After making stops in Laramie, Wyoming and Gernsheim, Germany, the 2024 Curiosity Cube tours in North America and Europe conducted by the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, officially hit their halfway point. Running from February through November this year, the Curiosity Cube has ignited a passion for science with students at 120 events across 95 communities in North America and Europe. The tour includes stops in Scotland, Germany, the USA, England, Ireland, and France, with many more to come this year.

Since the tour set off in February, more than 17,000 visitors have experienced the Curiosity Cube, with plans to engage 45,000 students in 2024. Employee volunteers – scientists in the lab to manufacturing experts on the factory floor – lead these events, showcasing to students and visitors alike the range of careers available in STEM. To date, 585 employees have volunteered nearly 4,000 hours demonstrating their commitment to providing hands-on science education to the next generation of scientists.

“I love volunteering with the Curiosity Cube because it combines my passion for science with my joy of working with children in a meaningful way,” said Crystal Wenrick, PA, USA, Quality Control Chemist, MilliporeSigma. “Watching students enter with an eagerness for hands-on learning, hearing the declarations of ‘I notice’ and ‘I wonder’, and engaging with meaningful real-world conversations with these young learners make the Cube visits both enjoyable and rewarding.”

The 2024 tour is far from over. Through November, the Curiosity Cube will visit several more communities across North America and Europe, including St. Louis, and Boston, USA; Oxford, England; and Madrid, Spain.

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been hot. As personal bests are challenged, records beaten, and underdogs take the top spot on the podium, the temperatures are likewise soaring to staggering heights.

While the heat has not, thus far, shattered any records, it has brought attention to two EHS issues at the center of this year’s Olympics: Indoor air quality and water safety.

Comfort vs. Environmental Impact: Keeping Athletes Cool

Nearly a decade after 196 nations gathered to sign a landmark climate treaty, the Olympic organizers in Paris prepared to host another great gathering of nations, with the goal of making the 2024 summer games the greenest in history.

Organizers initially sought to minimize the carbon footprint of the games by using geothermal cooling within the athlete’s village dormitories. This decision, however, faced immediate backlash from athletes and teams concerned about the very real risk of extreme heat for the duration of the summer games.

Things came to a head as a summer heatwave persisted across France, and it became clear that maintaining athlete performance and safety required rethinking the approach to cooling. Ultimately, athletes were allowed to purchase the use of high-efficiency AC units, chosen by the host committee.

What EHS pros can learn from this moment

The air conditioning controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics offers several valuable lessons for EHS professionals:

Balancing health and sustainability

One of the primary takeaways is the importance of finding a balance between health and sustainability goals. While environmental considerations are crucial, they should not come at the expense of human health and safety. EHS professionals must strive to develop solutions that address both aspects effectively.

Building for longevity

While the dormitories in the Olympic Village were constructed to house top athletes from around the world, they were designed with the intention of converting them to long-term housing after the games conclude. EHS strategic facility design must consider not only the immediate needs of the users but also the long-term impacts and usability of the structures.

Adapting for now

The backlash from athletes was a stark reminder of the importance of considering the perspectives and needs of all stakeholders. The use of high-efficiency AC units powered by renewable energy was a solid compromise that honored both sustainability and safety objectives.

Water Quality in the Seine River

In addition to the challenges posed by the heat, the 2024 Paris Olympics also brought significant attention to the water quality of the Seine River, where several aquatic events, including marathon swimming and triathlons, were scheduled to take place. Ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the Seine ahead of the games was a critical priority – one made more challenging by the effects of climate change.

The Journey to a cleaner Seine

The Seine River has a long history of pollution, but in the years leading up to the Olympics, significant efforts were made to improve its water quality. These efforts included upgrading sewage treatment facilities, implementing stricter regulations on industrial discharges, and launching extensive cleanup campaigns. The goal was to make the river safe for swimming and other recreational activities, a promise that had been made decades earlier.

Despite these efforts, the road to a cleaner Seine was not without its challenges. Heavy rainfall in the weeks leading up to the Olympics caused runoff from city streets and overflow from sewage systems, temporarily compromising the water quality.

In the final days before the games, rigorous testing was conducted to ensure that the water quality met international safety standards. Higher than acceptable levels of contamination caused a slight delay for the swimming portion of the men’s triathlon, though remaining events took place as scheduled. Official reporting on water quality in the Seine over the course of the Paris Olympics is still forthcoming.

The best time to start remediation? Right now.

Improving urban water quality demands long-term planning and substantial investment in infrastructure – and infrastructure takes time.

