Ahh, June. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. That’s right — it’s Pride Month!

There are rainbows and events galore as people from all walks of life celebrate love, diversity, and acceptance. It’s a time of celebration, yes. But it’s also a month for reflection and solidarity, as we commemorate the LGBTQIA+ community and its struggles, triumphs, and ongoing fight for equality and acceptance.

How Pride came to be

While today Pride is often thought of as marches, parties, and fun, it started as a protest against discrimination.

Pride’s origins can be traced back long before the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a well-known queer bar in New York City. This time there was one difference, though. Frustrated by relentless discrimination and police harassment, bar patrons, particularly transgender women of color, fought back. The uprising lasted for several days, spurring other acts of resistance around the country.

On June 28, 1970, a year after the Stonewall Uprising, the first Pride march took place in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago as a way of commemorating the events of the last year. The rest, as they say, is history.

Why we celebrate

Today, June is known as Pride Month. It serves as a reminder of the progress made and the challenges that still lie ahead. It’s also an opportunity to honor the diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community, embracing individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions.

Pride fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment, encouraging people to embrace their authentic selves without fear of judgment or discrimination, something that’s still not guaranteed to everyone.

How to get involved

If you’re eager to make the most out of Pride, there are countless ways to show support and solidarity during Pride Month. Here are some suggestions:

Attend Pride events

From parades and festivals to panel discussions and art exhibitions, Pride offers a multitude of opportunities to connect with LGBTQIA+ people and celebrate their resilience and diversity. Check local listings for events in your area and join in the festivities. Hosting an event? You might want to consider using a .gay domain name to make it easier for folks to find you.

Educate yourself

Take the time to learn about LGBTQIA+ history, issues, and experiences. Engage with books, films, podcasts, and online resources created by queer voices. Understanding the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community is crucial in fostering empathy and promoting allyship. If you need some suggestions, ohhey.gay is a good place to start.

Support LGBTQIA+ organizations

If you’re financially able to, donate to LGBTQIA+ organizations and nonprofits that provide vital resources, support, and advocacy for the community. Whether it’s a local community center, a national advocacy group, or a crisis hotline, every contribution makes a difference. Don’t forget that your time is valuable, too! If you have skills that could be useful or time to spare, reach out to understand how you can help. You can find a list of LGBTQIA+ organizations here.

Amplify LGBTQIA+ voices

Use your platform to elevate the voices and stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Share their experiences, achievements, and struggles on social media, and advocate for inclusive representation in the media, workplace, and beyond.

Be an ally

Stand up against discrimination and bigotry whenever you encounter it—it can be really helpful for the LGBTQIA+ people in your life if an ally does the emotional heavy lifting of why a “joke” isn’t actually funny or why a policy is discriminatory. Where possible, educate others on the importance of LGBTQIA+ rights and equality. Most of all, be a supportive friend, family member, or colleague to the people in your life.

Embracing diversity and love

At its core, Pride is a celebration of love in all its forms. It’s a testament to the resilience, strength, and beauty of the Queer community. As we commemorate Pride Month, let’s honor those who paved the way for progress, celebrate the victories achieved, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance for all. Happy Pride, y’all!

A great way to amplify Queer voices online is by creating a website to house their stories. DotGay is the only domain that has a .gay Rights Protection Policy, and bans any hateful, homophobic, anti-LGBTQIA+ use of a .gay domain name. Plus, 20% of all new .gay registration revenue goes to support LGBTQIA+ organizations! Buy your .gay domain here and fly your pride flag year-round!

A lot can change in a decade. When The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation first visited Harlem Lacrosse in 2014, Dyjae Pearson and Jordany Baltazar were just teenagers looking for guidance in a life surrounded by chaos. They found that structure in Harlem Lacrosse and their coach, Joel Censer.

Now ten years later, they view Harlem Lacrosse and coach Censer as the main catalysts for their successful lives.

“I was never a bad kid,” said Pearson. “I was just falling victim to the environment I was in.”

After being featured in the original Sports Matter video that showcases the impact Harlem Lacrosse has in students’ lives, Pearson became more determined to grow beyond his surroundings and find success outside of Harlem.

“Now I’m a dual sport Division 1 athlete and college graduate, someone with a master’s degree and someone selected to play for the United States Virgin Islands national lacrosse team,” said Pearson.

Understanding the meaningful role Harlem Lacrosse had in his life, Pearson teamed up again with Baltazar to surprise their old coach with a game-changing message.

To celebrate The DICK’S Foundation’s 10th anniversary, Baltazar and Pearson showed up to a recent practice, where they presented the program with a $100,000 Sports Matter grant and new gear for the entire Harlem Lacrosse team.

If you ask Baltazar, the money couldn’t be in better hands.

“One of the biggest things that Harlem Lacrosse provided was guidance,” said Baltazar. “Our success comes from what we’ve learned from coach Censer. He passed it on to us, and we will pass it on to the next generation.”

In addition to lacrosse instruction, Harlem Lacrosse seeks to provide opportunities, relationships, and experiences that activate the skills and traits that put youth on a path to success as students, athletes, and citizens.

The $100,000 grant won’t just make an impact in Harlem. Over the years, the program has grown exponentially.

“Ten years ago, I was one of three employees,” said Censer. “Now, there are 65 employees and Harlem Lacrosse serves around 1,300 students in five major cities nationwide. I feel blessed and lucky to be part of this.”

The dual award wins underscore Sappi’s commitment to ensuring forest health and the use of eco-friendly production. Sappi’s use of wood fiber is a part of its larger goal of finding innovative ways to reduce its environmental footprint and use triple-certified forestry practices. BESSEMER, Ala., June 12, 2024 /3BL/ – The Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation and the Regions Foundation on Wednesday joined community partners to celebrate the completion of three modern homes that represent a series of new investments in Bessemer’s Northside neighborhood.

