The importance of creating opportunity

Despite reported skills gaps, there is no shortage of talented, smart, and eager candidates to fill IT roles. Many just need the chance to gain the right training to build relevant skills for the industry. IBM’s SkillsBuild creates this opportunity by being accessible — it’s free and digital — and through partnerships such as HHF, which encourages its members to gain IT certifications through the platform.

“It’s creating direct pathways to tech jobs. Certifications go a long way when you are looking for a job — that’s the obvious way — but it also goes a long way to giving you confidence that you belong in this industry, and that gets left out a lot,” says Tijerino.

Tijerno says that it was also important to the HHF that the courses offered through the SkillsBuild platform were accessible to a range of professionals, as well as students.

“We wanted to provide these opportunities and trainings for our community to make an impact and we’re really grateful to IBM for allowing us to leverage their expertise and pathways in preparing our community for these jobs that America desperately needs to fill, and Latinos have always been ready to do it,” says Tijerino.

PSEG Energize!

Dreary gray skies, misty rain showers, mud-caked boots and August’s suffocating summer heat wasn’t enough to stop our volunteers from choosing to spend their Friday morning at America’s-Grow-a-Row fields collecting 51,600 servings (12,900lbs) of fresh and healthy produce for families in need.

The conditions were less than ideal but the scene was filled with laughter, wholesome conversations and friendly banter as employees filled harvest buckets with everything from plump purple eggplants to  juicy Jersey tomatoes.

“We’re always thankful and excited to get out into the field and meet new volunteers. But whenever we see PSE&G on the calendar, we get especially excited,” said a Grow-a-Row staff member. “The level of dedication and joy you all bring is infectious.”

America’s Grow-a-Row is a nonprofit organization with 423 acres across four farm locations. Not only do they grow around 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables at their farms each season, but they also “glean” or rescue “not quite retail-perfect” produce from grocery stores and other farms to donate to feeding organizations across the nation. Additionally, they hope to educate the community about the value of eating healthy and how to help families facing food insecurity, including some of their very own volunteers.

“At a previous event, we had one volunteer in particular who is a mother and was actually one of the recipients of the produce we collect. After collecting, she became emotional and said, ‘I can’t believe how hard these people work for us and they don’t even know me or my family.’ I say this to show what we do together can positively affect lives, and I can’t thank you enough for being a part of it,” said another Grow-a-Row staff member.

With more than 10,000 volunteers each year harvesting on the farm, America’s Grow-a-Row shares our PSEG Foundation’s value of environmental sustainability. We’re thankful for organizations like America’s Grow-a-Row for being a force of positive change to our communities.

BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 25, 2024 /3BL/ — T-Mobile announced the expansion of its 5G service across 11 rural California county fairgrounds, along with the introduction of open Wi-Fi access in the fairgrounds’ administration buildings. This initiative is designed to support public safety agencies, as well as federal, state, and local officials, by providing reliable connectivity for incident command posts and central emergency hubs during natural disasters, ensuring seamless communication for emergency responders. This move aligns with T-Mobile’s commitment to the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) to keep rural Californians connected in times of emergency and to support other uses throughout the year, including for digital literacy training and economic development.

California is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, with governors declaring over 100 such events since 2015. And, as of September 2024, California has experienced 46 weather and climate disasters since 1980 that have each caused over $1 billion in losses. Given this reality, T-Mobile’s network enhancements are a proactive step to address critical needs for public safety and first responders in rural areas during emergencies such as fires, floods and earthquakes, which often require massive emergency responses in rural and remote areas. The county fairgrounds will serve as emergency hubs, ensuring that first responders and impacted members of the public have quick access to a secure Wi-Fi network. In addition to providing support during emergencies, T-Mobile’s leading 5G network will also enable digital literacy learning, economic development activities and support other community events at the fairgrounds’ administration buildings during non-emergency periods.

