I refreshed my resume and emailed it on my lunch break in same day.

A Logistics supervisor and group lead were conducting interviews at the coffee shop where I worked. After multiple no-shows for interviews, I walked over to their table to check if they needed anything else. I asked them where they worked and what they were looking for in a candidate.

They worked with Quest Diagnostics, and they were looking for a driver. At the time, I didn’t know anything about what Quest was or what they did, and I asked for more details. After learning what the position entailed, I asked for his business card and email address so I could send him my resume. I had previously worked as a contractor for a pharmacy, delivering large orders to rehab and nursing home facilities, and thought I might meet the qualifications for that position.

He didn’t think I was serious – but I was. I had my interview in Shreveport about 3 weeks later, and the rest just fell into place after that.

When I joined Quest, I literally doubled my salary with a shift differential and benefits I would have never considered an option for someone in an entry-level position.

I’m a high school drop-out with a GED. Without the Employee Education Assistance program that Quest offers, I would never have considered furthering my education. Because of Quest’s program and my incredibly encouraging supervisor, I finished my Associate Degree in Arts in Information Technology with honors.

My supervisor is one of the most compassionate and understanding leaders I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. He encouraged me to pursue my education, has helped me gain more knowledge and experience in the Logistics department, and offers the same to all of his team. He pushes us to achieve great things and to use our potential the best way possible, and he’s never shy about showing how much he appreciates our hard work and efforts.

When I’m not covering a route in my service area of East Texas and North Louisiana, I’m helping my Group Leads and Supervisor with various tasks in our office or finding new ways to streamline things for the drivers in our hub.

Being on the road always feels like a bigger impact because I get to interact with our clients, but completing our specimen pack-out and ensuring supplies are readily available for our drivers is just as important.

LONDON, October 10, 2024 /3BL/ – Federal Express Corporation, the world’s largest express transportation company, announces its transition to using biofuels in linehaul trucks at three UK sites as of this month.

More than 170 trucks – all tractor-trailer combinations – will now refuel with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) across FedEx locations in Parkhouse (80 tractors), Marston Gate (54 tractors), and Atherstone (38 tractors). Thanks to a two-year agreement with supplier, Crown Oil, FedEx has secured the purchase of at least four million litres of the fuel annually.

The change to HVO will deliver certified lifecycle carbon emissions savings of at least 80% compared to diesel and offers one way of reducing the emissions of operating a network of heavy goods vehicles. FedEx Express began using 100% HVO fuel as a direct replacement, or ‘drop-in’ alternative, to diesel, in UK operations in October 2023. This earlier trial, along with a similar pilot in the Netherlands, allowed FedEx to evaluate the practicalities of refuelling with alternative fuels and highlighted HVO as a preferred route to help FedEx transition from diesel to biofuels in its European road network.

“FedEx operates an expansive road network across the region. We’re excited to share that the UK is the first country where we’re able to scale the use of HVO in our operations, in what we hope will be a permanent operational change. We’ve been trialling our use of this fuel for eight months already and with this purchase agreement we’re increasing our consumption sufficiently for our fleet to drive approximately 36,000 miles each week on alternative fuel. This decision is another step towards our long-term goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2040,”said James Richards, Senior Manager Road Network Operations UK, FedEx.

As well as helping to reduce the emissions of linehaul trucks, HVO can also be used in place of diesel in select pieces of ground service equipment. Under this agreement, 16 tugs – used at the same three sites to reposition accompanying trailers – will begin routine use of HVO as a drop-in fuel. While some pieces of ground service equipment are already commonly procured as battery electric, HVO offers favourable alternative to diesel where electrification of certain ground service equipment may not yet be practical.

At Expedia Group, we believe travel is a force for good. We are committed to ensuring access for all travelers because it serves as a gateway to the world, allowing us to connect with others, share our experiences, and broaden our horizons. Travel should be enabled, encouraged and championed, but we know everyone does not have the same access to experience these opportunities.

As part of our commitment to fostering a more inclusive travel community, we’ve launched Journeys for All: An Expedia Group Study on Inclusion in Travel. This first-of-its-kind report provides the industry with essential data and key recommendations to better serve underrepresented travelers.

For us, it’s important that everyone can access and feel safe and empowered while traveling. We wanted to explore what those different experiences look like based on individual identities.

