided the representative a lot of personal information when requested to so he could “look up her order.”

During this conversation, the scammer had also convinced her that he needed to connect to her computer remotely to further assist her.

The next day, Cindy noticed small amounts of money being deducted from her bank account and called Leslie. They realized this was another scam, and immediately connected with U.S. Bank to close their accounts, and then went on to report it to all three credit bureaus to put a freeze on her credit.

“I couldn’t believe I fell for this scam,” Cindy said. “But through both experiences, we learned some valuable lessons that will help protect us in the future. We’re both a lot more cautious when we receive phone calls from people we don’t know, and we don’t share personal information until we are sure of who we are talking to.”

The power of family

In both instances, both Gary and Cindy thought to inform their daughter, Leslie. With her help, they were able to identify the scams and report them to the appropriate entities.

“For me, talking about finances used to be taboo,” Gary said. “But, after these experiences, not only are we having open conversations with our children, but we’re also telling our friends and family about our experiences so they know what to avoid.”

Leslie said she also makes a point to check in with her parents regularly and makes sure to tell them about new scams she’s hearing about on the news.

“Throughout both experiences, I learned that it’s important to talk about finances with your parents – and to create a space where they are comfortable to answer questions,” Leslie said. “These open conversations have really helped them realize that they can trust me and come to me for advice when they need it. I think my parents were initially hesitant to tell me anything that was going wrong because they were always the ones protecting us. But now it’s my turn to help protect them.”

Tools to help prevent fraud

Technology can enable a family member or friend to help you monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.

U.S. Bank offers Shared Access, which lets you grant trusted individuals limited mobile and online access to your bank accounts.

It allows them to view some basic account activity to help monitor your accounts for unusual transactions and potentially stop fraud before it happens.

Granting someone Shared Access to your accounts doesn’t give them full rights to your accounts, like adding a signer would, but does allow things like view-only access, which can be a tool to help stop fraud.

You can enroll in Shared Access from your U.S. Bank digital account and, as always, you can speak to someone from your local branch to get assistance.

Account alerts can be another way to spot suspicious activity. Many banks offer real-time text or email alerts about transactions in your account.

University Health Network’s (UHN) Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, Canada, has been a leader in sustainable practices for over twenty years. Guided by their motto “UHN: Practicing Patient and Planet Centred Care,” UHN has won multiple awards for innovative programming that incorporates care for the planet into their patient care model. 

As a further step on the path toward sustainability, Toronto Western hoped to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. To help the hospital realize that goal, UHN tapped renewable energy leader Noventa Energy Partners, famous for their groundbreaking Wastewater Energy TransferTM, or WET® technology, to take advantage of thermal energy from the city’s municipal sewage system to heat and cool their campus.

WET technology replaces conventional heating and cooling systems with a heat transfer process based on recovering thermal energy from wastewater. Whereas most hospitals rely on greenhouse gas-emitting natural gas combustion to heat their facilities, the thermal energy contained in wastewater is low-carbon, highly reliable and renewable energy. 

Though most people don’t ever think about it, wastewater contains abundant thermal energy. It represents a potentially massive unused resource that only requires the will — and the expertise — to make good use of it. 

Assembling the decarbonization A-Team

As remarkable as a WET system is, it doesn’t function on its own. It requires a heat pump as a connection point between the wastewater system and the hospital’s HVAC. Noventa looked to Trane® for that critical link. For the system to make financial sense, the heat pump must be extremely efficient.

Another key reason Noventa chooses Trane for these large-scale projects is the depth of knowledge and capability in Trane engineering equipment and automation solutions and the quality and efficiency of the products. The expertise at Trane and the knowledge to successfully execute large and complex building automation and controls projects while integrating them into existing hospital systems allowed for efficient construction. Implementing the WET solution required working with the hospital without disrupting operations and ongoing coordination with local utilities and the City of Toronto. 

The WET technology system connects directly to Toronto’s sewer system, which remains at a stable temperature throughout the year. The system removes solids from wastewater at the sewer level, then a self-cleaning heat exchanger eliminates the need to handle wastewater inside the buildings. To integrate the recovered thermal energy into the existing HVAC system, a highly efficient, high-temperature capable heat pump is required.  

In summer, the system employs Trane chiller heat pumps containing ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants that reject heat into the sewers. The result: the building is cooled without the need for cooling towers, which would otherwise consume energy and potable water. In winter, heat is extracted from the sewer system, and Trane chiller heat pumps supply the hospital with reliable hot water.

In addition to the heat pumps, the system leverages Trane system controls, including a Trane Tracer® Ensemble, enterprise-wide building management system, valves and meters to control and maximize system operation. Analytics and fault detection diagnostics built into the Trane automation system manage the equipment’s performance under various conditions to ensure a reliable energy supply.