“At T-Mobile, we recognize that connectivity is crucial for saving lives in times of crisis. By expanding our 5G network to cover 11 California rural county fairground command centers, we’re providing first responders and local officials with a literal lifeline when they need it most,” said Callie Field, President, T-Mobile Business Group. “This enhancement underscores our commitment to public safety and our dedication to ensuring that communities are prepared for whatever challenges come their way.”

“For more than a decade, the California Emerging Technology Fund has prioritized fairgrounds as essential anchor institutions for connection to high-speed internet,” said Sunne Wright McPeak, CETF President and CEO. “We are grateful to T-Mobile for meeting their commitment to connect 10 rural county fairgrounds with 5G service, with the voluntary addition of one other. Their action ensures that first responders and the public have access to internet service during disasters and emergencies, as well for other uses that can help close the digital divide and support economic development.”

Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Karen Ross applauded the 5G deployment of infrastructure to the 11 fairgrounds saying, “CDFA welcomes these new assets to help California’s first responders prepare for and respond to emergencies, as well as to provide those communities with these resources to use for other activities throughout the year. We express our gratitude to T-Mobile and CETF for providing this public benefit.”

The 11 fairgrounds are:

Calaveras County – Angels Camp

Glenn County – Orland

Imperial Valley – Imperial

Lake County – Lakeport

The National Orange Show – San Bernardino

Nevada County – Grass Valley

Redwood Empire – Ukiah

San Benito – Tres Pinos

Sonoma County – Santa Rosa

Yuba-Sutter – Yuba City

Yolo County – Woodland

Five-year agreement builds on significant company investments in improving the well-being of cocoa farming communities

HERSHEY, Pa., October 25, 2024 /3BL/ – Hershey announced a five-year agreement with nine cocoa-producing cooperatives in Côte d’Ivoire. The move is part of its “Cocoa For Good” strategy, a 10-year, $500 million investment launched in 2018 by the company to address the complex challenges facing cocoa farmers. The agreement aims to build lasting relationships with farmers that enable a more resilient supply.

A long-term commitment to improve farmer livelihoods

The announcement coincided with the annual National Cocoa and Chocolate Days held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The heart of the agreement is a memorandum of understanding between Hershey, Sucden, and the nine cooperatives which aims to:

Partner with farmers to professionalize cocoa farming and improve their profitabilityInvests in community-based resources that improve household wellbeingPreserve the environment and strengthen farm resilience

Long-term collaboration among the three entities provides stability for farmers and an ability to more directly engage in addressing on-the-farm challenges.

“Improving farmer incomes requires a holistic approach and collaboration across public and private sectors,” said Tricia Brannigan, Vice President, Chief Procurement Officer for Hershey. “Collaboration happens best when you have trust. Trust is built over time through strong, long-lasting relationships.”

Building resilient communities within cocoa supply chains

This agreement aligns with Côte d’Ivoire’s National Strategy for Sustainable Cocoa to ensure a coordinated and lasting approach to addressing key challenges in the Ivorian cocoa sector.

This latest move by Hershey is part of a series of significant investments in the well-being of cocoa farming communities. In addition to its $500 million “Cocoa for Good” investment, Hershey launched its $40 million Income Accelerator program in 2023. It is also funding the construction of primary schools in farming communities, through an agreement with the National Oversight Committee for Actions to Fight Child Labor, Trafficking and Exploitation and the International Cocoa Initiative.

In The Wild Robot, Roz is a resourceful robot that embodies resilience and the drive to protect the natural world, always completing her tasks with a deep sense of purpose. Similarly, the cast and filmmakers behind the film were committed to making a positive impact in real life.

As part of the film’s release, Universal Pictures collaborated with Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o to create an in-theater PSA, encouraging audiences to learn from Roz and take small, meaningful steps to care for our communities and environment.

The film’s powerful themes of kindness, adaptation, resilience, and the protection of nature and wildlife created a perfect opportunity to spark conversations around sustainability and inspire positive behavior change.

During Climate Week NYC, NBCUniversal hosted a special screening of The Wild Robot at the first-ever Climate Film Festival. The event included a Q&A with producer Jeff Hermann and the Natural Resources Defense Council, offering insights into the film’s environmental themes.
