Landmark investment will accelerate Camp Fire’s bold strategic vision for character development innovation

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Innovative youth development organization Camp Fire National Headquarters has secured a five-year $10 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to amplify its 115-year legacy of character development, strengthening leadership and programming across 44 affiliates that serve youth in 24 states.

The grant is part of Lilly Endowment’s Character Development Through Youth Programs initiative, which awarded $10 million each to six national youth-serving organizations recognized for their strategic approaches to fostering positive character traits in young people ages 5 to 18.

Camp Fire’s Connected Leadership, Connected Character program will transform its network by providing targeted professional development that enables staff at all levels to intentionally integrate character virtues into daily practice—turning values into action and ensuring that every organizational decision strengthens character development for both adults and youth.

“Lilly Endowment’s investment is both a profound validation of our 115-year legacy and a catalyst for our future,” said Shawna Rosenzweig, CEO of Camp Fire. “Growing up is hard, and character virtues serve as a compass that guides young people through life’s toughest moments. This partnership positions us to dramatically expand our reach while deepening the quality of the character development experiences we provide to youth at scale.”

The Endowment’s Character Development Through Youth Programs initiative is designed to help youth-serving organizations create, test, implement and sustain strategies that support character development. Further cultivating character and leadership in Camp Fire staff sets the foundation for transformational youth development in the young people they serve nationwide. Adults who are self-aware, resilient and grounded in purpose model these same traits for young people—demonstrating that character is not only taught but caught through example.

This landmark investment accelerates Camp Fire’s bold strategic vision for character development innovation and will enable the organization to:

  • Launch a comprehensive leadership development program that cultivates character-driven leaders across four organizational levels—from emerging professionals and middle managers to affiliate and organizational leadership.

  • Strengthen network capacity by equipping leaders to model Camp Fire’s four core character virtues while driving continuous improvement and organizational health. This systematic approach integrates virtue development into management practices, creating stable organizations that effectively deliver character programming and measurable outcomes for young people.

  • Accelerate strategic growth by scaling proven programs to reach more youth in more communities while maintaining quality rooted in core character virtues. This balanced approach ensures that expansion creates meaningful impact, with each new program fostering character development in both staff and participants.

“From the earliest days of its grantmaking, the Lilly Endowment has supported projects to encourage character development, especially among young people,” said Ted Maple, the Endowment’s vice president for education and youth programs. “With Camp Fire’s distinctive mission and programs, they are embarking on new creative and strategic approaches to support youth in developing character traits that will enhance their prospects in life and help them develop into responsible citizens who will have a positive impact on the lives of others.”

KIGALI, Rwanda, Oct. 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei and Rwanda’s Ministry of Education announced the completion of the first phase of the Smart Education Project and the launch of a new Huawei TECH4ALL DigiTruck project at Kagarama High School in Kigali on October 3.

The two projects represent Rwanda’s commitment to the digital transformation of the education sector and upskilling of the Rwandan population with digital skills.

“Today’s joint celebration is more than just a ceremonial occasion; it is a testament to Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to inclusive, technology-driven education. These initiatives strengthen international cooperation, promote digital equity, and advance sustainable national development,” said Joseph Nsengimana, Minister of Education in Rwanda

The Smart Education Project has connected 1,500 schools to high-speed Internet, deployed two cutting-edge data centers, and laid the foundation for a dedicated education network to support digital teaching and learning nationwide.

Aligned with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation, this project is designed to support Rwanda’s transition into a globally competitive knowledge-based economy. In the near future, the benefits of this project will be expanded to further bridge the digital divide and continue to empower teachers and students with cutting-edge technology.

The milestone means nearly 1.5 million students across Rwanda — in Kigali as well as remote, rural communities — can now access high-quality education resources on an equal basis.

“A student in Kigali can now share knowledge remotely with peers in Rusizi. These are the real impacts of digital inclusion: bridging distances, breaking barriers, and giving every child the chance to dream bigger,” said Jin Jiqing, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Rwanda.

Alongside the Smart Education Project, Huawei and the government’s Ministry of ICT & Innovation and Ministry of Education have launched the DigiTruck project to deliver free and tailored digital skills training to underserved communities, with a focus on out-of-school youth, girls, and farmers. Equipped with laptops, Internet access, and digital learning devices, the DigiTruck is a mobile, solar-powered classroom that can be driven to remote communities, with expert trainers on hand to provide training even in areas that lack Internet access or a power supply.

“Initiatives like the DigiTruck represent more than technology, they are a gateway to opportunity, empowerment, and Rwanda’s future as a knowledge-driven economy,” said Eraste Rurangwa, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of ICT and Innovation in Rwanda.

Aligned with the NST2 goal of training 1 million citizens in digital skills, the DigiTruck will travel across all 30 districts of Rwanda with the goal of training 5,000 Rwandans over a period of three years.

To date, Huawei TECH4ALL DigiTrucks have provided training for more than 17,000 people in 7 countries in digital skills such as using devices and office software, applying for jobs online, starting an online business, and coding and robotics.

