The business secured the Environmental Impact Award for the innovative and responsible design of its ICE03 data center in Iceland.

REYKJAVÍK, Iceland, Dec. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — atNorth, the leading Nordic high-density colocation and built-to-suit data center provider, has won the `Environmental Impact Award’ at the Data Center Dynamics Awards, a category celebrating robust evidence of reducing the environmental impact of data center operations.

atNorth’s expansion of its ICE03 data center in Akureyri, Iceland topped the competition as a result of its design blueprint for data center ecosystems that integrates environmental stewardship with social and economic impact, ensuring long-term, sustainable growth.

ICE03 already benefits from the Nordic’s naturally cool climate and an abundance of renewable energy that enables highly energy efficient Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) and the site was built using sustainable materials such as the laminated wood product Glulam (as an alternative to steel beams) and Icelandic rockwool in addition to a care for the surrounding natural landscape.

All atNorth’s new data centers are designed to accommodate heat reuse equipment as standard and for ICE03, the business formed an alliance with the local municipality to reuse waste heat for community projects in Akureyri, including a community greenhouse that enables local school children to learn about ecological cultivation and sustainable food production. This partnership not only lowers the carbon footprint of the data center but aims to promote the sustainability of locally produced fresh vegetables. It also allows atNorth clients to decarbonize their IT workloads and contributes to the region’s circular economy. With a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.2, compared to a global average of 1.56, the site is able to run high performance workloads in an environmentally responsible way.

atNorth’s data center design blueprint also goes beyond the mitigation of its environmental impact to actively support the local economies and the communities in which they operate. During the first phase of development of ICE03, over 90% of the workforce were local to the area and the business is committed to hiring locally where possible throughout the operational phase.

AtNorth is also committed to good corporate citizenship and actively supports local education, charities, and community projects through volunteer work and financial donations. For example, a donation of a large amount of mechatronics equipment to the Vocational College of Akureyri assists in training local people for data center-related roles. The business has also sponsored a local run in Akureyri, supported local sports teams, the ski facility, and the local search and rescue team.

Additionally, the presence of atNorth’s ICE03 data center in Akureyri has facilitated a new point of presence (POP) in the area – that is a location where telecommunications networks interconnect to enable data transmission. The POP has been established by telecommunications business Farice, who operate 3 submarine cables connecting Iceland to mainland Europe. It will serve as an access point to the larger network and enable international traffic to be routed directly to mainland Europe, greatly enhancing telecommunications security and reliability of service for the benefit of the whole region.

Ásthildur Sturludóttir, the Mayor of Akureyri estimates atNorth’s total investments in the town will equate to approximately 109 million EUR , with investments expected to reach approximately 200 million Euros over time. OSLO, Norway, Dec. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Nel ASA (Nel) (OSE: NEL) is pleased to announce that following a seven-year development program, and now a successful start-up and production of clean hydrogen on the Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline prototype, the Board of Directors has taken the final investment decision to begin construction on up to 1 GW of production capacity for this technology platform in the Herøya facility, Norway. The project is supported by the EU Innovation Fund.

Development of the Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline system was initiated in 2018 and after rigorous testing of various smaller stacks, Nel has now completed full-scale testing of the prototype at Herøya Industripark, Norway, validating market-leading system efficiency. The company expects to launch the system commercially in the first half of 2026 and be able to deliver at scale in 2027.

Building on 100 years of technology experience, Nel’s Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline platform delivers a breakthrough in clean hydrogen economics, dramatically reducing system CAPEX and improving energy efficiency, driving down levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). This leap is expected to improve overall hydrogen production economics, and bridge critical funding gaps for hydrogen installations.

“Our new solution is extremely important for Nel as a company, but also for the clean hydrogen industry as a whole. A significantly improved levelized cost of hydrogen is expected to unlock business cases that were previously not viable without significant subsidies,” says Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel.

The platform is based on a fully modularized, skid-based design where every module is pre-fabricated and factory-tested before shipment in standard container skids. This approach dramatically simplifies engineering, logistics, and installation and is expected to transform complex projects into streamlined product deliveries. The system is designed to operate reliably outdoors, where costs and deployment complexity are further reduced as no dedicated building construction is required.

Nel has been granted up to EUR 135 million in support from the EU Innovation Fund to industrialize the Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline platform, enabling a total annual production output of 4 GW. This funding covers up to 60% of relevant CAPEX and operational costs related to industrialization.

The initial 1 GW of production capacity is estimated at an investment of about NOK 300 million before grants. The EU grant is milestone based and this investment decision is expected to unlock in excess of EUR 10 million as a first payment. The CAPEX is expected to be incurred throughout 2026 and 2027. Overall, the CAPEX for this platform is significantly lower than for atmospheric alkaline production lines.

Following the commercialization and industrialization of the pressurized alkaline solution the company is looking into the book values of the two 500 MW atmospheric alkaline production lines currently idling at Herøya.

