Minnesota is home to one of the largest Liberian populations in the United States. This long-anticipated parade will celebrate the cultural pride, contributions, and resilience of Liberians, Africans in the diaspora, Caribbeans, and other ethnic groups that call Minnesota home.

The parade will begin at 11:00 AM on Shingle Creek Parkway, leading into a full day of festivities at Centennial Park in Brooklyn Center. Attendees can expect:

  • Cultural dancers and traditional attire
  • Community organizations and local leaders
  • Live performances and artists
  • Over 70 vendors, food trucks, and family entertainment

“For a long time, I didn’t see myself represented,” says Marie Dweh, founder of We Are Liberian, who grew up in Brooklyn Center. “I felt too American at home, and too Liberian at school. But over time, I watched more and more Liberians walk into my classrooms. Today, that same generation is becoming the teachers, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and politicians shaping our future. This parade is a tribute to that journey.”

The event is expected to draw thousands from across the Midwest, marking a milestone not only for Brooklyn Center, but for Minnesota — now a cultural hub for the Liberian and greater African diaspora communities.

BEIJING, June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Currently, the world is facing severe climate challenges—frequent extreme weather events and accelerated sea-level rise. Scientific research confirms that excess atmospheric carbon dioxide is the primary driver. Among nature-based carbon absorption solutions, marine “blue carbon” ecosystems play an equally crucial role as forest carbon sinks, through long overlooked.

While the public is already familiar with the carbon sequestration capabilities of forests, global awareness of the ocean’s blue carbon potential remains limited. In this episode, host Jack guides viewers on an in-depth exploration of this blue carbon reservoir, uncovering how blue carbon ecosystems help us fight climate change.

In the video, Jack clearly explains the concept of blue carbon: the natural carbon captured and stored naturally by marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass.

Research footage shows a seagrass meadow, with studies confirming that “despite covering just 0.1% of the seafloor, seagrass stores 10-18% of oceanic carbon.”

However, this invaluable natural asset is under threat. Due to ocean warming, seagrass is experiencing ongoing degradation. This not only signifies a loss of biodiversity but also risks releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere, exacerbating the climate crisis. To address this challenge, nations are taking proactive measures. For instance, in March 2025, the “Chinese Regional Hub for Blue Carbon” project was approved by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

At the end of the video,  Zhao Liang, Project Coordinator WWF China, shares insights on blue carbon conservation and future development. Welcome to watch the full video via the link below and to discover the ocean’s silent yet powerful “climate regulator”—blue carbon!

SHANGHAI, June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On June 11, 2025, at the 18th SNEC, Hithium, a leading global energy storage technology company, held a product safety technology sharing event themed Leading the Future, Forged for Safety and unveiled the full results of the world’s first all open-door large-scale fire test of its ∞Block 5MWh energy storage system, and was also awarded the large-scale fire test certification by international testing authority UL Solutions.

Hualei Wang, project manager for the fire test, shared an overview of the test background and key details. A video of the open-door fire test was also shown on-site, offering a comprehensive view of the test procedure, technical highlights, and results.

The open-door fire test was initiated by intentionally heating eight battery cells inside container A to trigger thermal runaway, causing propagation between cells. As the battery’s pressure relief vents opened, an ignition system ignited the released gases, initiating full combustion with the container doors kept wide open to allow continuous oxygen flow. This setup maximized heat exposure to adjacent containers B, C, and D. The test was conducted under four extreme conditions: all open-door combustion, dual 15 cm extreme spacing, fire suppression system deactivated, and 100% State of Charge (SOC).

  • Peak Fire Phase: At the fourth hour of testing, the fire reached its peak temperature of 1,372°C. Temperature monitoring confirmed that cell temperatures in all adjacent containers remained well below the cell thermal runaway initiation threshold defined by the UL9540A cell-level test (≤42°C in Container B, ≤80°C in Container C, and ≤70°C in Container D).
  • Sustained Combustion Phase: After 15 hours of combustion, the open flame was extinguished. The initiating container remained structurally intact without deformation or collapse. No combustion or thermal runaway propagation occurred in the three adjacent containers. Containers B, C, and D only experienced minor surface damage, while internal battery modules remained completely unaffected.

The completion of the test was made possible by Hithium’s multi-layered safety architecture, spanning the cell, module, and system levels. At the cell level, heat-resistant anode/cathode materials, functional electrolyte additives, and high-temperature separators raised thermal thresholds. At the module level, low-conductivity insulation and flame-retardant top covers minimized propagation risk. At the system level, a high-strength container frame and heat-resistant enclosure materials maintained structural stability under extreme heat.

At the event, UL Solutions awarded Hithium a certification for the large-scale fire test, recognizing its compliance with UL 9540A and NFPA 855 standards. Qifeng Xiao, General Manager of the Energy and Automation Division, Asia Pacific at UL Solutions, stated at the certification ceremony, “Hithium’s pioneering open-door extreme fire test was the first to be conducted under full oxygen exposure—far beyond the industry standard closed-door with explosion vent fire test model. The positive outcome not only validated the system’s self-contained fire protection, but also established a valuable reference for the development of global energy storage safety standards through the world’s first open-door fire test.”