During the promotion, anyone can support the scholarship program by donating during a Sport Clips visit. On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, participating Sport Clips locations will offer free haircuts to veterans and active-duty service members in what it considers the “biggest haircut day of the year” honoring veterans. More than 80 percent of the funds raised each year come directly from generous clients, with the balance coming from Sport Clips’ suppliers and product partners.

Since its inception in 2013, the program has awarded more than 3,350 scholarships totaling more than $15 million, providing vital educational assistance to veterans as they transition from military service to civilian careers.

“As an Air Force veteran, I know firsthand the challenges that come with transitioning from military to civilian life,” said Gordon Logan, founder and chairman of Sport Clips, and VFW Life member. “It is our privilege to stand beside those who have served our nation and, through Help A Hero Scholarships, ensure they have access to the resources needed to thrive beyond their military service.”

“Sport Clips’ annual Help A Hero campaign is a testament to the power of community, providing a life-changing opportunity for veterans transitioning to civilian life,” said VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore. “The Help A Hero Scholarship is a crucial lifeline, empowering them to earn a degree or skilled trade without the burden of student loans, ultimately helping them secure a successful career. The VFW is excited to show our support and open the door to better futures for thousands of veterans and their families.”

Help A Hero Scholarships provide up to $5,000 per semester to help cover tuition and fees. • China’s leading electronics recycling
     and trading
    platform, ATRenew, is
    announced as
a Finalist in the Building a Waste Free World category

SHANGHAI, Oct. 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — ATRenew Inc. (“ATRenew” or the “Company”) (NYSE: RERE), a leading technology-driven pre-owned consumer electronics transactions and services platform in China, is today revealed as a 2025 Finalist for the world’s most prestigious and impactful environmental award, The Earthshot Prize. ATRenew joins a historic coalition of leaders recognised for driving climate action and inspiring everyone to build a better future for people and planet.

Founded by HRH Prince William in 2020, The Earthshot Prize recognises solutions from different geographies, sectors and stages in their life cycle, and is dedicated to solving our planet’s greatest challenges. The Prize in 2025 marks the halfway point in the Earthshot decade, as the mission gathers pace in this next critical juncture.

In a world where global e-waste is projected to rise to 82 million tonnes annually by 2030[1], ATRenew’s mission is critical. At the heart of its proposition is Matrix, an AI-powered system installed in its eight regional operation centers. Used smartphones and other devices are first collected directly from consumers through a network of over 2,000 recycling stores across China. They are then transported to the regional operation centers, where Matrix assists with standardised processes including quality inspection, grading and pricing. Devices are then warehoused and made available for resale, primarily through ATRenew’s online platforms. By streamlining this end-to-end process, ATRenew helps extend the lifespan of electronic devices and help reduce e-waste.

ATRenew has established a circular economy model for second-hand electronics which now has huge potential for global scale to promote decarbonisation and the sustainable consumption of electronic goods. The company has become a solution not only for China, but for emerging markets globally, expanding into Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and offering its self-service recycling technology and solution to partners in Japan and Sweden.

It is this leadership, progress and future potential that impressed The Earthshot Prize during the selection process in the search for outstanding leadership for the 2025 Prize.

Prince William, Founder and President of The Earthshot Prize said:
“As we reach the halfway point of the Earthshot decade, I am truly inspired by this year’s Finalists, which embody the urgent optimism sitting right at the heart of our mission. In just five years, The Earthshot Prize has shown that the answers to our planet’s greatest challenges not only already exist, but that they are firmly within our grasp.”

Xuefeng Chen, CEO and Founder of ATRenew said: Being recognised as a Finalist of The Earthshot Prize marks the culmination of 15 years of work to help advance a zero-carbon future and reduce the growing flow of e-waste in modern society. With this accolade, we hope to spotlight our circular economy model for the second-hand electronics industry with a model that can be applied globally, at scale.”

This year’s cohort were selected from nearly 2,500 nominees submitted by the Prize’s network of 575 nominators from 72 countries. The 15 Finalists were chosen based on assessments undertaken by The Earthshot Prize’s selection partners and Expert Advisory Panel, a global group of more than 100 subject-matter experts with deep backgrounds in conservation, science, technology, business, finance, academia and policy.

Members of The Earthshot Prize Council are HRH Prince William, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Cate Blanchett, Indra Nooyi, Stella McCartney, José Andrés, Wanjira Mathai, Nemonte Nenquimo, Luisa Neubauer, Naoko Yamazaki, Ernest Gibson, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Solutions selected align to the five ‘Earthshots’ – simple, ambitious and aspirational goals but more relevant than ever before.

CALGARY, AB, Oct. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On Sept. 25, 2025, Dr. Joseph Fournier gave a presentation on “Food Prices, Farming and Net Zero Ideology” for Friends of Science Society in Calgary, Alberta.  Fournier is a Senior Scientist and rancher, and he addressed four main themes.