CNBC’s Brian Sullivan Emceed as Winners from Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, India, Singapore, Spain, UAE, UK, and US Were Announced

NEW YORK, Dec. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — S&P Global Energy (formerly S&P Global Commodity Insights), the leading global independent provider of data, insights, analysis, and benchmark prices for the commodities and energy expansion markets, tonight honored industry excellence in 21 performance categories and winners from across the globe at the Platts Global Energy Awards gala held at the Casa Cipriani South Street in downtown New York City.

The Awards program, now in its 27^th year and often described as the “Oscars” of the energy industry, recognizes corporate and individual innovation, leadership, and performance in the energy and chemicals industries and bestowed honors on energy companies from Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, India, Singapore, Spain, UAE, UK, and the US. CNBC’s Brian Sullivan — co-anchor of Power Lunch and Asia’s US Market Edition, and Senior National Correspondent — emceed the event, continuing a long history of CNBC guest hosts at the Awards gala.

Houston-based Cheniere was the evening’s triple winner, walking away with Energy Company of the Year, Chief Executive of the Year and Excellence in Energy – LNG honors, winning praise from the Platts Global Energy Awards panel of independent judges for its impressive operational scale; its 2016 pivot to liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and subsequent rise to the largest LNG producer in the US and the second-largest LNG operator globally, all under the leadership of CEO Jack Fusco. Said one judge, “The company provides vital stability to markets in Europe and Asia and across the global stage.” Describing Fusco as a “true trailblazer,” judges pointed to the company’s impressive metrics, ranging from: robust financials, to operational discipline, to commitment to and demonstrated community engagement and an “exemplary” safety record. In selection for Chief Executive of the Year, judges also praised Fusco for his direct stewardship of the company’s strategic shift and growth and his dedication to innovation.

Among the many winners, were those in Platts Global Energy Awards individual achievement categories such as:   

• Lifetime Achievement — This year’s Awards program recognized two individuals that judges believed equally contributed significantly to the energy and chemical sectors across their lifetimes:
  • Zhenguo Li, LONGi Green Energy Technology Company, China
    As visionary founder and current President of LONGi’s Central R&D Institute, Zhenguo Li was honored for demonstrating an unwavering commitment to carbon neutrality throughout his career. Judges pointed to his pioneering work in monocrystalline technology, which not only transformed the solar industry by enhancing efficiency and affordability, but also positioned LONGi as a global leader in solar PV solutions. Li’s voluntary sharing of technologies and advocacy for open innovation and initiatives like the “Solar for Solar” model – which aims to decarbonize manufacturing — underscore his dedication to sustainability. Judges commended him as “a pioneer in China and throughout the world,” recognizing his exemplary leadership in the competitive energy market.
  • Alan Armstrong, Williams, USA
    A 40-year veteran of Williams, Alan Armstrong impressed judges not only as a transformative force in the company, but in the wider energy sector. Rising from design engineer to CEO, Armstrong streamlined Williams’s operations into a top-tier natural gas infrastructure operator with 12 consecutive years of earnings growth. Describing Armstrong as a leader with “deep personal integrity,” judges also pointed to his focus on process safety, global advocacy for pragmatic energy solutions, and his strategic positioning of Williams for a cleaner energy future.
• Chief Trailblazer of the Year: Shu Fei Zeng, founder of KH Marque in Singapore, was recognized by judges for her remarkable achievements in diverting used cooking oil (UCO) from improper disposal to transformation into sustainable biofuels using transparent and traceable supply chains.  Judges were impressed by her ability to elevate KH Marque from a startup to Southeast Asia’s largest UCO collector in just four years with “exceptional” revenue growth and an innovative approach to circularity and climate action. Judges said Zeng’s visionary leadership has not only redefined industry standards but also established a new economic model that contributes significantly to global decarbonization efforts.
• Rising Star Award—Individual:  Judges recognized Katie Aittola, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Strategy and Chief Risk Officer at Duke Energy, for her transformative leadership in reshaping the company’s strategic vision and risk management. Judges commended her for leading a pioneering climate resiliency study that sets new industry standards and for driving innovation in risk financing, which has significantly enhanced Duke’s resilience and operational efficiency. Judges said Aittola’s ability to engage and empower her teams has established her as a respected voice in the energy sector, marking her as a rising star with broad influence.

In addition to its founder and president winning a Lifetime Achievement Award, China’s LONGi Green Energy Technology Company received the Corporate Impact Award for its Targeted Program Global East submission pertaining to its Solar for Safe Births program. Judges pointed to the program’s contribution to improving maternal healthcare in the remote village of Linga Linga, Mozambique. By its installation of a solar-powered freshwater system in the local maternity clinic, judges said LONGi helped to transform childbirth conditions, provide safe care, and reduced health risks for mothers and babies in a community previously lacking essential resources.