This pioneering fire test not only demonstrated Hithium’s strong technical capabilities but also reflected its full confidence in the safety performance of its energy storage systems through a fully transparent testing process, contributing important data and practices to the industry. Hithium will continue to invest in safety innovation—tightening the “seatbelt” for the global transition to green energy.

At the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Friends of Science Society urges world leaders to abandon Net Zero and climate-aligned finance goals, citing Vaclav Smil’s new book on the impossibility of Net Zero.  Retired energy economist, Robert Lyman, has issued several reports questioning Prime Minister Carney’s energy superpower plans, which show that climate policies are strangling the Canadian economy.

CALGARY, AB, June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Based on the economic and security goals outlined in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s G7 press release of June 07, 2025, Friends of Science Society urges world leaders to abandon Net Zero and climate-aligned finance goals.  Renowned energy author Vaclav Smil’s latest book “2050. Pourquoi un monde sans carbone est presque impossible” [translation: “2050. Why a carbon-free world is almost impossible.”] makes the case that such goals are extremely unlikely.  Smil’s key points are summarized in French and English in this post on “Science, Climat et Energie.”  Professors Happer and Lindzen show, in this new report, that carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are not driving global warming; expensive efforts to reduce these gases will lead to deindustrialization, poverty and famine worldwide.  As noted in this CLINTEL report which cites Obama’s former science advisor, the 2 degree Celsius (or 1.5 °C)  Paris Agreement target was made up; it is not a product of science, thus compliance with the agreement will not provide “climate insurance” from extreme weather or wildfires; the objective is unaffordable and unnecessary.

Friends of Science Society has issued an Open Letter to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions in Canada, explaining that Net Zero targets are unattainable and why. The letter challenges the push for the Climate-Aligned Finance Act (CAFA) “…would put such organizations in the position of acting in a fraudulent manner, as no amount of financial effort can make Net Zero a reality; and society will need to use fossil fuels for decades to come.”  CAFA is also presently promoted by Catherine McKenna and her “Women Leading on Climate” group.

Prime Minister Carney has raised Canadian expectations of Canada becoming an energy superpower overnight leading to a bold economic recovery, but the likelihood of these propositions are questioned by Robert Lyman in two new reports, titled: “Canada’s Infrastructure Selection Criteria – Deciphering The Rhetoric,” and “Energy Superpower Vs. Net-Zero?  Don’t Jump!” Robert Lyman, is a retired energy economist who for 27 years served in the Canadian government as an advisor and manager on energy, environment and transportation issues and has written extensively on these issues since that time.

As discussed in Lyman’s “Deciphering the Rhetoric,” Premier Tim Houston of Nova Scotia, Canada has proposed “Wind West,” a massive 66-Gigawatt offshore wind farm, which he claims could provide 27% of Canada’s electrical generation needs.   “Deciphering the Rhetoric” explains why this proposal is uneconomic and would have the potential to cause national blackouts.  On April 28, 2025, Spain and Portugal both experienced national blackouts, primarily due to far too great a ratio of renewables on the grid, versus more stable frequency control which comes from conventional inertial, dispatchable power.

Though the Pathways Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been highlighted by both Prime Minister Carney and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson as a possible project of national importance, Robert Lyman’s 2019 report “The Carbon Capture and Storage Trap – for Taxpayers” is a cautionary tale.  Friends of Science Society’s “Getting to Net Zero” in Canada shows the Canada Energy Regulator’s proposals for applying CCUS to reach Net Zero are unrealistic: video explainer.

Friends of Science Society expresses concerns that the push for Net Zero is simply a mirage to foist Article 6 carbon trading and so-called “Nature-based Climate Solutions” on corporations, and ultimately consumers, as outlined in this Western Standard report, “But, while many net-zero bankers see this as a gold mine, energy analyst Anas Alhajji calls carbon accounting the ‘Mother of all Enrons.'”

Canada’s Curious Climate Connection with Europe is a Friends of Science video explainer that offers insights, pros and cons, into suggestions that Canada should join the EU.  To achieve global security and prosperity, G7 attendees should abandon Net Zero, embrace conventional energy and reject Climate-Aligned Finance, says Friends of Science.

BALTIMORE, June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On June 3, over 250 community members, leaders, and mentors gathered at Baltimore Unity Hall for the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund’s (BCYF) second annual Community Exhibition. The evening was a celebration of the impact made by the city’s youth serving nonprofits and an inside look into their plans for the future, including the launch of #bcreds. The new online program designed by BCYF specifically for grassroots and community-based organizations offers accessible, high-quality financial learning experiences across all devices.

