Spotlight: Community Support 

Day in and day out, we work proudly within our communities to make a difference. Southern Company weaves together financial grants, philanthropic programs, community board leadership and employee volunteerism to create positive momentum in communities where we serve, live and play. Our support is broad-based spanning education, health and human services, civic and community, environment, economic development and arts and culture. Social justice and equity considerations are at the forefront of our efforts.

We have a strong philanthropic commitment to our communities which is executed through several private foundations and corporate giving efforts across our subsidiaries. In 2021 we invested approximately $110 million in grants, sponsorships, and impact investments across our territories.

Commitment to Advancing Equity in Education 

In 2022, the Nicor Gas Foundation committed to help fund the proposed Technology Lab within the Goodwill Excel Center School, a tuition-free charter school in Rockford, IL, that supports adult students in earning industry-recognized certifications and high school diplomas. The Excel Center Technology Lab will be a critical component to the Northern Illinois campus and will serve up to 300 low-income adult students per semester as they work to earn their high school diplomas and obtain jobs in growing, sustainable local industries. Nicor Gas is committed to advancing equity in education by serving our neighbors and ensuring students at the Excel Center School have access to the latest technology and tools needed to take the next step in their career.

Congratulations to Stuart Weitzman’s Head of Design Edmundo Castillo, who was honored at Mercado Global’s Fashion Forward Gala. The event took place in NYC on International Women’s Day, Wednesday, March 8th. Castillo was honored for his support of Mercado Global’s mission to empower Indigenous women artisans in rural Central America with the skills they need to become independent entrepreneurs. During his speech to receive the award, he also announced that Stuart Weitzman will be collaborating with Mercado Global for a capsule in Spring 2024.

“With everything I do, I strive to support creating positive change within the fashion industry and support the Latino community. It was an honor to be part of such an inspiring event for this wonderful organization, and I’m so excited to finally be able to share that we are working on a very exciting collaboration together.”

Earning a place on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the 13th consecutive year, and on the DJSI North America Index for the fifth consecutive year, with industry-leading assessment scores. The DJSI World comprises an elite listing of the world’s largest companies based on long-term ESG criteria. Owens Corning received a perfect score in risk and crisis management, materiality, environmental reporting, recycling strategy, and social reporting.Achieving Gold Class distinction in the 2023 Sustainability Yearbook from S&P Global. Gold Class is the organization’s highest honor for excellence in sustainability performance, a distinction Owens Corning has earned for nine consecutive years. With its score of 88/100, Owens Corning earned a Top 1% S&P Global ESG Score designation, the only company in the Building Products category to do so.