EHS professionals play a crucial role in guiding their organizations, whether corporate or governmental, to adopt a proactive and strategic approach to remediation efforts. Establishing a comprehensive, forward-thinking remediation plan not only addresses current environmental challenges but also safeguards future sustainability and public health.

The Value of Being Proactive

The important take-away from this year’s summer Olympic games is that the proactive planning of the Paris Organising Committee created an environment in which the challenges of climate change were met with far greater ease than they would have otherwise been.

With global attention focused on Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad), the event organizers have used the opportunity to highlight efforts to make the games more sustainable. While there have been some setbacks, particularly regarding pollution in the Seine River and a reversal on using air conditioners in the Olympic Village, the Paris Olympics have won overall high marks for being environmentally friendly.

The Paris Agreement, signed in 2016, remains the most comprehensive international climate treaty to date, with 196 parties adopting goals to limit global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With this in mind, organizers of the Paris Olympics set ambitious targets to limit the carbon footprint of construction and operations for the 2024 event to half of the emissions at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics.

As detailed in one of our Top Stories from CleanLink, the organizers put in place several measures to reduce emissions. These included powering the events’ operations with 100% renewable energy, prohibiting diesel generators, limiting the number of new buildings, using low-carbon concrete and recycled materials for any construction needed, using seats made of recycled plastic, and ensuring that all furniture and temporary buildings have a guaranteed second life.

Climate change is now top of mind for many major sporting events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, with organizers needing to carefully select host cities and time periods to avoid problems caused by extreme heat, particularly for winter sports. As reported in Virginia Mercury, uncertainty about conditions for winter sports caused the International Olympic Committee to delay the selection of host cities for future Winter Games. FIFA moved the 2022 Men’s World Cup from June to November to avoid extreme heat at the host country Qatar.

Athletes have also expressed concerns about the threats posed to competitors by climate change. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, The British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS) issued its Rings of Fire II report in which elite athletes from 15 sports, along with leading climate scientists and thermal physiologists, discussed the risks and outlined recommendations to safeguard athletes.

In addition to event organizers and athletes, sports businesses such as clothing and equipment brands are also recognizing the risks posed by climate change and are responding by promoting sustainable business practices. According to ISPO, which holds the world’s largest trade fair annually in Munich for sporting goods and sportswear, brands are using eco-friendly materials and reducing carbon footprints through energy-efficient manufacturing.

The fast-moving, multi-billion business of international sports will continue to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Our team at G&A will stay on top of trends in the industry that can serve as examples to guide all businesses on your sustainability journey, staying true to the Olympic motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career journey, here at GoDaddy.

My name is Kayla. I met my husband in high school and we have been together for fourteen years! We have three kids that aren’t so little anymore: Dylan (21), Kayden (18) and Eliana (14). When we aren’t traveling for my daughter’s competitive cheer team, we love to entertain at our house and enjoy our pool to cool off from the Arizona heat. We love to travel to new places, try new food and enjoy living an active lifestyle.

I started working at GoDaddy ten years ago as one of our first Portuguese speaking Guides! My dad is from Brazil and I was able to learn the language with him and our family that still lives in Brazil. I have been in multiple departments and positions within the company, including our multilingual Sales team starting as a Guide and eventually becoming a Supervisor, Billing Supervisor, CDT Manager, and have now found my place as a Senior Sales Manager for our Professional Services team. We focus on “do it for you” products through lead management. Each department that I have been a part of has taught me something new about the business and challenged me in many ways.

What does it take to succeed on your team?

To thrive and succeed on our team, it’s essential to have a deep-seated passion for seeing our customers succeed. This goes beyond mere customer service; it’s about becoming intimately familiar with the unique challenges and pain points that our customers face in their businesses. Our team members excel in not only understanding these issues but being adept at mapping out how our GoDaddy products can directly address these challenges. Our ultimate goal is to produce a tangible return on investment for their business. We value individuals who are not only empathetic listeners but also strategic thinkers, capable of connecting the dots between customer needs and our solutions. Success on our team is measured by the ability to go the extra mile in identifying opportunities that will not only solve immediate problems but also contribute to the long-term success and growth of our customers’ businesses. This customer-obsessed approach, combined with a deep understanding of our product suite and its potential impact, is what sets our team apart and drives our collective success.

What has been one of your proudest moments at GoDaddy?