Results

At 19 megawatts, Toronto Western’s WET system is currently the world’s largest raw wastewater energy project. The system is capable of supplying 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of energy, over 2,400 tons of cooling, and over 33,000 MBH of heating.

The WET system will supply 90 percent of the energy needed to heat and cool the hospital’s 1.5 million square foot campus. In total, it eliminates 8,400 metric tons of carbon emissions per year — the equivalent of the carbon output of 1,800 gasoline-powered cars.

CENTENNIAL, Colo., June 12, 2024 /3BL/ – When it comes to advancing mobility, Arrow Electronics is helping to set a new course. With an advanced processor made by NVIDIA, Arrow has designed a first of its kind, AI-powered steering system that uses facial recognition technology to control its latest SAM (Semi-Autonomous Mobility) Car.

Quadriplegic racecar driver Sam Schmidt recently drove at competitive speeds using the new system that he steers through head motions. Arrow engineers developed the new steering system using the latest NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin module, the only platform capable of delivering the high accuracy and low latency needed to control a car at speeds up to 213 mph.

A low-profile stereo camera pair located on the dash captures Schmidt’s movements in real time and feeds the data to the NVIDIA module. Using machine learning, the system processes the information and adjusts the steering angle automatically – within a few thousandths of a second. 

The new AI steering replaces the car’s original four-camera steering that used an older, infrared motion-capture based technology.

“With the AI, it’s more controllable,” said Schmidt. “There’s no lag. It’s instantaneous for high speed.”

The steering enhancements could have everyday applications far beyond the racetrack. The technology could be used to control vehicles and large equipment in settings as different as farming, warehouses, public transit and construction so the operator – physically disabled or not – could perform multiple tasks. 

“The SAM Car has evolved into a technology platform that really personifies enabling the benefit of technology for as many people as possible,” said Murdoch Fitzgerald, Arrow vice president of global engineering and design services.

Luciana Preger credits being exposed to her father’s work at a young age with helping inform her own career in medicine. Luciana is a physician with more than 20 years of experience in pharma and she came to Gilead to help transform treatments for people living with cancer.

“As a child, I loved the opportunity to go on rounds with my father at the hospital in Rio de Janeiro and witness the bedside connections he made with patients,” says Luciana, Vice President, Global Medical Affairs, Oncology. “To this day, I carry with me the emotion that I saw on those rounds at a young age. I don’t want to ever forget that.”

Improving outcomes and access to medicine for people living with disease drives her work. In fact, it was Gilead’s legacy of expanding global access to life-changing medicines that first attracted Luciana to the company, as she longed to be in an environment where she could play a bigger role in bridging the gap between scientific innovation and patient care.

“To truly transform the way cancer is treated, oncology advances must be built on a foundation of equitable care,” she says. “There is no scientific innovation without clear access to it, and access to care is at the forefront of all our work at Gilead.”

Luciana’s career has spanned three continents, from her home country of Brazil to France and the U.S. To have a greater impact in oncology, she felt it was a unique opportunity to be in the Silicon Valley to collaborate directly with renown leaders working on the cutting edge of cancer research and treatment.

Before coming to Gilead, she worked with teams that developed more than 10 oncology therapies — most of them have demonstrated survival benefits in multiple cancers.

These days Luciana is most excited to talk about Gilead’s growing oncology portfolio. More than 30,000 patients have been reached with one of the company’s medicines, and it continues to explore where the medicine can have the greatest impact for people across many difficult-to-treat tumor types.

In Luciana’s role she oversees the strategic direction of Global Medical Affairs initiatives and priorities in oncology, ensuring they help advance scientific understanding of the company’s therapies. Her team drives the dissemination of clinical data by helping review and publish the findings, engaging with key opinion leaders, supporting external research and creating educational programs to inform clinical practices.

All in all, Luciana is pleased to be at a company that is committed to helping people who need its medicines most. “What we do is meaningful. We play a role in helping to prolong life and addressing the unmet needs of people living with cancer worldwide,” she says. “Ultimately, we want to achieve cure and take back possibility in the face of cancer.”

With graduation season still in full swing, high school seniors across the country are gearing up to start their next chapter. Yet in our hometown of Milwaukee, only 9 percent of students will earn both high school and college diplomas,1 and only 14 percent of high school graduates will earn a two- or four-year degree.2 We want to see those numbers improve.

Nine students have been newly selected for the Northwestern Mutual Hometown HBCU Connection Scholarship award. Now in its second year, the scholarship is part of our pledge to invest more than $500,000 in scholarships over the next five years for scholars attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—aiding a total of 36 students. A combination of financial support alongside mentorship and cohort-building, as well as paid intern and job opportunities, helps address the major pain points that prevent Black students from pursuing or maintaining college enrollment.