Fournier discussed how hydrocarbons and the internal combustion engine are largely responsible for the modern era, resulting in rapid population growth, health and longevity, and the technology boom.  The audience was surprised to learn that only a small fraction of the calories in the food-supply-chain are derived from photosynthesis – the remainder is from hydrocarbons.

While the European Union and the Canadian government have introduced legislation to cut methane emissions from oil and gas and agriculture, Fournier showed that Canada’s Boreal Forest’s natural methane emissions are largely ignored, but dwarf those from our agricultural sector and oil & gas industry.  He explained how methane emissions from Mother Nature in Canada may easily be ten times that of human industry and agriculture.  Consequently, stringent methane restrictions on the oil and gas industry are meaningless.

Cows are the new coal” is a mantra of the “climate cartel” according to the US Republican House Judiciary report; Fournier says that’s not true.

Fournier explained how the Haber-Bosch process of creating synthetic fertilizer led to abundant crop production. Thus, attempts by climate activists and governments to limit the use of synthetic fertilizers on farms will only result in reduced crops – leading to higher prices, potential famine or starvation for swaths of the developing world, food poverty at home and farm or family bankruptcy.

Fournier then discussed the 20th Century Green Revolution which led to a productivity boom and massively reduced land-use requirements.  Modern farming practices like no-till seeding were shown to increase soil moisture and drought resistance.  What once took armies of men to plant and harvest can now be done by one person with hi-tech agricultural equipment, taking off crops that can feed hundreds of people.

Fournier’s early scientific interest was in fuel cell technology.  In his presentation he debunked the notion that farm equipment could be decarbonized with battery technology, explaining that just the weight of a typical lithium-ion battery required for the massive farm equipment used today, would compact and destroy the health of the soil.

According to Fournier’s calculations, Canada’s agricultural industry produces five to six times the amount of food required for domestic consumption, making it a vast economic driver for Canada and a benevolent supplier of food for a hungry world.

Fournier’s presentation debunks the premise of WWF and its pre-COP30 program wherein it claims that “Food systems sit at the heart of the climate change crisis. They are a primary source of greenhouse gas emissions but also hold powerful pathways to adaptation, resilience, restoration and justice…”

According to CLINTEL, the climate intelligence network based in The Netherlands, and the recent US Department of Energy Climate Science Report, Steve Koonin’s book “Unsettled,” and Judith Curry’s book “Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking our Response,” there is no climate crisis or climate emergency. Thus, Friends of Science Society says measures like carbon taxes, a price on carbon, methane restrictions and climate legislation to curb fertilizer use or to cull beef cattle, sheep, dairy cows and other animals on farms is unnecessary.

Fournier’s presentation shows that Mother Nature is the largest emitter of methane in Canada.  Like Friends of Science Society, Fournier explores the research on his Substack which shows that the Sun is the main driver of climate change, not carbon dioxide.  In the climate activist community, the benefits of carbon dioxide go unaccounted for, says Friends of Science Society.

If Canada is to reach its stated goal of being an energy Superpower, Friends of Science Society says that Canada must disengage from the Canada-EU Green Alliance Agreement and accept that there is no climate crisis.  As shown in “Insights from a Sankey Diagram” on Friends of Science Society’s blog, Canada is light years away from decarbonization.  Dr. Fournier’s presentation shows the perils of fiddling with farming methods and technology – very risky in a hungry world.

About
Friends of Science Society is an independent group of earth, atmospheric and solar scientists, engineers, and citizens that is celebrating its 22nd year of offering climate science insights. After a thorough review of a broad spectrum of literature on climate change, Friends of Science Society has concluded that the sun is the main driver of climate change, not carbon dioxide (CO2).

World Animal Day is an international day of action celebrated annually on Oct. 4 to raise awareness about animal welfare and promote compassionate treatment of all animals — domestic, wild and farmed. Observed in more than 100 countries, it unites advocates, organizations, and communities in a shared commitment to protecting animals and advancing their well-being through education, advocacy, and action.

For Project AnimalAid, the day underscores the vital connection between compassionate care and planetary health.

Project AnimalAid collects surplus veterinary equipment, technology, and medical supplies from hospitals (veterinary and human), manufacturers, zoos, and individuals, redistributing them, free of charge, to veterinarians and animal care professionals in underserved communities worldwide. This model not only improves animal welfare — from street dogs to endangered wildlife — but also reduces waste and supports environmental sustainability.

“World Animal Day reminds us that every act of kindness toward animals contributes to a healthier, more humane world,” said Meghan Curtis, executive director of Project AnimalAid. “Our work is rooted in the belief that improving animal welfare and reducing medical waste go hand in hand.”

This World Animal Day, Project AnimalAid invites individuals, veterinary professionals, and organizations to take action:

  • Donate surplus supplies or make a financial contribution
  • Volunteer time or expertise
  • Share Project AnimalAid’s mission and amplify awareness
