Finds critical link between full-scope emissions targets and overall emissions reductionsSpotlights noteworthy examples of actions taken by Food Emissions 50 companies

September 17, 2024 /3BL/ – As more comprehensive climate reporting rules go into effect worldwide, a new Ceres analysis of corporate disclosures in the food sector finds that companies are making progress towards reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions. However, slower progress on addressing supply chain emissions is holding companies back from reducing the total emissions needed to transition their business to a low-carbon economy.

Notably, Ceres’ report, Taking Stock: The State of Climate Action and Disclosure in the Food Sector, reveals food companies with science-based emissions targets covering their total emissions (scope 1 and 2 from their direct operations and scope 3 from their supply chains) are more likely to report lowering their overall emissions.

That important takeaway for the food sector is one of the key findings outlined in the report, which is based on a pioneering analysis by Ceres into the climate-related information disclosed by 50 of the largest North American food companies engaged by investors through its Food Emissions 50 initiative. Through the analysis, Ceres sought to answer two big questions: now that food companies are reporting emissions and setting targets, are companies genuinely reducing their emissions? And how can disclosures be improved to not only increase transparency but also spur meaningful action in on climate?

Ceres found:

1. 60 percent of companies are making progress on scope 1 and scope 2 emissions.

2. Slower progress on addressing scope 3 emissions is holding companies back from reducing total emissions.

3. Companies with full scope emissions reduction targets are more likely to be reducing emissions.

4. Companies are beginning to clarify their emissions disclosures, but there is room for improvement to enhance comparability and the ability to assess progress over time.

“Ceres’ new report serves as a lens into the current state of climate action in the food sector, and while some companies are making positive progress, too few are making significant reductions in their total emissions,” said Meryl Richards, program director, food and forests at Ceres. “Since emissions reductions efforts may take time to bear fruit in this sector, it’s even more important for companies to publish climate transition action plans so that investors know they are poised to mitigate risks and seize opportunities in the transition to a lower-emissions economy.”

In fact, by crunching disclosure numbers, Ceres identified scope 3 emissions as a critical area where the food sector needs to take more ambitious and urgent action. The analysis showed a clear connection between what companies disclosed as their supply chain emissions – the largest source of the sector’s emissions – and their total emissions. No company reported decreases in their overall emissions without their scope 3 emissions also dropping, and even large reductions by companies in scope 1 and 2 were not able to compensate for rising scope 3.

The release of Ceres’ new report follows a monumental year for climate disclosure and increased climate action in the food sector, one of the highest-emitting sectors and responsible for one-third of global emissions. In the U.S., landmark reporting regulations from the Securities and Exchange Commission and California were adopted last year, and global companies are preparing to disclose climate transition plans in line with the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which went into effect a year ago.

Ceres’ report lays out noteworthy actions taken by major food companies to tackle emissions in the past year as examples others can follow to accelerate sector-wide progress. They include:

ADM reported how the company broke down its emissions footprint to pinpoint purchased goods and services – its primary emissions driver – as where it needs to prioritize cutting emissions.McDonald’s and Hershey have set specific targets to reduce land-based GHG emissions validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative.General Mills, Kraft Heinz, and Starbucks committed to disclose their methane emissions and plans to reduce supply chain agricultural emissions by becoming founding members of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance.A growing number of companies are publicly supporting key legislation that could advance the adoption of lower-emissions practices in the food sector, such as the Enteric Methane Innovation Tools for Lower Emissions and Sustainable Stock Act.

In addition, the report mentions that 38 Food Emissions 50 companies now report their scope 3 emissions, up from just 20 companies when the initiative was launched in 2021. Ceres Food Emissions 50 Company Benchmark continues to track the progress companies are disclosing on essential elements of food sector climate transition plans, including General Mills publishing a plan that quantifies the climate strategies needed to meet their emissions reduction targets.

“With so much work needed for the food sector to reach a 1.5°C future, it’s encouraging to see a growing number of companies report emissions targets and publish more robust climate transition action plans,” said Nako Kobayashi, Food Emissions 50 manager at Ceres. “As our report underscores, comprehensive emissions disclosures are the best way for external stakeholders to keep track of the sector’s progress, but food companies need to go farther and urgently take concrete steps toward reaching their public targets.”

Food Emissions 50 is an investor-led initiative accelerating progress towards a net-zero future in the food sector.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do here at GoDaddy.