Aditi Mohapatra – VP, Global Social Impact & Sustainability

These underserved travelers are individuals or groups who face significant barriers to accessing products or services due to a variety of factors including race, ethnicity, gender and sexual identity, disability, economic status, and geographic location. These barriers often intersect and can result from systemic inequalities, discriminatory practices, economic constraints, and insufficient or inadequately designed infrastructure.

Although underserved travelers are already exploring the world, the travel industry must recognize the immense potential in enabling more inclusive travel experiences. By addressing the barriers that hinder many from fully participating in travel, the industry can unlock a wealth of opportunities — not only in enhancing their journeys but also in expanding the traveler base.

This original research seeks to identify shared travel challenges of underserved groups, including Black, Latino, LGBTQIA+, and travelers with disabilities. By examining the planning and experience of their journeys, we’ve identified persistent pain points that need immediate attention and action. We’ve also included recommendations for how to address those pain points, based directly on these firsthand insights. What we learn in this study invites us as an industry to create more inclusive travel experiences together.

This study demonstrates what we’ve long known to be true: embedding inclusive practices across our products and services does more than enhance brand appeal and loyalty. It creates significant growth opportunities by meeting the needs of more travelers.

Greg Schulze – Chief Commercial Officer and President, Travel Partnerships and Media

The principles outlined in this report are a starting point to provide data-informed guidance for the industry to work together in providing a universally welcoming travel experience. To create meaningful and sustainable change that improves experiences for all travelers requires a collective effort from all corners of the travel industry. This intersectional study, with firsthand insights and actionable recommendations, invites the industry as a whole to address these barriers so more people can experience more joy in travel.

Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) has committed $100,000 to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief for Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Helene is the second-deadliest mainland US Hurricane in the past 50 years behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005, claiming more than 200 lives to date with hundreds of people still reported missing.

The American Red Cross is mobilizing truckloads of cots, blankets, and comfort kits, and providing food, medicine, and shelter. Over 32 million people and 12 million households have been impacted, with 15% of those impacted living below the poverty level.

“It is devastating to see so much of our country impacted by Hurricane Helene. Our hearts and thoughts are with all those who have lost their homes, livelihoods and communities,” said Rockwell’s Ashley Johnson, manager, Community Relations. “We lean on our longstanding relationship with the Red Cross and support their front-line efforts to help so many who are in need.”

By investing in our manufacturing operations, innovating with our customers, and collaborating across the value chain, we can help move the needle on decarbonization in our industry and contribute to a more sustainable future for everyone.

Transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires us all to move beyond business as usual. But for many businesses, the challenge is answering: How do you translate climate commitments into actions that contribute to a cleaner, more resilient world?

At Climate Week NYC, senior leaders from business, government and civil society gather to discuss how to accelerate decarbonization. Especially in hard-to-abate industries, businesses are looking for practical, scalable solutions that contribute to economy-wide decarbonization and create a path to growth.

At Dow, we believe we can decarbonize and create business value at the same time. We embrace our responsibility to help protect the climate by reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while also supporting healthy watersheds and ecosystems. To help us reach these targets, we are taking climate action through investments, innovation and collaboration.

Our decarbonization roadmap includes investing in scalable, innovative technologies and processes that will reduce GHG emissions from our operations, increase production and contribute to decarbonizing our industry.

At our Fort Saskatchewan manufacturing site in Alberta, Canada, we are building the world’s first net-zero-emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site with respect to Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. The project will use emissions-reducing technology such as clean, circular hydrogen and carbon capture and storage to decarbonize approximately 20% of our global ethylene capacity while increasing our polyethylene capacity by 2 million metric tons annually.

This Path2Zero project is part of our plan to decarbonize our manufacturing facilities while growing capacity and delivering products with lower carbon footprints to meet customer demand. Already, we have reduced GHG emissions by 15% between 2005-2020. Today, our actions, including this Fort Saskatchewan investment, have us on track to reduce our net annual scopes 1 and 2 emissions an additional 5 million metric tons annually (~15%) by 2030 from our 2020 baseline.

The transition to a low-carbon economy is a game-changer. We know that we can’t grow without decarbonizing, and we can’t decarbonize without growing. By investing in our manufacturing operations, innovating with our customers, and collaborating across the value chain, we can help move the needle on decarbonization in our industry and contribute to a more sustainable future for everyone.
