Green Marine overview

Incorporated in May 2024, Green Marine International is the governance structure overseeing Green Marine and Green Marine Europe certification programs. Founded in 2007, Green Marine is the result of a voluntary effort by the shipping industry in North America to go beyond regulations. The Montclair State University Foundation has been awarded a two-year, $1 million grant from the Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) Foundation to further develop and expand the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies’ annual Green Teams internship program that serves communities and builds career success for undergraduate students. As the Green Teams celebrates its 10-year anniversary, this funding will enhance the program’s ability to tackle environmental and climate challenges in New Jersey.

Since its inception, the Green Teams program has served as a platform for students to gain internships, green jobs and entry into graduate programs. Community partners host teams of undergraduate students, who conduct sustainability research, collect and analyze environmental and economic data, and make recommendations to help shift corporate and organizational culture toward sustainability.

To date, 420 students from across the country have completed over 350 real-world projects supporting 53 local communities, nonprofits, and both national and global companies in advancing their sustainability goals.

A Focus on Supporting Overburdened Communities and Organizations

One of the core objectives of the grant is to provide Green Team interns to New Jersey municipalities and nonprofit organizations that lack the resources to fund their own sustainability projects. These projects focus on promoting and achieving environmental justice. Funding will cover intern stipends, travel expenses for site visits and field trips, and advanced training by expert personnel. Outcomes from the community work the Green Teams have completed so far have informed and empowered communities to address flooding, food security, waste and other environmental issues.

Expanding Technology and Training

The grant will also support advanced technology and expertise to support the growing complexity of the sustainability projects, including empowering students with Geographic Information System (GIS), drone (UAV) and virtual reality (VR/XR) technologies.

Additionally, the program will expand the training of interns in professional communications and survey methods and will help strengthen partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and community colleges.

“As the Green Teams program marks its 10th anniversary, we’re excited to support the next phase of its growth. This partnership with Montclair State University strengthens our shared commitment to sustainability, while ensuring the benefits help reach New Jersey’s most underserved communities,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., President of the PSEG Foundation and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility. “The Green Teams program exemplifies the kind of innovative, hands-on experience that prepares students to tackle today’s most pressing environmental challenges. About the Green Teams Program

The Green Teams internship program assembles diverse teams of undergraduate students from a variety of academic majors, introducing them to subject-matter experts, professors and leaders addressing the world’s most difficult challenges. The teams have collaborated on a range of critical issues including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, addressing food insecurity, mitigating flood risks and assessing the environmental risk from artificial turf.

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21, 2024 /3BL/ – The biotech and pharma industry plays a pivotal role in advancing global health, but as a significant contributor to climate change, its environmental footprint cannot be ignored. My Green Lab’s 2024 Carbon Impact of Biotech & Pharma Report highlights progress while calling for deeper systemic changes as the industry approaches a pivotal moment in its sustainability journey.

The report, produced by My Green Lab with contribution from Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), indicates that the industry has reached a tipping point—with over 25% of companies setting medium-term Scope 1 and 2 targets aligned with a 1.5°C pathway. Despite significant progress, the report finds that long-term progress to reach a zero-carbon future hinges on targets expanding to include Scope 3, the indirect emissions from upstream and downstream of a company’s value chain.

“The progress the biotech and pharma industry has made demonstrates the power of collective action, but our work is far from complete. Achieving long-term climate goals requires a united focus on addressing Scope 3 emissions,” said James Connelly, CEO of My Green Lab. “By working together to decarbonize supply chains and embrace innovative solutions, we can ensure this sector leads the charge toward a healthier, more sustainable future.”

This year’s study builds on previous reports starting in 2021, which were the first to assess the entire biotech and pharma value chain by quantifying Scope 3 emissions. The 2024 study leverages data from 638 publicly listed companies and 290 privately held companies. Tracking emissions since 2015, the report offers a comprehensive overview of the industry’s carbon footprint and its alignment with the Paris Climate Agreement. The study highlights more companies adopting the UN Race to Zero and a majority making progress on the Breakthrough Outcome by adopting My Green Lab Certification.

Key Findings and Industry Progress

The 2024 report reveals a concerning emissions footprint across the biotech and pharma industry, with a combined total of 397 million tCO₂e from private and public companies in 2023. Among the 149 companies with high-quality emissions data, 31% have set medium-term Scope 1 and 2 targets (2026–2035) aligned with a 1.5°C pathway. However, achieving climate goals requires expanding these targets to include Scope 3 emissions, which are 5.4 times higher for public companies and 6.5 times greater for private companies.

In response to these challenges, the industry has launched a suite of collective supply chain initiatives aimed at addressing Scope 3 emissions, which have shown significant progress over the past year. Programs such as Converge, Activate, and Energize are driving decarbonization by engaging suppliers to adopt renewable energy, improve operational efficiency, and pursue sustainable lab practices. The study found that leading companies are accelerating their sustainability commitments, with 36 companies—representing 56% of the sector’s revenue—joining the UN’s Race to Zero campaign, up from 28 companies (46% by revenue) in the previous year.

