LONDON, November 8, 2024 /3BL/ – Benevity Inc., the trusted global corporate social responsibility solution provider, today unveiled new insights into the UK corporate social responsibility (CSR) landscape with data showing UK companies’ commitment to social impact initiatives at an all-time high and increasing at a greater pace than the global average. The findings were showcased at Benevity Forum London, the premier event bringing together purpose-driven companies from the UK and Europe to exchange best practices for impactful volunteering, giving and sustainability programmes.

Benevity’s annual The State of Corporate Purpose report highlights the top CSR, DEI and ESG trends shaping corporate social impact strategies today. Drawing on data and insights from Benevity’s global community of nearly 1,000 leading companies and a survey of over 400 CSR leaders, the 2024 global report from Benevity Impact Labs, the company’s research lab, shows that companies are increasingly realigning their CSR strategies to their core business values and focusing on creating positive return on investment for both their businesses and communities.

At the Forum, Benevity shared new analysis from the findings that highlights how UK corporate social impact reached record heights in 2023. Overall employee participation in volunteering and giving programs in the UK rose to 14% — a 25% increase from the previous year, outpacing the global rise of 23%. This surge was largely driven by more than 300% growth in the employee volunteering participation rate compared to the previous year – the highest percentage increase across all regions. Through Benevity’s platform, employees in the UK directed £31 million to support nearly 13,000 nonprofits.

Benevity’s market-leading Enterprise Impact Platform offers integrated capabilities across community investment, employee giving, volunteering, employee resource groups (ERGs) and impact reporting, empowering organisations worldwide to become a force for good and transform social impact into business impact.

“Businesses have a unique ability to drive social change by engaging employees in their efforts. These findings underscore the growing commitment of UK leaders to investing in social impact initiatives, proving just how critical they are to business success. As social impact programmes mature, UK leaders are increasingly embracing an enterprise-wide impact mindset to meet the growing expectations for businesses to contribute positively to the world.”

Key Trends Reshaping UK Corporate Purpose:

Companies move courageously forward – but with more caution: While companies grapple with when and how to address potentially divisive social issues, 87% of UK impact leaders say corporations should be courageous and willing to take a stand, while 78% say they should be more cautious about the issues they choose to support. Support for caution, however, is growing three times faster than courage.ERGs are becoming business critical: Employee resource groups (ERGs) are increasingly taking on an integral role in companies today, being consulted by departments like HR, communications and marketing, where they bring perspectives on the needs of diverse communities and influence social impact strategies, funding and decision-making. 98% of UK companies affirm ERGs’ importance in unifying employees during times of crisis. 61% of UK companies are increasing ERG budgets, recognizing their expanding role in helping companies become more diverse, inclusive and equitable, while also helping build better businesses.Volunteering propels forward: Volunteering has recently gained momentum as a critical tool to build culture and employee engagement in the now-normal hybrid work world. The data shows, however, that 63% of UK companies are evolving their volunteer programs further, investing in ways to forge stronger employee connections and drive deeper social impact through skills-based volunteering and nonprofit board service programmes.Cautious optimism for AI: Following a year of explosive growth in the adoption of AI, companies are now striving to harness AI’s power in ways that address social issues while mitigating a potential divide. While 67% of UK companies are concerned about the potential impacts of AI, 87% express optimism about AI’s potential to transform philanthropy.Outcomes-based philanthropy is on the rise: Businesses are increasingly being asked to demonstrate value and return on investment of their CSR programs. With 59% of UK companies expecting to boost their investments in impact reporting, CSR budgets are most likely to prioritise advances in impact data, measurement, and reporting in the coming year.

Covia’s diverse product range supports a wide variety of everyday applications. We pride ourselves on providing high-performing, innovative products to our customers in the foundry, building products, ceramics, coatings and polymers, water filtration, glass, and sports and recreation markets. We grow our business in these markets by extending the applications for our existing products as well as developing new products and new markets to spur Covia’s growth.

The sustainability-related aspects of developing, producing, delivering, and using our products are an increasingly important part of our product innovation process. A key component of our research and development process is to partner with our customers. This enables us to understand their needs for products and solutions that offer sustainability benefits to their business and end-use applications. Through small batch testing and trials, we work together to fine-tune overall product performance and sustainability attributes. To complement this process and anticipate future needs, we conduct extensive market and trends research to guide our ongoing investments in R&D.