The prefabricated homes along the 2600-block of 6th Avenue North are part of the Northside Community Housing Development Initiative. The initiative was created by the nonprofit Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation as a crucial component of its long-term work to bring new investments and modern, affordable housing to the neighborhood stretching between downtown Bessemer and nearby Brighton and Lipscomb.

The redevelopment of the Northside community of Bessemer has been a massive team effort that began four years ago. We could not have done it without the support of the Regions Foundation and others.

Brian Giattina, president of the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation

For years, Northside was challenged by disinvestment, abandoned homes, empty lots, and more. But that trend is being reversed with the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation organizing perhaps the largest effort in generations to bring new resources back to the community. In addition to the Regions Foundation, community partners include Deer Valley Homebuilders, Inc., the Housing Affordability Trust, United Bank, the Alabama Power Foundation, the Navigate and Navigate Gives Back organizations and the Goodrich Foundation.

“The redevelopment of the Northside community of Bessemer has been a massive team effort that began four years ago,” said Brian Giattina, president of the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation Board of Directors. “We could not have done it without the support of the Regions Foundation and others. It took a team that could trust the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation and see our long-term vision for Bessemer. Our community partnership with the Regions Foundation is a critical element to our future success. BRC believes the organizations and individuals investing in BRC will see returns for many years. The development of these first three houses is the beginning, not the end, of the redevelopment of the Northside community.”

Construction of the three houses was financed in part by a $150,000 grant from the Regions Foundation, which works to advance economic and community development initiatives across metro Birmingham and beyond. The Regions Foundation is a nonprofit that is funded primarily by Regions Bank.

Today’s milestone is not only about celebrating new homes – it’s about recognizing how the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation has a long-term commitment toward investing in this community.

Marta Self, executive director of the Regions Foundation

“Today’s milestone is not only about celebrating new homes – it’s about recognizing how the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation has a long-term commitment toward investing in this community,” said Marta Self, executive director of the Regions Foundation. “These investments are providing affordable housing for more families while bringing new vitality to the Northside neighborhood. The Regions Foundation is proud to support this work because we see the results that are being created, one block at a time.”

The focus of the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation goes beyond high-quality housing to include investments in public spaces, sidewalks, streetlights and other community assets. The organization also seeks to support commercial development and community neighborhood anchor projects to complement the new housing that is replacing vacant Northside lots.

Prospective homebuyers have two key options to explore securing a new Northside home:

Those seeking down-payment assistance from the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation can apply via Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham.Qualifying clients complete a homebuying education course with tailored advice and guidance designed to help ensure the client is financially prepared for homeownership.Following successful completion of the course, the client becomes eligible to purchase a home through the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation’s down-payment assistance program.Clients not seeking down-payment assistance may contact a lender of their choice to prequalify for financing.Once prequalified, the client can work with the Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation’s real estate partner, Barnes and Associates, to explore available options.Homes are available on a first-come, first-served basis for those who have prequalified.

About Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation
Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation’s core value is that WE have a responsibility to improve the quality of life of our employees and our neighbors. They saw the Northside community, the neighborhood just outside the front gates of BLOX, struggling with vacant and blighted housing, poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and other critical issues.

In 2020, Brian Giattina began to talk to people across the Bessemer community about starting a development organization to lead the effort to revitalize Bessemer. He formed Bessemer Redevelopment Corporation, a 501c3, in August 2020 with a Board that represents individuals born and raised in Bessemer and others who bring housing expertise to the table.

Taco Bell Foundation

IRVINE, Calif., June 12, 2024 /3BL/ – The Taco Bell Foundation announced it is awarding nearly $23 million in grants – the most in the nonprofit’s history – to more than 450 U.S.-based nonprofit organizations that champion educational and career success for young people. The Foundation is distributing a remarkable $8 million more than last year.

The Community Grants program uplifts youth by collaborating with incredible charities that serve the communities of Taco Bell fans and team members. Focusing on promoting academic success, mentorship, career readiness, financial literacy, and social-emotional well-being, these organizations help support many underrepresented youths and prepare them for successful transitions to higher education and beyond.

The nearly $23 million in grants this year had very humble beginnings: an average donation of just 44 cents donated through Round Up at checkout. Since 2019, the Round Up program has raised $150 million in funding for students nationwide to support initiatives such as grants and the Live Más Scholarship.

“It’s incredible to see our fans’ generosity turn into support for organizations that understand their community’s needs best,” said Kelly McCulloch, Global Chief People & Transformation Officer. “If it weren’t for our team members, franchise owners, and everyone in between who inspire customers to Round Up, this initiative wouldn’t be possible.”

For the first time ever, the program has broadened its horizons beyond the U.S. with a $40,000 grant awarded to Junior Achievement Canada raised by Taco Bell restaurants in Canada*. This funding will impact more than 1,500 students and is only the beginning of the Foundation’s journey to expand its influence.

“The Community Grants program has been a fulfilling journey for both the recipients and our organization,” shared James Mayer, President of Taco Bell franchise organization Mayer Management. “Many of our employees have worked with the nonprofits we support, like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, so they’ve seen firsthand the impact we have.”

The Taco Bell Foundation extends its support beyond Community Grants by offering additional funds through its new Impact Fund program. Nonprofit organizations submit creative proposals aimed at dismantling the obstacles hindering youth education access in exchange for the chance to receive funding for their idea. In January, the Foundation distributed $300,000 in Impact Funds to five nonprofit organizations to implement their innovative, education-focused concepts throughout the year.