I didn’t start my career in IT until I was 22 (I’m 35 now). I gained interest in tech whilst on tour with the United Nations in Cyprus, where I completed IT courses during my downtime. When I arrived back in the United Kingdom, I started night college, studying for my Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and working full time in a retail shop as well as having IT internship in a local warehouse. I applied for a Customer Technical Support position at a British domain registrar and web hosting company and was hired on full-time. I quickly moved up the management ladder to become a Team Manager within the organization. During my time there, I was studying Computer Science at the Open University and moved to the IT team to gain experience along with my degree. GoDaddy purchased the group in 2017 and I’ve continued my path, moving to the Engineering team to become a Site Reliability Engineer III. I specialise in the Windows platform but enjoy getting involved in anything that comes my way!

What real-life problems does your team solve?

We are a proactive team that look for solutions and improvements for our internal Windows, Android and Apple users. We manage devices via Intune, Jamf and Configuration Manager, providing the users with the tools they need to support our customers, whilst ensuring their devices are healthy and secure. We strive to prevent fires rather than fight them.

What has been one of your proudest moments at the organization?

I have many proud moments working at GoDaddy, including enabling employees to continue to work safely during the Pandemic and traveling throughout Europe supporting the reopening of offices after Covid lockdowns. However, my proudest moment was designing a new MDM solution to allow developers to test customer applications via physical phones connected to secure endpoints. This had an awful lot of restraints and barriers, including the technology not being readily available. With perseverance and research, I was able to connect various applications together to create the system we needed to suit our environment. Not only did this improve the situation for our employees, but GoDaddy customers will also benefit from our teams having better tools and resources!

If you had to describe GoDaddy’s culture in one word, what would it be and why?

Diverse.

I’m proud to be part of a company that has staff all over the world. I’ve had the privilege to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds, either remotely or face to face. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job for me and GoDaddy is amazing at celebrating our diversity, breaking down barriers and supporting all its staff members at work and home. I’ve had the pleasure to work with French, German, Serbian, Bulgarian, Romanian, American, Australian, Indian, and Colombian staff members. Some of these individuals I even call my close friends.

I’ve never worked within a company that looks after its staff members quite like GoDaddy. The organisation is phenomenal when it comes to recognition, benefits, and management.

What advice would you give to an individual looking to join GoDaddy?

Hurry up….I joke. But seriously, if you enjoy pushing yourself, working hard but playing harder, going beyond what you thought was your potential and are looking for a company with a great culture and atmosphere, you NEED to apply.

How do you recharge after a busy week?

I have 3 children (ages 7, 4 and 2-months), So, I’m not sure fully recharging is possible at the moment! However, I enjoy making memories with the kids, be that a day at the beach, jumping in the pool, or just reading them books in the evenings. For a bit of an escape, I run a Gran Turismo league with my friends and I enjoy drinking a pint at the local pub.

WHEREVER WE WORK, WE EMBRACE FLEXIBILITY

Work at SAIC prioritizes flexibility, inclusion and well-being: We empower our employees to own their work experiences.

SAIC fosters a flexible environment by offering schedule options that include alternate work schedules along with increasing remote and hybrid work environments. Our definition of flexibility is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Putting our customers and their business needs first, our employees and their leaders work together to develop schedules to ensure work is done well while contributing to the employee’s well-being.

Employee flexibility also helps us attract a wider talent pool and retain highly skilled people in extremely sought-after disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and cybersecurity.

The flexibility for individuals to choose a four-day workweek or a hybrid or remote work schedule helps lessen our impact on the planet too. By having fewer employees working in offices, we have been able to reduce our leased space, which leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions and paper use. Reducing or eliminating employee commutes helps our reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well.

Attracting, Developing and Nurturing Our People

To drive employee engagement and retention, we work to create an inclusive workforce culture throughout the talent lifecycle that develops the critical skills of our employees. When we need to hire externally, we design our efforts to attract highly skilled and exceptional talent. Employee referrals often result in some of our best performing new hires. In FY24, 32% of the approximately 5,900 new employees hired came from an employee referral. We are an industry leader in the retention of our employees, consistently decreasing voluntary attrition as a percentage of employees.

Through technical and professional skills training, leadership development programs, higher education programs and tuition assistance programs for continuing education or industry certification, we invest in developing and upskilling our people. In FY24, our employees completed approximately 155,000 hours of training, or nearly six and a half hours per employee. This time included over 9,100 hours of leadership development.

“It’s a great career to have,” said Choate. “You are going to work hard, but in the end it will all pay off. We are paid well, and it’s a good work environment.”

Choate and his fiancée have three children. He appreciates the work-life balance that his job provides. He is home every night to spend time with his family, who are very proud of his accomplishments as a driver.

Choate is also an active million-mile driver, a recognition by Marathon Petroleum of drivers who have driven one million miles or more without a preventable accident.

Marathon Petroleum has had a driver on the NPTC National Driver All-Star list for the past 15 years.