My Green Lab Certification drives Scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions by improving lab sustainability and supports Scope 3 reductions by encouraging sustainable purchasing and supply chain practices. It was chosen as a Race to Zero Breakthrough Outcome to help pharma and biotech companies reach a zero-carbon future by 2050.

Who comes to mind when you imagine a confident entrepreneur? A Silicon Valley tech bro or navy-suited executive in a Western business hub, most likely. But zoom out to the Global Majority and you’ll see something incredibly powerful and systemically ignored: women entrepreneurs leading sustainable businesses with exceeding vision and drive.

There’s a credit gap, not a confidence gap, limiting women entrepreneurs.

Women represent only one in four high-growth entrepreneurs globally. Yet, they are not holding themselves back. Instead, they are systematically disadvantaged by social and institutional barriers, leaving one in three unable to access the critical financial resources needed for business growth.

New research conducted through the Strive Women program, implemented by CARE and supported by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, reveals that 96% of the 2,000 women entrepreneurs spoken to (in countries as different as Pakistan, Peru and Vietnam) report high confidence in their ability to lead and grow their businesses, and 87% have the specific goal to do so.

Duke Energy is road testing an electric semitruck in North Carolina – a first-of-its-kind pilot project at the company that is reducing air pollution from transportation, the largest domestic contributor of greenhouse gases.

By replacing a traditional semitruck with a zero-emissions vehicle, Duke Energy found it can electrify a supply chain logistics route, efficiently moving materials to its operations centers without burning gasoline or diesel.

Launched in 2024, the pilot focused on electrifying one of the commercial vehicles that transport $1.5 billion worth of cargo annually, essential equipment and supplies that enable the company to maintain a resilient, reliable electric grid for 8.4 million customers across six states.

Duke Energy’s Supply Chain Management team worked with contractor AAA Cooper to procure an EV semitruck for distribution routes covering about 500 miles weekly for the Garner Distribution Center, which serves several sites in the Raleigh, N.C., area.

“We move materials to the right place, at the right time, and in the right quantity,” said Logistics Manager Brad Withers. “Think of our role as the link between each node, transporting materials so that our teams can maintain, repair and build new infrastructure efficiently.”

Meighan Read, manager of products and services at Duke Energy, said the team identified routes within the vehicle’s 250-mile range (on a full charge) to ensure equipment and supplies were delivered on time.

“EVs can be a challenge,” Read said, “but with the right application – whether it’s an electric vehicle or another alternative fuel – they can meet operational needs. That’s one of the biggest learnings from this pilot project: Electric can work in the right application.”

Also promising, Withers said, is the speed at which the zero-emissions truck could be charged and redeployed to continue delivering materials.

“We’ve learned that an EV semitruck can haul and perform like a diesel truck. If necessary, the vehicle can come back, get a healthy charge in about two hours, and deliver the remaining materials to be on time to those locations.”

This flexibility is vital as Duke Energy invests in major electric grid upgrades and cleaner energy sources, including expanded storage, renewables, natural gas and nuclear.

“I’m incredibly proud of my team for advocating for new ideas like this,” said Dwight Jacobs, senior vice president, supply chain, real estate and chief procurement officer. “We’re not just leading one of the largest clean energy transitions in North America – we’re literally driving it forward.”

Between January and mid-August, the pilot project’s EV tractor drove 14,000 miles, saving nearly 1,947 gallons of diesel fuel and approximately $7,500 in fuel costs, based on the current rate of $3.85 gallon for an equivalent diesel engine. This equates to a reduction of 19.6 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to 4.7 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year.

Electric vehicles also require less maintenance than conventional vehicles. Without a diesel engine, an EV tractor doesn’t need oil changes or as many mechanical repairs.

As the company works toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, Duke Energy is exploring other ways to cut carbon, some of which have already been implemented – like the Electric Power Take Off (ePTO) systems for material handling bucket trucks. The ePTO system uses a traditional chassis but operates the truck’s boom and auxiliary functions entirely off a battery once on-site, saving fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“It also has safety benefits by making job sites quieter,” Read added. “People in the bucket can talk to folks on the ground and hear them more clearly.”

It’s one more example, she said, of finding the right technology to match the application.

These pilot projects, including the one that electrified Duke Energy’s first supply chain route, continue to provide valuable data. “These projects demonstrate our commitment to cleaner energy,” Withers said. “Electrification is new for larger commercial vehicles at the company, but it’s a step we’re evaluating as part of our long-term strategy.”

We’re working to increase access to EV charging, research how it affects the grid and help electrify fleets

Over the next 26 years, energy consumption is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of nearly 2% – approximately 35% of that growth is expected to come from greater EV adoption. That means energy use could be about 50% greater by 2050 than it is today.

Duke Energy has been preparing for this transition – monitoring and implementing EV load management, and managing charging programs and pilots to help customers save money while lessening the impacts of EVs to system peaks.