One of my proudest moments at GoDaddy isn’t tied to a single event but rather a series of inspiring instances where our team truly came together. During the COVID pandemic, I witnessed hundreds of employees rapidly collaborate to ensure our front-line staff had everything they needed to work from home. People stepped up to help, even when it wasn’t part of their job description. The collective effort to support each other and achieve so much in such a short time was incredible. Watching our employees succeed and grow their careers in these moments has been truly rewarding.

How do you feel that the organization supports you to do things that are important to you?

GoDaddy’s commitment to trying new things and challenging the status quo has been pivotal in my growth. The organization encourages experimentation and embraces the idea of failing faster to discover new possibilities. This supportive environment has given me the confidence to attempt innovative projects that have never been done before. It’s gratifying to see how even small initiatives can significantly impact our customers, guides, and the organization. Being a part of a team that cares about aligning personal and company goals is empowering. This year, I’ve been able to show my team how our departmental initiatives directly connect to the company’s Objectives (OKRs). This alignment has been invaluable to our front-line leaders and guides, helping them understand our department’s and organization’s direction. The support I receive from GoDaddy motivates me to bring my best self to work every day, knowing that my contributions are valued and impactful.

What advice would you give to an individual who is starting their career within Care?

Starting your career within Care is a rewarding path. My advice would be to always lead with empathy. Understanding and connecting with people on a human level is key. Remember that every interaction is an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life. Be open to learning, not just from training, but from the people you are aiming to support. Their stories and experiences about small businesses can teach you invaluable lessons that you won’t find anywhere else. Take care of your own well-being. Working in Care can be emotionally demanding, so it’s important to find healthy ways to manage stress and avoid burnout. Seek out mentors and peers in and outside of the organization who can provide support and guidance. Having a group of people that you trust with your career is vital and knowing that you have someone in your corner wanting to see you succeed. Embrace the journey with an open heart and mind and remember that your work has the power to change your customers’ lives!

Running a marathon is an impressive feat on any terrain, but the challenge of taking on 26.2 miles (42.6 kilometers) is even greater when set against the backdrop of the world’s tallest mountain – Mt. Everest.

The Everest Marathon, held every year since 2005 on May 29 and considered the world’s highest marathon, celebrates the historic ascent of Mt. Everest by Tibetan climber Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. The intense marathon begins at Mt. Everest Base Camp at 17,598 feet (5,364 meters), then descends to Namche Bazaar at 11,286 feet (3,440 meters), requiring racers to navigate steep inclines, rocky paths, and dramatic weather changes along the way.

As one of the sponsors for this year’s marathon, 3M provided runners with padded jackets and sleeping bags that featured 3M™ Thinsulate™ technology and race T-shirts designed with 3M™ Scotchgard™ technology. Racers also wore outdoor jackets with 3M Scotchgard water repellent technology. These science-based materials from 3M helped the athletes stay dry, comfortable, and able to focus on the race.

The winner of this year’s Everest Marathon was Arjun Rai Kulung who finished in 3 hours, 52 minutes, and 2 seconds.

Are Georgians interested in composting more at home, or participating in municipal or private composting programs? New research conducted by the University of Georgia seeks to understand current attitudes toward composting and how we can inspire more Georgia families to give it a try in their own backyards.

What Is Composting?

As you likely know, composting is one of the climate solutions Drawdown Georgia has identified for our state. But how does it work?

Composting is a natural process that transforms organic waste materials into a rich, nutrient-dense soil amendment known as compost. This process is a crucial component of sustainable waste management and soil health enhancement, and that’s what makes it a great climate solution.

How Does Composting Break Down Food Scraps?

At its core, composting involves the decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms under controlled aerobic (oxygen-rich) conditions. The process requires four main components: organic materials, moisture, oxygen, and microorganisms.

Organic Materials: These are typically categorized into “greens” and “browns.” Greens are rich in nitrogen and include items like vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and grass clippings. Browns are carbon-rich and include materials such as dried leaves, straw, and paper. A balanced mix of greens and browns is essential for optimal composting.Moisture: Water is necessary for the microorganisms to thrive. The compost pile should be kept moist but not waterlogged, with an ideal moisture content of about 50-60%.Oxygen: Aeration is crucial for the aerobic decomposition process. Turning the compost pile regularly introduces oxygen, which helps to speed up the breakdown of organic materials and prevents the production of unpleasant odors, like methane, associated with anaerobic decomposition.Microorganisms: Bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms are the primary decomposers in composting. These organisms break down organic materials into simpler compounds, ultimately producing humus—a dark, crumbly, and nutrient-rich substance.