We are currently establishing a state-of-the-art Innovation Center in Concord, North Carolina. The Concord facility will become an integral part of our network of laboratories. The new center will include significant laboratory space, along with office space for our technology team. Adding this lab will allow us to further our development of products serving the following key areas: polymers, engineered stones, coatings, and building products.

ESG considerations are integrated into Covia’s product portfolio decision-making. Our product scorecard evaluates a variety of factors, including technical feasibility, economic interest, and ESG factors. ESG considerations played a pivotal role in our product development success in 2023, notably the development of Cristobalex™.

Cristobalex™, with its refined quality and low iron content, allows specific end-products to be more durable, reflective, and UV-resistant, all while being significantly lighter in weight, resulting in a variety of ESG-related benefits. Various applications include cool roofing, reflective road markings, architectural coatings, sealants, and adhesives.

For example, the addition of this ingredient to cool roofing coatings makes them bright and reflective, resulting in reduced energy consumption compared to other buildings. Additionally, the reflectivity and UV-resistant properties in painted road markings create a safer environment, as proper markers and indicators become more visible and durable.

It continues to be a challenge to get women the visibility and recognition they deserve for their contributions in agriculture. Case IH, a brand of CNH, is committed to promoting women’s leadership roles in the industry.

Romina Bruno is a business administrator and a rural woman who found appreciation for the countryside from her father.

“He is a doctor. He was born in Jovita, Córdoba. In 1994, he bought the field as an investment and rented it. Over the years he acquired animals, and in 2004, when I finished my studies, he proposed that I take over the administration. The original idea was to come and go, but I stayed. I have had people by my side who have taught me, accompanied me, trusted me and put everything on the line for this dream,” Romina explained.

In the family field south of Córdoba, Romina and her team, including her sisters, are dedicated to livestock and agriculture, working direct seeding with rotations of soybeans, corn and wheat with cover crops, such as vetches, rye and oats. To carry out these activities, they have a Puma 150 tractor and a Case IH Axial-Flow 5130 combine:

“My favorite time of the year is when I get on the machine and allow myself to live the minute by minute of the lots. I think it’s the best combine on the market. Its Axial system puts it above the competition. Technology and quality of harvesting hand in hand with comfort and ease of use”, said Romina.

With 20 years of experience in the market, Romina is in charge of administration and management, defining the company’s guidelines and strategies, organizing the purchase of supplies, among other tasks. But in addition, in her daily life, she has seen herself putting reels, herding cows, assisting in births, when she is not on the combine or changing points on the platform.

When asked about female inclusion in the world of agriculture, Romina said that “we have made a lot of progress. I think that old dogmas are being broken where it was thought that the countryside was “a man’s thing”. Women in agriculture are gaining more visibility: more and more of us are working in managerial and leadership positions.”

Advising young rural women who are starting their journey, Romina stressed that “the best advice is that there are no limits. The desire and desire to improve are the only limits we should set ourselves. Everything is possible as long as there is talent, effort and commitment. As long as we train ourselves in pursuit of continuous improvement and know how to empower ourselves. As women, we must continue to show the other side of rurality.”

November 7, 2024 /3BL/ – Lenovo, the global technology powerhouse, and technology non-profit Tech To The Rescue have partnered to provide a crucial gateway for nonprofits who are ready to embrace the power of AI (Artificial Intelligence) but lack a clear and accessible path to resources and training. The new Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab will be an essential component of Tech To The Rescue’s AI for Changemakers Accelerator Program, which is currently supported by AWS, Google.org, and other key partners. As a whole, the AI for Changemakers program aims to boost the impact of 110 innovative and impactful non-profits as they create AI solutions to enhance their work.

The Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab will support ten organizations as they create solutions focused on combatting climate change and creating access to education. The partnership is core to Lenovo’s Smarter AI for All strategy, and Lenovo’s philanthropic focus on leveraging AI as a solution to humanity’s most pressing issues. By partnering with and sharing access to its skilling curriculum, Lenovo hopes to build access, understanding, and capacity for non-profits’ digital transformation while taking on core issues like climate change, loss of biodiversity, and access to education.

“The Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab is more than just a tech boost,” shared Jacek Siadkowski, founder of Tech To The Rescue. “It brings strategic added value to Tech To The Rescue’s broader AI for Changemakers program. While the AI for Changemakers accelerator offers mentorship, strategy, and community support to help nonprofits integrate AI into their missions, the Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab ensures that selected organizations have the cutting-edge tools and resources needed to make that integration a reality.”