This high-energy event was the culmination of BCYF’s 6-month city-wide learning series titled the learning lab, diligently designed to strengthen Baltimore’s youth development ecosystem. Each event over the past six months was curated with one intention in mind: to explore innovative models and strategies that align with BCYF’s city-wide initiative to build Baltimore’s very own Youth Master Plan (YMP).

With opening remarks from community leader and partner, Mayor Brandon Scott, attendees were welcomed into an immersive experience highlighting the grantees’ accomplishments that would not have been possible without BCYF’s financial support and capacity building programs.

“This Community Exhibition is what happens when you invest in grassroots leaders and give the space, support, and respect that they need to be successful. Through the learning lab, BCYF has created a dynamic citywide experience with one thousand participants and 60 hours of programming with a focus on equipping youth and adult leaders with the skills, networks and tools to help them grow into better versions of themselves,” Mayor Scott explained. “The results speak for themselves. They are building a capacity for these grassroots organizations making them more sustainable, more connected, and even more impactful.”

While grassroots leaders showcased their masterful storytelling skills upstairs developed through the learning lab, participants also indulged in an immersive gallery walk and live demonstrations for #bcreds downstairs.

“Walking through the gallery and seeing just how much output and outcomes these youth serving organizations have been able to make within our community was extremely moving,” one attendee recalled. “These organizations are not only protecting our future leaders through their programming, but they are introducing them to things like the arts, STEM, marketing, and yoga that they otherwise would have never experienced. As the community leaders shared their organizations success stories, many of their previous youth participants were in the audience. They shared how they have received scholarships, graduated college debt-free and returned to serve the same community that poured into them during their adolescence.”

Nonprofit and grassroots organizations were also invited to sign up for #bcreds to strengthen their capacity through short, skills-based learning opportunities focused on real-world topics like financial management, strategic planning, fundraising, and program design. The web-based learning program was thoughtfully designed with retention in mind, ensuring users actively absorb the material rather than simply read through it.

The first #bcreds course is now available online, titled Making $ense: Reading Financial Statements for Nonprofits. The course teaches users how to read and analyze financial documents to increase their confidence as their organizations prepare for financial planning and growth opportunities. These self-paced training sessions are free and accessible to anyone serving Baltimore’s youth, underscoring BCYF’s commitment to not just building programs, but strengthening the organizations behind them.

Events like the learning lab and platforms like #bcreds offer a national invitation for communities to rethink how learning, leadership, and community investment go hand in hand—positioning Baltimore as a model for innovation in nonprofit management and youth development.

About the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund:
The effort to create a dedicated fund to support programs for Baltimore’s young people was launched in 2015 by then-City Council President Bernard “Jack” C. Young — a response to the unrest in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, an event that sharply illuminated longstanding inequities in public funding in Black communities. Supported by Baltimore City residents’ tax dollars, since 2020 BCYF has awarded over $31M to Baltimore programs serving children and youth.

The Solutions Project releases 2024 analysis of major environmental and climate justice wins across the U.S.

OAKLAND, Calif., June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Just Solutions, in partnership with The Solutions Project, released a new report, “Analysis of Innovative Environmental & Climate Policy Achievements,” that showcases nine community-driven policy wins that are advancing solutions to the climate crisis at the local, state, and federal levels. These policies have the potential to benefit more than 41 million people and unlock over $4.3 billion in public investments annually.

These policies were the result of multi-year community organizing campaigns led by frontline groups, most of which are Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color, reflecting the fact that these communities are disproportionately impacted by climate change. These wins help combat and mitigate environmental harm, while also creating job opportunities, driving clean energy, and public health investments.

“At a moment when the federal government is attempting to gut climate investments, and rollback legislation and hard won progress, this report provides evidence of on the ground expertise and what’s possible when frontline communities are resourced to lead,” said Gloria Walton, President & CEO of The Solutions Project. “Our grantee partners aren’t just shaping policy, they are creating bold, lasting impact to show what a Just Transition looks like in action. Together, these wins offer a roadmap for climate policies that centers equity and accountability. Now more than ever, we have to trust community leaders and resource them like never before.”

Major policies highlighted in the report include:

  • New York’s Climate Superfund Act that requires fossil fuel companies to pay an estimated $3 billion annually to fund climate resilience
  • Chevron Settlement in Richmond, CA which resulted in a historic $550 million over 10 years investment to the communities from one of the country’s largest polluters
  • Federal EPA rule on chemical emissions, a major win for Gulf South communities that have been organizing for years to reduce toxic pollution

“The findings show that solutions to the climate crisis are all around us, being developed and advanced by the local communities directly and disproportionately impacted,” said Aiko Schaefer, Director of Just Solutions. “Positive change is not only possible, it is actually happening in so many places already. What is needed is more funding to scale and to replicate successful programs, support new ideas, and enforce and protect climate solutions that already exist.”

While the wins highlighted in the report are significant, many are now under political threat from the current administration. Sustained philanthropic support is critical to defend and support these wins, to scale proven models that work, and advance new community-driven policies.