The recipients were selected based on academic performance, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, work experience, and a statement of career and educational goals. And when asked why an HBCU, many expressed their decision as being rooted in a desire to learn more about themselves by being surrounded by a community of driven individuals. They also have hopes of returning to their hometown post-graduation and offering unique perspectives based on their experiences to those they live and work with.

Presenting our class of 2024:

Tamera Hughes chose Fayetteville State University not only for its business administration program but also because it felt “more homey.” A jewelry maker with a mindset to serve others, Tamera is excited that the Hometown HBCU Connection Scholarship can help students in Milwaukee, like herself, attain new experiences and build connections for future opportunities with Northwestern Mutual.
 Tamia Hughes finds comfort in knowing that her twin sister will be experiencing all the changes right alongside her on campus at Fayetteville State University as she pursues nursing. Tamia feels that her life reflects resilience, starting from the moment she and her twin were born prematurely. She says she’s an example of what can happen when you dream big, work hard and utilize the resources around you.
 Jada Hughes looks forward to being around people that look like her with the same passion and drive to be successful. Majoring in psychology at Morgan State University, her interest in the field sparked from witnessing the various mental health struggles of those around her. While she’ll miss her coveted job at the Incredi-Roll skating rink, she is excited to meet new people and strengthen her interpersonal skills.
 Taylor Harris first learned of Southern University Agricultural and Mechanical College through her track coach, who is a proud alum. A lover of true crime shows, she chose to major in criminal justice. As the founder of her school’s Black Student Union, Taylor chose an HBCU to learn more about the experiences of African Americans outside Wisconsin and the rich history and traditions that an HBCU can offer.
 Zion Thomas is pursuing civil engineering so that he can return to low-income communities and fix infrastructures: “I want to give back to the city I came from.” When he found out that North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University graduates the highest number of Black engineering students in the nation, his bags were already mentally packed. Zion says it has been his goal since childhood to attend an HBCU, and scholarships like this fill in the funding gaps that often deter Black and Brown students from spreading their wings outside Wisconsin.
 For Karrington Parrish, attending an HBCU was less if and more when. With both her parents graduating from HBCUs and her older brother currently attending one, she’s excited to continue the tradition by majoring in health science this fall at Spelman College. She says she loves her city but felt an immediate sense of belonging during her visit to Spelman. Karrington hopes that her story of being first deferred from her top choice and then being accepted later can inspire someone with the belief that a dream deferred is not denied.
 Loren Muwonge chose Spelman College because she wanted to be in an environment where she could explore more of the “untaught herstory/history of our culture and how it’s contributed to the modern-day world.” Majoring in political science, she hopes to use both arts and advocacy to empower communities that are systematically oppressed. While Loren looks forward to experiencing the “Black Mecca” that is Atlanta, she says she’s equally excited for the opportunities this scholarship brings, such as internships and professional development.
 Paishance Collins will miss Milwaukee’s unique music culture but is excited to learn more about the cultural identities of African Americans from the South and other parts of the country. Majoring in business at Fayetteville State University, she hopes to eventually create a nonprofit in Milwaukee geared toward financial literacy for people in her community.
 Ilstlo Beiersdorf Jr.’s love for video games is the reason he’s choosing to major in computer science at Morehouse College. He’s looking forward to the increased rigor of classes and his knowledge being pushed to a different level. As a first-generation college student, Ilstlo says the Hometown HBCU Connection Scholarship is “helping me achieve my dreams.”

More and more people, whether they’re weekend warriors or people living with diabetes, are coming to understand the impact that glucose has on their mood, sleep and health.

This growing movement is thanks in part to a relatively tiny piece of tech called a biowearable.

What is a Biowearable?

You might be familiar with health wearables in the form of watches or rings, but our biowearables go deeper, literally connecting with your body to deliver real-time insights right to your smartphone.

The insights come from the biowearable’s sensor, which measures your glucose level and relays that data every minute. Knowing where you stand helps you make healthy choices in the moment — choices that can help improve your energy, lose weight or manage your diabetes.

Athletes can draw on this information, too. Elite marathoner Eliud Kipchoge is a prime example. He was wearing an Abbott biowearable in 2022 when he finished the Berlin Marathon in 2:01:09, a world record at the time.

Pretty great, right?

The rise of biowearables started in the medical space with our FreeStyle Libre technology for people with diabetes, which is now used by about 6 million people worldwide.1 Studies of the FreeStyle Libre portfolio continue to show positive health outcomes from continuous glucose monitoring.