“After surveying non-profits around the world, we understand that non-profit leaders want to take advantage of AI but lack the resources and training to do so,” shared Calvin J. Crosslin, President of Lenovo Foundation and Lenovo VP and Chief Diversity Officer. “As businesses and industry readily embrace AI, we need to make sure that non-profits are included and equipped for the massive transformation that AI is creating. Giving access to Tech To The Rescue’s resources and curriculum is a great next step as we continue to share access and education to AI for non-profits, and we’re thrilled to support their AI for Changemakers initiative.”

You can learn more about Lenovo’s Smarter AI for All focus at Lenovo Tech World, taking place in-person and digitally in Bellevue, WA October 15, 2024.

Who

Mike Scott, Senior Community Development manager for the West District, based in New Orleans, Louisiana

What

Scott has been selected as recipient of the 2024 Tru-Impact Community Advocate Award by TruFund Financial Services. TruFund is a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides lending and technical assistance to create thriving and resilient small businesses and entrepreneurial ecosystems within underserved communities and among disadvantaged populations.

The Tru-Impact Community Advocate Award recognizes exceptional leadership in providing access to capital for underserved entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth and job creation in communities across the country.

Why

According to TruFund, Regions has been an exemplary partner to TruFund in their Southern Region supporting small businesses by providing access to capital, mentorship, and technical assistance. These efforts have played a crucial role in creating a more equitable small business environment.

The organization explained that Scott’s individual contributions have been instrumental in driving these efforts forward. “Your leadership, dedication, and hard work have profoundly impacted the lives of many entrepreneurs and underserved communities. The innovative solutions you have championed address the pressing need for access to capital and inspire others in the field to pursue similar transformative initiatives. Your dedication and innovative approach have empowered numerous entrepreneurs and significantly contributed to the economic vitality of communities in need.”

In his own words

“In my 17 years as Community Development manager at Regions, I have been part of a team doing extremely important work in the city of New Orleans. We have established long-term community partnerships with a host of organizations that are working to positively impact the community.

Specifically, we have collaborated with organizations developing affordable housing and stabilizing underserved neighborhoods. And we have supported job training, workforce development, educational and youth development programs throughout the city. And, importantly, we have supported programs that help small business owners – assisting them in growing their businesses and creating jobs.

Receiving the Tru-Impact Community Advocate Award is especially meaningful to me because small businesses are so vital to the health of our communities. Supporting small businesses in underserved communities fosters economic growth, creates local jobs, revitalizes neighborhoods, provides access to essential goods and services, and empowers community members. Small businesses are a primary source of new jobs in these communities, offering employment opportunities that might not exist otherwise, especially for residents with limited access to other employment options. When small businesses thrive in underserved areas, it can lead to increased investment, property value appreciation, and overall economic development within the neighborhood.

I’m very proud of the work we’ve done in this area, and I’m truly humbled and honored to be recognized by TruFund – a valuable community partner to Regions.”

Southwire’s ongoing collaboration with utility provider Georgia Power has led to a federal funding grant to enhance the electrical Grid throughout the state of Georgia, including the installation Southwire’s C7® Overhead Conductor. Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern Company and serves 2.7 million customers across Georgia.

Georgia Power, a longstanding customer of Southwire, has received a grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) as a part of the Grid Resilience Innovation Partnership (GRIP) program. The $160 million grant will serve as an investment in grid enhancement in the state of Georgia.

Funding from the GRIP program is allocated for enhancing grid capabilities with advanced conductors, addressing the need within the electrical industry to expand transmission through utilizing advanced technology in existing pathways. Southwire’s aluminum-conductor composite-supported (ACCS) technology is the perfect fit for a cost-effective strategy to supply power via existing infrastructure.

“Thanks to this grant, Southwire’s technology will be used to bring resolutions to the ongoing industry need for expansion of transmission here in our home state of Georgia,” said Norman Adkins, Southwire’s chief operating officer. “We are proud to work with our industry colleagues at Georgia Power as we bring this investment to life.”

Southwire is not only responsible for the ACCS technology and C7® product that will be used in this project. The company also endorsed Georgia Power’s application to the DOE, signaling a collaboration with the utility provider with the potential to inspire future similar partnerships among peers to continue this innovation.

“We know our customers depend on us to make the investments needed in the state’s power grid to ensure that we provide the energy resilience and reliability they value and expect, while keeping energy prices affordable,” said Fran Forehand, senior vice president of Transmission for Georgia Power. “Leveraging federal funding and working with the DOE to integrate innovative technology is a great example of how we do this. Thanks to the robust and long-term planning process we have in place with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), the investments we’re making in a smarter and more resilient power grid are showing value for our customers during extreme weather events such as Hurricane Helene, and every day.”

Almost two years ago, my husband was looking at job alert emails that were sent to him. He drives a truck and had already transitioned to a different role, but he saw the Quest Logistics opening and thought that it would be a great fit for me.

At that time, I was working in corrections for many years and wanted to try something different. Sometimes you can feel stuck in one area, and I was ready to make a change. The rest is history.

What I love most about this role is the independence. When you spend years where all you see are walls and bars every day, being in the open air is freeing.

I know how important the job is for patients, and I’m excited to work with people who are professional and knowledgeable. I’m responsible for my route and take the time to try to do my best every day. Our Logistics team is helping behind the scenes, and I’ve learned how important we are in patient care.

I enjoy the fact that there are so many opportunities and great people at Quest. There are people I work with who have been here so long and share their knowledge. There’s a security here that I could call anyone, at any time, and they would help me. I found all those things at Quest.

I drive between two hubs—Longview, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana—and I help coordinate potlucks at each location. I like making Southern comfort food. Cooking is one of my love languages, and I get to share that with the wonderful people I work with.

Cummins

COLUMBUS, Ind. /3BL/ – Global power technology leader Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) proudly announced the extension of its grant to The 15 White Coats, aimed at amplifying the impact of the Resilient Readers Book Club and launching new Virtual Readers Club volunteer opportunities.

Since 2023, Cummins has partnered with The 15 White Coats through its Cummins Advocating for Racial Equity (CARE) initiative. This collaboration has provided culturally relevant literature to school-age children, featuring high-quality culturally relevant books placed in youth-centered organizations to inspire future generations.

“We embarked on a journey to try to enact a vision from our community partners to create the Resilient Readers Book Club,” said Brian Mormino, Cummins Executive Director – Technical & Environmental Systems. “Our goal is to promote social justice by providing children with age-appropriate, high-quality Black literature, which is often hard to find. Cummins employees piloted this program in the Martindale-Brightwood area of Indianapolis, and after a successful year, we are ready to expand. Now, anyone, including Cummins employees, can join the Book Club by sending a book box to a classroom, local organization, or family anywhere in the US. It’s inspiring to see this idea grow and make a significant impact, driving generational and societal change. I am grateful for partnerships with organizations that share our vision, innovation, and determination to make a difference.”

Founded in 2019, The 15 White Coats is an internationally recognized non-profit dedicated to diversifying medicine through mentorship, literacy accessibility, and economic assistance. The organization gained prominence with an internationally viral photo of 15 African American medical students from Tulane School of Medicine posing in front of plantation slave quarters, symbolizing resilience and aspiration. Since then, they have awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to more than 2,000 students in healthcare fields.

Literacy is crucial for success, yet only half of U.S. adults are proficient readers. The statistics are even more alarming in Indiana, where only 33% of fourth graders read at or above a proficient level, with Black students disproportionately affected and highlight the enduring educational inequities rooted in systemic racism. Addressing these disparities with culturally relevant books is essential for educational equity.

“This partnership embodies our mission to inspire and equip the next generation with the tools they need to succeed. Access to diverse literature is a pivotal part of this journey,” said Dr. Russell Ledet, President and Co-Founder of The 15 White Coats.

Cummins has a longstanding commitment to social justice, community service, and upholding its core values of diversity and inclusion. Through CARE, Cummins is dedicated to enhancing the communities where it operates, directly benefiting its employees and neighbors.

In October 2020, Cummins launched CARE to lead efforts in dismantling systemic discrimination against the Black community in the U.S. CARE leverages Cummins’ resources—its people, financial strength, and philanthropic efforts—to drive racial equity and combat the impacts of racism on its employees, communities, and the economy.

This partnership aims to provide children and families with engaging books, empowering stories, and meaningful community interactions. Together, Cummins and The 15 White Coats aspire to cultivate a love for reading, a strong sense of self, and promising future aspirations.
